Man Walks into a Bar: A Trio of Short Stories

Rate this book
Three spicy-sweet stories of unexpected encounters that turn into something more…

Insta-lust. Secret attractions. Boozy bar hookups. They're all here in a trio of contemporary m/m romances perfect for a night in.

New Yorker Jake Winthrop gets nailed for speeding along the rural back roads of eastern North Carolina. But when he again encounters Landry Blue, the hot-as-hell trooper who tagged him, at the local watering hole, let’s just say the lawman has more on his mind than keeping the peace. Once Jake gets a taste of Blue’s brand of Southern hospitality, he starts wanting more. Can Jake convince Blue to give their relationship a shot? Or does Blue want Jake to keep on driving, right out of his life?

Living in a small town meant that Bo Hinkle had to put up with childhood nemesis, Hank Womack, his whole life. But when Womack steals the Hinkle family’s championship chili recipe and uses it to win the village’s famous chili cookoff contest for himself, the line between sort-of-kind-of-hot-asshat and downright shady has been crossed. After a lifetime of rivalry, Bo vows teach Womack a lesson he won’t forget.

Garrett Ziegler’s life was upended when a workplace romance derailed a promising career in finance. So it’s just Garrett’s luck when he learns the cute Los Angeles hipster he hooked up with for a mindblowing one-night-stand turns out to be the founder of a private equity firm, and said firm was in the final stages of interviewing Garrett for his dream job. Garrett has to convince venture capitalist Anthony Sendejo that their encounter was a random accident, and that Garrett’s romantic history wasn’t repeating itself. Trouble is, Tony isn’t convinced. And Garrett’s words ring hollow because as tempting as the job is, Tony is even more enticing. Is Garrett about to screw up his life again because he slept with the boss?

A 42,500 word collection. Each spicy story contains adult matters and are intended for mature audiences.

All three of these stories were entertaining, each one had something I really enjoyed. I though the second story about the chili cook-off was so clever, I just wish it would have been more complete, she could have done so much more with it. I rounded up because overall, it was a good time.

A man walks into a bar ... and in Lissa Ford's novella of three short stories meets a sexy North Carolina Trooper, a tall ginger with a buff bod, and a bearded hipster in flannel.

Jake's Story - Traveling to a short-term carpentry job, Jake meets North Crolina Trooper Landry Blue and they become fuck buddies for Jake's week in town. The sex is very primal dirty sexy with a backdrop of Carolina humidity and the slow pace of a small southern town. Ultimately very sweet and a well-deserved HFN/HEA for those two down-to-earth guys. 4 flames and 4 stars.

Bo’s Story - Set in upstate New York with the backdrop of a small town Chili Cookoff, Bo's story is all kinds of sweet and peppery. Bo and Hank Womack grew up together, but Bo despises Hank and his "championship" chili recipe which Bo just knows is stolen from Bo's grandma. But all it takes to make a good chili (and relationship) is a little spice, a secret ingredient or two (“My meat is always tender and juicy.” Womack leaned over, murmuring for Bo’s ears alone. “Especially the tip.”) and enough time for everything to develop into something wonderful. 1 flames and 4 stars.

Garrett’s Story - Set in LA, bearded hipster in flannel meets reformed man slut trying to restart his career after sleeping with the CFO ... while dating the CEO ... and losing his investment banking job. After incredibly hot sex with a one-night-stand on a penthouse suite balcony, Garrett turns up for the interview, only to learn he apparently needs a refreshing course in two very important lessons: Don’t shit where you eat. And never, ever, date the boss. Unlike the other two stories, we only get one POV (Garrett) here and their romance doesn't feel as emotional. 3 flames and 3 stars.

This is a fun triology to read - each story has a different slant on a familiar situation and although brief, the stories feel complete. Jake's Story was my favorite, with Bo's Story a close second. Garrett's Story lowered the curve a bit, but no worries. Read this book - I think you'll enjoy it!

Ch. 1 Five Stars! Marvelous little story with rich characters and atmosphere. I loved Jake, the New Yorker that traveled south for carpentry and construction work. He gets nabbed for speeding through a barely-a-spot-on-the-map small town by Trooper Blue and then meets him again at the local diner. Looks are exchanged, subtle clues given and a hot one night stand turns into a week, as Jake gets kept at his temporary job. Lissa Ford did a fantastic job of building their connection and completely credible backstories. Ends with a very strong HFN that gives plenty of hope that's its an HEA.

