Lovesick

Rate this book
I couldn’t do broken.

Broken is what he was.

Broken is what I will always be.

To his eyes, that held so much despair, I couldn’t look for long.

To his fist, that clenched so tightly, like he was locking away the sorrow.

To his lips, that never uttered a word, from the years of heartbreak.

And despite it all, I couldn’t stay away from him.

It was like he was drowning in an ocean, and I wanted to grab his face, and whisper to his lips, “Don’t forget to breathe.”

This was how I fell for a man. A man who was so lovesick, I was afraid he would drown me in that same ocean he was lost in.

I have a lot of issues with this book. So so many issues!

Don't get infatuated by its awesome cover, it is only the cover that is awesome about it.

Actually, it had such a good potential - two broken people trying to heal each other as the name of the book suggests - but it was poorly written and it was so out of focus that it went somewhere else rather than the path it promised.

***********************************************

I know I was meant to feel a lot of things in a book like that which involves a lot of different tragedies but I could not relate to the characters and I was more like a non-caring spectator who ended up with an awkward feeling of “What did I just read?”

There was no spark, no chemistry or no real falling in love in this book.

Even their pain felt weird with all the acts of violence it brings with itself.

This book was just the unhealthy relationships of people who needed serious therapy.

***********************************************

Here is the plot line if you can follow who does what, who loves who, who dies, who lives etc.

There are three guys, who are close friends: Macca, Khol and Brice.

Khol was married to Macca’s sister Anika and she was his epic love.

She died with their daughter 5 years ago and Khol has been lovesick for the past 5 years, breathing and existing but not living at all. He has been with no other woman. He is so lost, so broken and so damaged.

The heroine,Keegan, was married to Jamie for 5 years and he was the love of her life, her first love actually.

However, she was being physically abused by him. Her body is full of scars and her soul is damaged. She is another broken character.

Now, the paths of Khol & Keegan cross one another and they start a relationship. Now, you expect that they heal each other and then the happy end, right?

No, don’t read the book if you expect such a sweet story because it goes somewhere else!

Warning!!!!
My biggest complaint about this book may be regarded as a spoiler but I want to warn you because when you realize it, it is too late to drop the book and it is frustrating.

Some people dnf’ed this book thinking there is a love triangle but actually, there is not much of a triangle. Everybody waits for their turn :))) !!!!!

SAFETY:

There is no cheating. Very safe. Each hero starts an affair with the heroine only when the other hero is totally gone.

Oh, but there is more than that, surprise surprise, I have more issues…

These three guys own a very famous and popular night club but they also sell drugs and there is underground fighting and betting going on in the club, as well.

Both Khol and Macca have anger management issues. When they are angry or in pain, they just beat the hell out of a guy and sometimes when they are in deep pain, they kill… just to release the pain or the anger.

The normalization of killing people in the book for releasing anger or pain was another one of my main issues.

I have read books where people killed their sister’s or girlfriend’s rapist(s) or their mother’s killer(s) etc and I never ever said anything about it in my reviews but here, these guys just kill and talk about it as if it is no big deal.

Also, our heroine, who was physically abused by her husband for 5 years goes and falls for two guys who beat and kill people, sell drugs and do other illegal activities! What the hell was the writer thinking, I really wonder?

First, I wondered how and why she stayed with her abusive husband for 5 years but her later decisions showed me how much she lacked judgement and how low her IQ was.

I can read books that involve violence, killing, rape, cheating and love triangles as far as they make sense and serve a purpose in the story and none of them are my triggers but the whole scenario in this book felt like a joke to me!

Here are some dialogues, read & see for yourself…

Keegan & Jamie - Domestic violence:

I loved him so fiercely, so blindly that I gave him my all, and in return he gave me fractions of himself then his fists. His punishments hurt, but then he would kiss me with scolding passion, telling me I was the only one for him. I wanted to believe what he told me, I wanted to believe that our love could overcome his evil actions.

