I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

The conclusion of this series was good. It wrapped everything up nicely. However, even though I liked it, I didn't love it. It was hard to really want to read, even though there was a lot going on, it was still kind of boring for me. It was worth it to finish the duo though.

How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. I had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't like it. I didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other than for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this book's content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

The Curse (The Butterfly Effect #2)
By: Margaret McHeyzer

The Conclusion is here!!! The Questions are answered!

Picking up right where we left off in The Gift, this story is packed full of suspense, action, tears, and happiness.

With Lexi’s ‘curse’ she is perfecting how to use her new founded talent. She is becoming a very powerful person. But at what cost? It seems like no matter which way she turns, people are getting hurt, people are dying, all because of her and her ‘curse’.

Jude is her solid. He grounds her. He makes her feel like she is still the normal young woman. But is that truly who Jude is? Or is Jude using Lexi for her ‘talent’…

Every page turned, you find yourself second guessing who is the good guy/gal and who is the bad guy/gal. The twists and turns have you reading nonstop to figure this story out! But in the end, it’s as clear as can be!!!

After reading The Gift, I was anxious to find out what would happen to Lexi and her special ability. The Curse locks up right where The Gift left off. Lexi is learning to control her ability and is pushing the limits of this gift she thinks may actually be a curse. Despite her best intentions, people around her are getting her and she is facing the weight of that responsibility. She isn't sure who, if anyone she can trust. Jude has become her touchstone, but does he have ulterior motives as well? Does she actually mean something to him, or does he only see her gift and ways to manipulate her for it?

This book had just as much nail biting suspense and action as the first book and it was impossible to put down. Lexi is such a strong kickass character, you can not help loving her. McHeyzer had me questioning everyone and their motives right alongside Lexi. A very satisfying read. I would be happy to read more in this fascinating series.

Such crap... I mean... there aren't words enough to say how much I hate this book.

This is written to make Jude look like a good guy.
The first half of the book was written to justify Jude's kidnapping Alexa, and showing how much worse a cage she could be in. In reality, she wouldn't have needed to be in any kind of cage. Had Jude not kidnapped her, none of this would have happened.

No, I hate this book, and as so many people have said they only got the second to find out what happened, I am going to tell you the "answer" right away so that you don't need to read this piece of crap.
Yeah. That's it. Now you know.

So... how is it any different from Jude?
Jude "loves" her.
How do we know? He SAYS so! So it must be true! I mean... he wouldn't want to have sex with this hot 17 years old otherwise, would he? I mean... all the other guys do, but Jude isn't like the other guys. Because... er... He is GENUINELY concerned! One can SEE it in his EYES! Yeah. Sure. Of course he is. Let's just ignore all the other things he said. And especially all the things he did.

So, at one point the author forgets totally that her "hero" is supposed to be this sadistic criminal who enjoys the power he has over people, who enjoys people being afraid of him. No, she makes them as a normal couple of 17yo girl/25 yo boy. They tease each other, they joke around, they have a relationship with Frank as if Frank was Jude's dad or something like that.
Why? Why the fuck is she treating him as if he was just a guy she's having a crush on? He is no different from Enzo, except that he's young and pretty. He will be Enzo when he's 60. Enzo probably is his grandfather or something.

Also that scene where Lexi teaches Jude some common decency and manners, even when in the first book Margaret made a point of showing how kind and polite Jude was to Frank to show how "good guy" he "really" is.

Just look up checklists on abusive, toxic relationships and "relationship red-flags".

One can wonder if these authors writing heroines falling in love with abusive, dominating, violent, aggressive, jealous bastards get commission from real life psychopaths for grooming stupid girls into thinking this is romantic and sweet and something to swoon over.

We know this because Jude said so... and we know he isn't lying, because? Mafia bosses don't lie? Jude wouldn't lie to this 17yo he wants to use for his own benefit so much so that he kidnapped her and didn't even try to win her over, like - he could be courting her and ask her to help him as her actual girlfriend, seduce her into it slowly, because if she was his girlfriend she would quickly approve his criminal activities. He really didn't need to kidnap her or threaten anyone, he could have dated her quite openly, and won her over in a totally peaceful manner and get her to help him because they love each other. I mean... just imagine "I'm so grateful to you, you saved my life. Could I offer you a dinner to express my gratitude?" and then he asks her for dates, because she's cute, and because he's pretty and kind and rich generous, she falls for him, and they become a couple, and THEN all this crap happens... can you see how different that would be? Especially if he refuses to use her power for his own benefit, because he's genuinely worried about her, but of course she will.
It would be even better if he was a cop, and in the end of the book she would be studying to become an FBI agent, like he is, and she would be using her powers to help him in his work? Can you just imagine how good this book could have been?

