A New Kind of War :: A New Kind of Service

During a brutal war against monstrous, spider-like aliens, the Space Marines try to improve morale with a top-secret, gene-splicing drug that temporarily turns men into women. Marines who take the drug have sex with the Marines who don't. Everyone is happier.

Most troopers just blow off steam, but two Marines connect in a way that will change them forever. A young Private gets in touch with his feminine side and finds the joy in submitting to a man. A battle-hardened Lieutenant finds redemption and learns that sexual attraction and respect can go hand-in-hand. How far will this relationship go?

Swapship Troopers is a story filled with lots of giant bug killing and lots of sexy times. What more could you want?

I read one too many short story horror collections last month and was feeling the need to stop reading, maybe forever, and pick myself up a new hobby but instead I decided to give this one a shot (I did commit to review it, after all) and it knocked me right out of my mini-slump. I’m no fan of action or military maneuvers so there’s no need to be put off by the Starship Troopers resemblance if you aren’t either. I haven’t read Starship Troopers which, from what I’ve heard, may likely bore me to death but I did see the movie. I loved the movie. It was gory fun. This book is gory fun too and it’s not at all boring.

It’s about giant ant-like alien monsters who occupy planets and murder everything in their path and the Marines who risk their lives to keep civilians safe. All that alien murderation makes a man weary and eager to burn off some steam but the trouble is they are often deployed to planets where the only companionship they have are each other. In order to keep morale up, the military creates something called “Pink Vector” which is an injectable that turns men into women. There’s also a “Blue Vector” serum to turn them back once the fun is over.

Half of the men are injected and suddenly grow womanly parts. They’re all good humored and open minded and go along with this kooky plan. Much fun is had. Then they are turned back into men and are eager to get back to work.

Now don’t you go thinking too hard about the implications about any of this. This is a book that doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously and I loved that. Some of the men aren’t the comeliest of women but everyone just goes with the flow and has a good, kinky time. Yeah, what goes on is a little nutzo but I mean that as a compliment. It’s beautifully nutzo and even a little romantic when one paired up couple begin to have feelings other than the sexy kind for each other.

The blend of sexy times vs. action is well balanced. There is a lot of action but it never bored me which is kind of shocking actually. I thought it was hilarious to watch a tough Marine turn into a woman and then have to deal with pervy civilians as they treated him as if he were braindead and a toy for them to paw and insult.

I enjoyed this book so much. Yeah, so, it perhaps wasn’t the most believable of romances starting out but considering the circumstances, the author did a decent job of turning pure sexual attraction into something more in the end. It also never got angsty or dreary and was just what I needed after my series of dark and dreadful reads the month previous. It was totally enjoyable and that’s all that counts to me.

This is the first Walker Long book I've read and like many of the other reviewers I had no idea what to expect. Once I flipped the first page, though, I was hooked and transfixed. The story was so compelling, the characters were likable, unique enough and easy to root for. It was a wonderful blend of action packed sci-fi battles, military operations, hot and steamy erotic scenes, humor, sass and a romance I never quite expected. It was one of those novels that kept me guessing at every turn and made me enjoy the ride and the journey both the main character Q, his LT and fellow Marines went through. For a book that started with heavy battles and hardcore alien enemies it had some really tender and intimate moments. I wasn't sure how gender swap would work in such a setting but in the end, it felt very natural. The sex positive attitude was refreshing and added to my enjoyment of the story.
I really enjoyed the writing style, the characters, the world building and I look forward to reading more of Walker Long's books. Preferably something set in the same universe. I think there is a lot more to be explored there. Five Fantastic Stars!

Much to my delight, Swapship Troopers was - first and foremost - a solid science fiction adventure tale, openly inspired by Paul Verhoeven's film version of Robert A. Heinlein's literary classic. Also to my delight, the gender-swap element is not only a well-done bit of transgender erotica, but it is actually integral to the story.

