I’m always tepid when it comes to reading romances where the guy (or even the girl) was married before because sometimes (most of the times) the hero or heroine always end up as second best.
I honestly hate that.
I kept reading because I don’t quit but I was ready to DNF at any moment. But thankfully the heroine was not second best. The first marriage it was more about duty than love.
The book ended and I only was left with a little big tiny huge question…
WHAT ABOUT THE GODDAMN CURSE? SHE JUST ENDS UP WITH IT? SHE NEVER TELLS HIM? WHATTTT?
Maybe the other books in there series will circle back to it ( they better!).

This bad boy was a kinda a quick little read and pretty fast paced. It literally grabbed you from the very beginning and holds you until the end.
I think this is my second book by this author but this one had a much different feel to it. Where I remember the first being a little more lighthearted this one had a more aggressive feel to it, but not overly aggressive, just enough to make it different. This was also had a paranormal aspect to it which was a nice little turn, although I feel we kinda got left hanging where that area was concerned.
Right from the beginning Elle is thrown into a predicament that will effect her future forever, when her mothers Viking kin show up to to seek revenge and take what they thought was due to them. It's up to Elle to save her brother and herself and make it to the neighboring MacDougall Clan where she has been assured she will given refugee and assistance.
Beiste MacDougall has just lost his father and became laird of his clan when Elle shows up at his door bearing his family claymore saying that he needs to protect her and her brother. He's unsure why she has his family's claymore but the lass gives him more lip than answers. Beiste blames her for his fathers death and locks her in a chamber until he can sort all of the unknown out. Little know to Beiste there is more going on in the works than he realizes, and although he believes himself with a curse that takes away everyone he has ever loved, he can't help but fall for the fiery, strong willed neighbor.
Again, another cute easy read by this author.

I was actually introduced to this story in the novella of Once Upon a Haunted Castle anthology. I liked it then, and love it now!
I lean toward longer novels, so the longer the better. Although this one isn’t terribly long, it does flesh-out the characters much more, giving them a well-developed personality, and engages more snuggly than the novella. I fell upon the same quote I particularly liked in the novella and will share it here.
“Ye see, life is really only filled with the appearances of choice. The rest is simply our response."
From the first page the author has my heart racing. We know they are coming and Lady Amma Cam’beal, Elle’s mother, a warrior of Viking heritage, is scared. She knows she’s doomed and needs to save her children. Elle and her brother, Erik, age ten, don’t hide, for these monster Vikings would seek them out. Nay, they run and run as far as little Erik can.
So much happens in this scene—it’s terrifying and very well written. We learn the sword above the hearth is very important and lest it fall in the Vikings’s hands, Elle takes it. Elle’s da tells her the MacDougall clan will protect them and the sword is proof.
So I’m in--hook, line and sinker. The read was almost done in a single sitting, because I couldn’t put it down.
From terror, to only more terror. Elle has to leave her brother at a crofter she knows and trusts. Arriving at Dunstaffnage Castle, home of the MacDougall clan did not relieve Elle’s pain and heartache. Laird Beiste MacDougall is in a bad temper, sorrow wenches his gut – his da is dead, cut down, just that morning. Is it coincidence when Elle appears? Highly suspicious timing. Who is she and why does she ask for protection? He prefers to protect his clan against her and locks her in a chamber. Woe to the vanquished!
Eliza Knight keeps the tension building, coiling ever tighter throughout the story until they come! Yes, they are coming for her! It is simply riveting and quite the thriller! Can Elle trust Beist to honor his fathers promise of protection?
Beiste comes to terms with his da’s demise, he is the new laird and must protect his clan and those he is sworn to protect. Thank God for Elle and Erik! He is quite the passionate, safe harbor for Elle, and I simply fell in love with who he is.
I can’t tell you how excited I am about the rest of this series. It will take you to a world pockmarked with vengeance, and in the end, rendered safe through honor, love and determination.

It almost pains me to only leave 2 stars for an Eliza Knight book. I normally really enjoy her writing. This one was definitely disappointing to me, and I had to force myself to finish it. I found it boring and the heroine was ridiculous. It felt really rushed or thrown together - nothing like other books I've read by this author.

They could have just solve everything if she tells the truth. The heroine is a disappointment. Believing and thinking about everything for her sake. The laird should have just dumped her

Here’s a note to myself, folks. I finally got around to reading this book nearly three years after it was released. If I’m not mistaken, the original version was a much shorter novella published with some other similar reads, and this version has been stretched to a whopping 244 pages. Yeah, still not overly lengthy, IMHO.
As much as I’m a huge fan of this author, it pains me to have to admit there were some things that kept this book from really wowing me over, which is a shame since I liked how sweet, caring, and repentant the hero became after their rough start the first night they met. The hero hits himself over the head for how rude he was to her. He verra quickly found his manners, folks. Unfortunately, I just didn’t find the whole thing overly original like I’m used to from this writer.
Here’s some examples: “Beiste” as this huge, hunk of mountain of muscle hero’s name just seemed rather kiddish and foolish. The twist at the end regarding someone’s parents was blurted out like it was meant to explain everything and the rushed “all’s well that now ends well” ending felt thrown in to quickly wrap this up.
The hero himself I mentally pictured as The Witcher type character. Because, hey, that works for me and any excuse there, am I right? Yeah, I see you nodding your head, too. Maybe it was because I saw a picture of him today geared up like a warrior in that upcoming new season. My, oh, my! Mmm...Mmm...Mmmh...Lol So I let myself some loose reign here and pictured the heroine being the sweet, soft spot for that battered and bruised warrior weary soul to rest and move on to a HEA.
Btw, the job she was told the Fae had picked her for, if she so chose to accept that mission, was an “OK, if you say so..I guess” kind of thing. It felt random and rather nonsensical to include.
Avid romance safe fans may note the same contradiction I sensed regarding his deceased wife. A couple of times it is referenced he deeply loved her and misses her, can’t even move on, yet I distinctly remember at one point he thought of that former wife in a negative light because she was cold towards him. That was a misstep in consistency. Since I prefer he love this heroine more, it was like a lifeline I choose to grab and save myself from thinking this lass would ever play second fiddle to someone else. That's just how I roll, folks.
So overall, it was just okay...with some good points, too. I’m glad I can notch my historical romance belt one more notch and take this book off my to read list. No doubt I’ll be back for more though from this author and series. She is one of my top ten Scottish romance authors, after all.

