Here, killer, killer, killer. . .

For the first time in sixteen years, Lara Caphart has returned to her hometown of Whisker Jog, New Hampshire. She wants to reconnect with her estranged Aunt Fran, who’s having some difficulty looking after herself—and her eleven cats. Taking care of a clowder of kitties is easy but keeping Fran from being harassed by local bully Theo Barnes is hard. The wealthy builder has his sights set on Fran’s property, and is determined to make her an offer she doesn’t dare refuse.

Then Lara spots a blue-eyed ragdoll cat that she swears is the reincarnation of her beloved Blue, her childhood pet. Pursuing the feline to the edge of Fran’s yard, she stumbles upon the body of Theo Barnes, clearly a victim of foul play. To get her and Fran off the suspect list, Lara finds herself following the cat’s clues in search of a killer. Is Blue’s ghost really trying to help her solve a murder, or has Lara inhaled too much catnip?

Lara Caphart used to be extremely close to her Aunt Fran when she was growing up in Whisker Jog, New Hampshire but then her parents decided to move away. Over the last sixteen years Lara hadn't been in contact with her aunt but she had kept in touch with one of her childhood friends from the small town that notifies her that her aunt really could use her help.

Lara decides that a visit to Whisker Jog is in order and that she needs to spend a few days helping out her aging aunt. After arriving Lara finds that Aunt Fran now has eleven cats she's caring for and the local bully, Theo Barnes, pressuring her to sell her land. Lara jumps in helping with the cleaning and care of the cats but before a plan could be made to deal with Theo he turns up nearby murdered so Lara begins to ask around to see who may have killed him.

Escape Claws by Linda Reilly is the first book in the new cozy Cat Lady Mysteries series. While I thought this was a solid and likable start to the series, one that cat lovers will definitely enjoy, I did find a few things in it I questioned leaving me to rate this opener at 3.5 stars.

The main character in the story along with her aunt were both likable enough but I found some actions to be contradictory along the way. Finances were mentioned with both characters but just as an example Lara has a rental car for her extended stay, not sure where she would find the money for such an expense along with other things. But with that said there was a touching emotional side for the animal lovers to put so much into their care and sacrifice for them too.

There were other things along the way that just seemed to not connect very well too but the mystery was a pretty good one for a cozy read. I did also kind of question the inclusion of the ragdoll cat as it gave the story a paranormal type of vibe but that also felt a bit off in this type of book. I'd still be interested in checking back in with the characters in book two though to see where the story headed next.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Linda Reilly is one of my very favorite authors. And her newest book, the first installment of her Cat Lady Mysteries, ESCAPE CLAWS, was one of my most anticipated books of 2017. On. My. Goodness. It completely lived up to my expectations! Purrfection!

ESCAPE CLAWS opens with an introduction to the Cast of Feline Characters. With a dozen cats in the story, this list is a wonderful and welcomed addition to the book. And Kudos to author Reilly for managing to give each cat its own distinct personality.

From page one, I knew this was a tale I wanted to read. Not just the mystery, but the story of protagonist, Lara Caphart, coming back to her hometown of Whisker Jog (love it) to help her Aunt Fran not only with her eleven cats, but with herself. With bad knees, Fran Clarkson is moving slow, and not able to do as much for herself and her kitty kids. There is tension at the very beginning when Lara doesn’t get greeted very fondly by her aunt. However, both characters grow immensely from the first page to the last, and I can’t wait to see them grow even more throughout the series.

The murder mystery in ESCAPE CLAWS is expertly handled by the author. Ms. Reilly truly knows how to keep her readers on their paws. From the discovery of the body, to the surprising reveal, I didn’t come close to guessing the killer. There is also a second mystery mixed into the story. Between the two of them, I was so entranced, reading for a couple of hours turned into “I’m not getting out of this chair until I’m finished”.

Starting a new series is both thrilling and exciting. You go into it with high hopes. Well, worry not with the Cat Lady Mysteries. Once you start reading ESCAPE CLAWS, you’ll know you’ve found a series you’ll want to follow for many years to come!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lara hasn’t been home in quite a while, but when one of her friends contacts her about her Aunt Fran and her house full of cats she knows she needs to head back and reconnect with her aunt. She finds her aunt does not only need help with her felines but she has some medical issues to attend to as well. Fran is also being harassed by one of her neighbors who is determined to have a portion of her land. It seems Lara has arrived just in time. Just in time to find the bully, Theo Barnes dead on her aunt’s property and it wasn’t a natural death. She and her aunt quickly become the prime suspects so Lara adds “find the real killer” to her already long to do list. She may have an unlikely partner helping her solve the crime that makes her pursuit very interesting.