Walker Long weaves multiple genres through his tale, including science fiction, military thriller, transgender erotica, and even genuine romance. Taking its cue from the source material, Swapship Troopers introduces us to a group of Space Marines whose job it is to protect against a monstrous insectile alien invasion. The opening battle is frantic, bloody, and exhilarating, effectively establishing the concept, the characters, and the stakes. With humanity triumphant once again, the Space Marines are granted some much-needed relaxation, courtesy of a mysterious pink serum. Half the crew is injected, turning them into wholly feminine versions of themselves, with the other half of the crew picking bedmates according to their rank.

The transformation process is nicely detailed, with a solid sci-fi explanation for how it works (and how the blue serum reverses it), and the selection process is suitably amusing. These newly formed women are still Space Marines, and still know how to follow orders, so succumbing to their sexual urges is not as awkward as you generally find in such stories.

What makes the story stand out is the core relationship between a Private and his Lieutenant, an opportunistic gender-swapped encounter that reveals something more about both of them. As a heterosexual romance blossoms, Walker Long does a wonderful job of exploring how that impacts two men, two Space Marines, both in the chain of command and on the field of battle. The character development here is fantastic, and Private Quantrill's embracing of his feminine side is just a strong. There is no instant acceptance here, but neither is there prolonged angst. Everything develops naturally, heading towards a dangerous confrontation that will redefine their personal and professional relationship.

Swapship Troopers is a smart, erotic homage to the science fiction genre, and a gender-swap story that manages to be both exciting and erotic where it needs to be, moving seamlessly between action in the field and action in the bedroom. A fun read that is sure to entertain.

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say, I haven't ever read a book quite like this one before! It starts off strong and doesn't let up until the very end. The author was clearly inspired by 'Starship Troopers,' but that doesn't mean that this is a retelling of that story. At first I thought the futuristic military setting just serve as a background for a story of gender-bending sex, but 'Swapship Troopers' has as much, if not more, sci-fi action as it does hardcore erotic content. I could see it as something out of Heavy Metal magazine. Given that this is an indie-pubbed book, I especially appreciated the well-edited, tight prose.

I really wasn’t sure of this book to start because it honestly seemed like a retelling of Starship Troopers, which by the way I love, and just recently watched again.  Once it got going and the “Pink Vector” was introduced the story really took a life of its own.

The main character, Quantrill, Q for short, is one that will quickly find a place in your heart with his/her strength, courage, and heart.  He/she is the heart and soul of his platoon and it was surreal to experience the emotions of what he went through when he was turned from an awkward looking man to a drop dead gorgeous woman.

“Did it make sense to be jealous of himself?”
He finds himself being paired with his LT. who he has admired and honestly had a bit of a man crush on even if he didn’t realize it.   Q’s feelings become confused as all the female hormones play with him and lines get blurred for both him and his LT as they pair up more and more.

Swapship Troopers really surprised me, it has a solid science fiction military story going on with an awesome love story that would classify as transgender.  However, I just saw it as beautiful.  I don’t think it should matter what gender people are if you love each other nothing and no one should hold you back.

I am giving Swapship Troopers Five Boundless Stars, I loved it and I was really impressed with Longs writing and the imagination that went into the telling of this story.

Confession...I expected to like this book. It seemed different, and I was intrigued. I didn't expect to LOVE this book, but that's exactly what happened as I got deeper into Swapship Troopers by Walker Long.

In this action-packed sci-fi story, a group of rough, tough Marines are charged with saving civilization from creepy, terrifying, bloodthirsty Bugs. But it gets lonely in space, and it seems that the powers that be have come up with a unique solution for boosting troop morale.

The action sequences and sci-fi technology are top-notch, reminding me in many ways of my favorite in this genre, Jolie Mason. Then the author weaves into this backdrop a beautiful, heartfelt romance that was completely unexpected, at least by me. Other reviewers have called the story sex- and trans-positive, and it is that. But for me the beauty was the portrait of two people who, against all odds, were meant to be together.

