The Last Brigade #2

Standing in the Storm

Rate this book
Everyone else has fallen. There's an army on the way. Two women stand in their road. Can they save the 7th Cav from annihilation?

The Last Brigade sends out long-range reconnaissance patrols to begin Operation Overtime, its mission of rebuilding America. But in nearby Prescott, Arizona, a maniacal warlord holds thousands of Americans as slaves, planning to trade them for the fuel he needs. To the east lurks the strange religious cult named the Caliphate of the Seven Prayers of the New Prophet, which kills anyone who doesn't convert. And why is a Chinese military vehicle found to the north?

With enemies on all sides, Nick Angriff risks everyone and everything to save the innocents he has sworn to protect. Although outnumbered and outgunned, the 7th Cavalry will not be outfought. They must either stand in the storm or see their beloved country die a final death.

Less politics, more action

Publication date: April 21, 2017
Publisher: Dingbat Publishing
Language: English
ASIN: B01MZAF4GK

Really outstanding dystopian fiction which follows one preserved reinforced Army brigade, more than 50 years after the collapse of America and apparently a good portion of the rest of the world. The politics of the collapse is covered in volume one. The goal of the brigade and its five star general commanding, is the restoration of the United States under the constitution. Of course there are enemies including enemies within.

In the second book of The Last Brigade series, the storm breaks over General Nick Angriff and his 7th Calvary with a vengeance.

Coming out of their Long Sleep, the 7th finds itself needing to shake off their lethargy almost too soon to rescue thousands of people from slavery at the hands of the ersatz Republic of Arizona and its fraud of a commander who patterns himself the new General Patton. But there is a further danger, in that the rescue mission from the first volume drew the ire of the Caliphate and both enemy must be dealt with simultaneously in a harrowing and action-packed battle filled with success and tragedy.

The promise of thrills and betrayals made in the first book come true in this book, leaving the reader unable to stop reading. A real page-turner, full of what every reader of military fiction loves. Highly recommended.

I bought this book from Amazon, as I did with the first book and started it as soon as I finished the first.

This was a step up from book one and lead off in some action packed directions. Probably had enough action for 2 books as it was non stop from the first chapter to the end. Great characters I find my self caring about, great action and some scenes that remind me of real life struggles such as the battle of Kapyong in the Korean War.

It had me picking my copy up at every opportunity and it certainly didn't disappoint. I probably should have read the short stories recommended by the author (read some of his comments between books) and will go back to those. However this is the sort of book that lets me step out of my daily life and take a trip with some people who I am invested with.

So its on to the next book.

FYI, the tooth fairy was not real

Even if she was, the temporary joy of finding a planted coin don't last long. Ya patriotic? Don't mind a widdle dash of digital blood & guts in reading? If ya get a mite woozy, don't fret. The General Angriff, aka, Nick the A, will give ya a hand. Waking up a few hundred years afterwards from cryrogenic sleep hasn't addled his commitment one bit. That promise to revive the USA from enemies foreign & domestic. If finding a couple of nihilistic bad orgs was not bad enuff, the back to back battles in sequence had one good point. It bonded his new command under the 7th Calvary Flag. Whether Marines, Aviators, Army, or special ops, there is no denying that they fought , died, got wounded, and survived as AMERICANS! MAGA

From the ashes of American society rise a new breed of heroes. Author Webb delivers in this second book of his post-apocalyptic military thriller series. We can't help but cheer as Nick Angriff leads his beloved troops against their greatest challenge since "going cold". The quirky cadre of servicemen and women under Nick's command delight us as they struggle to find their place among their new found family and in the world at-large. With enemies closing in on three sides and threatening their mission, their lives, their hope of a better day for their long-estranged countrymen, "Nick the A" doubles down on a risky strategy to take back the America he and his troops once knew--one blood-soaked hill at a time.

