Exiled and on the run from his pack with his twin cubs, Linus Shepherd has his hands full. After a string of odd jobs, his luck changes the day he goes on an interview at Graystone Stonemasonry. Given the opportunity to build a stable home for his family, the only threat he has to face is his attraction to a six-foot-nine god chiseled from obsidian who just happens to be his boss.

Dean Graystone enjoyed his simple life. His stonemasonry business and the safe haven for supernaturals he had helped to found were both thriving. The day that he hired Linus, he knew there was something unique about the handsome red wolf. That Linus is so dedicated to the care of his cubs more than impresses him. It fascinates him.

So.....I think I liked the original better. I gave the original story five stars. I don't know if it's because I kind of already knew the story, even though I don't remember the details of exactly what happened, but I felt the expansion of the story caused it to drag, and lose the beauty that defined the romantic relationship. It was just kind of 'there'. Instead of Linus and Dean's courtship being 'slow burn', it seemed to take forever. The joy I felt over their relationship in the original novella got bogged down by all this minutiae that kept losing me. I was literally skipping over paragraphs to get to the next thing. The thing I love about this author is her world building, that she takes her time to build stories brick by brick, but I just didn't get that feeling here. I just felt like the story was overly long. I still love the characters; I still love the kids. The love just isn't as sharply pronounced as it was for the short story. If I hadn't already read the original story, and known the characters, I might have bailed about halfway. I don't know what else to say.

This is my review of the original short story. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm off to re-read Love Stoned, which is also very slow burn, but which I loved.

dnf. Very poor editing. A thesaurus may have been terribly abused during the writing of this book.

I adore Mya. Her stories are absolutely perfect. I am ALWAYS left completely satisfied. Her gargoyle/shifter pairings are always fun. The courting between Dean and Linus was wonderfully written. The pacing of the relationship progression really worked. And the slow burn of finally getting together, sexy as hell. I will admit that this got a bit wordy at times, but my enjoyment of the characters and the world building helped me to keep on keeping on.. All in all this is exactly what I've come to expect from Mya's M/M novels: A great story and nicely written sexy times.

Setting: Northern US

Linus: On-the-run Alpha wolf trying to give his twin cubs a chance at a good life. Respectable, honorable, children always come first.
Dean: Alpha in every way. Owner of a large business, protector of the area's supernaturals.

I'll start off with the good: The story was unique. I'm always looking for a good mm paranormal romance that's not a novella. The character development was good, the interactions between the MC kept my interest, and I actually enjoyed Dean and Linus. I REALLY enjoyed the story between Linus and his children. I felt these relationships were more developed than the actual relationship of the MC.

The bad: I didn't feel a great connection between the MC. The words were there. The "you mean so much to me" was there. But I didn't FEEL it. Not like I did with Linus and his kids. In addition, I felt the world building could have been better. The author had such a wonderful chance to really develop and expand on the different types of characters. She didn't need to go into everyone's story, obviously. That would have been distracting. But Ms. Lairis could have been a little more "colorful" in her world.

The ugly: Where the hell was a proof reader?? Misspellings, inappropriate placement of punctuation, repetitive words...etc.. all OVER the place. Occasional oops, yes. But it was so distracting. I had to re-read many sentences just to understand what the author was trying to say.
I'm not an author. But I am an avid reader as many people are. As an author, you must remember you are not just writing a story to a family member or friend. You have the potential for a LARGE audience! Your words, your stories, your professionalism is vital to you being successful. If you took the time to write a good story, take the TIME TO PROOFREAD IT. It makes all the difference. This could have been a 4 or 5 star book. Ms. Lairis has great potential. Just some constructive criticism.

Perfection!!! I loved this one. I got everything I'd expected out of it, including my fight scene and my HEA. Dean and Linus are yumlicious and, once again, the author weaves a complex push-pull dynamic between them in terms of dominance and submission. Very well done. Loved the banter between the characters, love that they took their time getting physical and that Dean put the kids up to hassle Linus into asking him to dinner. This author always takes the time to realistically build her worlds and I appreciate that.

Re Linus as an alpha, I will say that he didn't strike me as one in the beginning. Maybe it was because of the way he kept his head bowed during his job interview, and the way he skulked around Dean in the beginning. He WAS desperate for the job though, and DID have his whole life turned upside down so.... but still, I wasn't really getting the alpha vibes until they started acting on their attraction to each other.

Loved the family scenes with the kids and Dean realizing that this was what he wanted. Loved.Dean.period. That is all.

Little discrepancy. In the beginning we're told that Linus is 6'2 and Dean is 6'6 but then later on we're told Dean is almost a foot taller than Linus. Might be an error, or did I misread? I'm too lazy to go back to check. Gotta press on to more of this author's books!

All in all, I LOVED THIS BOOK. It's 98 pages but packs a wollop. You will not be left wanting.

The cubs were adorable and was one half of the reason that I liked this so much. This shifter world is a little different than most that I have read. The werewolf actually felt "wolfy". The cubs were not like children you typically see depicted in stories like this. Linus tries so hard and even though he is abrasive, I couldn't help but like him when he walked into the house and became a Dad.

Somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars...

I skipped large parts here and there because it didn't keep up my interest. The kids, Selphie and Jack, were simple brats, I didn't find them adorable at all. Sometimes they didn't act like 9yo children...