I loved this book, you will too. 5 BIG STARS!!

I have to confess, I kind of expected this book to be terrible. It’s the first I’ve read from this author, and there is so much terrible erotic romance out there. I opened it with some trepidation. I was thrilled to find that my assumptions were baseless. This book is quite good, certainly head and shoulders above most in this genre. The sci-fi action scenes are engaging, exciting, and well-executed. The characters are charming and sketched beautifully, especially Quantrill, the point of view character. The naughty parts are suitably hot. The romance is touching. The editing is excellent. I also appreciated the sex-positive and trans-positive tone. It is really pretty remarkable. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

This was great!

Alright, first-off, I love all things sci-fi and space-oriented and if you can infuse that with some HOT HOT HOT scenes, that makes for happy reading!

I loved the elements of gender-swapping inside this book, which was such a cool concept, and the women-characters were portrayed SO WELL. Strong and bad-ass, just like you want them to be.

Without giving the plot away, I’ll just say that the action on the battlefield was as AMAZING as the action in the bedroom. If you’re looking for a new twist on sci-fi erotcia, you’ll love this book.

I was very skeptical when this showed up as a suggested read during one of my amazon searches. What a pleasant surprise this book turned out to be. I loved it. There's action, giant bugs, guns and smoking hot sex. I didn't think Walker Long could pull off a successful gender swap but boy was I wrong. I've read this book 4 times now and still discover little details I missed in the first reads. I don't normally cough up 5 stars but this books earned every last one.

War can harden a man, but the soft touch of a woman can change all that. Women are rare in war. But with the help of PinkVector any man can be transformed into a woman in every sense.

While off fighting BUGS, the men get a little break. PinkVector is injected in several males. Q is injected and becomes a gorgeous woman, that any man would be lucky to have. Hardaway keeps Q for himself. It is thru the fighting and killing, that a love story emerges between Q and Hardaway. Q realizes that he enjoys being a woman and never turns back.

This is an action packed story with a tweak of romance sprinkled in. I loved the action parts, but I was held captive by the romance of the story. It seemed odd at first that men would willingly take PinkVector and take their turn. Kudos to Author Walker Long for using his imagination and coming up with something like that. Brilliant and inventive. I enjoyed the store, the last 10% of the book I was worried and on the edge of my seat trying to figure out if there would be an HEA or a death scene!!! Frustrating! All in all a good read that will have you wondering what the future holds.

Swapship Troopers is a futuristic story about marines who are tasked to defend human colonies and infrastructures from ferocious giant spider like aliens. The marines have recently come up with a DNA modifying serum, that can change a male into a female and back again, as a way to help boost morale for these units that are deployed in space for long periods of time. The troops all enjoy this chance for a bit of fun, but for two marines it becomes something more meaningful.

This book has elements of scifi, military thriller, and gender swapping erotica with a bit of romance to top it all off. The amazing thing to me was how well the author managed to mesh all these into one terrific story. The scifi/military thriller part of this story is very well done, and with the added fun of the gender swapping erotic elements it becomes an absolute joy to read. There are thrills, laughs, and sexiness all enmeshed throughout this terrific story.

The character, plot, and scene development are all first rate. I was totally drawn into the story, I connected with the characters, and thoroughly enjoyed the story arc from beginning to end.

Since I generally review erotica here I suppose I should touch on that specifically: The erotic scenes in this book are fantastic. The sex was hot and steamy, described very well and the author absolutely shows the reader rather than telling them (that is true for the entire book from the battle scenes to the romantic scenes, to the sex scenes). I loved the gender swapping, it was written in a fun and, I thought, rather insightful way.

The copy editing was quite well done, there were a perhaps two or three small things that caught my eye as I read, but nothing that interrupted the story flow.

