A more faithful and loyal servant the Stewart monarchy could never have imagined and in their stupidity, they wouldn't listen to wouldn't listen to their best general. For that Charles I was sold to the Covenanters who would execute him. The Stewarts weren't willing to find a way to fund Montrose and so he is finally driven from Scotland to try and get some funding from Queen Henrietta Marie, Charles I's, but she's too busy keeping up appearances in her court-in-exile and being fawned on by her courtiers. They want him to fight for their cause without the finances to pay for shipping, supplies, or men's wages. In the end he loses a battle in Scotland, is captured, and is carted on several half-dead nags to bring him to Edinburgh for his execution. It takes a while, but his various body parts will be gathered together, and he'll be given a military funeral with honors while his enemy Archibald Campbell is held in Tolbooth dungeon awaiting execution. Charles II deal with the Covenanters was a bad one and after being humiliated and harassed by them he wound up being packed back to the Continent after Cromwell invades Scotland. It will be 9 years before Charles Ii can claim his throne and he will never return to Scotland