***

His hands moved from my side, snaked up around my neck, and I took one last breath as I watched the love of my life, the only man I’d ever loved, squeeze the life right out of me. Like it was nothing.

Normalization of killing in the book:

“Fuck you’re bad, man.” I kick him under the table. “Why don’t you go kill someone, you haven’t done that in a while. Seriously, just do it.”

***

I look up at him to see marks on his face and his hands are bruised. Did he kill someone today? “Yes,” he says, shocking me. Millie looks at us like she can’t believe his answer.

***

“Kee, please,” I hear the pleading in her voice but I don’t care. I really don’t care right now. I don’t care that Macca could be possibly killing someone. I don’t care that I’m scaring Millie right now.

***

It felt good for those few moments to take the life of someone who doesn’t deserve to breathe. The fucker didn’t deserve to live, so I took his last breath, just as easily as everyone I love has been taken from me. It was as easy as breathing to watch the life squeezed from him and extinguished. It felt good, so good to lose myself and to forget what had just happened.

***

I know that he kills people, I know that for a fact.
I also know that he wouldn’t hurt me, I know that for a fact as well.

Khol & Brice talking about Keegan & Macca:

“You know Macca wanted her.”
I nod, I did know that.
“He won’t do anything, though, he wants you to be happy.”
I nod my head, this I know as well.

Khol thinking about Keegan & Macca:

She thinks what she’s wearing isn’t sexy, it is. Everything about her is sexy. I can even see the way he’s looking at her and I’m thankful that she doesn’t see it because he could be the better choice.

***

His eyes look to her and I know he likes her. He was the one that told me about her, about how beautiful she was, and the only other person he’s called beautiful is his sister. So that’s saying something.

Khol & Keegan

Keegan:

Two broken people can’t mend each other, can they? One has to at least be whole. I’m afraid of the outcome. I’m afraid it will ruin me.

***

He looks lost. He always looks lost. Just those spare moments with me is the only time he doesn’t seem lost in his thoughts.

Khol:

“I’m not going to lie to you, Keegan, I like you, a lot, but I love her more. I don’t want to give you false hope. There probably isn’t a future with me. I’m not going to be your epic love because I’ve had my epic love.

But I can’t let you go just now, you help me to breathe again, and I haven’t breathed in five long years.”

***

“Don’t forget to breathe,” she whispers in my ear. How does she know? How does she know I haven’t breathed a single breath for years?

+2 points for the effort of drawing attention to domestic violence but -2 points for messing it up with heroes with a tendency for violence, murder and other sorts of criminal activities!

And -1 for the misguided focus of the book!

***I’m going to keep this one spoiler-free***

This is the tale of vulnerable, passive characters pursuing their romantic goals of love under the frame of lovesickness.
This is a love tale of people suffering from repressed feelings, hurt, emotional exhaustion, grief and anger.
Lovesickness is a strange cocktail of misery and euphoria. And before you know it, you’re a confused mess who’s suffering from depression and a feeling of dark hopelessness. The main characters of this love story try hard to reclaim their life in the name of love.
Complex characters, commitment, relationships, the value of integrity, self-awareness, strong friendship, self struggle--all handled with deftness and class!
This book is very well written and has an interesting format. It is so suspenseful and keeps you flipping through the pages eager to see what will happen next. The girl that the book was written for touched my heart! You all should read it!

In short:
Heroes 5/5 | Heroine 4/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 5/5 | Writing Style 4/5 | Steam 4/5 | Romance 4/5 | Angst-Suspense 4/5 | Darkness 4/5 | Humor 0/5 | Secondary Characters 4/5 | Drama-Conflict 4/5 | Mystery 2/5 | Twists 5/5 | Pacing Steady | Action 4/5

T.L. Smith bütün tuşlara aynı anda basmış ama sistem kilitlenmiş adeta.
_______________

Bir gün eski eş James yine salça oluyor Keegan'a.