I received a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I know what you are thinking, this is not my normal read, but I am an adventurous reader. You don't have to be to enjoy this book. The interaction between the military men is a bond a friendship that is built on trust and action on the field of battle.. A twist is added to their relationship when a gene splicing serum is created to make a male solider female for moral purposes. Battling an alien bug like tarantula is hard work. A little sack time can go along way. Q is a military man by the skin of his teeth, he just passed the tests. But proved to be an amazing soilder anyway. His Lieutenant in charge is a bad ass in action and reputation, I think Q had a crush on his LT long before the drugs. And vise versa since Q seems to always be saving Hardway's back side in battle. When given the pink serum, Q turns into a busty girl. Most of his platoon agree on the hotness he possesses. The soilder is a little jealous of his female counter part. The connection between Q And Hardway ,is what endears you to their relationship on and off the battle field and in the bedroom. The ending is plausable and I was generally pleased. As I didn't see an outcome for there military men. Give it a chance it may surprise you.

Short review: It's remarkable and well worth the read.

Longer review: You know how you see these 'inspired by' books and it's just a one note joke and nothing more? Not here. If you're into TG/CD or any sort of gender play. You should read this book. It's that simple.

Now if you're not... could it be for you?

Yes.

The book is DAMN INTERESTING. The gender element is a nice bonus if you're into it. If not, it's a functional part of the story against another story where humanity struggles to survive against alien bugs.

There's going to be some comparisons to another bug war but that would be unfair to the author. How many stories are there of boy wizards, a party returning a magic item, etc. Sci-Fi marines fighting bugs isn't new but how much is anymore? Plenty of love stories out there but it's the way the author presents it.

Fun banter, different planets, great *ahem* scenes in bed, and all around nice military sci-fi.

It's a war... a bug war and damn if you don't care about these characters. Nicely done.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book. I rarely read transgender or gay books, but I was curious enough to read it. The writing is compelling and the battle scenes with alien enemies were exciting. You will be biting your nails off by the end of the book!!

I found Private Quantrill a compelling character as both a man and a woman. At first, when the Pink Vector came on the scene and some members of the platoon were transforming into women I was a little jarred. I have no bias against gay relationships, but it’s just not my thing. Then Quantrill ended up being such a great woman, it started to feel like I was reading a m/f romance. He was one heck of a bad ass woman, that’s for sure! The developing relationship between him/her and Lieutenant Hardaway was hot, but also sweet. Both of these characters are interesting and compelling and you want to keep reading so you can know them better. This sci-fi book is action-packed, with lots of sizzling hot sex scenes and romance. Definitely worth a read!

Freaky good.... Wow this takes some getting your head around. Fantastic sci-fi erotica. And genuinely both. The action adventure carries you along at a good pace then the freaky erotica takes hold and you're hurtling out of control. Until a sweet thread of romance ties it all together quite nicely.... But I'm still freaked out. In an intriguing way.... This gender flipping thing blows the mind in terms of trying to imagine how it would feel. Which I think is brilliant storytelling.

I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
I have to admit I didn't like the Starship Troopers movie, but this book was entertaining. I was a little cautious when I read that some of the men in the book turned into men, but it just made parts of the book hilarious. I definitely recommend this must read.

I can't write enough good things about this book...I was a little weirded out at the thought of men into women but Walker Long nailed it! The similarities to Starship Troopers just adds that little bit of familiarity to a totally good story! The chemistry between the men/women is so unique but so believable and so hot the book sizzles that I could not put it down. I am definitely looking forward to more Walker Long stories! I voluntarily read and reviewed this book!

Good read

This is actually a good book. Take out the sex and it’s a good sci-fi story. Take out the sci-fi and it’s a hot sex story. If a guy who gets a DNA altering injection which turns him into a woman is still a guy, in your mind, this book might not be for you. To everyone else, it’s worth checking out.

3 stars.

