We all know about the failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944, but what if there was another plot even before that? This is the premise of Owen Sela's wartime thriller set in 1940. A group of German officers plot to kill the Fuhrer just as Operation Sea Lion, his plan to invade England is suspended. The plot's leader Paul Van Osten agrees with an American Max Schroeder that President Franklin Roosevelt should be killed in exchange. The belief is that Roosevelt is determined to take neutral America into war. The Americans send an intelligence agent David Stannard to help the Germans. Roosevelt is unaware that there is also a plot to kill him.

This is a fascinating tale of speculative fiction. You know that both plans did not succeed but you are still captivated by how this story plays out. The hero of the story is David Stannard, a tough and resourceful operative, who is also a veteran of the Spanish Civil War. There are lots of cameos of real historical figures like J Edgar Hoover, Herman Goering and FDR himself.

This is a great thriller is you love spy thrillers, war time adventures and historical fiction.

They were running out of ideas for World War II novels back in the Seventies, so Owen Sela came up with one of the zaniest yet. When the fighting stalls American and German intelligence officers devise a a plan to exchange assassinations and end the war in a truce. A goofball follower of the late Senator Huey Long will finish off Franklin Roosevelt while the Germans will deal with Adolf Hitler. SPOILER: Neither of these leaders actually dies in the novel. Sela obviously wanted to imitate Frederick Forsyeth in THE DAY OF THE JACKAL and failed miserably. For fans of Nazi pulp fiction only.
