Forever Freedom #2
Their Daring Hearts (Volume 2)
Levi Albright rebelled against his Quaker roots to fight for abolition in the Union army in the first year of the Civil War. Two years later, 19-year-old destitute orphan Josephine Winters, with chopped hair, boy’s clothes, and new name, “Snipp,” enlists in the Union army out of sheer desperation.
Just over five feet tall and barely weighing as much as a newborn calf, Snipp seems to Levi to be barely old enough to hold "his" gun. But despite being teased by the regiment, Snipp quickly earns admiration for skill with a musket and unequaled bravery. When Levi explains one night that he is a Quaker leading a regiment, it leads to a late-night discussion of faith and a developing friendship.
But Snipp’s secret can only be hidden for so long. After an injury forces Josie to reveal her real identity, Levi is angered by her deception. Worse, Josie is marched out of the company without a chance to explain—or even say goodbye. Will their friendship survive? Or will the hatred saturating the war-torn nation affect even the heart of a peace-loving Quaker? //
"Finely detailed secondary characters add realistic depth to the story, making the world where the Albrights live feel dangerous and alive. Fans of MacLaren will be delighted with this first book in the Forever Freedom series." — Publishers Weekly review of Summer on Sunset Ridge

I really enjoyed this book, y’all. For several reasons.
First, it’s set during the Civil War (one of my favorite time periods to read about because of such great courage shown by people fighting for the freedom of others), but it’s also about two unlikely soldiers. A Quaker and a woman, both passionate enough about the cause to risk everything to fight for the Union Army. Levi is going against his religion and his family, though his family loves him anyway & respects his choice. But I can imagine it was not at all an easy decision for him to make. Josie (aka Gordon Snipp) is going against the law, against society, and against her own body to fight now that her brother cannot. I cannot fathom what it would be like a) to disguise your true gender in those conditions and b) to face the horrors of war so young. I have long admired the accounts of women who disguised themselves as boys and fought in the Civil War – what great courage! Oh that I could be as strong today as they were then.
Second, there’s a deliciously-written suspense thread woven throughout the story. MacLaren does a great job of keeping the reader suspicious of several suspects without giving too much away. And the revelation of the traitor’s identity may surprise you! The bitterness and growing madness of the spy among them is palpable as the author writes occasionally from his perspective, creating little vignettes inside his mind that heighten the book’s tension even further.
I also really enjoyed the bits of humor and faith that kept the story from being too heavy. The gruesomeness of war, the illnesses that sweep through the camp, the emotions driving both Levi and Josie… it hits you heavy in the heart. But peppered throughout, at just the right moments, are cute scenes of soldier camaraderie and groan-worthy jokes told around a fire. Not only does it put a smile on your face, but it also nicely alleviates that heaviness. Likewise, the gentle spiritual conversations that Levi has with dying and/or wounded soldiers – as well as ‘Gordon’ – wrap around your heart like a warm hug. The gospel – the fact that none of us is good enough but Jesus stands in our place, loves us, and has a plan for us – is clearly presented more than once but avoids feeling as though the story has stopped for a sermon.
But my favorite part of the novel is (you guessed it) the romance. The fact that Levi and Josie begin as friends (because of course Levi only knows her as ‘Gordon Snipp’), and that their friendship deepens throughout the course of the novel, makes the tentative progression into romance (once Levi discovers Josie’s true identity) sweet and tender. And that first kiss is … whew. It’s well worth the wait!
Bottom Line: Their Daring Hearts by Sharlene MacLaren is intriguing, well-written and layered. The characters come alive on the pages, marching right into your heart and setting up camp. This is not just a story of the Civil War. It’s also not just a story of a Quaker deciding to fight for freedom or of a young woman deciding to join the Union Army in a boy’s disguise. It’s a story of friendship, forgiveness and courage – all three in the face of the worst conditions. This is truly an inspiring and educational read as well as being entertaining!

Sweet Civil War romance novel.