Aunt Fran, aka “the crazy cat lady” and Lara and all the feline companions have pawed their way right into my heart. Heck, if I had a place like Fran’s I would be a crazy cat lady too. Her genuine desire to care for these rescue kitties drew me into the story. Lara’s devotion to caring for her aunt and the cats was heartwarming. These are two formidable women and make a great team.

I like the way the author took time to introduce us to the characters, including the kittens. The first page of the story introduces the “Cast of Feline Characters” including Blue, a very important feline in this story. They are all unique with different personalities, just like real cats.

We also meet several other residents of Whisker Jog, friends and suspects. The victim was not well liked so many people should have been on the list of suspects but Police Chief Jerry Whitley set his sights on Fran and Lara immediately.

I am a big fan of Linda Reilly, all of her Deep Fried Mysteries were Perfect Escapes for me. I love the way she tells a story and sets the scenes. She has a very descriptive style that makes you feel you are right there with the characters. Again in Escape Claws, the mystery unfolds at a very comfortable pace. It was not an easy mystery to solve and it is offset by the inner turmoil Lara is facing. Her aunt needs her but she has to go back to her job. The storylines are woven together very skillfully.

You don’t need to love or even like cats to enjoy this story, but if you do you will absolutely love this book.

This series is off to a fabulous start! I cant’ wait to return to Whisker Jog!

Light cozy mystery filled with cute and lovable felines for your reading pleasure. The two main characters, artist Lara Caphart and her Aunt Fran, the crazy cat lady, will steal a place in your heart with the care and love they show to the rescue cats. Lara’s Aunt has 11 cats, and painful, bad knees that need surgery placing her in critical need for assistance taking care of herself and the kitties. Aunt Fran is also being harassed by a local bully, Theo Barnes, to sell part of her property to him so he can build some luxury condos. It’s not surprising when his body is found on Fran’s property casting suspicion on Fran, and ensuing a search for a demented killer.

My favorite scenes of the story are the ones with interaction with the different cats, and those are plentiful throughout the book. I also loved the paranormal twist surrounding Lara’s beautiful Ragdoll Cat, Blue. ❤️

A purrfect cozy mystery to curl up with and relax.

I give this book 5 out of 5 Purrrrfect Stars!!! I just adored this book!😄 The author did such a great job fullfilling my “crazy cat lady” needs!

Well I love all animals but have 5 cats 1 dog and 2 turtles so reading this book was blissful! Since I have rescued and foster animals this book really pulled at the strings of my heart.

This wasn’t your typical cozy mystery that has the sweet romance subplot while we figure out who killed the victim. This boon more focused on family, finding yourself and the love of the feline friends.

I really enjoyed Lara and Aunt Fran’s characterisation. I loved there genuine good souls and their love for animals.

I could relate to Lara in a sense and felt she was a good choice for a main character. I also really enjoyed that there was a bit of supernatural aspects thrown in the story.

The cats’ different personalities were great and I know from experience that cats and other animals do have their own personalities. If you are a feline lover or looking for a nice cozy I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next Cat Lady Mystery series!

Friday night I finished Escape Claws, Linda Reilly's first in the new A Cat Lady Mystery Series and it was so good! I very much enjoyed this start to what I hope will be a series with lots of books to come. I found that I was not only able to relate as a cat lover but as a cozy mystery lover as well. The mysteries are good in this the minor mystery pulls at your heartstrings for sure, the major mystery and murderer I did not figure out until the reveal and the teaser about the Aunt and niece relationship history makes you want to read further! I am very excited for other cozy lovers and cat lovers to pick this book up December 26th and see what I am talking about.

This was a really great start to a series, beginning with the unique introduction to twelve feline characters--each with his/her own name and personality. Lara is visiting her beloved Aunt Fran and notices how much difficulty she has maintaining her home, caring for all the cats, and keeping up with everyday chores due to her failing knee and other health issues. She isn't sure how long she can stay but is concerned when Aunt Fran tells her town bully Theo Barnes had been pressuring her aunt to sell her back property's acreage to him. When Theo is found dead of unnatural causes next to the shed on Aunt Fran's property, she naturally becomes their prime suspect. However, Theo has made plenty of enemies and there is no shortage of viable suspects.