Ch. 2 Four stars. This wasn't quite as satisfying as the first. Again, it was richly characterized, including secondary characters. It was rife with small-town flavor, as Bo and Hank, Bo's long time, perennial nemesis, face off in a chili competition. It also featured decent secondary characters. There are several flashbacks to their history throughout the story. The ending was less than satisfactory to me, however. The change from perceived enemies to prospective lovers was fast and I didn't quite grasp Hank's motive in joining the cookoff. The final flashback was intriguing but puzzled me more about the reason for their animosity, at least on Bo's side. We didn't get the payoff of any intimacy, either physical or emotional, either.

Ch 3 Three and a half stars. It's a fun trope; going to a job interview and finding out the boss is last nights hookup. It does take a different twist from the norm, since Lissa doesn't take the usual direction of workplace shenanigans. It's a fairly realistic scenario as a solution for executive level careers, especially when one of them has a checkered past. It ended though, without any relationship build at all. It felt like only a beginning and no middle or end.

I will admit that short stories are not my preferred reading choice, so perhaps it affects my perceptions. They were excellently written stories, as far as well-rounded characters that fit within the length of the tale. The third story was one I felt was most underdeveloped even as a short and I would have preferred showing more of an actual connection, beyond their initial meeting. I do admire Lissa Ford's skill with narrative immensely and I wouldn't mind seeing any of these developed into full blown novels. That said, they were a departure from previous books Lissa has written and an excellent light read. I'm going to look forward to more of Bait and the Doubleback series!

3.5 stars rounded up because BLUE AND JAKE!

When I saw one pop-up on Goodreads I thought:
Oh, sounds like 3 one-night-stand stories. Pretty much porn with no emotion. I think I'll pass.

But then I noticed it was written by Lissa Ford. I love her work so I took a chance and I am SO GLAD I did. The first story, Jake and Blue, was a spectacular 5 star read for me. (And HELLO COVER!)

Jake’s Story
Two men, honest, hard-working and good down to their toes. Definitely book-boyfriend material! And Blue and Jake did not disappoint.

Hot sex, good deeds, lots of emotion and plenty of passion. HFN, but I have no doubt these boys her their HEA. 5 stars.

Bo’s Story
Hank and Bo have been dancing around each other their entire lives. Told from Bo POV, he considers Hank an annoying meathead and new rival for his yearly trophy at the Crockett Chili Cook-off.

A bit of enemies-to-lovers, Bo was whiny and irritating, but the flashbacks with Hank were sweet and told a lot about their budding attraction.

No sex in this one, but still a sweet HFN, with HEA on Bo's mind in the end. 3 stars.

Garrett’s Story
This is the story of a casual hookup between two people who end up being boss and employee, before Garret knows Tony is the owner of the company he is applying at. The hookup sex was blisteringly hot but I was very disappointed in the relationship the two had after they realized they would be working together. The emotions weren't there and since this one was from Garrett's POV, we had no idea what was in Tony's head.

We do get a HFN, but I didn't get the sense of a HEA or any passion. This one could have been great but was merely OK. 3 stars.

My Final Thoughts
Read this story, if only for Blue and Jake. It was fantastic and worth the price of the entire book.

4 stars for the first story, and 3 stars for the other two. I love Lissa Ford's writing and the first story is sexy as hell. I just wish the endings weren't tentative HFNs.

Jake’s Story
Jacoby (Jake) Winthrop is a carpenter trying to make ends meet. He’s driving to a job site when he is stopped for speeding. Office Landry Blue tickets him and allows Jake to go his way. Jake is late and upon arriving he knows he won’t be invited to work another day. But he’s a hard worker and his employer for the day sees it and makes him an offer to stay for a week. After a day of hard work Jake frequents the only great affordable establishment to eat at. That’s where an off duty Landry approaches him.

Bo’s story
Bo Hinkle and Mack Womack have been life time nemesis, well at least that’s how Bo has always seen it. But Mack takes it a little too far when he steals Bo’s family recipe for prize winning chili. Bo is more than ready to take him down with his new take on the family recipe.

Garret’s story
Garret Ziegler is a pariah in the private financial sector. After one bad mistake, he’s trying to build up his reputation in the industry again. The night before a job interview, Garret decides to go to a club and just relax. He meets a guy and they have a wonderful night. All goes to hell, when the CEO of the company, Tony or Anthony Sendejo, walks into the meeting the next day and Garret sees it’s his one night stand.