I do not read too many books where the girl disguises herself as a man. It is not really a favorite storyline of mine but this was an interesting one as it takes place during the Civil War, and Josie disguises herself as a man to become a Union soldier. Her reasons for doing so seemed a bit weak for me and her cousin gives her some pretty good alternatives, but whether it was her pride or youth, 19 year old Josie goes off to war. She is a pretty good soldier and fools her fellow comrades including Levi Albright. Levi is also a conundrum as he is a Quaker but has decided to go to war to keep the Union together. I was pleasantly surprised at how both of these characters were very out of the box with their way of thinking and tried to rely on God and do right.
Besides the tension of the war, knowing a battle was coming soon, and knowing that Josie was a woman and the anticipation of danger to her was great, there is also a spy among them. One who is ruthless and going a bit mad. Besides Levi’s and Josie’s point of views, we are also given the spy’s and were privy to his hit list of the Union soldiers he planned on taking out. I thought the author did a good job of keeping his identity hidden and wondering when this mad man would strike next. We were introduced to several soldiers that had me trying to guess who it was. I did not guess correctly.
The first half of this book was like a waiting game; the second half picks up the dangers of the war, the spy’s nefarious plans, and ultimately the romance. This was a pretty good read at keeping me on my toes so to speak.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

An interesting twist on Civil War Historicals, neither the hero nor the heroine in Their Daring Hearts are the typical soldiers. Levi is Quaker and Josie (aka Gordon Snipp) is a woman.
I couldn’t help but love Josie. She’s a tough little cookie. Despite the teasing, the harsh conditions, and her secret, she gives the Union army a hundred percent. And the fact that Levi notices and appreciates that about young Snipp (in addition to his strong convictions and faith) makes him just as likable.
Add in the extra tension of a possible traitor among Company B, and Sharlene MacLaren delivers a well-paced, engaging story.
Since this is the first of MacLaren’s books for me (not the last, though), I enjoyed getting to know Levi’s family through his conversations with Snipp and later when he visits them.

This well written and action packed story kept the pages turning as I read. Levi Albright and Gordon Snipp, aka Josephine Winters, had their reasons for fighting in the Union Army. I was thoroughly immersed into the Civil War battles, the soldiers’ conversations, hardships and disgruntled feelings with all they endured. Levi had a watchful eye on young Snipp and seemed to always be there when someone was trying to cause harm against him. Levi’s appointment to Chaplain of Company B of the 23rd Pennsylvania Regiment gave him an opportunity to minister to the injured and Snipp volunteered to assist in the makeshift hospital. Levi and Snipp’s friendship grew with deeper conversations about Levi’s heritage and Levi learning Snipp’s true identity. Josie observed Levi in action and asked if he considered being a minister in a different church, since the Quakers didn’t have ministers. The unforeseen action with Snipp being injured and his deception made known to others resulted in pain and a sense of loss for Levi. What will happen when she is suddenly let go without being able to explain to Levi? Will Josephine find a place to use her nursing skills when she returned to civilization and away from the battlefield? How will Levi find Josie when she left no forwarding address? Historical fiction readers will enjoy this heartwarming historical romance story.
Sharlene Maclaren never fails in drawing her readers into the middle of the action, characters that become family and a message of God’s faithfulness, love, grace and mercy. Her research shines through with the vivid description of scenes that is a part of our American history. Their Daring Hearts can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the first book, Summer on Sunset Ridge. I would like to see other books in her Forever Freedom Series in the future.

Their Daring Hearts by Sharlene MacLaren is a delightful Christian historical romance. It is the second book in the Forever Freedom series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Set at the height of the American Civil War, the reader sees the futility of war. "Both sides of this ugly war think they're right." There are no winners in war. Both sides have mothers losing sons. Children losing fathers. Civil war seems even more futile. Fighting over the issue of freedom, both sides are locked into war.
Spies appear in war. The novel explores this topic, as well as the issue of appearances and trying to live as someone else.
The novel is about duty. The call to do the right thing.
God is at the centre. We need to know where we will spend eternity, especially in times of war. "I ain't good enough." None of us will ever be 'good enough' for God but we don't have to be. God gives us all the free gift of grace.
Sometimes we are called to stand on the side of God but against our earthly parents. It is important to listen to and heed His call.
The novel is a wonderful read. I loved the two main characters with their camaraderie and their love for God. They encouraged each other in life and complemented each other.
There were many great lessons to be learnt in the novel. I want to leave you with my favourite quote:
"God's not looking for perfect people. He's looking for willing ones."
A perfectly wonderful read.