Also, what's this crap about her being a weapon? How the heck would you be able to use a person who can see random event happening a couple of hours before it happens as a weapon? Uh, logic, life is too short to be bothered by such negativity.

How do all these people know about her abilities? How many people would have known if Jude didn't kidnap her and tried to use her?

This girl believes everything, except then suddenly she doesn't. And then she does.
Nobody tells her anything, and she's more or less ok with it, until to the end of the book. Sure, she whines about it, but goes along.
I hate it when the author's need to play have things happen to fit the story, throws out all logic, credibility and continuity.

She keeps whining about everything being her fault. That attitude is so f-ing self-centered AND stupid. Yeah, sure, you are a superhero, but the world doesn't revolve around you. A crime boss has enemies. It's not your fault. People try to kill a crime boss. It's not your fault. He's been killing a lot of people during his short life, some of them might have family and friends who try to pay him back in kind. Every thought of that? No... you have been in his life a month, it's ALL BECAUSE OF YOU.

There's so much gratuitous violence.
Excuse me, Margaret, but PEOPLE CAN DIE OF BEING SMACKED AROUND. They can suffer brain damage.
Concussion shouldn't be used as a handy plot device to get your characters out of the way for the time you need. BEING UNCONSCIOUS FOR MORE THAN A MINUTE IS MOST LIKELY SIGN OF SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG GOING ON. You NEED medical attention, and IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST A MONTH TO RECOVER FROM THAT KIND OF INJURIES.

In the beginning of the first book, she was in an emergency surgery due to a ruptured appendix. That is very, very dangerous, and takes a long time to recover from. AT LEAST A MONTH.
THEN we add the very bad car accident to this, where she got a whiplash injury AND a bad concussion - she smacked her head so hard to the window that she lost consciousness. But did she have even a headache when she woke up? Nope. Apparently her brain is made of rubber.
During these two books, which describe the events of about a month, she was being heavily abused several times, had her nose broken (the doctor did something and it was ok. She didn't even need to wear a bandage on it), was smacked unconscious once more... all the bruises went away in a couple of days. Apparently they didn't just give her the ability to see in the future, but also superquick healing ability. She'll probably live forever. Maybe, if Margaret decides to write more books about her, she'll grow wolverine claws.

Uh. It's just so stupid!

The Curse is the second book in the Butterfly Effect series by the ever talented Margaret McHeyzer. It can not be read as a standalone. You must read The Gift first or you will be lost. Don't worry if you haven't read it, once you start it you will not want to stop so it will be a fast read. I am going to make this short. I will not spoil anything!

The Curse starts exactly where the The Gift ended. If you read it, aren't you excited that Margaret didn't make us wait long? I know I was! Anyway...Lexi is still navigating through her ability. Testing her limits. Questioning herself and everyone else around her. To finally figure out if this is a gift or a curse.

I love Lexi. She is unbelievably strong even if she doesn't believe it. She is sassy...she knows this. Everyone knows this. And it's one of the reasons why I think she is a complete badass. As for the rest of the characters. I can't say much but I will say that Margaret knows what she is doing.

Overall...I want more! Please, Margaret. If not, I will forgive you since you gave me this much already. Two books that took me out of my usual genre. Thank you! It was a wonderful and addicting experience.

Quotes:

“I’m not a Marvel character.” I chuckle and roll my eyes.

“Again, Lexi, semantics.” He waves his hand frivolously at me.

“Intimidation doesn’t work on me.”
“God knows I’ve tried.”