The book is very well-written and reads at a comfortable pace. I felt a genuine affection and connection between Lara, Aunt Fran, and of course--all the cats. The longer she stays in town, Lara becomes more comfortable with her old life there and possibly her future. There is one elusive cat, Blue, who was Lara's childhood cat. How can he keep appearing only to disappear just as she is about to catch him? Blue brings a paranormal element to the cozy, but it does not dominate the story.

**Thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this book. My review is voluntary.

A new author for me and the first book in a new cat story. It was a slow beginning. There a number of excellent cats books being published this year and this another one. There is a hint of paranormal as Lara Caphart sees Blue, a ragtail cat that none else sees. Blue is a spirit of a car that Lara had had a child.
Lara decided to visit an aunt who needs some help. Aunt Fran has 11 cats of various ages and most are recused cats. The twin bully is found dead near Aunt Fran's property. His death is ruled suspicious and to made matters worse, the weapon, how belongs to Aunt Fran. The usual plot is used to set up the story and series about 1/2 through the plot changed and became interesting. Lara must decide rather stay and help her Aunt or return to her life in Boston. What will Lara decide? I recommend this book and looking forward to the next book.

This was a great book - full of mystery, cats, an interesting cast of characters, and murder. Lara is a kind and loving protagonist who desperately wants to help her ailing aunt. I wasn't sure what to think of Aunt Fran at first, but once I understood why she was on her guard, she grew on me. The elusive Blue (a cat that only Lara can see) is an interesting mix to the story, however I wish the backstory of Blue and Lara had come a little earlier in the book. I can't wait to read book #2

Alright, you see my reviews regularly. You know I wax poetical about many cozy mysteries, but this one was my favorite for the whole year! Yep, I went there, I made that commitment. I started reading cozies because of Lilian Jackson Braun, and it was this nostalgia that keeps me in the genre. Give me craft, tea, clothing, baking mysteries any time of the week and I'll probably love them but CAT mysteries are my absolute love and I can't find words for this one.

By the end I was basically growling with frustration because I desperately wanted everything to work out with Lara and Aunt Fran and I wanted my happy ending. At the same time I want more of these books and I have to wait until JUNE(!) next year! You can't give me Blue, Munster and the rest and then make me wait :(

A good cozy just takes you straight to the small town feel and never lets you go. A good cozy gives you mundane things like prepping dinner or getting groceries and makes you wish you were there experiencing it too. A good cozy gives you nosy neighbors, a strong love interest and an even stronger main character with a thirst for justice and a nose for crime. Truly great cozies give you everything; this one has everything.

So I've tried to explain my feelings for this book in this review, and hopefully I can convey a smidge of how good it is. If you love cozies, then this new series should definitely make it on your to-read list! Five stars, of course!

Meet Lara Caphart and her Aunt Fran Clarkson. Lara has returned to her old hometown in Whisker Jog, New Hampshire to check on Aunt Fran, her Grandmother's best friend. Lara had lost touch with Aunt Fran when her parents moved away, 16 years ago. Lara has learned that Aunt Fran desperately needs knee replacement surgery, but won't do it until she has someone to care for her 11 adopted cats and kittens. Aunt Fran also has a local business man trying to bully her into selling part of her extensive property for a development. Getting the cats and house cleaning under control is her first priority and then she has to decide if she is going to stay and make a new start in life with Aunt Fran or return to her current life in Boston. Then the bully is found dead on her aunt's property and she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. Lara adds solving a murder to her long list of things to do as she struggles to make a decision about staying or going!

I really enjoyed this series debut book and can't wait to read more about these beautiful cats and the very believable characters. The writing flows smoothly and the murder plot twists kept me guessing right to the surprising ending. A must read for cat and cozy lovers.

Charming characters, a puzzling mystery and CATS. ESCAPE CLAWS is everything a good cozy mystery should be!

Linda Reilly has done it again with this charming first in a new series. From the minute you step into the enchanting small town of Whisker Jog, you’ll want to settle in and stay awhile.

Lara is a sympathetic main character with a love for cats and a nose for mysteries. Her quirky Aunt Fran, recovering from surgery and the proud owner of eleven cats, provides refuge for Lara as she returns to Whisker Jog with some issues in her personal life and a desire to rekindle her relationship with her aunt.

And it turns out that Fran needs help in more ways than one. Not only is she not as mobile following surgery, but she’s forced to take on local developer Theo Barnes who wants Fran’s property and won’t take no for an answer. When he turns up dead, Lara and Fran are suddenly suspects in a murder case.