Absolutely a wonderful read!!!
Josephine Winters is definitely someone I admired and loved because of her bravery and I loved her dedication to finish what she started except in a different way of course!!!
I also liked how she stood up for herself and others in the story.
If there's one thing in the book that I didn't like it was the bullying and the surliness that went on. I also didn't like all of the complaining that went on. Life's too short for that.
Sometimes tho I know we can't help it because if unhappy situations but it's where we can learn to make the best of it. Especially if you're stuck in the middle of a war.
Levi Albright is a very interesting character. I had no trouble imagining in what he looked like. Very special and quite stubborn at times.
I liked how he got along with everyone and how God found a use for him. I also liked how if he wants something or needs to do it, he does it without complaining.
If I lived back then I'd probably be at home sewing socks, or whatever else the soldiers needed at the time. There's no way I could work in a hospital like that and not get queasy.
I can imagine myself in the other scenes of the book and I must say I enjoyed being there.
I love my imagination taking over!
Sharlene you are an excellent writer and I love your stories! I wish I could meet you face to face. Please keep them coming. It's so easy to get lost in your books!!

What a beautifully penned story full of surprises, mystery, and bravery! It reminded me of the movie Mulan - brave young woman cuts her hair and sneaks off to join the military to help her family (and in this case, herself). Not only a brave heroine, but a heroine with a strong faith. Never once did Josie think God was not right there with her, even on the battlefield. She had to endure so much in her time on the battle scene, and to be honest I kind of admired her for it.
Then you add a Quaker to the mix in Levi. Wow. I never thought I'd see a Quaker character in battle, especially in his position! It was quite a surprise, but honestly I thought it was fun too. I loved every moment that him and Josie "Gordon" were together. Under the circumstances, you know that nothing can become of it (unless her secret gets out of course), so you can just sit back, read, and enjoy them getting to know each other. It was truly a beautiful relationship right from the start.
As if this wasn't enough, we get a mystery to solve. Who is this mysterious solider who may be working for the other side? I loved the way these little scenes were written. It was always a "he" and with limited character contact, so you really had no clue as to who it was until the ultimate surprise! I thought I knew who it was throughout most of the story, but I was completely wrong. Quite frankly, I was glad to be. I like a good twist!

When you look back at the past, you can see just how much has changed. Especially during the Civil War, women were not allowed to enlist to serve in the war, they had to stay home and do what they needed to do. But this didn't stop a orphaned 19 year old Josephine Winters. Her hair was chopped off, she wore boy's clothes, and they called her "Snipp." She enlists in the Union Army. Levi Albright was a Quaker who rebelled and enlisted to fight in the Union Army. Levi doesn't believe Snipp is old enough to hold his gun but quickly earns admiration for "his" skill with the musket.
Levi and Snipp become friends and Levi tells Snipp his story but Snipp can't reveal hers. It's not until Snipp is hurt during battle does her secret come out and leaves Levi angry.
This story isn't much different then what still happens today. There are plenty of times that people pretend to be someone they are not and when the truth comes out everyone around them gets hurt. We live in a world of second chances and forgiveness. Let them explain and give them a chance. Their Daring Hearts is a wonderful story, one that you will love. This is the first book in the Forever Freedom Series and is definitely going to be a best selling series. One you will want to add to your bookshelf.

Their Daring Hearts is book two from the Forever Freedom series. I loved book one so much that I preordered this one six months before it was released. I am so glad I did! I was thrilled with every single page. Sharlene MacLaren surely knows how to craft a great story- this one included . I admired Josie and her strength to go outside her comfort zone to help her family. Levi was another character I enjoyed and I admired his faith.
Their Daring Hearts is most definitely a must read and I highly recommend it. I cannot wait until book three goes up for preorder, too.
5 plus stars.
I purchased this copy for my personal collection. Therefore, was not obligated to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Tender, sweet and wonderful. From the beginning when the main character disguised herself to join the civil war to the precious ending I enjoyed this read. Shar is great with historical details, I even fact checked a few. Historical fiction is this authors sweet spot!

