Poisoned Iris: A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopia

Rate this book
Athens was once the cradle of civilization. Now it’s slowly but surely becoming the tomb of humanity.

The Red Plague, a violent virus that ran rampant decades ago, left its imprint on the planet and the flesh of men. All that remains of the modern world is an endless wasteland of ruins—Erebos—and two cities—Elysion, the obscure island of the Non-Infecteds, which no one knows a thing about, and Tartaros, the crumbling town of the Infecteds, where despair, hatred, violence, and poverty are the operative words.

At the heart of this universe lives Irisya, a sixteen-year-old, Non-Infected girl, recluse in her home to stay safe and relying on her brother, Memphis, for everything.

But then, one day, he disappears without a trace.

Irisya has no choice. To save him, to survive, she will have to brave all the dangers of the outside world.

(I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.)

CHARACTERS

Irisya, the protagonist is a non infected living among the infected. She knows that if her secret comes out, she'd be killed by the hordes of infected. She is scared and worried but throughout the story she is loyal and faces fear in the eye. This was what I liked about her the most. Her love for her brother and subsequently her new friends is what drives her throughout the story.

Gem, Cillian and Irisya's brother Memphis are characters I loved but can't really talk about without giving away aspects of the story. They all played important roles in the story and every character was three dimensional

Gabriel is a little boy and a minor character but captured my heart so wonderfully. He doesn't talk but conveys his feelings through his art. He's misunderstood by many but despite everything he has faced in life, he's a sweet kid with a huge heart. The author has portrayed him so beautifully and he will definitely leave a lasting impression on readers.

PLOT

The plot was complex and I really enjoyed the world building. There were parts when I was confused but things were explained real soon. The world is split in two after The Red Plague - The infected and the non-infected. Irisya and her brother are non-infected living among the infected. They could be killed or worse if the people around them found out who they truly are.

When Memphis goes missing, his sister decides to look for him. The story is about the path that Irisya takes to get back her brother. It is not an easy path and there are adventures and horrors happening on every page.

WRITING

The writing was descriptive but confusing at parts. At times I had to reread certain sentences to understand what was happening. Other than that, I found the writing quite expressive. It was good that any mistakes in writing did not hinder the progression of the story in any manner.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK

- The characters
- The Plot
- The diversity

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK

- The writing at some parts

CONCLUSION

Wonderful and flawed characters who come together to form a complex and intriguing story set in a harsh post-apocalyptic world.

I Loved this book. Irisya is the main character and I will tell you, she is something else. Because of the The Red Plague, a virus that destroyed the world how we know it, there are basically 2 cities: Elysion, where the Non-Infecteds live, and Tartarus, where the Infecteds live, where violence is everywhere. There aren't rumors on this books about what happens in Elysion or how the life is there, all we know is that they have advance technology, so we don't know anything about the city as well and I wish to know more but my guess is that it is a surprise for the sequel. In Tartarus you can also find the clans, and most of the people need to be linked to one to be able to survive. In Elisya’s case, she grew up inside of an apartment, being protected by her brother, but she sees herself being forced to face the violent outside world with no experience on survival. Her character is very well developed and she grows gradually and it's good to see how the story and characters developed equally on this book, giving a perfect balance. I liked the writing style and the vocabulary, as some unusual words were used and helped me to increase my vocabulary as well. Sometimes I caught myself wondering why in the world people would wish death or even worse fate to those who happen to be an non-infected in a city of infected people ? Why so much hatred just because someone is not infected when you are? I caught myself so many times telling myself that didn't make sense, but then I compared with all that is happening these days and thought: yes, unfortunately this could be possible and I have a passage of the book to explain exactly when reality but me. “Things change, evolve, some for better, some for worse.Others still, like human nature, remain the same.Man always needs an enemy, for instance. That's the very reason why you're the enemy for all these people out there. It doesn't matter if you did nothing to them;they need someone to blame for what's going wrong with their lives. The difference, in the end, is the way you define your adversary to justify your hatred or your feeling of injustice and what actions you take toward them. In the past, it was a matter of skin color, nationality, sexual orientation, money, opinions, or even religion. Today, it's a matter of marks or the absence of them on the skin. If it hadn't been that, it'd certainly have been something else. The book seems a little bit long, but this isn't the paces fault, there are too many things being explained regarding the world building, we get to know what happened before the Plague, details about all clans , details about the characters life. I connected well with all characters. I definitely plan to read the sequel and recommend this book.