This hard-to-put-down cozy has a subtle paranormal element that adds an intriguing layer to the mystery. Lara’s childhood cat “Blue” seems to turn up at some interesting moments in the story. Lara has trouble separating fact from fiction, and not only about the elusive cat. There’s also a motley crew of suspects among the colorful Whisker Jog townspeople, and Lara’s got to do some serious digging to see who may or may not be telling the truth. I never figured out whodunit and I love that in a cozy mystery!

Cats and cozy mysteries are a delightful combination, but add Linda Reilly’s elegant writing style, charming characterizations and engaging descriptions of Whisker Jog in the throes of a New England autumn, and this is one cozy mystery you won’t want to miss!

I highly recommend ESCAPE CLAWS for all cozy mystery fans and especially for cat lovers. I’m looking forward to more of Lara and Aunt Fran’s adventures!

ESCAPE CLAWS, the first book in the brand new Cat Lady Mystery series by Linda Reilly is a charming visit to Whisker Jog, New Hampshire and is chock-full of memorable characters, human and feline alike! I loved that the very beginning starts with a list of the feline cast with their adorable names and characteristics. The protagonist, Lara Caphart, is an admirable woman with a generous, thoughtful personality. After showing up to help her invalid aunt care for the eleven cats she has taken in, Lara finds her aunt is being harassed by the town’s wealthy bully, Theo Barnes. When Lara is led to Theo’s murdered body by Blue, the Ragdoll cat from her childhood, she realizes she needs to stay in town and protect her aunt. There is a subplot mystery woven around the murder mystery of why Lara had become estranged from her beloved aunt after being so close to her as a young child. The author explores familial relationships and how they can go awry.

There is also an ongoing mystery of just who Blue, the Ragdoll cat is and where he came from, especially since Lara’s aunt claims she never had a Ragdoll cat. The murder mystery has plenty of suspects and the author provides enough clues to keep you guessing and turning pages. The reveal was a surprise that I didn’t see coming! I greatly admired that Ms. Reilly brings to light the plight of unwanted cats and the lack of facilities to humanely care for them. She provides a heartwarming conclusion to the story that will make you want to come back and read the next story in this series just as soon as it’s available.

I was provided an advance copy with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

After a long absence, Lara Caphart returns to her hometown of Whisker Jog in New Hampshire. Her Aunt Fran still lives there, but her health isn’t the best. Besides taking care of herself, she is taking care of 11 cats. Lara is more than ready to lend a helping hand.

Theo Barnes, however, wants Aunt Fran’s property. Lara sees them arguing, but has no idea why. Not long after, she finds Barnes’ dead body. The cops are focused on Aunt Fran being the guilty party, but Lara isn’t buying it. She’s determined to prove her aunt’s innocence and bring the real guilty party to justice.

This has been on my Kindle for a long time. I don’t know why I didn’t read it sooner. I absolutely loved it. I loved the human characters, but, of course, the felines are the ones I really loved.

The story moved at a fast-pace. It was chock-full of potential suspects. Theo wasn’t very well liked, to say the least. This book had everything I loved – cats, a mystery and an amateur sleuth I adored. Oh - also, a killer I didn't suspect at all. I’m so ready to get to the second book.

In Escape Claws by Linda Reilly, Lara Caphart drives from Boston to Whisker Job, New Hampshire when she gets word that her Aunt Fran is having difficulties after having had to retire early from teaching due to serious knee problems. It has been 15 years since Lara has seen her aunt, a situation they discover was created by Lara’s father’s suppression of their letters to each other. Fran has become the community cat-lady, with 11 cats that she has rescued, and she has started to let things go. Lara works hard to get things fixed up in the house and help her aunt get back on her feet.

This first-in-series starts out a bit somber, with Lara visiting her Aunt Fran for the first time in 16 years. With her aunt's bad knees and clowder of cats, Lara is concerned for Aunt Fran's well-being, both physically and emotionally. When someone who shares a history with Aunt Fran is killed, Lara feels compelled to stay with her aunt until the murderer is caught. By the end of the book, the general mood has been lifted, and I'm eager for a second book about Lara and Aunt Fran. There are some great supporting characters, too: Sherry, Lara's childhood friend; Daisy, Sherry's mother; Dora, former actress and Fran's friend; Jerry Whitley, police chief; and Gideon, lawyer and childhood friend of Lara. I had a hard time putting this book down, with the whodunit, the cats, and Lara & Aunt Fran's reconnection. I didn't guess the culprit until he/she was revealed, but the reveal was easy to understand and made sense. I'm so glad I got an ARC of this book, and am happy to give my honest review. Can't wait for the second book in the series!

