This is a great book when you want to read and your child wants to move around. Young readers are definitely going to want to "follow the leader" and do what the book describes. The author does an exceptional job of blending counting (1 to 10), baby animal names, and habitat into a fun rhyme. The information in the back is excellent.

Tips from the illustrator are handy if you are reading with an older child and/or focusing on the artwork. Highly recommended for toddlers and preschool-aged children.

Arctic animals. Counting book. Each page features a verb. Example: "Over in the Arctic, gliding up toward heaven, lived a mother snowy owl and her little owlets seven. "Swoop", said the mother. "We swoom," said the seven. So they swooped as they flew, gliding up toward heaven."

My four-year-old son picked this book out from the library this week.

We love Marianne Berkes at our house. Especially Marianne Berkes' "Over in..." books. We have almost all of them. But not the newest one, "Over in the River", or this one. You might think, though, that the "Ocean", the "Jungle", the "Forest" and "Australia" would be enough. Apparently not.

Like all of the "Over in..." books, this one can be sung to the tune of "Over in the Meadow", so it is pretty easy to fall into the rhythm of the book. As with all the other "Over in..." books, I learned a little from reading it -- if nothing else, the proper names for animal babies.

Like three other "Over in..." books, this one was illustrated by Jill Dubin. Dubin's style really seems to be a very good match for Berkes' writing.

So, we'll be buying over very own copy of this book before long.

This is my least favorite of the Over in the Meadow derivatives created by Marianne Berkes. Sometimes the text tries too hard to stick to the "meadow" theme, and some of the rhyme choices are a stretch. The illustrations, while interesting in their own right, don't achieve the level of mastery and fascination that Jeanette Canyon had in her collaborations with the same author. On the plus side, the book presents a surprisingly through overview of arctic animals and includes enrichment materials at the end that are worthy of consideration.

This book simply goes through ten different animals that live in the arctic and what they like to do.
This book is so super cute! I think it would be a great and fun way to introduce students to different animals in different places.
I would read this book aloud and perhaps maybe the whole series and have each student have a specific country and do some research on the different animals and we can make a class book about all the different countries' animals.

In the tradition of Over in the Meadow this fun book uses arctic animals. A great group read aloud, get your kiddos imitating the animals for even more fun! The illustrations are not my favorite, but they are not distracting, either. As an added bonus, there's several pages at the end with facts about the animals portrayed and about the "hidden" animals (each page has one). A definite keeper.

A great book to share new vocabulary such as artic, tundra, etc. Fun to sing and in addition the book is a counting book, which the children loved guessing what number came next. A bit of an I spy book with additional creatures hiding in the illustrations, great for a one on one read. Of course very repetitive text.

Cute counting book with illustrations all created using layers of cut paper. It was fun to go back and find all the hidden characters. Written in rhyme.

This one was actually a reread for us, as my kids love this series. There’s a lot of detail in the pictures, my kids enjoy the “find the hidden animal” feature, and the back matter has a lot of good details on both sets of animals. The note from the illustrator with tips for making collages was a nice touch, too.

Using the tune of the classic “Over in the Meadow”, this version is all about arctic animals. Creative illustrations from torn paper makes it very unique. Over in the Ocean is a similar spin-off to the classic, and we love that one too

The quality of the writing in this book is great and would be worth 4 stars, but the graphic design isn't so great and it makes the text hard to read.

I enjoyed this book because not only was it helping kids with counting and numbers as well as reading, but the book also gave facts about all the animals that were in it. So I feel that this book helps children that read it in more ways than one.

Cute counting book with delightful pictures of arctic animals. I read this for my storytime group and the kids enjoyed doing the actions along with the baby animals. I also like how in the back of the book Berkes gives additional information on each animal as well as tips for using the book.

Super fun book-to-sing with lots of extras--you learn the names of the baby artic animals, you find hidden animals on each page, there is a little write-up in the back about each animal. GREAT!

My four-year-old never lost interest, and went back to make sure he found all the hidden bonus animals. I appreciated that the rhymes weren't too forced and klunky. Informative!

This is a very educational style book. Throughout the book you are introduced to many animals that live in the artic! Each new animals has a baby added to their page so children are also working on their numbers as they read. At the end of the book there is a discription given about each animal. It gives details on how they live and what each animal does for food and shelter.
