Stolen Magic #3

Hidden By Faerie

Rate this book
Sophie Morrigan has been assigned a case way above her pay grade.

Dangerous magical objects are a dime a dozen, but the Scepter of Sight is the fae equivalent of a nuclear weapon. When Sophie is dispatched to the Museum of Fae Culture and History, all she wants to do is go home and sleep until a more respectable hour.

Since that isn’t an option, she takes comfort in the fact that her sexy dragon boyfriend is assigned to the job alongside her. If the scepter weren’t the property of Owen’s parents, and the lives of everyone in Volarus weren’t at stake, it could almost be enjoyable.

Sophie will have to work her highest profile case yet while learning to balance her career and a burgeoning romance. Can she overcome witches, werewolves, and elves to keep Faerie from being exposed to the human world? Or will the magic flying her way leave both her love life and the fae city in a pile of burning rubble?

The Stolen Magic series features a gutsy, kick-butt heroine, a broody and dangerous hero, and a ton of magical mayhem.

I still like Sophie - even tho Owen has softened her slightly she is remains her usual abrupt, socially awkward self. This one was Owen and Sophie working together - so yay. In terms of story/mystery it was a lot of running around with very little in the way of resolution which was kind of unsatisfying. As was Sophie's decision to take some time to think about things (ie pushing Owen away).

In the third book of the series, Sophie is requested on a high profile case because of Owen, and she isn't sure what to think about it. She knows she has to do what she can to solve the case, but something feels wrong, and having to meet Owen's parents makes things even more complicated.

This book was really good. I loved Sophie and Owen, and how they were taking it slow. This case was a bit of a mess though. I hated how it seemed to skip over things and then jump back to them, and how it ended, but other than that this was a great addition to the series, and really made me wish for more. Now, I can't wait to read the next one.

W.B. McKay doesn't disappoint. Once you start reading, you can't stop. Clear your schedule and get comfortable. Each book in the series is better than the last. Can't wait to read what happens next with everyone in Stolen Magic!

4.5 Stars! The weird daughter of Morrigan is back and this time, she may just be in over her head.

Summary:
After seven years, Sophie Morrigan is an adept FAB agent. Finding dangerous magical objects is her niche, but her current assignment may just be over her head. Sophie is called to the Museum of Fae Culture and History to investigate the theft of a scepter. Despite looking like an innocuous, yet beautifully expensive gold scepter, it is so much more. The Scepter of Sight activated, could mean revealing all of Faerie and the entire magical community to humans as well as the risks and danger their reaction would entail. With no trail, magical or otherwise, Sophie must be in her element. Luckily, she has Owen at her side, both on the case and romantically. Unluckily, she learns the reason for his involvement is that the scepter belongs to his parents. Eek! Rubbing elbows with Fae political elite is not Sophie’s idea of a good time, but her and every other Fae’s relatively peaceful existence is at stake. Working her highest profile case, yet, Sophie will have to overcome witches (again), werewolves, and elves for the greater good. Can she balance her career, burgeoning romance, and her goal to become more sociable and still find the scepter before all hell breaks loose? If Faerie is exposed, will it be her fault? Sophie doesn’t have all the answers, but she does know she won’t stop until she finds the ultimate baddie and gives him a dose of his own medicine.