I enjoyed book one in the “Forever Freedom” series, Summer on Sunset Ridge, so I’m not surprised that Their Daring Hearts is just as good. The only thing I took exception to was that Josie is described as slight of stature with fine, feminine features, yet a unit full of men can’t figure out that she is a woman, or those who think she is a fourteen year old boy rather than the nineteen year old she claims to be, don’t turn her in to the authorities. Was the Union that desperate for soldiers? Having said that, the story is well-written, and obviously well-researched. References to battle dates and locations are accurate, and the fighting scenes are realistic without being gruesome. I enjoyed the way Josie’s and Levi’s friendship develops, and despite clues along the way, I didn’t figure out the identity of the traitor. There are a lot of men in the unit to keep track of, but the author gives each of them unique characteristics which make them memorable in their own way. I liked learning about the Quaker beliefs and Levi’s struggle with them is realistic. Highly recommended.

It's been some time since I read a Sharlene MacLaren novel, so when I saw the chance to review this, I jumped on it. I wasn't disappointed! I fell in love with Levi and his Quaker family and "Gordon Snipp" was a fun character to get to know!
I loved the historical detail to the Civil War era. Ms. MacLaren chiseled the scenes well, and I felt like I was transported to the heart of the story, the center of the war. All the feelings that Josie, Gordon Snipp, felt, I felt. I loved the way Josie fought for what she felt was right.
Levi's sweet character....oh was he swoon worthy as the Chaplain of his company. I love the way his friendship with "Snipp" blossomed, and later, his love for a beautiful young woman. It was so fun watching them together.
This story of hope, longing, deception and forgiveness is beautifully created. It's 4 star worthy, and I will definitely recommend it to all! Ms. MacLaren brought to life the action of the war, the romance of two God-fearing characters and messages from God of understanding and trust. This is definitely a keeper on my shelf!

Josephine Winters felt driven to enlist in the Union Army. But there is a problem: she is a girl. This doesn't stop her!
Levi is a Quaker. But he had a calling to enlist in the Army.
Both felt that GOD was calling them to do more in their lives. Because of this they met under grueling circumstances...but Levi met Josephine as Gordon Snipp.
Their relationship developed from friendship and their faith in GOD.
I loved this story. It was a quick page turner. I love historical books and this did not disappoint.
This is a book of fiction based on history. There were women who served in the Civil War disguised as men. It is hard to imagine but they were driven to serve, an example of this is Sarah Edmonds aka Frank Thompson.

I’m really struggling with writing this review. I sorta let myself get swept up in the story instead of actually also paying attention to the things that make the story. I will say that reading an ARC(Advanced Reader Copy) comes with it own set of interesting quirks. Finding wrong words (though instead of thought – which personal experience I know will NEVER be caught by spell check), awkward wording where the same word (or even phrasing) is used very closely together that makes you feel like you are reading the same sentence again. I didn’t realize, when I started this book, that it was a second in a series. That does not in any way detract from this book at all. I could have sworn I had checked into that when I realized it was a series and convinced myself that it was the first. I was wrong, I didn’t realize until I finished the book. I have to wonder if I actually looked into it or just thought so hard on it I convinced myself I did. Had I realized I would have tried to get my hands on book on because well…series.
There were a few little things I thought as I read this book that made me wonder if other people ever think these things. As a 19 year old woman Josie (Gordan) joins the army, pretending to be a man. I mean there’s this little monthly thing that pops up and I had to wonder how the gravy she hid that. It was mentioned, briefly, once, but it didn’t cure my curiosity in the least and actually brought about more questions. Tell me I’m not the only person who things about these things?!? The other little tidbit that came up for me was when her true identity was discovered and the feelings of those that knew, particularly Levi. Here’s this ‘guy’ you’ve become friends with who is suddenly a woman. Not long later you are kissing ‘her’ in the hospital tent. I mean I think that would totally give me the heebee jeebees. And what were you thinking kissing the person everyone else still knows as a boy and how that would go if you were seen? I think it would take me a lot longer than a couple of weeks to come to terms with something like that.
That being said this book wasn’t just a light breezy Civil War love story. There was war, that while not overt and in your face, was so well written that I could sense myself on the battleground. There was comradarie of group brought together by a common cause. And finding their place in smaller groups through their faith in God. There was a little mystery that ran partway through the story that legitimately kept me guessing right up to the reveal. This book had all the good things that make a great book hard to review. Things you don’t want to spoiler away, action that brings you into the environment, characters you care about, some intrigue along the way, and a story of love. Love for others, love for cause, love for God, and romantic love for another person.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by CelebrateLit. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