One heck of an emotional read. I don't want to give too much away so I'm going to keep this review short. Lovesick was intense and REAL and ah I cried. It was hard not to.

Keegan is a young woman who finds the courage to leave an abusive relationship. To take back her life and rebuild her broken spirit. And maybe along the way find love again. T.L.Smith did an incredible job creating a strong and beautiful heroine.

4.5 STARS.

This was my first TL Smith so I went in blind. She totally threw me for a loop.

Sometimes, you have to hurt a fucking lot in order to get to where you belong.

I'm still dealing with my feelings. This was hard to take.

English:
Sincerely with this book, you have two clear choices: you love it or you hate it. It wasn't bad.
although I still have some unresolved doubts. 🤔🤔 It is a short book that goes from anger to hope to despair and of course, a happy ever after.

Keegan Hunt married an abuser and barely escaped alive years ago. She is now co-owner with her sister, Millie, of a coffee shop where she works and stays isolated. Everything seems to be fine until one day a man comes in and starts banging on the walls. He's too handsome, but... she thinks she's afraid of this man. Khol Sparks is broken and has been through too many misfortunes. He and his friends, Macca and Brice, are the owners of the successful club in front of the coffee shop. But it doesn't all end there, as Khol takes part in fights to relieve his pain. 💥

Keegan is a damaged and broken person. With everything she's been through in his life she's lucky to be able to tell it, not many can. She lives in fear but when she meets Khol everything seems to disappear. He protects her on multiple occasions with his ex-husband and with that, he is winning her 😮
Khol, on the other hand, lives in torment and during all the book cannot leave it. His moments with Keegan are happy but his head doesn't escape from the past, what he thinks he did wrong. When you start more than halfway through the book it's like any story I've ever read. It's a tortuous past but when you get to know each other everything starts to be happy. But there is a key point where the book completely crumbles 😱 I couldn't stop thinking that at any moment it would come out that what happened wasn't true or I don't know. But it seems not. Yet Keegan's happiness continues and she has a right to be happy after all, doesn't she? A very quick end but I liked it after all.

"Don't forget to breathe"

Emotional, I think I read Lovesick a little apprehensive of what was going to unfold, I was quickly pulled into the lives of Keegan, Khol and then Macca, three main characters that had magnetism each for different reasons.

Lovesick took me on two peoples journey of healing, love, friendships, heartache and heartwarming moments submerged in an intoxicating plot within a book I couldn't put down.

Lovesick is so different to previous books I've read by TL Smith and I absolutely loved the diversity in her characters from previous books. I can honestly say I would pick up a book bt TL Smith without reading the blurb and I know I'll love it.

Such a heartfelt story, I felt every emotion from the characters and my heart did ache at one point.

This is one of those story's that make you ponder and through the journey of these characters it made me think that sometimes some people enter you're life for a reason and you need to embrace it.

Kee: Does he feel the way I feel? Can he feel what I'm feeling? I know it's wrong, I know it's fast. It feels like a hurricane that came from nowhere.

A beautiful story written in each persons pov, some parts I thought jumped forward a little to much or didn't give me enough background on the characters to paint a bigger picture before it all began but overall I adored this book.

Kee: He helped me heal and I helped him, at least I hope I did in some small way.

Arc gratefully received for review purposes.
Hoping that Brice's story will follow ;-)

I never cry while reading, maybe twice ever, but this book literally broke my heart. I willed myself not to break down. I just kept telling myself "It had to happen, though. It's the only way the story could possibly pull together into its true glory. The. Only. Way." I was internally screaming at TL at more than one point while reading LoveSick but, I loved every moment. My desire for the dark has me devoted to TL Smith's words and I crave more. NEED more! I'm addicted and can't wait to find out if there is more to these characters.

Keegan ' Kee' is damaged. She married an abuser and barely escaped with her life. She's been through more than most to be where she is now. She's still living a sheltered life, as normal as it can be, I guess, but she is living the best she can. She's co-owner alongside her sister, Millie of a bakery and works to busy herself. She works so she doesn't think about the past. Everything seems to be going well until one day when a man walks in and starts beating the walls. He is wickedly handsome but... She fears this man. Not only because of the violence he seems to enjoy inflicting but because of what she sees in his eyes. Despair. And so much of it.