Thank you to the author, Cindy Mezni, and Olivia (who organizes the review chain) for gifting me with a copy of Poisoned Iris in exchange for an honest review!

Sadly, this book just wasn't my cup of tea.  It started out all right and I kept waiting for some spark to come in but I just couldn't become invested.  Let me explain why:

1.  The characters.  The author did a great job of keeping the character development balanced with the action and plot.  However, there were moments all of the time that I was left baffled by the actions of the characters.  They were entirely out of character or incredibly ridiculous.  They would get angry over the tiny things or they would do things without any explanation and didn't make sense in the long run.  The author would work so hard to build up the personalities of all of the characters (and did succeed most of the time) and in a few short moments, some dialogue or an hour of action would unravel everything.  It was kind of frustrating to watch, actually.  The main character, Irisya, is another point I want to mention.  I loved how the author set her up as mostly naïve about the outside world (even if I disagreed with Memphis' choice to do so) as it made for an interesting learning curse (more about this later) but it was also used too much as an excuse for a lack of common sense.  Irisya would do things because 'she didn't know any better' when in reality, you have to have picked up some things from your brother and mother going out and telling you about what's outside.  And wouldn't you eventually grow curious or restless, being cooped up in an apartment your entire life?  She is an incredibly puzzling character and I couldn't figure her out for the life of me.

2.  The plot.   Moving onto the plot, I think the plot is one of the elements the author really did well with.  It was nicely paced (if artificially fast at times) and there is an excellent structure of overarching plot and secondary plot lines.  One issue however: there are random jumps in time without any real breaks or indication (other than some insinuation) which threw me through a loop.  You catch on after a paragraph or two but the mere fact that it's present is concerning.  Nevertheless, it only detracted slightly from the story for me.

3.  The romance.  Yes, there is a romance and I'm happy to report that there is no love triangle or insta-love!  I was half-expecting one (and there is one slightly implied for a chapter but it's dealt with quickly) because of the science fiction nature of the novel.  The lack of one is a lovely asset.  It's quite easy to spot who will be taking part but it's developed in a sweet, innocent sort of way.  Of course, the romance suffered from the same issues that the characters did and it greatly impacted the course of the relationship which irritated me slightly.

4.  The writing.  The writing itself is quite good, actually.  Aside from the character development issues the author has a strong prose.  There is a nice flow and it's easy to read which helped distract from some of the other problems.

5.  The world.  This is also a complicated point.  While the world itself is wonderful (and is mapped out as well, I might add), there are also development problems here.  Elements seem to be thrown in whenever they're most convenient and it's almost as if the author forgot to explain some situations beforehand so the reader is caught up in the moment which isn't exactly the most efficient way to go about it.  I kept waiting for some world building in the beginning that would elaborate a little more on the Plague and it's effects and how exactly the world came to be as it was but there was nothing.  Generally speaking, I think the author simply didn't take enough time to nail down the parameters of her world and the people in it and how those people had historically interacted.

The Final Verdict:
Lack of development in nearly every area is this book's main shortfall.  There were bright spots in the romance, writing, and plot, however.

I got into this book really quickly. From the first page, the author sucks you into Irisya's dystopian world, and with each chapter, she builds a more complete picture of the chaos and terror that ensued after a plagued engulfed what was modern-day Greece. The Non-Infected fled Athens, gong across the sea to the island of Erobos, leaving the Infected to rule the island. Any Non-Infecteds left in Tartaros are in danger of all kinds, from being killed or sold, or taken from their homes and families to Erebos, of which they know nothing about.