This is book 2 of the Butterfly Effect Series but it is the first one that I have read. Even though I did not have the opportunity of the back story from book one I still totally enjoy every page of this gripping story. It is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone in my opinion but many other will disagree with my view. I have not read Margaret McHeyzer before and found her story telling ability to be wonderful, full of twist and turns that will have you guessing what will happen next. This very gripping suspense book with a very strong willed female character that fights for the ones she loves at all cost, even if she must sacrifice herself along the way. While searching for the answers for the gift she never asked for that soon turns into a curse she longs so to lose. I soon become a weapon that others one to use and her life is no longer in her control. This book gives you the conclusion to this series.
I received a free copy of the book and have voluntarily written an honest review.

The Curse by Margaret McHeyzer is a story that pulls you into the depths of agony and climbs up by a spark with supernatural elements in a criminal world.

The Curse starts right where book one left us. It throws you into a sense of discomfort, anxiety, and fear. You feel Alexa realizes having these gifted abilities make her a target and tool for people to use. The author is able to make you feel the despair, along with devastating consequence leading to the fall. It pulls you into the agony and angry at this unfair cruel chaotic world our main character is thrown in to. Despite all this there is still a spark and you see it grow stronger as Alexa grows more powerful and strong minded. Although unclear about his full intentions Jude seems to care about Alexa enough to be her protector and support.
This story has agony, action, suspense with an adapting survival and will to make it through also add some supernatural goodness and you have a story that knocks it out of the park.

After the ending of book 1, I could not wait to get my hands on book 2. And it did not disappoint.
Margaret has done it again, I did not think she could top the first book in this series but she did. From start to finish, I was hooked half the book I was holding my breath sitting on the edge of my seat wondering how it was all going to end.
I really did not know what was going to happen. It was fast paced and a lot happens. However, it will have you turning the pages.
As we know Alexa has a gift we don’t know how she got it all we know is she woke up in Hospital after having surgery with it well in this book we find out.. I was even surprised a few times with things that happened.
I really felt for poor Alexa she just wanted to get away from everyone because she felt they were all in danger of being around her.
This book is addictive and just full of surprises. In addition, twists and turns I did not see coming and I did not expect to happen... the story is filled with passion, emotion, love.
I have loved these two books and I have really enjoyed Alexa story yes different from what Margaret normally writes but so very good and so well written.

I would really love to see this book and it's predecessor made into a movie. I love Alexa and Jude.

The things Alexa goes through makes her wiser than her 17 years. She's sassy, strong, and stubborn. Thankfully, she also hasa great head on her shoulders.

I didn't want to put this book down. I was up really late reading and got in trouble with the hubs.

I know this is a short review, but there is so much going on I don't want to give anything away. So, grab a copy and find out why I love it and if Alexa will have her happily ever after.

The exciting conclusion of the Butterfly Series, exceeded my expectations!
However, you best read The Gift first in order to understand follow and enjoy the The Curse.
That said, this twisted emotional roller coaster begins right where The Gift ends. Suspenseful, thoughtful story of good versus evil.
Questions are answered, but then we are left with the big question.
Who is Jude?
What are his real intentions with Lexi?
You'll have to read it and find out.

Alexa shows true grit. She's trying hard to not let this gift/curse control her. She's going to control it. And that's what Jude sees in her. He's become very protective of her. He's not a good person but there is something there and she learns she can depend on him. Even though she's an annoying 17yr old. I see what Jude sees, because any other person would have given up.The ending is a twist but other than that I liked this book.

I don’t even know where to start when it comes to writing this review. I’m in complete shock and awe about how Lexi’s story concluded. I’ve come to the conclusion that the author is a masochist, the amount of pain and anguish she puts Lexi through is staggering. Lexi’s abilities are still being abused in this book, especially after discovering that they are growing; only the man using her this time isn’t quite as nice as Jude is.

One of the points I admire about Margaret McHeyzer is her ability to make a lifelike villain. Enzo commits unspeakable atrocities in his efforts to break Lexi, and yet Lexi finds her inner strength and keeps on fighting even whilst bloody and beaten. Jude is still a very big part of the story that is The Butterfly Effect. He continues to straddle the fence between black and white. Only in The Curse he dances more in the shades of grey. He’ll do anything to keep Lexi safe. Say anything to help her believe in herself and her abilities.

“You have something no one else on this planet has and your power all lies with you. You’ve been thrust into a corrupt world, and you’re learning how to live within it without compromising who you are, and without it consuming you. So, to answer you, yes you may cry, you may even crumble, but you’ll never let it define the person you truly are.”

