A 4.5 level earthquake caused by a toe-curling kiss. Despite drugs, Cooper Anneveinen sees what lies hidden underground. His untrained gift will rock Pittsburgh to the ground - unless Ash helps wrestle his powers under control. Ash Ravenna cleans water, talks to it, and coaxes it to obey. His collaboration with a new architect takes a dire turn as their fated attraction sends Cooper's gift wild. Ash teaches Cooper control, Cooper puts everything on the line to learn. When their sizzling powers throw them a curve neither expects, more than just their life hangs on the line.
This book was a fascinating introduction into a new world that I am excited to read more about.
I think that I only had one issue that makes me say that this only gets 4.5 stars instead of a full 5 stars, and that is in the introduction of Ash & Cooper. I felt that the characters we were introduced to in the beginning of the book were not actually the characters that were developed as the book progressed. Ash was someone of great power and training who was so dangerous that Cooper's parents were concerned about his safety. Cooper was a struggling architect who had occasional flashes of insight into the rocks/earth around him, but his family didn't take him seriously. But, as the characters were developed, it changed to Ash being powerful but basically untrained and Cooper having that same amount of power, but his family thought he was a squib in their wizarding world. I could understand Ash, to a degree, as being a misunderstanding of others about how well trained he was, but Cooper's situation felt more like there was a major shift in the plotting of the story that occurred after the introduction was written and the edits didn't take that into account.
Having said that, once the story gets going, it was excellent! I loved that once Cooper finally accepts that he can have feelings for Ash, it is their powers that actually keep them apart. I have so many questions that I want to have answered in the coming books about the ley lines and what people had done to the node that Ash & Cooper found. The books in this series will definitely be on my must buy list as soon as they come out.
What a wonderful and fun paranormal story! I loved the power Ash and Cooper have over certain elements, and how they are only beginning to learn how to control them. Their love for each other blossoms and if they can keep it in control so they don't interfere with the natural elements in Pittsburgh they won't accidentally cause earthquakes and storms. The question is, can they do that? Ash owns some potential Superfund property that he wants to clean up using only his powers and discovering that he isn't strong enough (yet?) to do that is hard on Ash's finances and his confidence. He learns to depend on Cooper, who is an architect and an engineer besides being able to sense things he shouldn't be able to see. A great story. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
**I received this in exchange for an honest review.**
This is a wonderful addition to this series!! So, those of you who read "Like a Phoenix", know this is actually a prequel to that even though 'Like a Phoenix' was released first.
Anyhow, Getting to see how Ash and Cooper met was everything I thought it would be! It was explosive and beautiful. Seeing what Ash and Cooper could do in Like a Phoenix, made it so curious to see them here as they're still learning their powers. Especially Cooper. Ash, though already having a sort of bad reputation, was still also learning about the full extent of his powers. He was pretty much self taught and we get to see how they both start to really flourish under a true teacher. Also, it was fascinating to see exactly how much Cooper & Ash amplify each other as well as just fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. It was beautiful and I loved every second of it.
Though I do have a few more questions than I actually have answers. Like, how exactly some characters in Like a Phoenix get introduced. When do Ash and Cooper really settle into their unbreakable bond? Because even though this is headed there, in this book it's still a very new relationship. So, will there be another book that fits before Like a Phoenix?
Anyway, just a few question but I still really liked this book. I can't recommend it enough. I really hope to see more of these characters or more in this world in the future!
First off I want to say it’s a good thing this is a series, otherwise the ending would have ticked me off. Not that it ended unhappily, just that it is a tentative happily for now and there is so much more to Cooper and Ash’s story.
I was drawn in to the story from the beginning and I loved Cooper and Ash. As I said before there is a lot that isn’t finished, questions about the elements and their powers that need answers. What was there was intriguing though. I liked the idea of elemental users hiding among regular folk.
The one intimate scene was intense but showed how these two were drawn to each other.
The story was far too short, I my opinion. However, I loved all that was there. I eagerly await book two.
PS. When I went to look for a sequel, I found Like a Pheonix by Olivette Devaux and Kate Pavelle that mentions Cooper and Ash as an established couple (it even has some threesome action going). However this book was published before Like a Rock… I’m going to have to read it to see how it fits in. I hope Like a Rock isn’t the end of Cooper and Ash’s story.
I really enjoyed this book. It was unique, refreshing, and the romance really sparked. I found the concept of people with special, elemental gifts new and interesting. I especially liked getting to see some pivotal scenes from both characters point of view and seeing how they affected both men. I am looking forward to reading more.
I have received a free ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
A great story with the core focusing on elementalists, people who can exert varying degrees of control over an element, from simply being able to ask it out right up to being able to change it by their will alone.
