Stranger in the Mist

Buried Secrets

It was utterly impossible, yet Lynne Delevan knew this dark stranger - this man she'd never met - who stood at the door of her isolated mountain house. Then, as Jarrett Taylor's unreadable eyes stared into hers, she was swept into memories of passion that had never been, experiences she'd never lived through....

In the blink of an eye, sensation overtook her, and Lynne found herself in a nightgown she didn't own, having thoughts that couldn't be hers. And seductive Jarrett was inextricably part of the mystery.

A mystery that made her ask: would she be left at the mercy of a stranger's desires - a man she'd loved forever in the mist of her mind...?

From Harlequin.com Author Bio

The first time Leona (Lee) Karr saw her words in print was in the sixth grade when she won an essay contest and her entry was published in the city newspaper. That same thrill, always tinged with a little surprise, is still there after over 30 published books.

Although she has written mysteries, historical romances, gothics, and paranormal romances, her favorite genre is romantic suspense, and her bookshelves are filled with tales of mysterious heroes and courageous heroines caught up in the excitement of an intrigue.

A native of Colorado, she has set many of her books in the majestic Rocky Mountains near her home. Graduating from the University of Colorado with a B.A., and from the University of Northern Colorado with an M.A. degree, she taught as a reading specialist until her first book was published in 1980. Her books have been translated and published in many foreign countries with over a million of her books reprinted.

After being widowed for five years, she recently married and is living her very own romantic story with her new husband and soul mate. Leona "wheels and deals" from a wheelchair after she was struck with a bout of polio just one year before the vaccine was approved for use. She has been blessed with children and grandchildren.

She has been on the Waldenbooks bestseller List, nominated by Romantic Times for Best Romantic Saga, and Best Gothic Author. She has been honored as the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer of the Year, and has received Colorado's Romance Writer of the Year Award. She is a presenter at numerous writing conferences and has taught college courses in creative writing.

She writes five hours a day, happily chasing new stories of love, danger, and happiness. She is delighted when readers confess that her books kept them up half of the night reading.

1.8 stars rounded up to 2 because a character used the word "crapola". Our heroine was also described as having a "sexist's smile" after saying she takes her dates to restaurants or something, which was a very odd choice of words.
This is more of a haunted house mystery than a gothic, and it could've been so much better than it was.
Our heroine is Lynne Delevan, a Chicago social worker who does a one month home swap with a lady in a small Colorado mountain town. A handsome Santa Fe man named Jarrett Taylor shows up the day after Lynne arrives and invites himself to stay because he heard it was a bed and breakfast (which it was, but back in the 60s). Lynne starts having strange visions of the house's past inhabitants, and of course there are also confusing feelings for Jarrett himself. There's an abandoned ski resort, some unwelcoming locals and a gruff newspaper editor who, like nearly everyone else in this book, may know more than he lets on. All of this should have made for a very engaging story but about 60-70 percent of the way in, I felt like the action (not that there was much of any) had just stalled. I skimmed through to the end rather than keep slogging though more of the usual scenes of Lynne having a vision or seeing a ghost, dissolving into a puddle of fear, and Jarrett finding her and urging her to tell him what's wrong, with her refusing and keeping it to herself. I would've much rather read about the two of them teaming up to tackle the mystery and do some serious investigative work. Instead it felt like we were just waiting for the mystery to solve itself half the time.

Wow, this one was good! I won't give any details and give anything away; I'll just strongly suggest that you read it! I'll only add that the villain of this story was HORRIBLE and the comeuppance took way too long!

Some might think the story's too far-fetched, but whatever the case, it still keeps you turning pages.

I would have given this another star, but one thing bothered me. Two people were collateral damage and that was really sad. I had thought they had something to do with the story but unfortunately, they were innocent victims caught in the crossfire, and that was unfair.

Other than that, no complaints.