So, for years, Irisya has stayed inside the apartment she shares with her brother, Memphis, who impersonates an Infected daily, to be able to go out and provide for him and his sister (through means that he does not usually share with Irisya, but at times, she is able to guess).

Irisya's world is turned upside down when her brother disappears one day and does not return home. When she goes outside the apartment to look for him, she is spotted and identified as a Non-Infected almost immediately and must flee the area and the home that she has not left since she was a child, ad word of a Non-Infected in the area spreads rapidly, and Infecteds begin to hunt for her.

Outside, in a word she had only heard horror stories about, with little knowledge of how to survive, Irisya begins her search for her brother, luckily running into help along the way.

This book was AWESOME! Throughout the whole book, there are twists and surprises, and Irisya is put into all kinds of crazy situations in her journey to find her brother.

I will note that the book was a bit long, but I don't think it was too long. I loved the amount of detail the author put into explaining why things are the way they are in the book.

If you read any of my other book reviews, this may come as a surprise, but I even liked the way the romantic aspects were done in this book. My pet peeve is taking what would otherwise be a perfectly good book and throwing in the clichè love triangle and taking the focus away from the story, or creating a super strong female main character, who turns into a complete idiot over some stupid crush. In this book, the author was excellent at tying the love story in without taking anything away from the story or Irisya's character.

I've also got to say that the author did an amazing job with the ending! Although I'm super anxious and excited to read the next book and see what happens next, it didn't leave off at a super crazy cliff hanger where you have to check and make sure it is actually the end of the book, and it's not missing the last chapter or something (yes, I've done this, more than I care to mention). The ending definitely left me with plenty of questions, but it essentially close up a big chapter of Irisya's story, leaving questions about how the next chapter will go.

I ♥ ♥ ♥-ed this book! It took me a little longer than usual to read, but only because it was a little longer than I expected. However, that definitely wasn't a bad thing! I was happy to spend that time with Irisya and "her people." (Side note: I loved that she started saying this toward the end of the book.)

I will be waiting (not so patiently) for the next book in The Red Era series to be released so that I can find out what happens next with Irisya and "her people!"

The Red Plague (virus) had destroyed most of the modern world.
The remains are 2 cities: Elysion (Styx Sea) the Non-Infecteds town, which no one seems to know anything about & Tartaros the Infecteds town. There is nothing there but hate, violence & poverty.
Irisya (16, Non-Infected girl) & Memphis (brother) struggle for survival.

Non-Infecteds Emissaries (Patrolmen, Snatcher) & Cleaners (Gatherer), keep watch over everyone & everything in Elysion (city).
The Howlers (Infecteds) lived on Mount Thanatos, or in Penia 37 (Tartaros), or by the Wall (Non-Infecteds trash dump).
The Wanderers were people with no money.

Memphis (Khaos clan) was taken or had wondered off.
Ants as Cillian (m), Gemma “Gem” (f), called themselves were traders in/at the Bazaar.
They were also informers for an organization.
Irisya had teamed up & was staying with them.
She later found out Memphis was in/at The Hangar.
Human trafficking was quite the lucrative business.
Will Irisya be able to help Memphis escape?
Carver’s (leader, aka Darkhan) clan members are: Josh (20), Tao, Javier, Heartless, Des, The Furtive, Djafar, & Meg.
They were going to show Irisya how to hunt.
The wanderers populate Mount Thanatos.

Chief Darkhan Carver (Carver Clan) was brought to the Red Square.
The Red Queen didn’t exactly welcome Cillian, Gem Calypso, Irisya, Baxter, Khaos, & Mania, with open arms.
What will happen at the Savages Night?
A request was made to capture/bring in the Wizard (Infected), Messenger (henchman) & Faceless Man.

Warning: This book contains graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written dystopian book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great dystopian movie, or better yet a mini TV series. Jazz it up with some colorful pictures of the characters. Mighty long. To be continued. It wasn’t 1984, but I ended up likening it & still will rate it at 5 stars.

I'm so grateful that Cindy Mezni gave me the opportunity to read this wonderful book! I am a LOVER of YA dystopian novels and Poisoned Iris is one of my favorites!

