Yes, Professor

Rate this book
Twenty-two-year-old Avery Stewart has a crush on his neighbour. Always attracted to older men, Avery is tantalised by Mr Redding's professorial looks and obvious obsession with perfection.

When he finally gets the courage to speak to Christopher Redding, Avery manages to get invited back that evening on the pretext of bringing a cake for Christopher's birthday. But things don't work out how Avery had planned, and he finds himself sent home with the cake and without any intimacy.

Christopher is everything Avery has ever desired—older, self-assured, dominant, and intelligent. Avery needs someone in his life to take charge—in and out of the bedroom. He wants Christopher to be that man. However, Avery must first convince Christopher to take a chance on him.

Renae Kaye is a lover and hoarder of books who thinks libraries are devilish places because they make you give the books back. She consumed her first adult romance book at the tender age of thirteen and hasn’t stopped since. After years – and thousands of stories! – of not having book characters do what she wants, she decided she would write her own novel and found the characters still didn’t do what she wanted. She believes that the world is too complicated for her, so she loses herself in stories. The only thing that keeps her going are her children who are the delight of her life.

Renae lives in Perth, Western Australia. She is a survivor of being the youngest in a large family and believes that laughter (and a good book) can cure anything. Which is why it's a pity laughter is sometimes scarce on the ground.

The good news: Renae Kaye wrote an honest to god bisexual character.

The bad news: This story tried hard to be funny but failed on most counts.

Neither MC is particularly likable. Avery is 22 but acts like a spoiled, clueless teenager. He's the narrator of the story but not a very reliable one.

Avery's crush, Christopher, is a man who wears three-piece suits and trims his hedges multiple times a week. Avery finds everything about Christopher hot; older men turn him on.

The story manages to be both superficial and convoluted. Christopher's entire clan, including his daughter (who's Avery's age) and ex-wife, become involved in his relationship. His best friend, who's straight and married, asks Avery on a date.

Everyone interferes because Christopher and Avery are idiots who don't know how to talk to each other. At least Avery is only 22; what's Christopher's excuse?

There is nothing original or interesting about the plot. Christopher worries he's too old for Avery. Avery likes Christopher to boss him. Integral scenes (like Avery and Christopher's first date) happen off-page. A random bondage scene is thrown in toward the end.

I suppose you can call the ending a tentative HEA, but the characters are so one-dimensional, I couldn't connect with them, or this story, at all.

I really don't like the Avery character, who seems flighty, immature, and just...I didn't like him. I don't want to keep reading about him.

Maybe I'll pick it up again some other time.

Too stupid and hokey. It wasn't funny. Both Avery and Christopher's characters were so extreme and forced that they came across as weirdos. They weren't likeable. The relationship development was quite shallow. It didn't help that Avery was very insecure and they never talked as a couple. Technically the sex was there on the page but it didn't generate much steam. The HFN was weak. It was a very short book.

Also, political correctness was pushed in the story - age gap, homosexuality, bisexuality, 2016 gay club shooting in Florida, etc.

A better book by this author is Loving Jay. It's on my keeper shelf.

This book was on KU.

Short and cute! This was fun, a nice break from longer books. At first I thought Avery was a little TOO stalker-y and whacked, but it evened out quickly. I liked the May-Dec aspect.

This book got me laughing.
Avery is totally clueless. Smart in some ways, so dumb in others. He's kind of the gay version of Legally Blond. He's happy to be gay. Being gay for him is fabulous and he doesn't hide it. In his own words:
"Why hide the product in the back room where no customer could see it and could only buy it if they knew the right person to ask? False advertising and poor sales technique, in my opinion."
It may be tough for him to make decisions and stick to them, but if there is something that he's very clear about is what he likes in his men. He definitely has a type. He, unapologetically, loves older guys who have their shit together and, if they look like professors, he's all set. His thing for professors is why he watches Indiana Jones over and over again. He's still unsure if he prefers Professor Harrison Ford or Professor Sean Connery. He likes to be told what to do and how to do it in the bedroom and the older professor type is perfect for him.
Enter his new neighbor. Christopher, in his mid-forties, all prim and proper is Avery's wet dream. He's a researcher who also happens to give lectures in another department of Avery's uni.
This is a mostly drama-free story, with great secondary characters. It's short, funny and reads easily.
There is a substantial age gap (23 years) and a decent amount of sexy times (that are also a little kinky and may or may not involve aprons).
Recommend to pass a couple of hours.

Erm...

Renae Kaye wrote one of my favorite m/m books (Safe in his Arms), and I've read and enjoyed many of her other works. Lately, however, it's like someone else is writing them. The voice is different. There's less smarm, the dialogue has improved a bit in terms of believability...but the characters themselves have somehow become worse. Or maybe not worse so much as less. The interactions are disjointed and frustrating, the internal monologues are confusing...there's just an overall lack of cohesion one comes to expect from a romance. If the two main characters aren't in synch with each other, why the hell should I be interested in their story?

