I requested this ARC because a friend of mine posted about her success with a variation of the keto diet, and I wanted to know more about what it was.

Basically the idea behind a keto diet is that your daily intake of food is high-fat, medium-protein, and ultra-low carb, which forces your body into ketosis: (according to Wikipedia) “a metabolic state in which some of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy.” So instead of getting most of your energy from carbs first, your body converts over into burning fats first.

Dr. Colbert uses his history as a medical doctor, specializing in patients with cancer, to explain why he started the Keto Zone Diet (based on feedback from other medical professionals) and how based on the results he saw, he expanded his ideas about nutrition to patients with other maladies.

QUOTE: Lowering or eliminating sugar intake had a direct effect on the cancer. The normal high-carb, low-fat intake of most people was simply feeding the cancers. That much I already knew.

According to him, the biggest problem with the Keto Zone Diet is how restrictive it is. It’s a hard-sell to get people to give up their beloved carbs (especially with sugar) and stick with it long-term. But he believes that the results are worth it:

QUOTE: On a somber note, if you have a family history of cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, the Keto Zone will usually help.

Is Parkinson’s Diseases, autoimmune disease, arthritis, dementia, or Alzheimer’s Disease in the family? You may be able to slam the door shut with the Keto Zone diet.

For me, it was a big “ah ha” moment when I realized that not only did the Keto Zone diet offer a way to burn off stubborn fat, it also was the best form of protection from diseases.

The Keto Zone diet provides you with the best brain food possible, most inflammatory triggers are turned off, and fat is burned off at a heightened pace. (I am thinking of possible drawbacks to this, but have not found any.)

Clearly, this is a win-win scenario

Honestly, I’m skeptical. Whenever anyone claims one thing will cure everything, I pause. Even if the source is a medical professional. Even one with years of experience working with patients and seeing the results firsthand.

But I’m still curious.

I like that Colbert talks about the recent paradigm shift where more medical experts are saying that eggs are healthy again, and eating healthy fats is important, and how dietary recommendations are constantly changing. And when he was in medical school his prof told the class that “in about ten years half of what we are being taught would be outdated, old and pretty much of no value. The problem is we don’t know which half that is.”

So, by extension, maybe there’s something to The Keto Zone Diet. Maybe some of this will be proved more universally in the next ten years. Colbert spends a good sixty pages of the book discussing exactly how the diet works medically – how it affects LDL and HDL cholesterol, how carbs and starches interact with the body, the facts regarding fats etc.  And there’s a lengthy section full of references for all his claims as well.

Perhaps half or more of this will all be proven wrong in the next decade. How do you know what’s science and what’s a fad?

But there is something appealing to the idea of training your body to burn fats, and to cut back on unhealthy sugars and grains.

So for those who are interested in the ideas behind ketogenic diets, this book is a good place to start. Colbert explains exactly what’s involved, what side effects you might see while your body is switching from being a carb-burning machine to processing fats, and there’s a lot of information about meal planning and what to buy. He also provides a lot of testimony from patients who have had their lives turned around because of this diet. (Of course, your mileage may vary regarding how much you believe there).

I think if I were to try a ketogenic diet, I would make use of that last section, especially the shopping lists, because making the switch would be a huge adjustment. I’ve already started looking closer at what I’m eating and carbs are in everything.  I’d also make use of the trouble-shooting section, to answer questions I might have as I go, and to see if I am in ketosis or not.

If you’re willing to take Colbert’s fantastic and oft-repeated claims about what the Keto Diet Zone will cure, this book is a good place to start. But if you do have medical issues, it wouldn’t hurt to keep the medical disclaimer at the beginning in mind, and to talk to your personal doctor before starting.

I plan to read a bit more before I decide.

Excellent book by a good Functional doctor, MD. Like many he had to have his own sickness and use food to cure it to find out about the power of what you eat on your body. He goes through his life story and how he came to use diet to help his patients get well. He then explains special ways to eat for each condition. I loved the one on Dementia and Alzheimer's diseases, because he immediately takes them off of Statins! In some cases this is all that was needed, and then gives them suggestions on the foods to eat and what to not eat. One of ht pioneers in the field of Functional Medicine.

ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have read more diet books then I should probably admit. I have heard a lot about the Keto diet and read quite a bit about it online. However this book gives real information about how this diet works and the steps one should take to be successful on this diet.

I am anxious to give this a try however I am a little nervous about giving up sugar (I am a bit addicted) but it is worth the try.

I have heard pros and cons about ithe Keto Diet. Here is one: https://www.health.com/weight-loss/ke...
This book is mostly bits of people's stories of success, so I have been mostly skimming through it. Dr. Colbert has a section that says the diet may be helpful for most health concerns, dangerous for diabetics, and nothing saying it is for sure helpful. I think I may incorporate some of the ideas, at least try to cut back on sugars. I did not realize that MSG is disguised in products via other names--which Colbert mentions in the book on page 34. He says trans fats are disguised as high stearate or stearic rich or vegetable oil on labels.
Colbert says that inflammation instead of high cholesterol is what causes health problems, so cutting back on sugar and other things that cause oxidization in your body helps. Also, testing --NMR lipoprofile test-- to check for the size of LDL particles (small is what causes problems) in blood tests is needed. Insurance does not cover those tests, usually.
I may try the menus, recipes, etc to see if they are helpful.

Dr. Colbert's book on the ketogenic diet is a good introductory book for people exploring the idea of a ketogenic lifestyle. The book is divided into sections covering the impact of carbohydrates on our bodies, the benefits of a ketogenic diet, implementing ketogenic changes and recipes. Dr. Colbert does not talk over your head with unnecessary medical jargon. The book is written for the general public to understand the medical reasons behind a low carbohydrate, high fat diet. While reading the book I felt like I was sitting in his office, talking with him in a one on one consultation.

Explains more about the what and why of the keto diet better than anything I read from other sources in a very easy to read simple layman's terms. Problem - he offers recipes with no nutritional information. I need more menu planning instruction.