"I couldn’t do broken. Broken is what he was. Broken is what I will always be. To his eyes, that held so much despair, I couldn’t look for long. To his fist, that clenched so tightly, like he was locking away the sorrow. To his lips, that never uttered a word from the years of heartbreak."

Khol is broken, to say the least! This man has been through the worst and then some. His story is heart shattering and I felt so much remorse for him throughout the book. He and his friends, Macca and Brice own the very successful nightclub across the street from the bakery. Although they make good money from the club, it's not all on conventional terms. Khol fights. Not for the money. Not for the power. He fights to ease the pain. To focus his rage on anything to avoid thinking about 'them' and what had happened all those years ago.

While Macca and Brice visit the bakery daily for lunch to catch glimpses of the sisters and their friend, Katie, Khol never liked to tag along... until now. The way that Keegan looked at him, tried so hard to calm him the day he took his anger out on the bakery wall, it has him intrigued. He knew he liked her but he just couldn't admit that to himself. Even though he feels guilty for it, he can't stay away. And even though Keegan is intimidated by him and knows she will never be his 'it', she can't force herself to walk away, either.

"She feels like more... she feels like hope."

"My mind is like my own personal hell, and only she seems to know how to pull me from it."

"I do the unthinkable. The very definition of who I'm not. I take his hand."

And my absolute favorite quote...

""Don't forget to breathe", she whispers in my ear.
How does she know?
How does she know I haven't breathed a single breathe for years?
None of them have felt real. I only breathe to stay alive.
How does she know?"

Can it happen for them? Both broken. Both damaged. Both trying to overcome their pasts. Can they form a healthy relationship? Can they heal each other? Can Khol give Kee what she truly deserves? Or does he give her up so she can be with someone who can?

LoveSick has it all! Romance. Love. Pain. Edginess. Despair. Sex. It was extremely intense and full of that raw emotion we expect from this author. I don't think I've ever gotten through a book this quick, but it was really that impossible to set down. I neglected my own personal needs just to find out what happened next. This is not your average, everyday love story and it is heart wrenching. The storyline is suspenseful and the characters are addicting. They are strong when they have every reason in the world to be weak.

Lovesick by TL Smith was ... WOW! How do I describe what I'm feeling right now? How much I loved this book? I feel speechless! It's so hard to comprehend the emotions running through my mind. If I could give it 100 stars, I would. But I can't so it gets 5. You'll love TL's dangerous men who love with everything they've got and I will not lie when I say they'll leave your heart splintered.

2018: 'Don't Forget to Breathe.'

Keegan is the wife of an abusive husband. She wants to leave and finally does. She wants to be stronger, heal. She opens up a cafe with her sister. She feels better in time. Until the guys that own the club across the street come in to offer VIP tickets because Khol punched out their cafe wall. He's dark. He is haunted. He is broken. So why are they both so drawn to each other. Because they're both broken? Khol finds love in Keegan after a great loss. She's healing him, just as he is healing her. Then one dark moment it's all taken away. Can she find her forever? When does she get her happy ending? Read to find out the journey Keegan must follow to end up where she does. This story is full of ups and downs with twists along the way.

Last night I stayed up late reading an arc. Lovesick by T.L. Smith was phenomenal. It made me feel things I didn't want to! I spent a good hour after I finished and simply just thought about it. Smith pulled me in with the blurb. It was a poetic story from there with her magical words. The whole picture was shattered, but in the end made sense to me.

Slow burn. Those two words explain my emotions while reading this raw love story. T.L. Smith left me lovesick. A refreshing read full of dark feelings that will leave your world spinning. Perfection amongst shattered hearts.