The younger MC in this story (I've forgotten his name, unsurprisingly) is almost a complete waste of page space. I can't tell if he even had a personality. He spouted a lot of movie one-liners and some bullshit pseudo-psychology that was somehow supposed to explain away his...lack of personality? Does being aware that you have zero personality mean you have the biggest personality?

What in the hell has Kaye been smoking?

I really enjoyed this one. This was very low angst and drama free. Just a cute story about a college student and his next door neighbor who is a research scientist/professor. Avery is 22 but has a major crush on his 40 something next door neighbor Christopher. The way they kick start their relationship is cute and though Avery comes off a bit stalkerish at first he's really just a guy who has hard time making decisions and finding direction but the only thing he knows he wants right now is Christopher. There is a little back and forth and Avery plays the guessing game a lot when it comes to Christopher but ultimately we get to the point where both men are comfortable laying their wants on the table and declaring their true feelings.
There is some kink here nothing hard core, compared to other books I would say this book is pretty low on steam, but it's cute with a sweet ending. Very enjoyable.

"I came over cold, wishing I'd worn something that was a little "less gay" than my tribute shirt to the victims of the Pulse Orlando shooting."

Less gay? it seem kaye has stooped to another level of offensive.

Avery is 22 going on 15.
He's childish and immature for his age.
Christopher is no less, and he's 45. I'm not sure I can like them :(
The only character I like in this book is Nick, Avery's best friend. He's the one who make sense.
Oh, and Angie (Christopher's daughter) and Michael (Chirstopher's best friend).
To be honest, this time both characters are unlikeable.
Maybe this time, this is not for me.
Sorry.

I'm not a fans of huge age gap story. Sure, 10 years is fine, tho i found it sexy. But over 20 years? Um, nope, it just weird. Some stories are work with me, but this? not really.

I did not like this book.

The premise behind this book had potential: twenty something who wanted to be told what to do with an older man kink. But there was really nothing kinky in this book: no daddy/boy kinks, just light BDSM. The story in and of itself was flat and boring. As it was, it was wholly unengaging.

Told from Avery's POV in 1st person, the narrative was really self absorbed. I didn't care for him at all. The mature MC, Christopher was aloof. I felt no chemistry between them and truly didn't care what happened to them. At all.

Had this book not been part of a challenge I would have DNFed it early on. Thankfully is was short and free on KU. The only engaging part was one sex scene at the 90% mark. Ten percent does not a novel make.

This book seems to have two camps. 1 camp love it and the other don't.
I actually really liked it. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times.
I guess I must like the twinks that Renae writes about. Avery reminded me of Jay and to a lesser extent Shawn.
I amglad I read it. A pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.

Okay, so, this book was so freaking adorable. I literally smiled the whole way through it. It’s totally a romantic comedy! The fact it is releasing around Valentine’s Day can’t be coincidence. Oh all the warm feels!

This is a younger guy and an older guy. Avery is in his early twenties and Christopher is forty-five. Age plays a factor in everything here. Avery has always been attracted to older men and Christopher is having some issues. He’s not ashamed of Avery, no. He feels Avery may tire of him and want to explore. Avery being only one year older than his daughter doesn’t go unnoticed either.

Throughout the entire book the band of secondary characters are hell-bent on making Avery and Christopher communicate! These guys have a heck of an army behind them. And the whole cake thing… LMAO! Oh my word…. Priceless! You’ll see!

There’s steamy sex and the perfect balance at that. It’s funny, light, just gah! I wish I could come up with perfect words but they keep slipping. This book leaves you laughing. I ended it with a happy hoot! I haven’t felt that happy after finishing a book in a really long time.

So if you can’t tell yet I’m highly recommending this book to the people looking for sweet romance, laughter, and the best feelings!!!

What a wonderfully funny story!

You definitely have to set aside any expectation of reality but that's easy to do when you're seeing this through such an amusing character as Avery. Oh, how his brain works is such a delightfully cute, weird thing to experience. I laughed my way through the majority of the story and that's just what I needed.

I must admit that if it hadn't been so funny I probably wouldn't have liked it at all. Considering Christopher is only 5 years younger than me and Avery is younger than my kids I honestly would've been squicked out. But it was all just so cute and funny that I was able to set aside all thoughts of reality and just enjoy the story.

I highly recommend this lighthearted story to anyone who is able to set aside reality and is looking for a laugh.

This was cute, but Avery came across as really young and spoiled. I didn't get what a man like Christoper would see in him. I wish we'd gotten some of Christophers POV, and maybe learned a bit about Avery's family.