This newest Eliza Knight book has a little bit for everyone. A dashing hero of course, a strong heroin obviously, battle, intrigue, honor, fielty, oaths....Oh and did I mention paranormal. A little paranormal, but it incredibly adds to the story. If you have ever had the feeling someone was giving you a sign from beyond, or guiding you on a course from beyond, you will absolutely love this story. The torment in this story is real, and most people can relate to losing loved ones, feeling like lifes events are somehow your fault, or feeling like you are not worthy of happiness.
This story is a quick read and I actually read it in a day. The story is not so quick that you feel rushed or that things are missing. Its the type of story that grips you and reads so smoothly that you keep going as if binge watching your favorite tv series, you just have to know what happens next.
I am a hopeless romantic and am a true sucker for a historical romance. One of the reasons I recommend this book is because I think there is something in this story for everyone. Its not overly sappy, not overly gory or gruff. Its got just that sprinkle of everything to make it a fantastic story. We could all use a little of Elle Cam'beal's strength and a bit of the Beiste MacDougall charm.
A must read for all Eliza Knights fans!!

Elle runs. She runs from a vicious enemy in an attempt to save clan and family. She runs right to clan McDougal and their Laird Beiste McDougal. Beiste is a new clan leader, recently elevated to Laird due to tragedy, and a man who is accustomed to having his way. Elle is a young beautiful woman, who doesn't take orders blindly or without question. So the question is- who will blink first?
I really enjoyed this story of two strong willed people in a world where they had to decide if they were going to work together as allies against a common enemy or battle each other to have their own way.
The plot was interesting, with a truly evil antagonist at their heels. The two main characters provided most of this story, although a younger brother, and an unexpected visitor of sorts provided entertainment as well.
This book is a stand alone, although part of a series, and this reader is going to read more of this series next! I highly recommend this book for an exciting ride with a touch of humor, and romance filled with longing- the best kind.

I enjoyed listening to this book. As far as I know it’s the first book I’ve listened to Lachlan Cameron narrate. He wasn’t great with female voices but that was just a minor thing to me because I loved everything else about his performance. The story was engaging and held my attention from start to finish.
I’m not going to restate the blurb. I will say that there was a lot of action and fighting and some pining in this story. There’s also a helpful ghost and a big surprise near the end of the story involving Elle’s brother. I loved the epilogue that lets us know how Beiste and Elle are doing a little way into the future.

Laird of Shadows is Book 1 of the MacDougal Legacy, a new series written by Eliza Knight. Her characters are always well developed, interesting and authentic and the plot holds your interest. If you enjoy Scottish romances with a touch of mystery and magic, you should enjoy reading this book. It is easy to recommend this book because you won’t want to put down.

Secrets and surprises.
Elle and her brother Erik are forced to escape their home and flee for safety when the Vikings attack and kill their parents. When Elle shows up at his door pleading for help he cannot refuse her. Their story is action packed and has secrets, a ghost, mystery, surprises, and love that can’t be denied.
Elle and her brother Erik are forced to escape their home and flee for safety when the Vikings attack and kill their parents. Beiste and Elle have an intense relationship which held me captivated from the beginning. I love books set in Scottland, especially when clans were very much alive and thriving, before the war with England. This actually dates back to when the Vikings were a problem in Scottland. The couple in this story have a very complicated love story, but it's intriguing and has you sitting on the edge of your seat, desperate to uncover every detail. This is definitely a book I would recommend to everyone.

I absolutely love Eliza’s work and enjoyed the way she wove this story around a Scottish legend. Elle is an extremely strong woman who overcomes family tragedy, and Beiste is a charming laird, haunted by his past. They come together under dire circumstances and must battle not only the Vikings, but also their own feelings. I would recommend this book to all lovers of Highland Romance. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

This story kept me entertained. It has intrigue, mystery and romance. There is clan loyalty issues and instant attraction along with secrets. After the secret is revealed, the story rushes to end. There is an HEA, no cheating, and no cliffhanger. I was just a little disappointed that there was no more depth to them getting to know each other written into the story. It was a good read though.

Entertaining highland romance with a paranormal twist. Enjoyed this novel but didn't find myself very emotionally involved for some reason. I am a fan of Eliza Knight so will continue with the series. I found the cover a bit off putting, I don't know why but the guy reminded me of Sean Penn who I don't find appealing at all!

As always, Eliza did a great job on the plot and characters. I enjoyed the story, except for the ghostly apparition. I'm not much into that kind of thing . I took forward to the rest of the series.

Her books are so filled with vivid details that the reader is so drawn into the story that you become one of the main characters. I had read this as a novella, but this longer story is worth it!

Riveting