“But he doesn’t sound convinced. He has so much confidence in me. Pity, I don’t”

Through most of this book, except when you’re reminded, it’s easy to forget that Lexi is just 17 years old. She makes so many adult decisions, never forgetting the big picture, keeping her family safe.

“Probably the most powerful person you’ll ever meet. I’m the queen, the kind, the rook and the bishop all rolled into one. No one stands a chance against me.”

Lexi grows as a person and becomes someone that she can be proud of. Someone who is willing to fight for what is right even when that means taking the road least travelled. The ending to The Curse was one I never saw coming and I have to say I completely agreed with how the author took this book. Even if I believe she could have prevented throwing the kitchen sink at poor Lexi.

OMG what a conclusion!! It is super hard to review this book without giving anything away. However, I will say that all the things that I was on the fence about became clearer. The main thing about this story that I enjoyed was that it was an urban fantasy, only a hint of romance (despite my LOVE of romance), and it was something different from what I usually read. There was an action element that I really enjoyed.

After really loving the first book; The Gift, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one to conclude the story. Like the first book this is a page tuner and is so addictive because you desperately need to know what is going to happen.
The writing and the story itself is wonderful and you are drawn to the characters live's, their on going problems and I was desperate for answers and we certainly got them as we went along.

Alexa is still dealing with the fact that her life changed dramatically after her appendix operation and her whole world has been turned upside down. Something strange and life changing has taken place inside her body and Alexa is struggling to come to terms with it. When Jude makes it his mission to protect her but also find out just what is going on and who is involved in all of this we get taken on a journey of discovery and anticipation and some shocks along the way that will make your toes curl.

Nail biting, suspenseful, twisted, corrupt and mind blowingly good, Ms McHeyzer will one minute have you thinking you have sussed this all out, only for the next to be your holding your breathe as you are taken on a completely different road to another clue, more questions and more answers given - but are these the ones Jude and Alexa want to hear, only time will give them their answers.

Both of these books are not to be missed and are fantastic reads and so enjoyable, it was a pleasure to experience them both and Ms McHeyzer's exceptional talent as an author.

I nearly passed up the opportunity to read this duet of books because my head reads urban fantasy and says no, don't go there. But I have ignored my head in the past and found some amazing books and new authors along the way. It was Margaret McHeyzer's name that swayed me into taking a chance here as she has never produced a book I haven't enjoyed. I'm glad now that I took that chance as this has been an amazing ride packed into two glorious books.

Alexa is back, with this book picking up where the previous one left off, and she is starting to realise that her 'gift' is more of a curse. She realises that she will never be safe as long as she is alive and the bad guys know about her talent. Alexa is an incredibly strong and tenacious young lady, who stands strong in the face of pure evil and the violence that comes with it. I was constantly amazed by her courage and stubbornness throughout. Whilst Jude is determined to protect and ensure her safety, he is not squeaky clean himself. However, Alexa brings out his softer side and this very often surprises him and shows in his actions towards her.

All in all this was a great series. The twists and turns kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat wondering what the outcome would be for Alexa as well as for Jude. I loved these characters and loved how they were individually and together. I would definitely take a risk on this series you will not be disappointed.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It is absolutely amazing. It will grab you, turn you inside out, gut you and have you swooning. It will also give you all of the answers you were asking from reading the first book, The Gift. The story line is extremely intriguing and addictive as you will not put it down until you finish. There is no stop and go action in this book, it is full throttle all the way through to the wonderful end.

The characters are well written and extremely complex as Jude is still trying to protect Alexa, but she has, once again, been kidnapped...you might even say she was double kidnapped, considering the first kidnappers loose her to the second kidnappers! Again someone wants to use her, but they do not treat her nearly as well as Jude has, AND they have someone she's close to. Things are looking really bleak for Alexa and she is having thoughts that maybe death would be a good thing.

I do not want to go into any more detail than this regarding this story, you just need to read it for yourself. I swear you will love these books as much as I have and I HIGHLY recommend them!!

