The Century of the Child

Ellen Key's (1849–1926) two-volume work Barnets århundrade (The Century of the Child) was published on New Year's Eve 1900. Key believed that the status of children in Western society would undergo a dramatic change in the century to come. Education and upbringing, she believed, would become the focal point of both family life and society.

The Century of the Child became an international bestseller and went on to influence 20th century child pedagogy. The book not only discusses upbringing and education; it also deals with family structure, gender roles, child labor, and class. Key called for the protection of mothers and children and promoted a natural approach of childrearing, along with the belief that children should be treated as individuals. She stood up for the freedom of expression and with her original new ethics model she intended to improve the child’s well-being and the education system.

About the author

Ellen Karolina Sofia Key (Swedish pronunciation: [kej]) was a Swedish difference feminist writer on many subjects in the fields of family life, ethics and education and was an important figure in the Modern Breakthrough movement. She was an early advocate of a child-centered approach to education and parenting, and was also a suffragist.

She is best known for her book on education, Barnets århundrade (1900), which was translated in English in 1909 as The Century of the Child.

Bardzo interesujący esej, który będę polecała każdemu zainteresowanemu kwestią feministyczną, edukacją oraz wychowaniu dzieci. Jest to tekst powstały w 1900r., niektóre przedstawione przez autorkę idee mogą wiec wydać się przestarzałe lub nieodpowiadające współczesnym realiom, inne natomiast zadziwią swoją aktualnością oraz tym, jak mało zmieniły te 124 lata, dwie wojny i przemiany społeczne. Powiedziałabym, że właśnie ten kontekst historyczny jest największą wartością tekstu, skłaniającą do przemyśleń i spojrzenia na w.w. kwestie z odmiennej perspektywy.

Äntligen klar! Det är inte skönlitteratur, vilket tog mig ett tag att komma över. Men med tanke på att den är 120 år gammal imponeras jag av hur mycket som är aktuellt än idag. Och över hur mycket vi har kvar att göra. Men också faktiskt, hur mycket som gjorts. Tack Ellen m.fl. för förbjuden barnaga, sociala skyddsnätet, förbud mot barnarbete, gratis skolgång....

Det är häpnadsväckande att tänka att den här boken har varit häpnadsväckande för en läsare. Jag tänker att hon hade varit stolt om Ellen fick se hur skolan och inställningen till barns utveckling är idag, samtidigt som det belyser problematiken som råder idag. Jag tror att hon hade kritiserat stora klasser, betyg i tidig ålder och vinster vid privatskolor