I enjoyed reading this fantastic book by Linda Reilly.
Lara is a down to earth character who the reader will definitely connect with. Aunt Fran is a delightful addition to the series and she adds a definite spark to thi first in a new series.

Returning home to Whisper Jog, New Hampshire, Lara is convincing herself that it is only a temporary stay, helping to sort out her Aunt Fran;s health issues and to tame the control of all her adorable cats.

Naturally, this would not be a cozy mystery if murder was not involved and when Lara finds herself wrapped in a scary situation, she relies on her childhood friend, her beloved cat Blue, to help her out, To bad only Lara can see the cat.

Animal lovers and cozy mystery lovers alike will be thrilled with this new addition to the cozy mystery genre.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC of Escape Claws.
Mystery fans can grab their copy on December 26th, when Escape Claws releases.

Lara Caphart and her family moved from New Hampshire when she was young. Before that, she spent a lot of time at her Aunt Fran's. Family, College and trying to make ends meet consumed her life. After 16 years and a message from her childhood friend that her aunt needs her, Laura returns to Whisker Jog, NH. Her aunt is having major issues with deteriorating osteoarthritis, her cat smells like cat (she has 11 of them) and she is being bullied by a developer, Theo Barnes, who wants her land. Lara is not going to let her be threatened by anybody and offers to stick around and help her. Lara isn't in town long before she finds Theo Barnes' dead body. Suddenly both her and Aunt Fran are being questioned and fingerprinted by the police. The case heats up when another body is found. Is it a suicide? Or another murder?

Escape Claws is the first book in the new Cat Lady Mysteries series, and it is a good one. The characters are realistic, and a bit suspicious of Lara's appearance in town. They are small town, with all the quirks that come with it. I liked the relationship between Lara and her Aunt. Once they get by the initial awkwardness, they seem to be just as close as ever, after all they are family. There is a little touch of supernatural to the story as well. It appears that Lara has a spirit cat, that she had even when she was a child. I loved that part of the story, as the cat comes around when needed and is able to drop clues to Lara. The mystery moved a bit slowly, but being a first in the series, we had to get to know the characters, background and setting as well. I will say, I was completely surprised by the big reveal. The character had been in the story, but was not on my radar at all. I am looking forward to the second in this series, and luckily for me, it was recently released. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, with animals and a tad of the paranormal, pick this one up.

Linda Reilly is a new author to me and I was happy that I took a chance on Escape Claws, which is the first in a new series. I thought this was a charming start to the Cat Lady Mysteries. The author did a nice job of balancing the mystery with introducing her characters. Lara and her Aunt Fran are very likable characters and I enjoyed the storyline that centered on them renewing their relationship after not really seeing each other for a good number of years. Lara is very personable, warm and comes across as genuine. There is a nice cast of secondary characters as well. The mystery was woven into the story nicely. The victim was not well liked by people in the town so this affords the author to weave in clues to misdirect the reader about the killer's identity.

I found this first book to be an enjoyable read that kept me entertained. I voluntarily read an advanced copy provided to me by Lyrical Underground, the publisher, through Netgalley.

Having recently enjoyed a few “cozy mysteries” on audio, as read by some of my favorite narrators, I thought I’d give an unknown a try. This is how I ended up listening Escape Claws, the first title in the Cat Lady Mysteries. While the premise was interesting and the mystery quite good, the overall presentation of the book didn’t work for me.

Lara is a twenty-something artist living above a bakery shop in Boston. For various, never really specified reasons, she never went back to visit her beloved aunt after Lara and her parents left their small New Hampshire town for the bright lights of Massachusetts. Having recently reconnected with her BFF from childhood (Lara moved when she was six), she finds out that her aunt is struggling with her health, taking care of her numerous cats, and is being harassed by a local businessman. This prompts Lara to head back to her roots. However, shortly after she arrives, said businessman is found murdered on her aunt’s property, keeping Lara in place until everything is cleared up.

The mystery of who killed Theo Barnes is exciting, holding my interest until the end, despite my issues with the book. I also enjoyed watching Lara reconnect with her aunt. While I’m a bit baffled why her family never visited after they moved (NH is not that far from greater Boston), I excepted that there were probably some unexplained family drama we aren’t privy to. Lara internalizes her guilt over abandoning her favorite aunt, which allows her to contemplate where she’s heading in her life, giving her character some depth.

