Arrowtown #1

A Tiger's Tale

A Tiger's Tale Arrowtown Series #1 (M/M, Shifters, true mate, MPREG, HEA) Seth Carmichael never did anything wrong, but instead of working at the local library, he was running for his life. His herd was hunting him and with few resources, Seth's options were fading fast. Until, that is, he heard the rumble of a motorcycle. Peeking through the tree he was hiding in, he couldn't believe his eyes. Had salvation come in the form of a badass biker? Ra (no last name and proud of it) was a tiger on a mission. He'd scented his mate and then the little rabbit ran away before his teeth could engage. Ra heard the gossip around Arrowtown; he knew his mate was a hunted man. But if the sweet man was on the run, he needed someone to look after him; Ra figured he was the right man for the job. A meeting, a mating and yet another meeting. What should have been a straight forward relationship turned into so much more on their very first outing as a mated couple. Now Ra has to count on the strength of his mate and the help of his friends, if he and Seth are ever to have the HEA they'd planned for. And what was with all these Fae turning up out of the blue? Contains a tiger who keeps putting his foot in it; a tiny lop-eared rabbit who is stronger than he looks and a bunch of friends who’ll hide a body, no questions asked.

TIGER + BUNNY + MPREG = JL MUST READ

Now this is my type of brain candy! A classic tale of predator meets prey but, instead of eating him, falls in love. *sigh* It just speaks to my romantically perverted heart. This has almost everything you need for a successful shifter-fluff-with-mpreg story. There’s the overprotective Alpha male and his diminutive mate. There’s claiming and growling and biting and insta-love and hot sex and antics and shenanigans and secrets all mixed into an over-the-top storyline. There’s lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Sadly, there was no KNOTTING. Coulda done with some KNOTTING. I was able to look past that oversight because, dude! There’s a bunny shifter in this book! An adorable, itty bitty white lop-eared bunny! And he mates with a tiger! A big, strong, growly tiger! There was no way I was passing this one up.

At the start of the story, Seth, the aforementioned adorable itty bitty white lop-eared bunny, has been on the run from his herd for two weeks for reasons unknown. His mate, a tiger shifter named Ra, finally catches up to him and lures him out of hiding with his magical peen and a picnic basket full of salad. They’ve both known they were mates for a few months now but Seth, in true bunny fashion, fled with a startled “eep!” when they first ran into each other. He was scared, y’all! Ra came on a bit too strong and he’s just an itty bitty thing, he couldn’t help but run away and hide. But what bunny could resist a salad? Not to mention tiger peen. *waggles eyebrows*

So, Seth moves in with Ra and his biker gang/motorcycle club/whatever. The alpha of his herd is not happy about this turn of events at all. Cue the shenanigans.

This story was so ridiculous and over-the-top I couldn’t help but love it. It had the standard ‘surprise! You can get pregnant!’ trope, the ‘you’re not who you think you are’ trope, the ‘Luke, I am your father’ trope plus a fair amount of ‘lack of communication’ and HUGE Big Misunderstanding. And I devoured it all with my big ole Suspend Your Disbelief spoon. Seth was just freaking adorable and, surprisingly, Ra had a goofy side that was endearing as all get out. Ra’s biker buddies/gang/whatever were great too and I hope we get their stories in the books to come.

To be honest, I hesitated to read this one. I had tried to read one of the author’s earlier works a while back but I ended up bailing on it because of a severe lack of editing. This one, I’m happy to say, has much less editing issues. There were still a few errors (misuse of homophones, incorrect use of a turn of phrase, etc.) but, I was able to get past (<- see? this is the correct usage of a homophone) them due to the amount of charm this book exudes.

Plus, how can you go wrong with this:

He’d been thinking about it a lot though and his favorite idea was a tiny rabbit with tiger stripes.