I really enjoyed the concept of the story. Josephine was a wonderful character and I admired her determination. The author depicts the Civil War with vivid accounts of what soldiers went through. I never thought about how little food they had to live on as they fought a battle that would cost lives. Josephine or Snipps as she is called in most of the story is a person to be reckoned with. She doesn’t back down from whatever chore or duty is given to her. I wondered how long she would be able to keep her secret. As the story progresses, Snipps soon discovers that someone doesn’t like her in the unit. Why would someone want to harm her?
Levi was very passionate about God and keeping his troops safe. I liked that he shared God in a subtle way without being preachy. It was interesting to see a friendship develop between him and Snipps. I loved Levi’s leadership and how he took Snipps under his wing . I dont think I would have lasted very long out there with the sound of gunfire and sometimes weather that was unbearable.
The men seemed to get along pretty well with Snipps even thought many questioned why he didn’t have facial hair or whether Snipps was really old enough to be there. I had to wonder why someone didn’t figure out who Snipps really was. One of the best parts of the story for me is when a spy is discovered in the midst of everyone. How would you react if you knew someone among you couldn’t be trusted? I know I would be looking over my shoulder constantly. I didn’t figure out who it was and I was surprised when the person was revealed. Overall the book is a great story with details of the war that were accurate and made you feel transported back in time. Will Josephine be found out? How will Levi react when secrets are revealed ? This is a good story with a bit of action and mystery that kept me entertained. I look forward to the next book in the series.

"Their Daring Hearts" by Sharlene Maclaren is book two in the "Forever Freedom" series. It is a story of courage and how the characters stood up and did what they believed in even though it was dangerous. When Josie joins the army as a male, she doesn't realizes that she is going to have to over come more than hiding her real identify because she becomes a target for someone with a personal resentment against the army.
I am glad the author portrayed the hardships the soldiers endured pretty accurately without a lot of graphic details. I think this series would make a good family movie. I was really surprised that the men accepted Josie, aka Snipp, as well as they did, maybe I am more surprised that Josie could act out her role as a male as well as she did. There were a few that was questioning that she had no facial hair. I am glad that Levi showed others God's love without being preachy about it because I believe the way to show God's love to others is to live it and not preach it.This book is about war and love and betrayal and acceptance and change.
I recommend this series to anyone that wants a realistic account of war without gory details, yes there is violence but nothing gory. I also recommend it to anyone that wants a clean love story and a story about how two people helped the suffering during war time. I know this is a work of fiction but it could have happen like the author wrote it. This book is also has a mystery, is there a spy in the company and if so who and why?
Ok. guess I better stop reviewing before I give away spoiler alerts! I will just say " if you read this book" I think you will be like me and say I want to read more about Josie and Levi and Company B. I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These options are my own.

Their Daring Hearts by Sharlene MacLaren was such a perfect book for me to read. I have a real interest in the Amish Faith and lifestyle, I have since teenagehood, and the Quaker elements to the story are just as interesting of not more is since I know less about the group. It’s also such a fun spin on historical fiction. I like to have a couple books going on at once but always select a non fiction and a fiction and prefer that within those categories if I have multiple books going on that they are different genres. I almost always have a historical fiction book in my stack. I’ve found it peaks my interest in history as well, this novel was no exception. I found myself googling and looking into the accuracy of the facts and was pleasantly surprised by MacLaren’s attention to detail in this area.
I appreciated the story’s secrets and the author’s ability to keep some things from even us, the readers, including the traitors’ identity. While I like a good “easy read fiction book” I don’t love a totally predictable story and this was not that.
The characters, although there are quite a few to keep track of, were memorable enough in their own rights and diverse in personalities.
I will add that this is book two in the “Forever Freedom Series” and I would recommend picking up Summer on Sunset Ridge first. While I do read books from a series out of order sometimes I typically like to read them all and in order and that would be my recommendation with his historically rich series.