Irisya lives in a world where a plague has wiped out much of civilization and there is no safe place to be. Everyday is a fight for survival and Irisya has lived much or hers inside while her brother, Memphis, goes out to make a living for them.

One day, Memphis doesn't come back and Irisya sets off to find the only person she has in her life. Once she ventured out into the night, we're introduced to a scary dystopian world full of poverty, murder, starvation and gangs. Irisya almost lost her life on her first night out but was saved by a girl named Gem. Gem takes her in and Irisya soon meets her roommate, Cillian. Cillian doesn't want her there and only cares about him and Gem's survival, but Gem fights for Irisya and they soon become a dysfunctional trio.

The action and adventure in this book are phenomenal. But I think what connected me the most were the elements of friendship and love. This story really explores how far a person will go for the people she loves - for a brother, for a friend, for a lover. My heart swelled and broke throughout the story, taking me deep into Irisya's emotions and intertwining with my own.

The plot will grab hold of you in the very beginning and keep you in a death grip until the end. This book is an adrenaline ride on so many levels! I've been insanely excited for the release of Poisoned Iris and will be recommending it to everyone I know!

Thank you so much Cindy for letting me into your world and introducing me to Irisya and Cillian (who I will ship forever!) <3

Irisya and her brother are Non-Infected leaving in the land of Infected. To keep their identity a secret, Irisya is forced to stay at home and her brother is forced to mutilate himself to appear like the Infected or else they'll be taken into Elysion-the land of the Non Infected where no one knows what happens to them. But one night, Memphis arrives home in a hurry and in the morning he's gone leaving Irisya to fend for herself for the first time and she will stop at nothing to find her brother all while trying to keep her identity as a non-Infected secret.

Irisya was a very unusual character! Btw what a beautiful name!! She came off as a really delicate character, not weak but just extremely fragile. She'd been forced to stay in the house and never really had to face the outside world and only knew it from her brother's stories. She relied heavily on her brother and when he's gone she's scared to death. And that's the first thing that i liked about her, she never even hesitated once before she left to find her brother. She was scared to death about being found, she didn't know how to fire a gun-she knew nothing. And yet she found the courage to go after him without a second thought. She was unwavering in her loyal to her cause despite the many setbacks and hardships she had to face.

The character development was amazing! I think in may of the YA novels nowadays many of the protagonists are already badass and sometimes they become even more so or they just keep being badass but in this book you really got to appreciate the character development! Irisya emerged from this scared but courageous girl to this determined kickass character. But i have a feeling there's way more to her than being only a non-infected because we keep getting subtle hints in the book that she's not quite only a non-infected so that remains to be seen!

I want to comment on the relationship between Irisya and her brother Memphis! It was SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I WANT A MEMPHIS!!!!!! He was so protective and sweet to his sister! and i loved that he described her as 'the human part of him'. There's a scene that literally made my eyes tear up in the book between Memphis and Irisya!! UGH i just love them!!!!

Romance was off the charts!!! Seriously kudos to the author for balancing the plot and the romance equally so that they both took center stage! Cillian was a very complex character to understand. At the beginning he hated Irisya because she posed a threat to his friend, Gem, because she was a non-infected plus there was that prejudice of the non-infected that came to play. I actually found that super interesting that the Infected were disgusted by the Non-Infected! Really cool paradox! I eventually warmed up to Cillian because he was on survival mode and you had to be to survive in this world.

As for side characters, Memphis was my favorite! But Gem was so badass!!! She was so strong despite the atrocities she survived and she was so selfless. In a world where you have to fend for yourself or die, she keeps trying to save Irisya despite that fact that Cillian  tried to dissuade her. Gem and Cillian's relationship was a little confusing at first- i won't spoil-but i loved what it was all along despite the original confusion!

"In the past, it was a matter of skin colour, nationality, sexual orientation, money, opinion or even religion. Today it's a matter of marks or the absence of them in the skin."