On the brain candy scale, I would say this is like a variety bag. It’s got a little bit of everything to satisfy your sweet tooth, all wrapped up in individual fun-sized packaging. Enjoyable as a treat every now and then but eat too many in a row and you wind up with a stomachache and a couple of cavities.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Didn't do it for me*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

This book is a real case of ‘one step forward, two steps back’ theme, which makes it really hard to connect with the couple. Rabbit shifter Seth Carmichael (in his twenties: forgot how old he is) and tiger shifter Ra (over 150) are true mates. They met, they mate and Seth get's pregnant; apparently he's adopted and is half something else which makes it possible for him to get pregnant. However, mating - and pregnant - life isn't going how Seth wanting things to go; he wants his mate, but his mate isn't understanding in how Seth wants things. Ra wants nothing than to be the best for his mate, but he isn't so romantic, yet he tried and that goes wrong too. How are Seth and Ra supposed to do this? To be mates and parents and getting to know each other properly? Can they survive this?
“Guess we’ve got a lot to learn about this being mated business,” Ra chuckled. He tapped Seth on the nose. “Communication. You told me that our first day. Communication goes both ways.”

Seth annoyed me real hard; he kept wanting thing, yet didn't open his mouth to let Ra know, so when Ra does something wrong, Seth just cries and leaves. Ra is really trying, he is, but when is it ever good enough? Specially when he doesn't know what he's doing wrong... Frankly, Seth is a bit manipulative, but I know - I just do - that the author didn't mean for it to look that way. Overall, this book was kinda ridiculous, with weird writing and a story that didn't work for me. I didn't like how things were handled, and I didn't like how nothing seem to fit. I mean, at some point I even though; this is even unnatural in a shifter book; the length of the pregnancy for example.
“What I will say, is despite how we’re depicted in romance novels; love isn’t something that comes automatically, even for mates. Love is not a destination, it’s a journey.” Ra noticed Brutus watching them intently. “Like any journey, it’s not always easy; some people fall back, some people fall off the road, but shifters, true mated shifters never let go of each other, never give up and are always there for each other no matter what life throws at them. That’s how it is for Ra and Seth.”

There was also the fact that there was insta-love, yet I didn't feel any of the connection between the characters, nor did I feel like they knew each other at all. I knew straight away that I wasn't going to like this book all that much, but I had hope it was just my strong migraine that I got when I started it. So I decided to continue - and finish - it once I was okay; simply because I hate giving up. Truth be told, I wish I hadn't wasted so much time on it :/
“You’re special to me,” Ra said, giving his own skin a brisk rub down before returning his focus to where he knew in his heart it belonged. He couldn’t explain it. The feelings that swamped his body. Love. Protectiveness. Those he could understand but for some reason this time it was more…bigger…and Ra didn’t want to explain it, he wanted to wallow in it.

I guess I need to create an "everybody loved this but me" bookshelf, because I honestly am not understanding the 5 star love this book is getting.

Definitely over the top, WAY too much drama going on - between Seth and Ra, their families, you name it, there was a problem that popped up in their relationship. Overdramatic times between Seth and Ra especially (like how do you work because you're freaking out your mate is pregnant and don't realize FOUR days have gone by?!) And Seth was hot and then cold with the relationship. Both of them were kinda all over the place.

I think had there been fewer issues and less story, I could overlook the fluffiness and over-the-top cute-sy stuff, but this one dragged on for me and even with the mpreg and mates aspect, it was too much for me.

Somewhere between 3 & 3.5*

This was a fluffy shifter story. I really loved Seth. He may be all fluffy bunny, but he handed Ra his ass when it was necessary. I liked Ra, but I LOVED his friends. They will help hide a body. No questions asked.

My only real issue with this book was the length. I think this could have been much better if it was maybe half the length. I know part of it was world building, but there were parts of the story that could have been left out or left for future books.

Bottom line... will I read more of this series? If the future installments involve Ra's friends, then heck yea.

Nope, that's it, I'm done. Chapter 13 jumped the shark. Ra is angry at his mate for getting preggers? He asks the others if Seth has been bragging about the pregnancy but worse is too stupid to realize he lost FOUR DAYS, hasn't spoken to his mate for four days but is upset when he thinks Seth might have left him?!? Douchebag! Ignore a newly pregnant and scared mate for four days and then get upset and put the blame at their feet for stuff, then cry and feel incredulous that your mate left without a word (after you told him not to bother you, I might add) and then expect sympathy?? Dumb, just dumb.

My GR friend Ruth Laureano 5 starred this book so I had to read it. Oh Boy! It sure was silly, fun, smexy and sweet. In some ways, it reminded me of Eve Langlais's FUC series. Ra and Seth were such a great fit for each other. Ra had me in stiches - poor guy couldn't win for losing. Many fully developed plot lines - very satisfying. Fantastic job on the mpreg - the best I've read so far.

