The Haunting of Merci Hospital

Rate this book
Some patients never leave...
No one expects to visit a hospital for a non-life-threatening injury only to never leave again.

Merci Hospital, one of the oldest in the county, has served countless patients for practically decades. However, something is now very odd about the place as some who are admitted report seeing things that are not there and others never get to talk about it.

Catherine Lucene is fairly new at Merci, a highly regarded nurse whose reputation for excellence and compassion in healthcare precedes her. She gradually becomes aware of the inexplicably sinister happenings at the hospital, but the underlying cause of it all evades her. Will Catherine's determination to uncover the truth help preserve the lives of those not yet lost, including her own, or will her curiosity of the "unknown" propel her into a horrifying state-of-being she never knew existed?

This turned into a nice surprise for me. I have enjoyed ghost stories and tales of haunts since I was a child. I can remember being in the backseat with my cousins just as it was getting dark out. My aunts were in the front seat talking about all the haunted places in the holler. It was delightfully scary and goosebumps would pop upon our skin. We would be showing our arms to each other with eyes wide open when all of a sudden my aunts would start screaming and shouting for us to hide in the floor because the haunts were after us. One of the best memories from my childhood. Haha. It is what set the bar for so high for ghost stories. Consequently, I read a lot of “haunting” books but am not always entertained by them. I’m happy to say I was entertained by this one. The author told the story straight with the appropriate amount of details to the setting. There were parts that chilled me. It was a fast paced story. Definitely a good tale for a gloomy afternoon. I read this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.

A Chilling Story with a Surprising Outcome

Just when you think you will never read a disturbing narrative, along comes a story filled with strange happenings, intrigue, and death, where things are not what they appear to be. The protagonist, Catherine Lucene, a newly hired nurse at the distinguished Merci Hospital believes she has the greatest job on earth but when an elderly patient supposedly commits suicide, when baffling deaths occur, and she is approached by a seer, Catherine will face the biggest challenge of her life. This is great storytelling that is well written with many-sided and well-developed characters. The plot is full of deception, cover-ups, and a shocking revelation, with an ending that will shake you to the core.

Well that was terrible. The writing was honestly awful, I felt like I was reading a high schoolers’ essay or something. And the plot? Just….no.

The Haunting of Merci Hospital - a review by Rosemary Kenny

A mysterious old hospital like Merci could almost expect to be haunted, but what effect does that contact with 'the other side' have on the elderly patients, (who form the majority of people treated there) and the staff, like Macie Fields and Catherine Lucene, who've come to realise that some patients - of whatever age - even those there for fairly minor proceedings, die unexpectedly and return from the 'great beyond' to raise the spirit level at Merci another notch or two.
What steps does Catherine take to investigate?
What risks is she exposing herself to?
One such death is that of Don Mather. Unaware he's passed away, he's confused by his wife Jill's obvious distress in the recovery room and terrified as the pre-existing spooks chase him along the empty corridors.

When Catherine is given the chance to save a young girl patient, with information she's given by Mae, the two nurses make a plan to save Priscilla from suffering for her mother's sins.
What do they do in desperation?

A shattering climax to this riveting, supernatural, psychological thriller, The Haunting of Merci Hospital by the incredible Tanya R Taylor, will have you wound up tighter than a clock spring by the time you've got near the last pages.

I do not like books that end with a long preview of the next book in the series. I previously ordered the next book, however, I hate that they include such a long preview of another book. The book should only be about the book currently being read, not another one. It’s a sales tactic that I frown on!

Kind of let down

I liked the story but there was only one scene (if that’s what you call it)that took place that got me amped up for a thriller and I was hoping there would be much more. It was good for a quick read.

The Haunting of Merci Hospital by Tanya R. Taylor

Really fast paced, well written. The author told the story directly without using pages upon pages of describing scenery, or characters. To the point, short and a see bit of scary! An enjoyable quick read.

A good, quick ghost story.

This ghost story by Tanya R. Taylor was well-told and imaginative. I enjoyed the different perspective it gave me as the reader. It can be read in about 2 hours so it is a good choice for those with limited time to read for pleasure.

Spine chilling read

Not many story's give me the chills but this did. A well written short story with the feel of King's Kingdom hospital and poltergeist entwined. Well worth a read, especially in the dark, lol

Interesting book and I did enjoy it but then I don't read a book I'm not enjoying. The story is pretty good but out there a little bit. Give it a try, Tanya Taylor usually does write good books.

Would make a heck of a creepy movie

Unrealistic but frightening just the same. Do not read this story if you know you are facing surgery in the near future.

This is gonna be a simple review for a simple story. Believe me, I’d love to go on and on about the benefits of haunted hospitals and lamenting my lot as the wife of a medical provider who won’t take her up to the haunted floor of the hospital he works at ... but I won’t, cuz y’all have heard it all before. I really liked this book! It was creepy, unique, and even as a ghost story, believable. I liked Nurse Katherine a lot; she seemed to be that perfect nurse who cared and also knew her stuff. I don’t want to give away too much detail, but there were some pretty freaky stuff that gave me goosebumps! My only problem is that I want more detail. This felt a little more like the bare bones of a story vs. a completed work. The haunting happened for a reason, but I need more detail about said reason! Where’s the background of the hospital?? When I’m lucky enough to find a book about a haunted hospital or an asylum or even a boarding school, it needs to be at least 300 pages with a complete history of said institution!!!! How hard is that really??? Ok I know, I’m being unreasonable, so acknowledging that about myself, I really liked this book and I recommend it to anyone looking for a simple horror story. It’ll definitely scratch the itch!