As for the plot, it was fast paced and really exciting! There were quite a few surprises and treacheries. We get gangs, underground tunnels, rebellions. human trafficking and a whole lot more! Excellent world building! And a great cliffhanger!!!!!

If you're looking for a fresh, unique, action packed, romance and feels filled dystopia then read this!!! I'm so happy my first review of January is for this book!!!! It was a great start to the year!

The Poisoned Iris is an interesting book that is well written by Cindy Mezni. She manages to come up with a unique story about what would happened after some plague decimated the planet. The story has some well place twists and reads with ease. It is a tad on the longer side. I did enjoy that this book triggered some real emotions in me.

Irisya is an atypical heroine. She grows in this new world that she was well hidden from. She manages to grow through her journey, managing to deal with things nightmares are made of, without loosing her humanity in the process. She finds some great friends throughout this journey that help her to survive. It is definitely difficult to stay true to who you are in this cruel world!

I think the one thing that was overdone was Gemma and her difficulties with the English language. At times it was very rough and didn't read like someone who is still learning the language.

I definitely enjoyed this book and will read the next one once available.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

Poisoned Iris by Cindy Mezni is a fantastic whirlwind of a book. Full of adventure and diverse characters, this book kept me entertained with mini climaxes and obstacles throughout. Whereas most books are a slow climb up the mountain this book has moats, quicksand, and jagged cliffs on the way to the top. It does contain a hefty (and somewhat predictable) little cliffhanger at the end, but it makes me all the more excited for the next books.

Irisya, our surefire protagonist is a gem. She fights tooth and nail doing everything necessary to achieve her goal while coming into her own person and maintaining her humanity throughout the twisted chaos of the city. This little blonde outcast captured my attention. In no time I went from being peeved and wary of her sheltered personality and attitude to being astounded by her perseverance and grit. She never strays from her goal, but still finds the reserve to care for others. This type of strong emotional reaction stands true for supporting and cameo characters as well. I want to say that this book is character driven, but that would be a half-truth. This layered and complex (but easy to follow) plot, man-oh-man, is five stars alone.

Never, I repeat never, forget a character that’s been introduced, no matter how briefly. Irisya, surely doesn’t. With so many characters introduced (slowly and with good context) you’d think that they’d disappear after emerging, like in video games – once they’ve delivered the quest and taught their bit they’d disappear. Wrong! Just like in the real life of a small city (or area of residence), you re-meet people and their lives have progressed without your knowledge (or Irisya’s, since it’s from her prospective). This book must have taken some serious diagramming to make these people have individual timelines that matter and also don’t to Irisya’s life. I say to the author, Bravo. I was never left wanting, just stupefied that I didn’t see half of the parallels and timelines converging. Everything is connected and intertwined. It was beautifully done.

It is certainly a quick read for the sake that you’re solving mini-adventure after mini-adventure. One adventure always leads to a new conflict because in reality nothing is ever easy and these characters are so human. I hate someone one minute and then realize the next that his/her past was harsh and now it’s a defense mechanism. I like the cunning of a bad guy and that’s okay because not all bad guys to Irisya are truly bad people. Our protagonist gets that and displays the truth of both sides in a dazzling way. I found some events and relationships predictable, but I was okay with it. It was a reprieve and a pat on the head while I’m being (happily) blindsided with new things. This plot just kept going and I loved that.

Very rarely do I receive a free book in exchange for a review and love it, but it’s certainly true here. I only wish I had waited to read this series in one go. The wait will be agonizing while I ponder the unknown.

A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced by thoughts.

What would you do for the person you're closest to? Irisya, the main character in Poisoned Iris, is willing to sacrifice herself and her safety in order to find her brother, heading out into the world of the Infecteds with next to no knowledge on how to defend herself.

We join her on her adventure almost immediately - there are very few chapters spent explaining the new world before Irisya leaves on the hunt for Memphis. I really appreciated this fast pace, as it meant nothing dragged and we could get right into things, while still having the essential information about Tartaros. (I also really liked how this was set in what would have been Greece before the Red Plague, as I'm a sucker for the mythology.)