I mostly enjoyed this. It was a pretty solid 3 star book, but all the drama at the end with the was very rushed and unnecessary.

Also, Seth’s mother is a birch and it’s annoying how she is excused for being belittling and overbearing because she is loves Seth sooo much and is just overprotective and wants what’s best for him.

A bunny, a tiger, a pregnancy, magical shit...what's not to like about that?!? Well Ra. He was trying, I think, but still came across as a super douchey mate when Seth got pregnant. All he seemed to do was make Seth feel bad. Interesting little town they lived in with tons of fun characters so I can see this series being a guilty pleasure. Even though the words and situations are supposed to be pretty angsty, these books don't really make me want to weep into my hankie. I'm sure I'll continue with the series because I did enjoy this for a cute shifter, mpreg read.

Good start to a new series. I enjoy Ms Olivers shifters and this one is no exception. Seth is really cute and I enjoyed Ra and his struggles at being a mate. There are a lot of interesting secondary characters and I'm looking forward to more from them

I didn't like the book so let's keep it short and simple I guess.

- I did like that he was a scared rabbit and couldn't control his shifts at the beginning

- I HATE the whole virgin omega/experienced alpha trope (it isn't a omegaverse book but you get what I mean)

- Ra was a huge asshole and didn't grovel enough in my opinion

- Their relationship was not great, even with a mating bond their relationship felt fragile. If they didn't have a bond I believe that they wouldn't have stayed together. (At least for most of the book)

- Maybe the worst couple I ever read

- The way sex was handled in this book was such a turn off!! They were so horny they fucked even with 3 broken ribs? Sure.

- It felt very much like Seth was the housewive and Ra the macho husband

- No care taking even though Seth was on the run and skinny, almost killed and had a high risk pregnancy

- Ra often selfish and clueless
Seth often insufferable
Seth mother a total bitch

- The other guys in the house were great though

- Unanswered questions
What's up with Garreth?

- The epilogue was bad

I guess I didn't keep it short. Whatever, I'm disappointed.
Plus the last couple of chapters made me cry the whole time and now my emotions are all over the place.

Yay! A new Lisa Oliver and a NEW series!

This does not appear to be linked to any of the other “worlds” Lisa has given us and is definitely a standalone – for now.

Though you don’t get this from the blurb – I was worried about it myself! – Ra and Seth have only just found out they’re mates when Seth is forced to run from his herd for being “mated” to an animal who is not a rabbit.

When we meet our characters they are just now beginning the process, however, and it’s pretty funny. Ra – no last name- is a big, bumbling, buffoon of a Tiger shifter and he seems to do everything wrong.

Seth, meanwhile, is sweet, but a little scared of Ra’s animal, and also very worried about both their safety.

What I enjoyed about this, is with one notable exception, everyone is a bit flawed. Seth isn’t perfect and Ra certainly isn’t. Seth’s mother isn’t bad, but she’s not good either. Ra’s buddy’s while helpful, aren’t always doing the right thing either.

Lisa is really good at having our MCs and the secondary characters shift and act like their animals – so that was fun. Plus we get a bit of a twist thrown in around the 70% point that really shakes the story up.

This was highly enjoyable, well-written, and very satisfying!

4.25 (rounded to 4.5) of 5 stars

I don't often give 5 stars, but this was just so darn good. It made me laugh and it made me cry. My family looked at me like I was crazy when I laughed. Thank god they were asleep by the time I was ugly crying. Don't want to give anything away, but it's been over a year since I even had the urge to write a review. It was that good. Don't miss reading it.

Rating: 3.5 stars. First of all, I loved Seth and Ra. Both were not without faults. Ra especially seemed a bit over the top. I also loved all of Ra's bike club. They were such wonderful characters and I hope the author continues writing about them in the future. I think the person who bothered me the most was Seth's mother. She was all over the place as a character. She starts out so likable and then by the end of the book, I actively disliked her. She wasn't totally bad, but was a bit all over the place. I thought the events that happened throughout the book were a bit over the top. I think the author tried to cram too much into this story. There were things that happened at the end of the story that weren't fully explained. I had some questions that I wished the author had answered. That being said, I did really enjoy it. I think it is a good start to a new series.

