manover MAN-oh-ver | noun 1: a makeover of one’s masculinity Example: “J.D. is such a metrosexual that, at this point, our only option is a manover.” –Zack & Rory Adderack
J.D.’s got a problem. He’s an MMA fighter who’s lost his belt, his honor, the mobility in his shoulder, and the sexist pigs he’s been mooching off of have just gone insane… but, that’s not the problem. The problem is about five foot five, with big brown eyes, and serves coffee next door. The problem talks sh*t when they play video games, and is at least an 8/10 on the Hot Crazy Matrix… but is no unicorn (the problem believes in Bigfoot). Further frustrating our hapless hero, the problem wants to run her hands allll over him, but doesn’t believe in happy endings. Follow along as J.D. tackles his problem, sees it tied to a tree, and gets busy trying to nail down a solution in a boat, and with a goat, here, there, and frankly, everywhere. The biggest barrier to J.D. licking his problem on a more permanent basis? His jackass siblings just drove him to buy a ticket home…
In Bush, Alaska, rivers are roads, subdivisions only exist in a surveyor’s imagination, and rules are for sissies. Be catapulted into a land where men in fur hats drag women around by the hair, and your choices determine whether you star in a fairy orgy, or are crushed to death by your 55-inch TV. Roll on the floor laughing with this steamy, twisted, ridiculous romantic comedy.
I’m an indie author who’ll take romance over horror, entertaining over plausible, informal over straight-laced (unless those laces are being undone by one of my characters), and steamy over G-rated every day of the week.
This book is H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! Hapless and injured MMA champion J.D. is the younger brother of Zack and Rory Adderack. We read about the three of them (well, mainly Zack and Rory) torturing their youngest sibling, sister Helly, in Two Cabins, One Lake and neighbor Suzy in Two Captains, One Chair (also books that will tickle your funny bone). Poor J.D. is the newest project, and his brothers are working hard to get him out of his funk. Once they catch him eyeing the cute new barista, Thea, he might as well forget having any shot at a normal dating experience with those two around. These two are scheming turds, but the total life of the party in this book. As J.D. notes, "I didn't even want to imagine the reel that was running behind his [Zack's] eyes."
With J.D. an MMA fighter and Thea a pretty college co-ed with auburn hair, there is a lot of mutual physical admiration going on in this story. Shaye Marlowe fills her book with plenty of hot times, and these two are no exception, especially since J.D.'s shoulder injury gives Thea all kinds of opportunities to put her physical-therapist-in-training hands all over his sculpted physique. However, the emotional groundwork is laid pretty well, and the hot kisses set the stage for later.
Told in dual first person POV, the story flits between the two romantic leads. I like how J.D.'s internal thoughts are quickly consumed by Thea, but even in his head he isn't willing to contemplate much about his physical limitations or his future in the octagon cage. In fact, J.D. is more the heart and soul of this story than Thea. The boy has layers, but in typical guy fashion he doesn't let it hang out there too much.
One aside is that I thought the title and the blurb to this book were confusing. Given this is a Shaye Marlow book, I thought it might mean a menage, but thankfully not. The second brute is like a manipulative bad penny who keeps popping up in J.D.'s life. Even at the end he won't go away. And as regards the blurb, have no fear, the action and emotions and humor are easy to follow. I lost track of how many times I laughed out loud.
I have been waiting, rather impatiently I might add, for this book to come out. After devouring the first two in the series, not only once but 3 times, I personally contacted the author all but begging for her to continue the series. I would like to interject here to say that before this, I had never personally contacted an author on any media in any way because I was so enamored with their work. There are no words for the happiness I felt when she told me she was working on JD’s story.
Not only am I in love with everything that is Marlow’s Alaskan romance series, but JD is hands down my favorite of Helly’s brother. This story is everything I wanted and more from both Marlow and the continuation of her series. It has her trademark humor as well as her delicious- and creative - sex scenes.
While it isn’t necessary to read the previous in the series, I highly recommend it as it bring a new level of appreciation to this novel. It can be read, and enjoyed, as a standalone. If you are looking a raunchy romance with humor and side dish of mystery you didn’t know you needed, I highly recommend this series.
I’ve been enjoying this series; however, from the beginning I’ve thought it was pretty sexist. As a country boy myself, I know plenty of women who are just as awesome in the woods as men, but these women just come off as helpless half the time. They let the guys be sexist toward them with only mild complaint, and it’s gotten a thousand times worse in this book. JD’s brothers made me want to jab my eyes out, they were so annoying. Not funny—annoying.
I kept reading because I assumed that the misogynistic stuff they were preaching on being a man’s man would be laughed off in the end because they were so over the top. Nope! The women of this Alaskan country town seem perfectly happy to allow men to act like sexist jerks and often concede to it in their minds ( even though they prove themselves to be competent through their occupations and abilities).