While I liked Irisya as a character, I didn't really care for Memphis. The way he treated her at the start of the book put me off him, and I never really came around. His sister, however, interested me from the get go, as she starts off as quite a timid, unsure person but soon grows stronger and learns a lot as she journey's through Tartaros. Gem and Cillian are also intriguing from the moment we meet them - they're fierce and loyal to each other but have distinctly contrasting attitudes when it comes to helping Irisya.

The writing was nice - not too slow, not confusing or overly complex - but I did feel like it was a little... off. Some word choices, and the phrasing of certain things were odd and could have benefited from some refinement and heavy editing to get rid of mistakes. Gem, especially, made me question the writing style, as she doesn't speak in complete sentences. However, this is more of a stylistic choice and we learn why as the story progresses. Overall, though, it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story for what it was.

The plot was a little on the meandering side as the story progressed, jumping from place to place and taking time in providing the answers you need. It wasn't necessarily bad, but I would have preferred it to be a bit faster as it did take me some time to get through it and it became less enjoyable to read. There were certain parts that stood out to me - like Mount Thanatos - but there were others that I didn't care for at all.

My biggest problem, however, was Cillian. I just... didn't like him. He constantly flip flopped between angsty and brooding to sweet and hurt, and I didn't like his moments of vulnerability as they felt fake and just down right odd coming from him. I also didn't like how he was used to withhold information; telling Irisya that now wasn't the right time for her to know things, meaning we were kept in 'suspense' for far too long. It did more to irritate me than compel me to keep reading.

Things do get back on track towards the end, and the last 10% is probably the most enjoyable. It's a shame things weren't more consistent, as I love the ideas behind this and felt that it had so much potential. That being said, it's not a bad book by any means and if you're intrigued by it, definitely give it a go.

Well Cindy Mezni never ceases to amaze me!!

This is an amazing story that is full of twists and turns, add in a few unusual friendships, and you have a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and asking for more!!! I love the way that Cindy sets the story up - descriptions in great detail that make you feel like you are there witnessing the story as it unfolds. When Irisya realizes that her brother went out and is not coming back, she sets out to find him. She is unaware of what exactly the world outside of their apartment really consists of. I don't write spoilers, but every time I would think that I had a part figured out, Cindy would throw in yet another twist to get me thinking again. Once you are reading, it is definitely one of those books that is hard to put down until you reach the ending. And still then you will want more!!!

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the first book I have read by Cindy Mezni and I have to admit that this genre is not typically what I read BUT I can tell you that it was freaking awesome to read. Cindy has written a great story about Irisya and her brother Memphis who live in a world that is not safe and civilization is pretty much non existent. When Irisya sets out to look for her brother who does not return and the journey she takes in what is left of the world....scary. Truly was a page turner and not at all what I expected when I set out to read - a massive roller coaster of emotions is what you should expect. No spoilers but please read Poisoned Iris.

This book has extraordinary imagination! The places, the characters; all their names are so unique and that's what really makes this book stand out.

I'm not usually a fan of this genre, but boy did I enjoy this book. The braveness of 16 year old Irisya is awe inspiring. She's brave, courageous and one those characters that will forever stick to you long after you've read the book. I mean, after your brother disappears what choice do you have, right?

A fantastic read from this author!

This book had me gripped from the first page. There was always something going on and it's not a small book. The book was written so well that it just let you go into the scenes, the imagination of the author is beyond measure. I have one fault lol the cliffhanger at the end wow!!!! I nearly cried when it said The End. I really want more by this author, it's the best book I've read for a very long time. Recommend that you read this book you will not be disappointed.

This was one amazing story!!! How far would you go to protect a love one? Irisya will be put through every nightmare imaginable to rescue her brother. She lives in a world filled with prejudice base on if you are a non- infected or infected, but Irisya will learn in order to survive she will need love and friendship. Il y a des bonnes choses, j'ai aimé les personnages et l'univers mais des fois c'était *trop* long (le livre fait quand même 637 pages).