In the beginning I liked Seth. All the way up until he got pregnant. I understand being hormonal and emotional but damn. I started to feel sorry for Ra. He was guilted and manipulated by him so much it was painful to read. Seth at one point was saying how all he wanted was to be accepted for who he was. But he wasn't even accepting of who Ra was. No matter how hard he tried to change for him or do things to make him happy it just wasn't good enough. Seth made little to no effort to be a good mate in the relationship. Most of their problems could've been avoided if he had just communicated with Ra and not expected him to be a mind reader. His every move was selfish and inconsiderate. Also it seemed like everyone was in their business telling them what to do. It was irritating. I barely managed to finish this book.

This is a shifter book that hits all the regular tropes and I enjoyed it anyway. Seth and Ra are an odd pairing, you don’t see too many lop-eared rabbits and tigers as couples, but they are adorable together. There is a few bad guys thrown in and quickly dealt with, a little drama surrounding family, a group of lonely shifters to pair up in the sequels, and a lovely happily ever after. And the cherry on top is mpeg with triplets! There is actually a great deal of humor with the shenanigans of MCs and it is all over the top and a really fun easy read.

Really cute read. I admit I'm in the minority quite often with the big guy/little guy trope but...so what;) I loved the "pouncy" tiger with his little bunny. They were just so cute. Now the plot wasn't real original. It still played well and the little twists and turns on the characters and settings makes the story an interesting read. I'm interested in seeing more in this series.

En-JOY-ed It

It was a little to schmaltzy, a bit too insta-love, and the world-building slightly too condensed for my usual tastes...however!

However, the characters were well-thought out and believable. That goes for the MCs and the immediate peripherals. The emotions came across, the connections were there, I could feel the feelings in my gut and in my heart.

There are solid friendships, a genuine sense of community, deep and abiding love between two people, AND a subtle foreshadowing of more to come.

What more could you ask for? Re-read or not, I truly enjoyed this one all over again.

Loved this story!! At the beginning I was wondering how Lisa would tackle this (a tiger and a rabbit!!)but I shouldn't have worried. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with Ra and Seth. This was one of the best from Lisa that I have read and I hope her writing angels send her further inspiration from Arrowtown so we can catch up with the rest of the gang and see the triplets grow.

5 awesome stars.

Not your regular paranormal mpreg story

Loved it. Look forward to more from this universe and Lisa. It had some dark parts and presented in a refreshing way. It's not just Insta-love although it starts that way. Seth and Ra still had to work at their relationship, and their families try to butt in with interesting results. More to come on my blog.

HOW does this have 4,05 stars? Fucking how?! Did I read the same book as everyone else?

This was a mess from start to finish. I thought maybe just the start was bad and it would get better a couple of chapters in. I mean, those 5 star ratings had to come from something. But by god, it just got progressively worse.

So let's do a quick run-down of the main stuff I hated.

1) Pacing
This was so unbearably rushed. The story starts in the oddest place, with Ra on his bike about to find his mate in a tree. Apparently Seth has been on the run from the herd for two weeks after discovering Ra was his mate. I'm sorry what? You don't think we should maybe have started around that point instead? So anyways, Ra does a sexy dance and this makes Seth come down from the tree. Cue roaring away on Ra's bike to his place.
The pacing is just 2Fast2Furious for the rest of the story.

2) The justice system, court scene, and Town

3) Gender Roles the Sequel
Ra is top, big He-man. Ra has no last name, but . Ra is a big predator tiger. Ra likes Seth always cooking breakfast for him.
Seth is a sweet UwU bottom, bunny rabbit. He's the one who gets pregnant.
Also Ra is older and very sexually experienced while Seth is a virgin who saved himself for "mate-hood" or whatever.
Why bother writing gay romance if you're just going to choke it with heteronormativity.

4) Did this go through an editor?
There were so many spelling errors and weird sentences in this thing.

5) The birth
As a med student... I was in pain reading this. The infections this would cause... the damage... But at least the author knew to mention that rabbits burn through medication quick, right?! WHAT GREAT RESEARCH!

God, fuck this. Don't read it. It's like a bad wattpad story. In fact you can find something better than this and free on wattpad. Don't waste your money.

