Marvel’s gamble paid off and Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the year’s biggest hits, critically and commercially. Part of the big screen magic rubbed off on Skottie Young’s superb debut issue of Rocket Raccoon as it ended up being July’s biggest selling comic.

Rocket discovers he’s not the last of his kind alive, except the other Raccoon-alike is trying to kill him! And that’s not all – Rocket’s many, many exes are on the warpath, as well as the authorities. With the help of his bestie Groot, he’s got to break out of jail and escape without getting murdered.

Fans of the movie should check out this comic not least because Young’s lively treatment of the character and his world mirrors the energy and fun of the film. As Rocket says in the movie, he’s broken out of dozens of prisons, and we see him breaking out of one in this issue – with a little help from his little (and then suddenly massive!) friend Groot. That’s after a brilliant interrogation scene with Rocket’s jailers as they try to squeeze him for info only to be met with movie quote after movie quote.

Young’s art is beautifully stylish in this issue like it always is. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s highly exaggerated and warped but perfectly presented and cool – it’s also perfectly suitable for kids. Young handles the jailbreak scene imaginatively, drawing a board game-esque splash page that takes the reader’s eye around the pages in a perfectly compressed and brilliant sequence.

That Rocket, Groot and another mad alien criminal drive off in a space Cadillac quoting classic TV shows at the end is part of the reason why I’m enjoying this free-wheeling series so much. It’s such fun and feels like Young’s having as great a time making these comics as the audience is reading it. RR#2 is an excellent second issue in this wonderful new series – it appeals to a very broad range from fans of the movie, who will find it very accessible, to Marvel zombies, to anyone who simply enjoys a good comic.

2014 is turning out to be the year of the raccoon!

Amazing art with in its labyrinth of visual storytelling. Funny as well. I never laugh out loud when reading but an early True Detective reference really hit the spot. Loved it.

Well, since Rocket made everything easier and turned himself in - it's time to put his plan in action and who is to do it with him beside his close friend Groot.

You know, when he said he should let the creep eat all Groot's splinters I thought it was a harsh thing to say and at the end of the first issue and I was like (But! What happened to Groot!?) Even when he pulled him out of his mouth, I got (Wha! Why would you put him in there?! That's not nice!) and as if the writer knew what I was thinking of, he did apologized to Groot. Then there's the thing about his growth. I have 3 different information now. In Groot's comic, he grows really fast from baby's level to bigger than the adult with solar energy. I guess that makes sense logically. Then here, he grew big with just water? Kinda odd. In another comic, he was stuck in the baby stage cause something was rubbing his energy from grow back to adult quickly. That was understandable too. I guess the filmmakers liked the idea of the audience falling in love with him more so they kept him in baby level in the second vol. while in reality he can grow back really fast.

My thought about this issue?!
Love! Love! Love! 5 stars and more. Can't wait to read the next one.

3.5. Probably even deserves a 4, but here is my big issue, this is categorized as a “marvel kids” book and this is definitely not for kids. I found it entertaining, but I’d say the kids should be more like 10 or 12 to understand what is happening and what is and is not appropriate.

Stick to Figment or something else for the younger kids.

This issue definitely still has issues like the last issue, but I thought it was a little funnier some of the time and somewhat more interesting.

A very fun read. Young really does a good job in both writing and drawing the comic. I love the escape montage and Groot's entrance. Rocket is made into an amazingly charismatic and funny character. I definitely want to continue reading the series.

My review is pretty much the same as the first of the story-arc. The pace is just too fast for me to enjoy it. I felt like I was thrown from one action sequence into the other without pause and the humour didn't hit the mark much...

*** I read the digital version of it ***