They way book one (THE GIFT) ended had me screaming at the story to "come back!" I couldn't wait to get my hands on the second, and final, part of this duet (THE CURSE). I was not disappointed, in fact, I loved it even more. I was in a constant state of suspense, and was not able to see anything coming!! (You will have to read the books to understand why this line is so funny). I think Jude might be one of my favorite characters, like ever. He was swoony, and sweet, protective, and absolutely criminal. He was a loveable villain, but he wasn't THE villain to the story. Alexa was your typical stubborn teenage girl, but I loved her snark! I think everyone should have this story in their lives. It is truly Fantastic! Despite the fantasy aspects, I found this story to be bother believable and relatable. I wasn't read for this book to end! I want more Jude, Alexa, and crew! I want more! I recommend this story highly to everybody. Buy this book! Read this book!

The Curse is the second book in the Butterfly Effect series. It starts right where The Gift left off. I was so excited to read this book to find out what happens and to get the answers to all the questions The Gift left in my head.

The Curse is full of suspense, drama, action and a little bit of lighter moments too. Lexi is finally learning how to use her gift. This is making her a powerful weapon and wanted by many. She feels she is responsible for so many deaths because of her girt. So is this really a gift or a curse?

And then there's Jude, her original kidnapper. They have formed a strong bond and he seems to ground her. She feels like a normal teenager when he's around and she's able to forget about her situation in his presence. But it's always a thought that he could just be using her for her gift.

This book kept my interest from the beginning to the end. It's full of twists and turns that kept me guessing who was really the bad guy until the very end. I highly recommend The Butterfly Effect books. The writing is brilliant and the story is unique!

*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***

This review is going to be short and sweet, for one thing, I'm literally holding a baby! And I read The Curse when I was at the maternity hospital.

Book 1 took a while to pull me in but Book 2 had me glued to the pages from the start.

This is an Urban Fantasy that combines Underworld Criminals and an unknown entity experimenting on Teenagers. Which means there lots of dark moments.

The second book definitely was my favourite out the two, And Jude although he isn't a good guy he at least tries to look after Lexi.

I did enjoy the story but beware it's not sunshine and roses - although if you have read Margaret's books before you will know this already.

Its gritty and has twists and turns, but it concludes nicely with a HEA - which I was glad for.

I am so glad that we did not have to wait long for book 2 in this series. The Curse picks up right where The Gift left off. I love the idea that someone can change the course of the future but there will be consequences.

Alexa is so strong after her life is torn apart. I really liked her as a character. She is smart and loyal to the people around her. But the thing I liked most about her is that she never gives up.

I wanted to hate Jude in the beginning of The Gift but quickly came to love him in The Curse. The only thing that wish was that we could have found out more about his past and the reason he is the way he is.

The Curse was fast paced and always had something going on. It had some great twists in it, one I didn’t expect. I can’t go into any details without giving spoilers away but I will say that I really got into this series.

Epic conclusion to The Butterfly Effect! The Gift left me hanging to read what the hell was happening to Alexa in The Gift. So intriguing, suspenseful, heartbreaking and amazingly written story. Wow! This is one of those books that you wish you could read for the first time again and again! Loved this book!

This was a great "imagine if I was given this power" book! What a great ending to this story. Alexa had it quite rough through out this story and had stayed strong considering everything that happened to her and Dallas (her BFF), her parents and to anyone who was connected to her. Jude at first seemed like the bad guy, for he did kidnap her, but he changes through both books (The Gift and The Curse). Overall, this was a great escape story about a late teen girl who woke up in hospital after surgery and realised that something wasn't right about her due to someone planting an experimental drug inside her. This changed Alexa's life and we follow her into her journey of discovery and living with her Curse/Gift! I say Gift!

Bravo bravo!

Wow another great book. As I said before, urban fantasy has never been my go to genre but I loved your books. I just wish Alexa's parents were still alive. I hope you have more to write with this series. I would love to see Alexa and Jude carry their relationship forward. I loved how she turned her curse around to where she can live life better. Thanks again for an amazing read!

Alexa has a gift, but with everything she is capable of, can she be ready for what will happen with her future?

This book has the perfect structure for a great movie. It has twists and turns, action and mystery.
Who did it?
How did it get there?
Who can you trust?
How will Alexa figure out if her gift is a talent, a blessing or a curse?

**This is NOT a standalone**
You will need to read The Gift before you jump in.

From the moment I started this book I was unable to put it down. This book picks up where the first one left off, it offers so many twists and turns you're unable to put it down! I loved every second of it!