However, the book itself was slow, and it felt extremely dated. Lara, age 27, uses terms like “flipity-flopity” and “presses her jeans.” These are not typical actions of any 27-year-old I have been around, reminding me of Ned Flanders from the Simpsons. Additionally, at one point, characters outright put down the romance and erotic romance genres, which turned me off. The book is set in present time, but the way the author develops her characters and the setting feels old to me. Finally, some of the characters are annoying and some of the towns’ folks come across stereotypical in nature.

The narration by Ms. Beaulieu is decent; solid at times, but confusing at others. There are times when characters’ voices sounded similar, making it difficult to distinguish between them. Also, there were two cats with very similar sounding names, and I was confused for chapters, thinking it was just one cat. (Cats play a critical role in the book.) Finally, some of the voices she uses for the more annoying characters, were grating.

In the end, I enjoyed the mystery and the connections between Lara and her aunt. I liked meeting the different town’s folk while trying to figure out whodunit. The town is picturesque but the residents are almost out-of-time. If you enjoy quaint, small town cozy mysteries and cats, you may enjoy Escape Claws. It just wasn’t my cup of tea!

Escape Claws by Linda Reilly is the first in a new cozy mystery series and I'm already anticipating the next one in this series.

Lara returns home of Whisker Jog, New Hampshire after having been gone for sixteen years to visit her Aunt Fran who needs help. Although she hasn't kept in touch with Aunt Fran, Lara has kept in touch with a friend who alerted her to the fact that Aunt Fran needs help. Lara started to slowly fall in love again with Whisker Jog as she tries to reconnect with her Aunt and make amends for not keeping in touch with her over the years. I really liked Lara and felt that she was sincere in her feelings for her aunt. I also liked that she is an artist which is quite different from many of the other cozy mysteries out currently. I was on pins and needles to see what decision Lara would make about staying or leaving Whisker Jog again.

Ms. Reilly's descriptive writing made me feel very comfortable in Whisker Jog and the many characters that were introduced were extremely likable. The plot moved swiftly and there were plenty of suspects after the town bully, Theo Barnes, was murdered. The twists kept me guessing along with the clues provided by Blue, the rag doll cat/ghost.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Underground via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

This is a lovely and well written mystery set in New Hampshire. Featuring a senior lady who has eleven cats and her younger relative, an artist, who comes from Boston to help when ill health arrives.

I enjoyed the entire tale from the emphasis on small business and unspoilt environment, to the many playful and cuddly cats, including a perhaps ghostly Ragdoll. Lots of great human characters, well developed with genuine motivations, and an artist who actually creates art.

I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley and Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.

This book had a few things going for it, including a semi-feral cat called Ballou (wrong colour though) but a lot of it just didn't quite gel. The solution to the mystery wasn't very well thought out and there were several logical procedural questions that caught my attention.

Synopsis:

Here, killer, killer, killer . . .

For the first time in sixteen years, Lara Caphart has returned to her hometown of Whisker Jog, New Hampshire. She wants to reconnect with her estranged Aunt Fran, who’s having some difficulty looking after herself—and her eleven cats. Taking care of a clowder of kitties is easy, but keeping Fran from being harassed by local bully Theo Barnes is hard.

(Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. I really liked the relationship between Lara and Aunt Fran. They had not seen each other for a long time, because Lara has not come to visit. Although there is some tension and hurts feelings, you can tell that their love for each other has never waivered. I enjoyed reading about them working through those feelings and becoming a family again. Lara is a likable, warm, hardworking woman and she wants to help her aunt in anyway she can. I thought the secondary characters added a lot to the story and I enjoyed meeting all of the characters. And all of the was an added bonus and variety, with all of their differing personalities. And there was even a bit of paranormal in this book, courtesy of Blue, Kara’s ragdoll cat.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through most of the book, I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. She is also very talented in building suspense with the written word. I found myself turning pages as fast as I could to see what was going to happen next.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery was well plotted and difficult to solve. There were enough suspects to consider, clues to sift through and twists and turns that I did not figure it out until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This is a great first book in the series and I am looking forward to reading the next book.

I received a free copy of the book from NetGalley in exchange of a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Potevo farmi scappare una serie intitolata "La signora dei gatti"? Ovviamente no!
La zia della protagonista vive con ben 11 mici, ognuno dei quali viene presentato a inizio libro in una lista dei "personaggi felini"; a loro si aggiunge Blue, il gatto "speciale" di Lara, la protagonista. Ho adorato i vari mici!

Cat lady, cats and murder!

Such a fun book! I loved the two main characters and the cats. A good mystery too. Can't wait for more of this series.