I have to admit when I received the email with a brief vague description from the author I think I was expecting more erotica than romance stories. I’m glad it turned out to be so much more. I enjoyed getting to know each character in their respective story and being an outsider looking in to the emotional terminal they each experienced. For short stories I didn’t expect to fall in love with the characters and get so invested in their wellbeing. In both, Jake and Landry and Garret and Tony’s case my heart hurt because there was a hiccup in their blooming relationship which could have actually killed any development. I literally wanted to shake each character in hopes they would get their heads on straight. Garret’s situation though was the one that really really kicked me in the heart and anyone who reads it will know why (sorry no spoiler here from me).
Bo’s story was the most frustrating of all three stories. Mack really rubbed me the wrong way for half the read, he came off to arrogant and acted like a major jerk. The flashbacks into Bo and Mack’s lives and interactions were very telling. Near the end I didn’t hold as much animosity towards him as I did at the start. Mack’s bullying was a touch too violent and childish for me, even though it was reasoned out why.

An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

The first story I liked, the second story didn't interest me, and the third story was okay.

The first story took me some getting used to because the writing was very "southern" or "country" and so it was hard to take the story seriously at first when one of the MCs called one singular person "ya'll". After getting used to it, I enjoyed the story. This was a short book as is, but the story was even shorter. So we didn't get too much backstory or depth, but I ended up rooting for them just the same.

The third story was interesting. Definitely a very HFN, not really a romance at all, more sex? Still, the storyline was interesting enough.

I say give this anthology a shot if you don't HAVE to have HEA, I was truly pleasantly surprised by it.

I loved the three stories. They were fun and sexy. Definite re-read in the future. The MCs were all adorable in their own way, even Mack the jerk. Very fun reads!

Favorite quotes:
" 'Sometimes it only takes one person to change a whole life.' "
" 'You just gotta be brave enough to make the change.' "
" 'Eff off, Creepazoid.' "
" 'You get an imaginary gold star for pointing out the obvious.' "

I received the first story story 'Bo's Story' as a free gift from the author. It was really sweet, yet snarly, in just the right places. Especially when she took us back to two little boys at a day care center. One character was totally oblivious to the clumsy advances of the other. Who knew what a little chili could do to spice up a romance! I'll definitely be reading other selections by this author, since every other one has been just as good! A wonderful light hearted read with just a little angst.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The first story was not my favorite. The dialogue seemed awkward, and as someone who has lived in North Carolina for 22 years, the attempt at "southern speak" fell flat. However, I did enjoy the characters and their overall story. The second story was my favorite. Time hopping, when done right, adds an extra layer to a story and characters, and it was done right here! The third story was also wonderful! I would enjoy a full length novel about Garrett and Tony! Lissa Ford is one of my favorite authors and she didn't disappoint!

This is a collection of short stories about three men who encounter their better half in bars. The stories are very different, but each one likeable in its own way.

Jake's Story
Jake Winthrop moved from NYS to North Carolina looking for better working prospective and, so far, his situation has not improved. Accepting a shitty job in a chicken farm seems to be his last resource, but things start badly when gets a ticket for speeding thanks to State Trooper Landry Blue. Surprisingly, a well-done job and a not-so-casual encounter in a bar can change his luck. Soon, he finds himself willing to give Landry a chance but… Will Landry take the chance at them?
This was really hot, with likeable characters who seem to share an intense sexual chemistry. There is a lot of sex, some anguish and a sweet HEA. Enjoyable
3.5 stars

Bo's Story
Bo Hinkle and Hank Womak have been at each other's necks since childhood. Bo's dislike for Hank reaches an unprecedented level when Hank wins the Annual Chilli Cookoff Competition. But Hank's reasons for joining the competition are not what Bo was expecting…
This was my favourite of the three. Enemies to lovers is one of my favourite tropes, and this one is really well-delivered. I enjoyed the way we keep going back and forth in time, getting glimpses of past confrontations. Utterly enjoyable
4 stars

Garrett's Story
Garrett Ziegler's mistake of getting involved with his boss ruined his professional career in the past. It's taken some time, but he seems to be facing better prospectives. Although a random hookup in a bar the night before the definitive interview may prove fatal when Garrett realises he's made the same mistake twice.
Another cute story, this was my less favourite one because Garrett's cynical attitude was not of my liking at the beginning.