We follow Ash and Cooper, a water and earth elementalist. Ash knows what he is and has trained for a long time to control water. His life's work is to clean water and being polluted rivers back to what they can be, which he does through buying various real estate properties where he can work on the water. However, the world of elementalists is very competitive, with each having a territory and Ash not being accepted by many others. As such Ash's first project had to be abandoned to another group as he ceded the territory. His newest project requires him to bring in an architect to help with the buildings on site, but he needs one thatb can work cheap.
Cooper needs work. He got his license as an architect, but his grades aren't helping him get a job; too many accusations of cheating for knowing things he couldn't about the earth. Cooper is trying to make a name on his own, but it isn't easy. When his first client, Ash, asks him what he is sensing with his power, Cooper is startled to realize that what he's always felt is both real and something others have.
Cooper and Ash are so fascinating together. Between their powers and their interactions they really spark together, but they are hesitant to make a move. When they do the actions are more explosive than expected, but the fact that it forces them apart makes them so miserable and is again really sweet. They work well together and I want to see their partnership, both in work and in life, flourish.
This is the first book in The Disorderly Elements Series. I would rate it more of a 4.5 Stars. What an fantastic book the writing was amazing. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters captivating. The characters were well developed and thought out. Ash Ravenna and Cooper Anneveinen are the MC’s of this book and they are very likeable characters. There was humor, an earthquake, storms, headaches, family and so much more in this book. Cooper’s family gets involved his dad has a clear dislike for Ash and lets him know it too. But his Uncle Owen helps them both with their different gifts and on how to do some basic things so they don’t accidently destroy the city. Because intimate their time, talk about making the earth move. Here is a quote from the book, “Did he really cause a storm? He’d always thought those stories were just flights of fancy and feats of vast exaggeration. And did the earth really move? Surely not. That would be impossible.”. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can highly recommend. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
This is a fantastic new Universe, and Ash and Cooper are great characters. I find truly interesting the concept of this world, with people who have powers related to the elements, and I'm really looking forward to delving into in with the next books.
In this first one,we are introduced to the main characters. Cooper is a newly graduated architect who has spent his life thinking that there is something wrong with him; Ash is a young man who talks to water and hired Cooper to help him with the rescue of an old and very polluted industrial property.
And, even as Cooper always saw himself as a straight man, he can't deny that there is something between them. And that something keeps growing when Ash, after assuring him that he isn't insane and what he sees is real, begins to train him to help him with his powers. Until a training session gets a bit playful, and they discover that letting themselves go might cause some little issues. Like storms, flooding and earthquakes :P
An excellent story; and Kevin Chandler narration is perfect :)
Interesting beginning to an even more interesting premise. As a whole the story worked but some of it was discombobulated (Disjointed? Disorganized?) like why would Cooper's parents be concerned with and/or want him to be on anti-psychotics when their whole family has some psychic/magic abilities? And why are they so anti-Ash (before they even suspect a romantic relationship)? Also, is this set in a world where everyone knows about those with some elemental sense or is this a secret?
With several plot points that weren't wrapped up, I will give the next one a chance though. (Despite my initial reservations about this whole series sounding like an arc of Avatar.) (The cartoon show, not the movie.)
2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Mason Winters & Olivette Devaux Like a Rock 1) I was thoroughly invested in the characters and felt I walked in their shoes, or I wanted to. I experienced the story unfold through their eyes and the authors moved me to feel emotions as if I were right there. I can' t praise these books too highly. I was disappointed to finish this book. I want to read more by the authors. I'd like more set in this world and more about these characters. For me, the one criticism is that I would have liked more detail within each book. These books could have been twice as long, padded with more details about the characters and the settings. It's a credit to the writers that I just wanted to dwell for longer in each scene.
Interesting. I'd like to read more in the world. I didn't get why Cooper's parents would let him think he was crazy and take anti-psychotics meds. Why would Cooper even think that, when he knew his father had some sort of powers also. I was surprised by how many people had some sort of elemental powers, and yet it seemed in the beginning it was a very rare thing.
A great read. Though I found it hard to get into at first when I got it I was hooked. Cooper and ash are loveable end who find each other when the really need to. There are elements (hehehe) that where initially hard to get to terms with and also a few aspects of the story line that did not totally add up , such as coopers parents understanding of him and reticence about ash. But looking to hear more about these two hot men and how they grow together and reach their full potential.
3.5 Above average m/m story about elementals: Ash is connected to water and Cooper to earth, even though Cooper is untrained, and in fact his gift procured him more troubles than else till he meets Ash. I would read the second book in the Disorderly Elements series, after I'll tackle my TBR mountain...
This was dull, this went nowhere. The writing was good; but this was DULL. Like really, really dull. Real rating 1.5 stars (just) so has been rounded up to 2 stars
I received an ARC of the book 'Love Magik Glow' and this was included in the anthology.
I loved this romantic tale of a sea god and the human he 'built an island for.' This lovely story with several twists and turns is a must-read for those who crave the escapism of fantasy.