There’s just something about the writing and characters in these books that has a hold on me. I’ve loved Sophie from the beginning. Her snarky personality and social ineptitude have made me an instant fan. Her skill with a sword and intelligent, investigative mind were just a bonus. Each book has seen a marked growth from Sophie. She was closed off, used rudeness to keep others from getting close, and spent most of her time alone. Now, in her third adventure, she is by no means all sunshine, light and togetherness, but she is trying. I love seeing her eyes open to more than just her small bubble. She’s already learned so much about herself; who she is, who she wants to be, and how she fits in with the magical world around her. It’s not a smooth education, but it’s fun and interesting. She’s hard on herself, not seeing the positives in her actions until others point them out, but I think that’s what sets her apart from both her mother and other Fae. I adore supporting cast, but I don’t feel we saw much of them, except Owen. Phoebe is a hilarious prankster, but you can see how she truly feels about Sophie from their interactions. Ava is still a bit of a mystery, and I’d really like to know more about her, including the history between her and Owen. And Owen. His and Sophie’s romantic relationship is slow-going but very sweet. I loved their banter in this book. It was funny, flowed well, and abundant. I hope they continue to progress as the series goes on. We also get to meet Owen’s parents (fun times) and see a bit of how he grew up. Seeing who Owen really is, his parents surprised me and I can honestly say I hope they are very minor characters. 😊 Somehow, I doubt I’m that lucky, though. Overall, this was an engaging read. Sophie’s natural inquisitiveness and detailed thought processes provide a lot of entertainment. She’s chasing leads for most of the book, but there was still action and a mystery that will now carry over to book four. The magical community has been rocked with the events of Hidden by Faerie, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out in the next book. ♡

Sophie Morrigan's mother is THE Morrigan, renowned for her battle prowess and insatiable appetite for violence. Most fear her, some worship her, and her daughters wonder why she keeps having and abandoning children. Sophie is raised by one of her sisters, Belinda, in the insular Banshee community comprised entirely of Morrigan daughters. In many ways, she is more like her fabled mother and has unique talents and attributes that make her feel like an outsider. When Sophie reaches adulthood, she decides to move away and work for the Faerie Artifacts Bureau (FAB) in the Magical Object Division (MOD) as a field agent hunting down and retrieving dangerous magical items before they create too much havoc in the Faerie or human realms.

Sophie's latest mission is to retrieve a stolen scepter that allows humans to see past glamour. Exposing the paranormal world would irrevocably merge two societies and likely result in chaos and widespread panic. To expose or not to expose is an ongoing political debate among the Faerie elite.

What's weird about this case, is that Sophie NEVER gets high profile retrieval jobs...and they don't get more high profile than this one. Turns out, the scepter was stolen from Owen's parents. His mother is the unspoken leader of the Faerie council. Both are masterful (and heartless) politicians with high ambitions for their son and little regard for their daughter, Ava (and her embarrassing type of magic).

This book was interesting in that we get to know more about how Owen and Ava were raised...and Sophie gets to meet her boyfriend's family for the first time (a delightful experience for everyone). She's never rubbed shoulders with Fae elite, and by the time she's done with this case, never want to again.

Sophie spends most of the book chasing leads, but very little happens. A necessary transition to book 4, but not as satisfying as the first two.

I love strong female characters, fairies, mystery and a good action scene. So, needless to say, I loved this book! It will keep your attention from the start and you won't want to put it down till the end. The end only leaves you wanting more. A definite good read!

Excellent

Again enjoyed every word. The concept of magic in this series is different then other magic series that I've read. But the difference makes it just different not better or worse. I look forward to reading Immeresed in Faerie.

Extremely enjoyable.

Loving Agent Morrigan lol or Sophie if she lets you in.

Ah meeting the *parents* in this case probably not the best way.

Stolen sceptre, returned sceptre, stolen then returned again.

A puzzle to whom and why.

A relationship, or not??

👍👍👍

Good

Pretty good book. I’m sad about Sophie and Owen, and the case was pretty nutty. On to book 4 now!

mixed feelings about this one

I liked it but I didn't. I liked the progression of the series and the direction it's heading. But I dunno. Something kept me from loving it.

I liked the first two books better

I liked the first two books better. This book was hard to really sink into and kids don't know why. It just seemed off compared to the first two books. I liked the story line, but it seemed choppy during parts that were action and the seemed to end hurriedly. Usually when I read I have a moving picture in my head, yet this time it was harder to picture and didn't flow easily.

Now, the book did have a good storyline and opened up a lot of questions for the next book which makes me want to read it to see what happens and how those questions are answered. So, I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.