William Webb has really stepped up his game with the second book in his series related to the Last Brigade. Standing in the Storm's heroic characters from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, under the leadership of Gen. Nick Angriff, were frozen in time when the U.S. underwent an unknown set of catastrophic events. Upon awakening some 50 years later, they are faced with enemies galore - among them the army of the New Republic of Arizona, led by a delusional "General Patton", the Caliphate of the Seven Prophets, and the Chinese Army. Hold onto your hat. This book takes you for an action-packed ride. I'm ordering book three ASAP. John Babb

Standing in the Storm. William Alan Webb

Book two in this series. General Nick Angriff, the leader of the last brigade is in a fight for their survival in a world filled with chaos since America as we know it has ceased to exist. Non stop action. In the end, another unspeakable act of betrayal and treachery, outright murder has occurred. This is an excellent read. Enjoyed immensely!

Entertaining

I don't usually write reviews, however I found this book so entertaining that it was difficult to put down. Yes many of the situations were implausible, however the upbeat can do attitude of the sometimes larger than life characters bringing truth and justice in the American way was just plain fun to read.

Another great read. Much like the first book in the series, it tends to start out a little slowly as the author sets up the storyline. Then it absolutely 'takes off'!. The action is engaging and not particularly predictable. Mr. Webb has an interesting technique of telling the story from the perspective of multiple characters, and backing up the timeline slightly as he moves from one character to another.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and had great difficulty setting it down. I have already started book 3 and enjoyed the 'teases' that Mr. Webb left in the epilogue of book 2. If you like military stories, especially ones that provide a fair amount of tactical details, you will really like the Last Brigade series.
As an aside -- In the afterword of book 1, the author recommends reading "The Ghost of Voodoo Village: Short story and Bonus Chapters for Standing the Final Watch (The Last Brigade Book 1.5)" for some backstory information before going on to book 2.. I gather this was material originally in book 1 but extracted to make the manuscript a more reasonable length. I found it interesting but not critical to the story in book 2, so go for it if it is easy but know that it is not critical.

The plan by forward-thinkers of our time was to insert a Trojan Horse of sorts into the future after The Collapse. In the Sonoran Desert, in Southwestern Arizona, within a hollowed-out mountain lies our Trojan Horse; The Last Brigade aka Operation Overtime. The battle lines have been drawn, the eastern border running north to south is Prescott, Phoenix, and Tucson, west to the Nevada/California borders. Five-Star General of the Army Nick Angriff led The Last Brigade; now known as the prestigious 7th Cavalry. To the north was the holdout of a battalion-size band of Americans led by a warlord calling himself General Patton. To the east is the Muslim religious cult named the Caliphate of the Seven Prayers of the New Prophet which has overtaken the previously known United States of America. To the west is an abandoned Chinese armored brigade controlling most of California west of the mountains. General Nick Angriff’s, or as his troops lovingly call him Nick the A, mission is to re-establish the Constitution and the Bill of Rights while freeing and/or protecting any Americans that may still exist. Prepare for an exciting no-holds-barred battle on three fronts! Four.point.five. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I had some issues with the first book (too much right-wing nonsense) but still an interesting idea in there. The follow up is much better, less of the irritating right wing stuff, and more of coming to terms with the new USA that they find themselves in. Plenty of military stuff as they take on a variety of bad guys in the area, and very much find themselves up against it. So, it worked. We find out a bit more about the new US as they do and the fun is in the action but also in the discovery of who and what is out there.
I look forward to the next one to see more, I hope the author doesn't over-egg it with too many conflicting discoveries, I also suspect we will find that Nick the A's wife and daughter are still alive and that could become a key plot area. I kind of hope not because it feels like it is being telegraphed and I would rather be surprised by something different.

Book two

Mistakes: found three. One was a spot that said see notes.
Plot: Still over the top and a lot of fun.
Characters: Larger than life and likable characters.
I give this a 6.5/10 due to the mistakes and the two chapters from other books. I find that to be a cheap trick to up the page count.

The book gives a better picture in to some of the main characters' backgrounds. Some of the combat scenes are great.

"Nick the A," actually leaves a lot to be desired from a leadership perspective and from the perspective of a father.

Picking up pace

So the world is getting more fleshed out with antagonists and complexity. Let's hope the characters have a journey and evolve in the next book. Otherwise, its rather flat.

Decent read

More of the same action! But it works, making a good read. The new mayor was a good choice. The main action scene shows why you do not attack a real military with a large mob.
