First of all, I adore the Mallicks, so for me, this is another amazing installment to the fantastic five (there are 5 gorgeous, complex Mallick brothers in total). The Mallicks are a close family who run a number of legitimate businesses in Navesink Bank, but who also are notorious loansharks. Ryan is a serious workaholic who takes care of most of the business side, like doing all of the paperwork and keeping the books. He is also the one who pays the first "pay up" visit to clients who use the Mallick's loansharking services. Occasionally, those visits entail violence, which account for the callouses and scars on his hands, those telltale signs that don't quite fit with the hot as sin, expensive, tailored suits he wears on a daily basis.
Ryan lives down the hall from a reclusive tenant who he had not laid eyes on since she moved in over a year prior. Her packages are delivered to her doorstep (unlike his, which are either left at the front reception desk or worse, back at the post office), but she never seems to actually step foot outside of her apartment. One day, though, Ryan returns a bit early from work to find a couple of dodgy guys knocking on her door. Noticing her uncomfortable body language as the two known drug dealers enter her place, Ryan catches his first glimpse of the elusive Dusty, and that one look is enough to pique his interest in a huge way. She's drop dead gorgeous, and he can't get her out of his mind. As it turns out, Dusty has acute agoraphobia and hasn't been able to leave her apartment in months. She tries daily to unlock her door and walk out, which invariably results in a panic attack and a hasty retreat to a soothing bath to calm herself down. When the carbon monoxide alarm in the building starts going off one night, Ryan rushes out of his place to find her hovering anxiously at her doorway. Realizing that she cannot physically make herself leave, even in the face of risk of death, Ryan hoists her over his shoulder and bundles them down the stairs to the safety of his car. Together they face down her phobia, but as it turns out, that's the least of her problems: Dusty's involvement with the dodgy guys lands her in serious hot water, and not of the soothing bath kind.
Jessica Gadziala weaves a great tale - it is full of action and excitement (both dangerous and romantic), and she describes in heart-thumping detail the way Dusty feels when faced with the challenge of having to leave her apartment, which has been her safe place for many months. The chemistry between Ryan and Dusty is immediate and feels true, plus the way the Mallick family interact (including two of the brothers' partners, Fee and Lea) is warm, touching and often totally hilarious.
Another huge winner!