This was a very entertaining novel! I was drawn right in when I learned that the female heroine was going to disguise herself as a boy/man and join the Union Army during the Civil War. At nineteen years old she cut her long hair, put on baggy men's clothing and practiced talking with a deeper voice. The men in the regiment she was assigned to had a hard time believing Gordon Snipp was nineteen since "he" had no sign of whiskers, not even fuzz. But Josephine was determined to live out the lie to finish what her younger brother started when he was killed in the war.
The interactions between the characters were quite amusing at times. And there is always a protagonist in the group. Not to mention a suspected spy helping the confederate soldiers but disguised in a Union uniform. Josie, as she likes to be called, finds a friend in a solider named Levi. Of course he thinks she's a he named Gordon Snipp. She slowly finds her calling as a medical assistant helping wounded soldiers beside the doctors.
The author did a great job describing the conditions in this war period. Go along with Josie/Gordon as she learns the ways of the army in the harshest of conditions. I found myself reading into the night to try and find out what would happen next and would she be found out and if so, how.
There was a Christian element as well and a smattering of romance. A great read! I give it a five star!

"Only God could write so perfect a love story."
And this book indeed is a beautiful love story. It is the first book written by Sharlene MacLaren that I have read and I'm hooked. This book blends good writing, a well-plotted story that is perfectly paced, a hint of intrigue and mystery, memorable characters, great dialogue, historical facts from Civil War with a strong element of faith, salvation, redemption and grace to produce a delightful read.
The solid faith Levi and Josie portray throughout the story is commendable and inspiring. Their compassion and care for those wounded, both physically and spiritually, bring them together in ways that neither have experienced before. Levi is strong, faithful, loyal, compassionate, full of God's Word and love, thoughtful, loving, a natural leader and makes for a dashing hero. Josie is determined yet tender-hearted, loyal to family and friends, creative, compassionate yet so innocent about the ways of the world and romance. They go through a lot together during their days in the army and a wonderful friendship emerges even before the romance. A hint of intrigue and mystery regarding a traitor in their midst adds a layer of adrenaline to the plot.
Anyone who enjoys a well-written historical romance taking place during the Civil War will appreciate this book.
I was given a copy of this book by the author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Sharlene MacLaren is the reason I read historical fiction. A few years ago, I accidentally put a book of hers on hold at our local library, not realizing it was historical fiction. She taught me that it's okay to venture outside of our comfort zone when it comes to reading new books. Now, I have several historical fiction authors I absolutely love, but I will never forget the initial reseaon I gave this genre a chance.
Their Daring Hearts won't disappoint. The romance was a little slower to build than most of her books, but what can you expect when the hero thinks the heroine is a man? Josie's reasons for joining the military were noble (and flawed), which made you love the character from the moment she stepped onto the page. There's action, romance, and history in a combination that will whet your appetite for a few more of her books.
She got my mind spinning with the what-if's of pretending to be the opposite gender. She added little details that I've never thought about. I give this book a 5+ star rating.

“Their Daring Hearts” is a creative story about a woman during the Civil War. I gravitate to novels of women and their decisions to support the war effort. I was immediately pulled into this one. Josephine Winters, aka Gordon Snipp chooses to join the war as a soldier in honor of her brother. The story speaks to the negative impact of our choices when we don’t consult with others more knowledgeable than we are. Her choices created dilemmas that necessitated more decisions, some foolish, some good.
Levi Albright also had his reasons for fighting in the Union Army—his secrets and his inner turmoil.
This well-researched, well-written story is packed with action. A spy in the midst kept me guessing and reading to follow the next hint. It’s a story of secrets, repentance, joy and the good things that can come out of our mistakes.
Thank you, Sharlene MacLaren and Whitaker House for providing me a review copy of “Their Daring Hearts”. I was not required to write a positive review, I receive no compensation, and it was my choice to write this review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

I have read many of Sharlene MacLaren's books & enjoyed them so when I had a chance to read her latest title, I had to read it. This book is set in the Civil War, when Josephine Winters feels she wants to take up the cause for her Brother who was killed in battle. She has been living with her Aunt & feels she is a burden to her due to the size of her family. She joins the war disguised as a boy. She is with Company B. She is able to conceal her true identity even through illness. Once she is shot in battle, her secret is out. She leaves Company B, goes back home only to go to Alexandra VA to volunteer at Mansion House Hospital. When she left her regiment, she left behind, the man she fell in love with while serving with Company B. He searches for her & finally is able to find her at the Hospital she is working at. The first night he arrives, he sees her in the arms of another man so he leaves town. With the help of his Father, he goes back, only to find she loves him, not the man he saw her kissing. They return to his family farm to start their lives together.