The whole budding attraction between Linus and Dean? On the hand hand, they instantaneously felt something towards each other... On the other hand, I've reached around 30% and nothing happened yet! (Except for random sex with someone else...)

The worst thing was, however, the lack of editing and, probably, any proofreading. It was tiring to see mistaken words, names and the lack (or surplus) of commas...

Sorry, but apparently this book was not for me :(

Такааая фигня. Ну еле дочитала.
- не люблю долгие описания секса с второстепенными персонажами (Хуан);
- Линиус слабак и всем об этом рассказывает;
- почему он сразу не стал драться с Тимоти, если настолько сильнее его, дал себя унижать и насиловать?
- окончание не совсем хэппи энд. Хотя нормально.

What to say? I can tell that it was not for me. Somehow how the story plot began, the reason behind it and the whole story plot developing was not for me. So ....

Needs some polishing, but overall it's a good read :)

***3.5 stars***

Even though this book still needs a lot polishing, I really did enjoy it. I liked the author description of how the characters changed into their supernatural counterparts while in the mist of passion. Whilst the scenes itself weren't extremely detailed, the way the author describes each character transforming into their beast was very intriguing and I felt like it added to the scene.

It is mentioned in the story that wolves do not live as long as gargoyles, therefore my hope is by them being mates it then extends Linus's life. Oh, and regarding the whole mating ordeal, on page it didn't seem complete so my assumption is that it happened behind the scenes.

All in all, I really did like the story and I really did like the ending and how everyone got their HEA and/or new beginnings. It would have been a solid four stars for me if it weren't for all the editing that is needed.

Love isn't a scorecard...

I seriously wasn't ready to fall deeply in love with these two men. The passion surrounding them, be it a father's protection or a guardians open door explodes...encasing every reader. Linus and Dean deserved their coming together. I don't expect their future to be sunshine and rainbows, but together there will be many tomorrow's.

Oldie just got better

I read this in its original version years ago and loved it. When I stumbled up on this new, improved, expanded version I found I love it even more. Mya just reminded me why I loved her books and its time to get back into them. Great story and worth the 5 🌠

A shifter romance with some unusual creatures thrown into the mix. The storyline is good, but the whole thing was dragging a lot and took me more than three days to finish. Would have been so much better if the initial chapters were cut short.

This was a longer than expected novel but it was really fun packed with danger, action, lore and love. Really enjoyed it even if it took awhile to read :)

More Miss Than Hit

This was the first time I read something from this author. I liked the plotline. I thought the characters were not one dimensional, that they were not the typical alpha males. I liked that their relationship took months to develop.

What I didn't like was having to figure out what the author was saying because the editing was HORRIBLE.

When the editing is that bad I usually don't finish reading much less write a review, but I did like the story.

Not for me

2 stars
Think this one is just me, as I know others who have loved this one.
The editing was poor. Sentences with missing or incorrect words had me going back over what was there to try and understand what the author was trying to say.
It was a long book and unfortunately as I didn't connect to either character I was bored most of the way through, only my stubbornness had me finishing this one.

Loved it!

Well written with plenty of romance, suspense, and action. Gargoyles are truly underappreciated. I will definitely read more by this author.

Interesting mix of paranormal and contemporary themes ... Single dad with a lot on his shoulders falls for his new boss. But they happen to be supernatural creatures. I liked the unique take on shifters. But the story felt a bit aimless too in parts. Good with potential. Even a basic edit for common errors would have improved the book.

A fresh take on shifters, action packed and romantic.

There are a few flaws in the editing, but this is some of the most original material I've read in the m\m genre in a very long time! I love Dean, the big strong protector, and the fierce, passionate werewolf who is actually hairy for once is a nice touch too! Hot, edgy, and original! My only question is....doesn't that sand get into inconvenient places??? A great read!

Rating: 4 stars. I really liked this book of the Wolf and the Gargoyle. I loved that it took it's time to flesh out the characters. It wasn't a short wham bam instalove story at all. The two MCs took their time to get together. I thought that especially important since there were kids involved. The book did need a good editor. It wasn't bad enough that I didn't enjoy the story but it did take me out of the story a time or two. If it wasn't for that, I would have scored it even higher. I would definitely read another story set in this world.

This was a very interesting read. The book starts with Linus running for his children's lives. He is a defeated alpha and the new alpha wants to kill off his line. Linus runs. Eventually Linus finds a job working as a stonemason for Dean. Linus can't help but be attracted to his boss. Dean doesn't seem to like Linus though. Watching poor Linus deal with single parenthood and all it entails plus the fact that they are werewolves makes you feel for the poor guy. He can't even get laid because his kids wander off when he tries. Dean is a much more controlled character. He seems to have a plan and the patience to stick with it. This was a free read and as such expect editing issues but even in a raw form it was quite a fun read:)

Reading a Book by Mya Lairis is Joy!

As one of my favorite authors, she only disappoints me by not publishing books more often. That being said, this book was such fun to read and has always been a book I return to a lot. Reading the extended, revised story made my Saturday afternoon!
I'm not sure about the spelling/ editing errors the other reviewers are going on about but I guess I might have enjoyed this book too much to take notice.
I would definitely recommend this and any book by Mya Lairis, I mean who else writes of a such an intriguing paranormal world? Plus gargoyles! Need I say more?