Let me start by saying this. I love Lisa Oliver's work. Her Cloverleah series and Gods made me do it spin off are some of my favorite series in the genre. This however, was not my favorite by her. Maybe its because I read the others first but I felt like maybe this was an earlier work? The MCs didn't have the chemistry I am used to seeing from her. I personally never really warmed up to either MC. Seth struck me as whiny and Ra was kind of an idiot. The man finds out his mate is preggers and he disappears for 4 days, then accuses him of potentially bragging about it to his friends. Bad form Ra. Bad form.

Strangely enough, I really liked the side characters. Liam was a sweetie pie and Simon intrigued me. I think I will definitely give the next book a shot. This could be a one off and as I said, Lisa Oliver is usually a hit out of the park for me. Sadly, this one wasn't.

DNF 33% and I gave up

I'm sorry if this gives away any plot spoilers but I just couldn't envision a full grown tiger being all previous and OTT and the rabbit is more girly than a princess.
The characterisation is so cliche it's a positive nail against blackboard.
It's written as if a fourteen year old dreamed it up.
If MPREG is your genre then go for it and purchase the book, it's got little to do with a traditional shifter genre though so be aware.
I don't think I will be purchasing more by this author

Rating (All ratings use a Scale of 1-5) = 3 stars as both braincandy and overall. Parts of the reading were 2.5, but then at other points it was 4 stars. It can only be described as brain candy. It had the potential to be much better but had issues that really effected my level of enjoyment.

Blurb = 4

My Genre Scale =
- Shifters are a 5 star genre for me;
- Braincandy is typically about a 3 for me. I neither love nor hate it. Sometimes I do find myself in the mood.
- Mpreg is also 3 Stars

Odds if not your genre = 1

Development of: =
*World = 2.5
*Plot = 3.5
*Characters = 3 Stars; The concept of a tiger and floppy eared bunny was great as were many of the scenes dealing with their animal forms. The problem was they kept getting in their own way and each had unlikable moments. For me, they had potential chemistry but it never sizzled.

What stood out = The choice Ra had to make for Seth and his family; also Annabelle.

Mood Type / Appeal to those looking for = Braincandy that has some real poignant moments. A biker club that loves babies. Interesting shifters and their towns.

Warnings = MPREG + Feels a little contrived at times,

HFN/HEA = HEA

Series Notes = 1st of 6 as of Oct. 2021
*Reading on? Not immediately and quite possibly not at all
*Reading back to back? N/A
*Can be easily read without the previous? N/A

Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... )
The story felt disjointed at times and did not always flow smoothly. The background and timeline of previous interactions was muddled. I did feel the author did a great job in the final resolution. Overall, it was an okay read.

***************
I am way off my usual rate of reading over the last 11+ years. Real life has hit hard this year. Most recently with the death of my mother, and I had just been getting back into the swing of things. More upheaval appears to be on the horizon, but it has as much potential to be good as bad. I have no idea what that means for the rate of my reading and reviewing, but we will see...
***************
Below is my philosophy on reviewing!
***************
1. I try to take into account and note common pet peeves often bemoaned by others.
2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation. (What is brain candy? Publishing industry 's version of pop music - Typically: formulaic, from a prolific author published often and quickly (like monthly), things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc..)  It has its uses: to pass time when tired, on the beach, etc...  The problem comes  when "brain candy" is unexpected or even disguised.
3. Blurb rating purpose:
Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it; I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb.
4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2021) was a 3.64 average for 1527 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 795 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.

I love shifter stories but this one was not for me at all, I stopped like 2 hours into listening to this book because I was cringing so hard I really had to stop. I should have stopped at the first chapter but I thought it was going to get better wish didn't happen, I hope my English is understandable didn't want to write in German. So this are my personal thoughts 🤔 the first chapter, Ra was looking for his mate so he did a wird dance and the rabbit came to him ✌️🙄✌️ ok whatever , then rabbit guy is like (oh you have to take me to them you'll get alot of money) like what ? Then he followed Ra home and met his friend ( I taught cats are lone predators so why is Ra living with his friends?) The town thing was wird ( so you are tell me that in a shifter town no one knew about that law ? The sheriff trying to arrest Ra was pretty stupid I don't know anything about law enforcement but that didn't make sense at all ). I know this was supposed to be a cute story about a big bad cat and a small rabbit (but the rabbit was too rabbit for me , narrators voice when he talks like the rabbit is pretty annoying to me I wanted to listen to a man talk not the fucking one girl) the fact that Ra get paid up to $300,000 for his art and still live with his friends I don't understand that was where I stopped .
