Flynn Golding has lost all of the people close to him. His mum, his dad, and now Vicky. However, he doesn’t yet know Vicky’s dead, so he doesn’t know who killed her. Convinced that Vicky chose to leave, he’ll find out the truth sooner or later. When he does, he’ll have to accept his community is run by her murderers. The community that offers him safety, security, and three square meals a day. Either that, or he’ll have to make them pay, therefore giving up his safe existence and re-entering a hostile world.

“Just in case you don’t feel like climbing, know we have ways to motivate you. Prisoners, get ready …
Another fantastic entry to the series and my favourite so far. Brilliant to see an older Flynn and a much different world to what we know from the rest.
"Sell people the illusion of security and they’d hand over their freedom."
This entry takes a drastic turn down the root of humanity and its evil which I absolutely loved to read.
This action packed British urban fantasy follows a tight cast of characters through a rage-style zombie apocalypse. Organized into trilogies, the opening trilogy details the hourly spread of the apocalyptic pandemic from the POV of a father just trying to save his 6 y.o. son, Flynn. The second trilogy jumped ten years to show the dystopian micro-communities that existed in the ravaged landscape. Each micro-community was largely isolationist since infected zombies ruled the world.
This installment repeats the trick of the fourth book by fast forwarding yet another ten years--again to shocking effect. Here, the zombies died out 8 years prior. So everything's good, right?
And, no. Dystopian and sadistic micro-communities still dominate the countryside, but now unchecked by the undead. With dwindling resources, communities enslave or outright kill each other. Others turn to cannibalism.
Flynn, now 26 and after accepting the sanctuary of Home for a decade, strikes out on his own to find a better community. Home isn't what it once was. The electricity and running water failed during the intervening years. However, what Flynn finds with another community is so much worse. Captured and imprisoned, he needs to outwit and outsurvive 19 other prospects for a single spot in their community. Failure=death. [Think: Hunger Games]
The nice sub-theme of this installment is trust. Flynn didn't trust Vicky during his teen years, and then she left. Then he didn't trust the new leaders of Home. Unless he wants to go it alone forever, he needs to learn to trust. But who to trust when it's every person for oneself . . . to the death.??
I've read all the books so far in the Alpha Plague Series and I've found them to be well written, with interesting characters and fast-paced storytelling. Definitely a good read although I found this particular book to be a bit gruesome. I guess I prefer my gore a little less gory.
I have the box set of this series and it's great to see all the twists and turns - book seven is different again, thus making each story individual, if linked to the rest.
The story continues with Flynn, though I did prefer following Vicky, and his trials take an alternate route. We are introduced to Rose; another interesting character.
Cruelty and insanity are the main themes this time, but there are also courage and determination.
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment to the series. It continues on from the previous book and continues developing the story of Flynn. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Sooo... I ended up reading this despite my previous review from book 6 because the curiosity got the best of me. It just didn't feel like I was reading the Alpha Plague. It was alright as it's own story but I didn't feel like it was part of the series.
Book 7 is brutal. The most brutal of them all so far. It is not for the faint of heart. Even so, I think I read this book in less time than the others. On to number 8.
I really like the series but I really despise the main character. He's more than plausible but combines the worst of teenaged self-righteousness with no acceptance of responsibility or gratitude. This is a mid-twenties male, not a child though he thinks like one. He seems a good model of what to avoid in oneself.
The characters are brutal and real with a lot of gory detail. The series background is composed of three sets of survivors. The first are the end of the world maniacs whose sole purpose is to pillage and destroy any pocket of normality they encounter. How they will survive when they are all that's left, is a great question. The second set are the devolved who have burnt out any concept of building, growing or rediscovery and routinely practice cannibalism. They roam the countryside without plan or purpose except to eat whatever or whomever they encounter if it's not too difficult. The third set are the timid who look the other way when they discover their insane neighbors practising slavery, murder, etc. imagining that they are superior and also won't be next, if they don't disturb the neighbors. They tell themselves that cowardice is civility and the horrors visited on others is not their responsibility.
With a story like this, the end seems to be the well deserved extinction of the human race. I hope we are better than this but maybe we're not. I am definitely reading the next volume, if only to discover where the series is headed.
Book 7 Starts ten years after Brian and Dan had tied Vicky’s hands and threw her out the front door. It took no time before the diseased found her, but her and turned her into one of them. Vicky had told Serjg to never tell Flynn what really happened. Now ten years later Flynn and Serjg had gone to the old town looking for lead to try to fix the chimney where it was leaking. All of the solar panels were destroyed so the had no electricity or ways to purify water. All of the diseased had died off but now there were gangs of both adults and kids. Flynn and Serjg climbed up to about the 7th floor of one of the old buildings. Serjg saw some lead on the chimney, but when he got to it he fell through the roof all the way to the bottom flood and had a rod stuck through his belly. He knew he couldn’t survive and wanted Flynn to put him out of his misery, but first he told Flynn what really happened to Vicky. By then a large group of the kids and rats were coming in, so Flynn did what Serjg wanted him to do. When he got back home he told him that Serjg had fallen 7 floors and died. Later that night he snuck into Brian’s room, tied him up and gagged him with one on Brian’s filthy socks. He couldn’t bring himself to kill him. He then packed some food, crossbow and arrows and a bat and headed out. He had walked fora few hours and then he was captured by another group. To find out what all happens in the rest of the book, which is a lot, you will have to read it
My summary statement only makes sense if you read the book. This installment has some particularly intense scenes and actually just as gruesome as any scenes with the infected. The worst come from the survivors. It was hard to read in spots because there was a build up to something that would be awful.
I am surprised at how durable this series is over so many installments. Usually I feel the underlying premise becomes strained, but this series evolves and doesn't grow stale.
Flynn! What happened to you!? You were always the smartest, even as a kid. I can't take it any more. I only have one more book left in the series but I'm pulling my hair out at the stupidity, so I'm stopping. I may or may not finish the book series. 1-1/2 stars.
Very good book. I went through this one faster than the last one Alpha 6. It kept me going from page to page. I thought the story line was very good and kept me interested throughout the story. Cant wait for the next one.
This series has been great. Flynn is a survivor. With loss of his step mother and parents to deal, and him finding his new love, I can't wait to read the last book in this series.
This follows Flynn, ten years after Vicki left. He has to survive outside of Home and on his own for the first time. There are plenty of moments where you need to hold your breath! Excellent book! Straight on to book 8 for me!
This was excellent as good as all the previous stories! Interesting ideas, shocks & surprises through the entire book! I loved all of it, everything you could want from an end of the world zombie adventure!
Another great book in the series. I have really enjoyed it. As good as the previous six books in the series and I am really looking forward to reading the next one.
