Christin & Mézières' kind-of encyclopedia to the world Valérian and Laureline. This is the kind of thing that if you enjoy the graphic novel series, you'll likely enjoy this book, but there's really no point in reading it unless you have read at least some of the albums.
There are at least two somewhat different versions of the book, which Goodreads lists simply as different editions of the same work. The original version, published in French in 1991, came with a white cover and (naturally) covered the series only up to that point in time. This work was then expanded into a new version, including material from the later albums, in 2016. This 2016 version (and apparently its translations) have a different, black-dominated cover. Most of the additions, it must be said, are slightly less well done than the original book; whereas the artwork for the 1991 version was specifically made for that book, the majority of the art in the added bits for the 2016 version have simply been lifted directly from the relevant albums. Similarly, the added text – especially in the part about The Great Void in the end – really doesn't live up to the humorous encyclopedic tone of the rest.
I'm glad this book exists, but especially the 2016 version (which I more recently read) feels like it could have been done better.
Tämä oli parempi lopetus saagalle. Luin tämän komean atlaksen vasta koko sarjan jälkeen. Parempi muisteluteoksena kuin sarjan päättänyt muistoja tulevaisuuksista.
It's a lexicon of the most important creatures and beings in the Linda and Valentin universe, interspersed with short two-page stories of them talking or reminiscing about the different species they have encountered through the years. I got a little bit confused about the chronology, since this lexicon was originally published before the series was finished so for instance it makes a note of the final fate of Kistna, which directly contradict a later story. On the other hand, I read a newer edition, which contains some musings on the fate of Galaxity which I don't think was in the first edition and which relates to some of the later stories, but it does not go all the way up to the final story. Is it really important? I don't know, maybe not.
It's a neat collection of some of the fascinating species that the writer and artist came up with, but it doesn't tell you a lot that you didn't get from reading the comic, except for some made-up technical details about how the different creatures work. It's pretty cool, but not an absolute must-have.