Holy crap on a cracker this book had everything!! I was moved to tears it was beautifully written... pain and heartbreak, fear and calm, love and hate this book had it all. The feels from this will stay with me for a very long time! I don't want to give the story away, it had so much... from the pain of losing 'the one' to the pain of trusting 'the wrong one'. Second chance love can heal your heart and soul so you're ready to accept 'the one' when he/she comes along.

Wow. Ok I finished this book in one sitting. This is my first book by this author. I had no idea what to expect going into this story and I'm so glad I went in blind as I think everyone should. This book was so good! It's so addictive and I couldn't put it down.
This is a story of life changing love. Soul mates, epic love and how love has the power to heal in all aspects of life. 5 star read for me!! I highly recommend this book. It was beautiful, real, raw and I'm still thinking about it.

this was beautiful but heart wrenching. i now understand why people say that love heals because Keegan and Kohls love for each other healed the broken parts of them. They may not have been ‘in love’ but their love was exactly what they needed.
My heart broke for Kohl, Keegan and Macca…
I’m so glad this ended the way it did. I’m so glad they all found their happy ever after even if it wasn’t what I expected.

I love the concept of this story. It grabbed my attention right from the start and I enjoyed reading Keegan's story but I had a hard time connecting with her HAE. I can see why so many love this book I can't stop thinking about it, however I think I needed more from the characters to feel that bond.

T.L. told me that this was a second chance love story but with a twist and she was absolutely correct.

As we are transported through this story, we learn of loss, strength, healing, and love.

Loss.
Whether losing your sense of self or a loved or both it can be devastating. You do not want to carry on, you want to stay in limbo. To carry on is just simply unimaginable.

Strength.
When faced with dramatic pasts or horrible situations we gain strength , even if small, to overcome and learn and live.

Healing.
Sometimes people come into our lives to simply heal us. Either by friendship, lust, love but not in love, or a soul that you recognize in yourself and you know that they have a purpose. A purpose to show you that you can and will be ok.

Love.
You can have love that is to show you that at this moment even though that it is not true love but simple love is needed to bring you to a point where you can be ready for true love that you deserve.

All of these come together to be the basis of what is to become the relationship between Keegan and Kohl. They collide in such an odd but good way. Kohl is dark and brooding. Keegan is light and reserved. They know that their relationship is something that is in the now, not forever but to get to their next chapter in their separate lives, they must learn from the other.

There is not a moment in this book that you are going to not feel the varied aspects and emotions from any of the characters, all of them serve a true purpose to complete this story. You will recognize aspects that you have at one time in your life that you have experienced, overcome, or are going through, it simply feels real. There are some twists thrown in to make it a true T.L. read, some dark, some light, some WTF, some steam. I know that I PMd her several times either expressing my angst, anger, anxiety or agreement throughout my reading of Lovesick. It is raw. It is different. It is a whirlwind. It is glorious.

Author kindly provided ARC for an honest review!!

I seriously don't know what to start with, safe to say that this book literally f*ucking messed up my emotions. From the very beginning I was pulled into this book, totally consumed.I always love a good broken story but this one was perfect until towards the ending it didn't really get to me,although it didn't work that way for me the way I expected it at the same time tells how good this author is,this book was a big table turned for me,never seen that plot twist coming.

Kohl was it for me,He was intriguing and everything about him was intensely beautiful,I fell in love with him and in my mind I was already too into the story,Keegan was just as perfect,When Macca came into the story it annoyed me even though TL gave him a bit of an attractive personality it didn't really do anything to me,he didn't give me butterflies like what Kohl gave me,so when TL decided to take out Kohl I wasn't only heartbroken I was furious, literally!I lived vicariously through the characters when I read, and imagine how emotional I was after Kohl was out, balls of fucking emotions,If TL wanted broken she fucking succeeded because this book is the ultimate!!!!.
I shall warn you though this book is very broken, from the very beginning towards the end,it's a HEA but throughout the whole book it's Broken!! Fucking heartbreaking and broken basically just that.
Despite the fact that I was in a book funk after this book,it really showed me how good this author is,I love all her previous books but this one is different, painfully and emotionally different, she did an amazing job twisting my lil heart and I just have to say Bravo!!Because to me it's all about working my lil emotions up,torturing,if it didn't then it really isn't worth it for me .Pick this up and read.

