I love every book in the Ellis the Elephant series. They're the perfect introduction to American history for our nearby grandchildren (ages 3, 5 and 7) as the simple lessons are written in rhyme which, along with the adorable illustrations, captures the attention of the youngest but provide teaching moments for the older ones. Our 7-year-old grandson is one of those children who loves to learn, so the Resource section in the back of each book goes into more depth about the various topics and historical places to visit.
Ellis the Elephant loves to learn about important moments in our history. In previous books, he has learned about the Pilgrims and the Presidents as well as many other events. Now he is sharing all he learned about our fabulous First Ladies.
Our First Ladies' contributions to history have been quite significant and yet they seem to take a back seat to the Presidents. Ellis takes us back in time to several First Ladies and with a lyrical rhyme shares important highlights from their time in office. From Dolly Madison saving Washington's portrait in a fire to Abigail Fillmore adding a library to the White House to Edith Wilson helping her husband run the country during his illness, Ellis shows us the important roles of the First Ladies. The writing is absolutely creative and informative in usually just four sentences for each First Lady. There is just enough information to keep the kids interested in each of their achievements.
What really impressed me were the illustrations. I could identify each First Lady just by looking at the pictures. Arciero is extremely talented and creates images of the First Ladies as well as the inside of the White House that are as close as a photograph, yet softer.
Even though not every First Lady is featured in the story, the end of the book features a paragraph about every First Lady and their contributions while in office, including the current First Lady, Melania Trump. This is truly a wonderful book
This book is perfect for younger elementary-aged children and would make a great addition to school and home libraries. I'll be gifting my copy to the elementary school I substitute teach in.
My adorable and precocious 6-year-old daughter is obsessed with all things to do with American history since I got her interested in Hamilton a couple of years ago. Love that trait in her as I do, she sometimes brings home questionable books just because they look historical-ish. This happened to be an amusing but disturbing example, that I am still at a loss to discuss with her thus far. Sigh. I'm judgemental of this book, and probably partly because Callista is married to a pretty crappy dude. The other major parts of objection for me were to do with the really happy-looking black people in the scene with Martha Washington (seriously? I mean, think of when this was), and how Michelle Obama's successes felt like they were made trivial by how they were portrayed.
Oh, and the rhyming sucked. Badly.
Does my kid notice this stuff? Not really. Is it a book she enjoyed? Yeah, and she really liked the little bios of each first lady at the end. So, all in all, it's not a terrible option for kids who are into American history, but there are certainly much better reads for them out there.
This darling picture book highlights many of America's First Ladies. It is well written with the rhyming format, and the illustrations are so cute! I love that it highlights the women in these presidents' lives because really, they aren't discussed very often. I actually learned a lot from this book! Who knew that some presidents' wives didn't want the job so a daughter, relative, or friend took over for her? It spotlights women from both parties, and at the end there is a paragraph written about each of them. I love that the title comes from Abigail Adams from a letter she wrote to her husband asking him to "Remember the ladies" as they founded the country. This would be a great addition to any school or home library. It will sit great next to "Hail to the Chief" on my shelf. I did receive a free book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. You may read my full review on my book blog: www.the-readathon.blogspot.com.
I am familiar with Ellis the Elephant after reviewing two previous books in the series. I have also reviewed Christmas in America and Hail to the Chief in this series.
In this book Ellis learns about some of the first ladies. I liked the rhyming text and how it spotlights how each first lady has her own significant contributions to our country.
This book is geared for children aged 4-9. It would be appropriate for an elementary classroom/library or for your personal library. At the close of the book is 7 pages with a listing of all the first ladies with a paragraph about each one.
This book makes it fun to learn some of our country's history. Plus the elephant is pretty cute too!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review. Thank you.

I thought this book was really cute. The rhymes were fun, although I did stumble over some of them while reading aloud. I read it to my 5 year old, and it didn’t really hold her attention. It might be better for a kid who can read alone with little assistance. The illustrations were very well done.
Weird side note, it smells so good. Like a new high school yearbook.
Ellis the Elephant and America’s First Ladies...What more could we ask for in a cute historical fiction title!? It is well written with the rhyming format, and the illustrations are so cute! I love that it highlights the women in these presidents' lives because really, they aren't discussed very often. It spotlights women from both parties, and at the end there is a paragraph written about each of them—up to and including Melania Trump. This would be a great addition to my classroom library.
An educational fun way to learn about the First Ladies of the White House. What their accomplishments were while serving as First Ladies--- told by a sweet little baby elephant named Ellis. The book is well written, easy to understand and has absolutely astounding, wonderful illustrations – great book to read aloud to classes and or seniors in nursing homes would probably enjoy also!
I received this book free through GoodReads giveaways. This was a very cute and informative book. I liked the idea of talking about presidents wives since so many books focus on the presidents. It showed how the first ladies of the white house are also heroes and everything they have contributed to the country.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. This is a darling, educational book on America's First Ladies. It's very positive and educational. I will donate to the school library and I'm sure the little kids will enjoy it.
I received from Goodreads- this is a great book to learn about what some of the first ladies have done. it's just a little about a few of them but might get you where you want to learn more about them.
A fun educational read for young children or anyone who wants to pick up a few facts about our First Ladies. The wonderful illustrations and rhyming verses are truly enjoyable.
The book starts out showing many of the first ladies, but then leaves many out. The rhymes felt a little forced and cheeky, and the elephant (while I realize a series) seemed out of place. Good facts and illustrations, though.