I was really impressed with this book. Set in the midst of the Civil War, it took regular people-people who were dedicated to God, their families, and their country-and made them very real.
Author Sharlene MacLaren penned a very well-researched novel. Although I didn't fact check, I know that places and battles that were mentioned were actual, because those places are near where I live. The way the supporting characters were listed so carefully, I wondered if they were actual people.
The action of the battles, combined with the interaction between characters, with some mystery thrown in, kept me turning the pages and thoroughly enjoying this book. Civil War history fans will certainly appreciate this book as well.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Whitaker House, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Their Daring Hearts
This was one of those books that I did not want to end but I devoured it. I could not stop reading it. I was so involved with the characters of Levi and Josie. This is the 2nd in the series, the first one was really good and this one is too. Josie disguises herself as a boy to serve in the army, she get away with it for several months. This was set during the civil war, a lot different from our time, the new guys were trained with ones that had been there awhile. Put into battle when not ready but of course that is something no one is ever ready for. Josie was so special, so caring and hard working. Levi and the other guys kept thinking something was different about Gordon A.K.A Josie. I kept wandering when they would figure it out. Also I believe this series is one that could be read more then once. I definitely recommend this book. I received an advanced copy of the book from the publisher.

Here is a unique Civil War story sure to stir the heart and give the reader a chance to consider some of the unique ways women chose to serve their country during this era. The follow-up discussion questions provide an excellent opportunity to reflect upon and consider all elements of the story – an excellent inclusion and one I encourage all readers to take the time to answer.
Their Daring Hearts has prompted me to begin a study of the women who served incognito as soldiers for both sides of the conflict. Fascinating and eye-opening for sure. The notion of a Quaker forsaking his pacifist beliefs for a greater cause (abolition of slavery) is thought-provoking. This MacLaren novel is a worthy and enjoyable read!

My Review
Their Daring Hearts is a historical fiction story that is set in the Civil War time. This is a second book in a series. I have never read the first one so that may have made my reading of this one more enjoyable if I had. Now usually I am not fond of stories that fall into the historical fiction category but this one wasn't bad at all. When Josephine's younger brother dies in the war then she finds a way herself to serve in the army and that involves some deceit. How she pulled off what she did for so long is beyond my imagination . Levi , another main character you will read about, went against his Quaker raising to serve in the army. You will find this story does have some romance and a little suspense thrown in with a traitor being around. Good read. I was so happy to read this book. I was on a string of reading books that hadn’t captured me but this book broke that.
I was pulled in immediately to the characters and their stories. It was such an interesting premise with Josie being a boy and the reader knowing her attraction to Levi. But she had to play it off. I also wondered how Levi didn’t pick up on any of that, or think she was weird.
I couldn’t wait to get to the part where Josie’s real identity would be revealed and how that would all play at.
Overall, a very good book that I enjoyed.
A copy of this book was given to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.

I really wanted to love this book as I did all prior books by this author. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. For me, it was too long, too sad, too much war. The last fourth of the book, including the epilogue, was fabulous! If this had been a novella sans 100 plus pages it would have been a great book. It was like reading two separate books - the long sad to much detail war portion and the happy romance portion. I got to the point of skimming the middle section. I don’t read to be sad. I read to be happy.

"Their Daring Hearts" is the second book in the Forever Freedom series. This book tells the story of Levi Albright, the brother to the heroine of the first book. Since I got an uncorrected copy of this book from Netgalley, it had formatting issues that are common with books from there. While it was a little distracting to have random hyphenations and page number/author name footers in the middle of the text, I know that these aren't going to be problems with the final book. The book is told from the perspective of Levi, Josie, and the unnamed spy/traitor. I kept having various theories of who the spy was, but they proved incorrect and I was in the dark until the very moment that it was revealed. I thought the faith element was woven through the story well.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received.