I have to admit, what gave it an extra star was the price. Had I spent a lot of money on it, I would have been very disappointed since I do enjoy most of what this author writes.

It's not long enough. I never felt that "the professor" truly understood Avery and his issues.

This was cute, but kind of rushed. It felt underdeveloped and it was really short. Probably could be called a novella.

At first I was like, what the cuss is wrong with these two? They were really weird, but they grew on me. D/s undertones.

I loved this story... and I can so relate to it! Even though I consider myself a strong woman, I have depended on my husband to be my anchor for almost all of my life! We met when we were sixteen and he has been there for me for almost 40 years! I could write a book about how he has loved me for or in spite of the things that others perceive as weird or unusual and I have been blessed by his acceptance. Like Avery, I occasionally feel like I take more from our relationship than I give, but he shows me in a million little ways how I have added to his life and made it better. Lesson learned by both Avery and myself? Being different isn't wrong, just that being unique requires finding the "right" person to appreciate us!

And can I add... Christopher's family and friends are just the best! We should all be as lucky to have people like that in our lives! :D

3 and 1/2 stars. A sweet story. I started out heating Avery. He was simply too much. All the other the top references were boring. I almost DNF the book. I’m so glad I stuck with it. I loved Christopher and his friends and family. This is a fun age gap story. If you enjoy them you’ll like this.

I kept debating between rounding up or down, but the ending did it for me. It was perfect.

This is one of those stories that I like, but it took me some time to get there. I love the characters individually, but at certain points, didn't like the plot bringing them together.

Overall, it's a nice story for a free afternoon.

This was a short quick read that was okay. Avery Stewart is a 22 year old gay male with a crush on his next door neighbor. Christopher Redding is an self-assured, dominant who is older he is also a college professor. I felt that at times Avery was too unsure of himself for me he was worried that he was too young for Christopher. Christopher worries that he is too old, settled, boring for Avery. I really liked Christopher's family and friends they really wanted these two to be together. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Damn, she did it again! I swear she does this on purpose just to annoy me! Of course, I couldn’t put her book down, again, till I finished it.

The last time I reviewed her book, “The Straight Boyfriend” I may or may not have said that Renae is a closeted man. Well, I may add to that by saying she is a closeted Dom too, or Sub…

So this book is the purest form of BDSM, the emotional part of it. Although the book has sexual content, I can’t call it erotica at all. Why? Because we are guided through Avery’s feelings, who seemed to be attracted to older more mature and dominant men. When he moves into his new house, with his best friend Nick, he suddenly feels obsessed with his new neighbor the Professor. The older man has his own schedule, that, by now, Avery knows by heart. He tends to spend so much time trimming his hedges into a perfect shape, like every day, and that action gives funny tingles to Avery’s different body parts. He can’t help it, the neatness and the puttogetherness of the older man makes him horny as hell.
Then, one day, he has enough with stalking and takes action. With the pretense of searching his mail, what he already collected like a few hours ago, he bends in all different positions, offering the goods, for a very low price. Don’t look at me like that, it was Avery’s words, not mine…judgy readers…huh!
His actions got him an, *cough self-invitation to the professor’s house. Chris, Christopher, oh man he knows what he wants!, has his birthday, and Avery decided that Christopher, not Chris, needs a birthday cake.
Well, that didn’t go as well as he hoped, and he promised himself that he will not give up on him.

I loved Avery, he’s funny, messy and very, very obedient. Avery is all gay men’s wet dream. And by all men, I meant those who like to be in control. Avery needs grounding, and the Professor can deliver it. But Christopher wants more, “more” Avery doesn’t know. He never did more, get in, get ordered around and get out. Being with Christopher though…this time he may want more…

When, last night, I forced Renae to admit that she is kind of a psychic, because she must have gotten in my head, stealing all my wet dreams, and put down in words, she denied it! Well, she didn’t convince me at all!
Dear Renea, I congratulate you again and again, and just so you know, you can crawl in my head anytime you like, and write the stories about my dreams!

One gazillion OptimuMM!

This may seem harsh but oh well, I absolutely hated this book, sorry but it's true. I thought it would be a good book to end my ill day but no I got a self centred whinny brat who has some of the most annoying habits I have ever heard of! Safe to say I did not like this book at all and I can't even put it to words how much

Another cute and adorable story from Renae Kaye. Avery is a sweetheart - a young, somewhat clueless at the beginning sweetheart. Christopher is a middle-aged man who can't quite wrap his head around Avery's interest in him. Together they kind of bumble along a bit - until the well-timed intervention of friends. Adorable and lovely, the secondary characters in this one really help our lovers to shine. It helps that Avery is also a very good and loyal friend and that he really does listen. Low on the angst and high on the will they figure this out sooner rather than later scale, this is a fun and happy read with a super cute ending that left me smiling.