This book was so much more than I was expecting. It absolutely tore me apart emotionally.

I really felt Keegans emotions and turmoil. There's an added depth to this story, Keegans experiences and their lasting effects are put across unbelievably well. This isn't a story where a character gets over a traumatic past within a couple of chapters and that is what made this book all the more special. It made me really empathise with the characters and I couldn't help but love them.

Keegan is trying so hard to move on. She's so unbelievably strong, sweet and I fell head over heels in love with her straight away. She's been through so much, I needed her to get her HEA.

She's slowly getting through each day when someone comes into her life that's just as, if not more, troubled than Keegan. There's something that drew her (and me) from the start. The pain, anger, his messed up frame of mind and that something else that he has that is so hard to explain...he intrigued me so much. He's pretty much my perfect troubled book boyfriend. He plays a major part in helping Keegan overcome her past, even though he's taking so much from her. There were times I really disliked him, one time I actually hated him, but in his own way he does care and I couldn't stay mad at him.

Keegans story is heart breaking. It will make you think and it will definitely make you feel.

TL Smith has out done herself with Lovesick. The depth of the characters, the story that broke me and put those broken pieces back together, the twists, the emotions...it's all perfect. This is already in my top books for 2017.

Lovesick got my mind all foggy. Not because it wasn't good. No! Lovesick is a book that I literally couldn't put down. When I started it; I was so engrossed in this story of Khol and Keegan, that I was seriously hoping for a HEA. The back and forth from past to present, doesn't usually get me interested in a story, but in this book, it was needed. You learned so much about each of them.

They are both broken for different reasons. Keegam- because her husband abused her for many years until she left him, beaten and in the hospital.
Khol- The only love he's ever known, was taken from him. His wife, his child, both the loves of his life.
He couldn't love Keegan. He was still in love with his wife and child. He wanted to be with them, to get rid of the pain he felt everyday. He met Keegan. She fell in love with him, but he couldn't love her the way she loved him.

Macca, Khol's friend who saw Keegan first, stepped back to let Khol have her. He knew Khol needed her to heal. This story will touch you in different ways. Making you want more of it. Something tragic happens, and Keegan among everyone else in the story is hurting. They all need each other to cope, and move on.

I hate telling the whole story, because this is a story you much read. It's so amazing. There is an HEA, don't worry. Not one you really expected after reading a big part of the story. Relax, it's okay.
The only thing is, I wanted more, but I had unanswered questions when the story was finished. Other than that. This is a book. I could reread, and never tire.

*Third read - 2023: 4*
This time around I found some flaws in the development of the story and an inconsistency, but I still wanted to cry for Keagan and Cole. Just when things started to look brighter and there was hope again. My heart just broke... So when an author can make me feel so much even after reading the story multiple times in 5 years, it means it is a good story period.

*First read- 2017: 5*
This is a book that probably wouldn't have drawn my attention, nor by cover nor title. Buts since someone highly recommended it, I gave it a shot.

The prologue made me doubt about continuing, but keeping in mind the recommendation and the shortness of the story, I went on reading.
The longer I read the more I was drawn in the story. How much pain can someone carry inside, how dammaged/scarred can one be, what does it take to be soothed, why do some people meet... Perhaps the ending wasn't a big surprise, but the way the path of the characters led them there was written lovely. It made their struggles, ups and downs touchable and real.

This was more than I expected from this "in-between" book and maybe I'll read something else from this author in the future.

edit: I did read other books and they didn't disappoint, but this one stays the best! The way she describes what can be seen in someones eyes, just stunning...
Don't understand why I gave it only 4 stars the first time I read it. Definitly worth 5!