Overall, I would love these books if the women would stand up for themselves more and if the men weren’t all stereotypical in their “I’m a big bad macho man” attitudes. It makes the characters seem one dimensional and honestly makes me want to punch them. My grandma taught me to clean a fish and shoot a squirrel. Why are these obviously capable women bowing to the “You were made to be my housewife” mindset of these men? Even though they have jobs, that’s still how the men treat them and how they seem to see themselves. I suggest trying CM Owens’ Wild Ones if you want sexy mountain men, crazy antics (that are funny instead of annoying), and women with actual STRENGTH.
I didn’t hate the book—the Bigfoot plot was entertaining, and I liked that JD didn’t agree with the misogyny AS MUCH as his older brothers, Ed, and Gary seem to—so I am giving it two stars since I was able to get through it. But seriously, the brothers are SO annoying, and don’t expect that to change!
I wasn't sure at first how much I was going to enjoy a whole book about JD, but I actually enjoyed this a lot (probably because Zack and Rory are in it non-stop). The third major character of this book though is Bigfoot, so there's way more shenanigans and ridiculousness in this book, than in the other two books (not complaining about that at all, though!). I think my only grievance with this book was the timeline. Sometimes it made it seem like JD had been living with his brother for months, and other other times only a week or two before he met Thea. Plus JD & Thea go from strangers to strangely in love in about 4 days (exaggerated eye roll inserted here). If the timeline wasn't so ridiculous it wouldn't have been so bad. Oh, and I would 100% read Helly's chose your own adventure book that keeps popping up in this story!
I read the first two books a while ago and somehow forgot about it waiting for this one. My mistake because it truly is one of the best ones out there. Each book is a standalone but the characters all make appearances in them.
If you like over the top antics then be prepared to enjoy this book. I didn't think anything could be funnier than Helly and Gary in the first one. I was wrong. J.D. and Thea were so good together. Add in his crazy brothers and his sister, Helly and her choose an adventure sex story and it took it to a whole new level. Plus there is some hot steamy good times and a great story. I would recommend this entire series -- all of which can be read as standalones.
Hands down one of the best romance novels I've read. I didn't think it possible, but Two Brutes, One Barista is even better than the first two books in this series.
Every girl wants to have her insides go gooey from just one glance. To be swept off her feet and showered with love in the most simplistic of ways. Every girl deserves to experience pure unconditional love.
Get ready to fall and fall hard. Get ready to set new standards are how to love and be loved. Get ready for JD and Thea.
I am so disappointed! The first in this series was amazing. I thought I found a great new author, then book 2 was less than stellar, and book three just missed the boat completely. The drama with the twins was just so silly and stupid, and beyond believable. The characters weren't strong and felt incompletely covered in this novel. I say go back to the fire and character involvement from the first novel and tap into that again.
What a great, fun and hot read! So many wonderful characters beyond the MC's, so many laugh out loud sections and OMG one of the best hot erotica books ever! (Nice erotica? Yes!)
I will read this book again and hopefully will find more just like it.
This is a delightfully quirky unusual book! Loved J.D. and Thea's interactions and banter. Their love story was sweet and very very sensual!!! These books are filled with so many wacky characters and you have no idea what is going to happen next or the direction the storyline is going in.... Each page you turn is an adventure into craziness, laughter or aahhh moments!!!!
Genuinely LOL book. JDs got a long way to go to get over his depression and his brother’s go to extremes to help. And Thea is so accepting of his crazy. I do wish we had learned more about Thea. We aren’t in her POV very often. It’s very much JDs story. But I love travelling this story and seeing all the previous characters be a part of the new romance. And did I mention it’s funny? And the spice is great. Not that full on, but titillating and some raunch.
Poor JD on what happen to him,his 2 crazy brothers trying to help him recover and then meeting his sweetie. All 3 books were funny and I just about fell out of my chair laughing so hard, couldn't put them down , loved all the characters and that they were in all 3 stories. I hope that you write more like theses books.
I'll admit this book started out a little slower than the previous books in the Alaskan romance series, perhaps because we didn't have a lot of information on JD. He generally was the strong and silent type in the background, not as involved in his older brothers shenanigans but certainly watching and learning from them.
Love, love, love. Adorable, engaging, out of control but so enjoyable. The characters are amazing, they blend together so well but keep their individuality. This is a wonderful series.
Got to be a recipe for disaster and cupcakes! JD has a busted wing and is trying to heal, in spite of all the "help" from his toddler-brained brothers. Things go from bad to worse and worser. Fast paced plot and LOTS of sex of course can't go wrong.
Probably something that would be both funny and cute, but I didn’t really like the hero and there were way too much about him and his brothers before the heroine was even introduced.
Zack and Rory are still up to their antics in Two Brutes, One Barista. I liked the friendship and relationship between JD and Thea. I’m curious if there will be more books in this series.
This author writes funny, in a slapstick sort of way. This series is great if you're looking for romance and a laugh with great characters you won't soon forget.
The characters in each of the 3 books are fun, unusual and exciting! All 3 books are an adventure! There is not only hot steamy romance but a fun story. I love all of the characters and their crazy and funny antics! I can't wait for future books!!! Thanks for keeping me thoroughly entertained.