This was a hoot.
I went into this one knowing I’d have to have my silly goggles on and not to take it too seriously. I’m glad I took a chance, not even mad I spent $5.99 on such a short story, because I really enjoyed it. Laughed my ass off at the ridiculousness of it all.
The reason I didn’t give it a higher rating was, while a highly entertaining story, the writing was a little clunky and the need to constantly try to jam military slang or jargon in to the conversation could sometimes seem too much, even a little forced and detracted from the story rather than added to it. And the fact that they all seem to brush off becoming women and suddenly seeing their team mates in that ‘sort of way’ and let them dick them was a little too convenient. From what I understood the vector changed them into women but it didn’t change who they were as a person and I can’t see all of them suddenly seeing the guys they think of as brothers in a sexual way. Maybe if it had been another platoon they didn’t know, because I wouldn’t suddenly find any of my friends suddenly dickable because I was horny. I know guys don’t have to find a chick attractive to dick her but I don’t think a guy would willingly receive dick from his bro, even if they were suddenly a woman, just because they’re horny. Maybe a quiet, anonymous handy in the dark, but certainly not a full night of romping.
Q’s reaction may have been a little more believable seeing as he already had a hero worship thing going on for the LT, I think he would have been delighted to give him a friendly handy and only in semi darkness.
Also I think this book could have been longer, the world building was pretty decent for a smut book and I found all of the stuff outside of the smexy times fun too. I would have liked to see a few more missions and perhaps interactions, not even necessarily sexual, between Q and LT when they’re both dudes.

All in all a fun read.

Woah! i actually really liked this! It has action and love thrown all in one! it was really interesting seeing these 2 MC's come together. The story and writing were so different from what i was used to it threw me for a second. Not because its bad but because it doesnt follow any normal cliches really. there wasnt really any drama between the MC's, they just gradually liked each other more with each interaction. The fact that the marines didnt argue, refuse, or complain much about the drug that turns them female definitely threw me for a loop but its also true that you dont get much choice in military situations so it wasnt entirely unrealistic. I like that the platoon ended up enjoying it and took turns.
The MC Quantrill though is most interesting as he seems to start to identify himself as a female toward the middle end, preferring his female body even. I really wondered how they could possibly have a happy ending when homosexuality is illegal and the Pinkvector drug to turn them female is strictly regulated. but the author found a way! and what a way to go!
Only 'bad' points for me were the romance was a little sudden and was a little too uncomplicated if that makes sense. but honestly it didnt bother me too much. The other point is that the MC Hardaway kinda abused his position a bit when it came to Quantrill. Made him be his partner, didnt let him have a chance to stay male when the rest of the platoon switched places the 2nd time Pinkvector went around, quite demanding in the bedroom in a way that made me slightly uncomfortable because I was thinking of it in the POV of a man who had just turned into a female but still had the mind of a man and then being ordered to suck a dick. the saving grace for me in this was that Quantrill liked it and got off on the powerplay and power dynamics.
Overall though i loved this. its very different and kept me hooked the entire time.

I received this book for free through Voracious Readers Only.

I love Starship troopers, and this is a fun parody.
Quantrill is a male soldier subjected to a gender-swapping drug and selected to spend the night with their commanding officer. After a while, feelings start getting involved. Quantrill is a very relatable character, and I think the heart of the story. But the fact that the it is set during a war with the Formids (alien bugs) is what really sold it for me. I'm just a sucker for military science fiction.

The concept of turning your own soldiers into comfort women is insane though, and playing the book off as a comedy/parody doesn't make it right. There is a lot of toxic masculinity, homophobia and misogyny in this book, and it is not handled particularly well. It was grating, especially considering that this was written in the 21st century.

If you like scifi adventure, a lot of sex, monster insects, and oodles of big guns, this swashbuckling story is for you. It's fast moving with plenty of excitement. Stuck on desolate moons, surrounded by dead bugs, what can an all male marine corp do in their leisure time? Courtesy of a magic drug, called pinkvector, half turn into women...and wow!
This is a highly recommended fun read.
