My new neighbor is an online sex advice vlogger — but she doesn’t know that I know
Out of curiosity, I checked out her videos. Who wouldn’t? I didn’t count on being tempted by her sexy voice or her full lips. Too bad she’s off limits. Being a single dad isn’t easy, and I have rules — no relationships and no f*cking anyone my daughter knows. But when I become the subject of her posts, I can’t keep my hands off her any longer. I have to teach her everything she got wrong in her videos.
Release Date: January 4, 2017 Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Dual - 1st person Steam: 4 out of 5 Series or Standalone: Standalone
I haven't read anything from this author since her debut duet, Loving Jay. I didn't really know what to expect. Had she gone in a new direction? Had her writing changed or further developed? Would I connect with the story? I was praying that the amazing potential I had found in this author would shine through. And did it ever! My worries and questions were for nothing. Simone Sowood... sister... girlfriend... you slayed milady!!
I loved this book! I enjoyed so many points of this story. The plot was written in a way that made it refreshing. It certainly grabbed and held my attention and there were many instances to which I could relate.
Avery was a likable heroine. A YouTube sex advice sensation, she really just wanted to be happy, to love and to be loved in return. Great sex wouldn't hurt either. She got all that she wished for and more with Knox. I especially enjoyed her interactions with his daughter, Piper.
I felt a stronger connection with Knox. It mostly had to do with him being a single father. As a single parent myself, I find it difficult to be both a mother and a single woman. Being a mother ALWAYS takes priority and I find that my social life is a mere afterthought. It's really mostly a memory. So I got where he was coming from by putting Piper first and not wanting to bring women around her. It would get confusing for the child if there was a revolving door because he was dating. However, I do agree that he was a bit too hard on himself. He could have dated and once the relationship reached a certain point, THEN bring the lucky woman to meet his daughter. I respected how he handled his responsibilities (when a lot of men don't) and the lengths he was willing to go to in order to ensure Piper's happiness and well-being. Don't get ish twisted. I definitely noticed how incredibly sexy his character was and couldn't get enough of Knox, the man.
This story was fun, sexy and thoroughly entertaining and I would recommend it to anyone looking for plenty of steam with their romance!
The story of the jerk extraordinaire and clingy I can't decide what kind of character I should be , Knox and Avery, a.k.a Fuckwit and Clingon.
The YouTube vlogger aspect was something new to me. I was curious, how the author would handle the problems being a famous sex advice vlogger would bring. Especially for a woman living in a little town. Well, it was handled delicately. As in, there was nothing about it. Only the main sex interest knew who she was, while all of the other people living around there was grounded with no WiFi.
I know, I know... I seem to have high expectations for my contemporary smut, so I told my inner bitch to shut it and enjoy the romance. Which consisted of Fuckwit going between my junk is the greatest gift given to the womenfolk cockiness and I'm a parent so I am not allowed to have a life angst. And Clingon wetting her panties at the first grunt. Then some needless drama with a rude friend thrown in for the fuck of it.
Lip Service had a lot of good parts and I must say some very hot scenes. I liked the book as a whole, but I wish there was more of it. It wasn't a short book so it's not the length that was my issue, it was the fact that there was a lot that seemed like filler instead of story.
Like I said, I did enjoy the story and I thought Avery and Knox made a good couple, but there was a lack of connection between them. So while their relationship seemed to be going well I didn't see more than just simple dating between them and I kept looking for more.
A random comment but lately I have been hating the heroines best friends in my books. I've read a few books lately that the BFF's have just been nothing more than obnoxious and actually didn't seem to be all that nice to the heroines. That was the situation with Averys friend that made a few appearances and I just didn't like how crazy she seemed.
Overall, I do recommend this book because I think it was just me letting little things bother me and that's why it was only a 3.5 read for me. Knox is definitely a hero that I think many will like though so I hope you'll give him a chance.
I liked it as a whole, pretty cute and fun story. There were times when the characters were annoying and sometimes the action felt rushed, but it didn't really bother me too much. I did really like the girl though, she might be my favorite character from this book. It's not short enough for a coffee read and not long enough for you to actually fall in love with this couple, but it's still a pretty decent read.
The characters were mostly believable. And I liked most of them, although I was not all that fond of her friend. But that said, I had some issues totally believing all about them. Avery has a vlog, one that she doesn't try to hide her identity on, at all. But she is convinced no one will recognize her, even though the vlog has 2+ million subscribers. This seemed off to me. And, Knox hasn't had even an inkling of a relationship in 13 years, since he was 22. While this is possible, as he is motivated by his daughter, I thought he slid too easily into the idea that he was in a relationship (once they got there) and while there were issues, none of them seemed to be related to him adjusting to the idea that he was in a relationship. Yes, this is dealt with, and in his motivation, it is because he has never met anyone he wanted to be involved with, so I was mostly able to enjoy this. I also appreciated that they were older. While books about people in their 20s are fine, it is nice to read about people in their 30s who are a little more settled into who they are and what they want.
The plot is what drew me to this book. I loved the idea that she started using Know as the motivation/inspiration for the vlog. I loved that this continued even after they got together. I loved that he knew, and didn't really try to keep it a secret, that he knew what she did for a living. That said, I thought Piper, at 13, was too old for Knox's obsessive need to protect her from even the idea that he may date someone. So, for me, this was a bit of an issue. But, I was mostly able to ignore it, as he was overprotective of his daughter in all areas, not just this one.
The pacing was off to me, and it never seemed to decide if it was an erotic romance or a romance. We meet Knox when he is f*****g a nameless woman on the hood of his car at a car show. The hero with another woman, yes prior to meeting the heroine, is usually an erotic romance. And then it takes a while for Knox and Avery to get together. There are some solo scenes, and some attraction to one another that they are fighting, but the build up is longer than for an erotic romance. And then they get together, and it is hot, and it is gritty, and it is definitely on the dirty side...have I mentioned it is hot? Because it is...but definitely more on the erotic side. the book, for me, never seemed to totally decide if it wanted to be an erotic romance (I think ultimately it is) or a more traditional one with the build into the relationship. For me, this caused the pacing to feel a bit off.
The writing was strong and the dialog was also believable. I did believe the characters were who they were portrayed to be and their actions were consistent with those characterizations, which was a major plus to the story.
That said, I enjoyed this overall. And, the issues I had with the book definitely didn't keep me from being able to enjoy it. I am definitely looking forward to the next book by this author, and she is being added to my list of authors I read their next one, just because I really liked the last one.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Avery is starting over in a new town after ending a 4-year relationship. As a hard working YouTube Sex-Advice Vlogger, she is successful enough to live comfortably and buys her first home next to Knox and his daughter.
Knox, a car enthusiast and a single father to a 13-year-old girl. He doesn't date, he doesn't do relationships. He puts his daughter first and everything else either comes second or doesn't exist at all, until Avery moves in next door, of course.
This is the third book I have read by Simone Sowood. And unfortunately, this was my least favorite behind Carny and Hung; however, those are tough contenders.
This story was a neighbors turned enemies (maybe enemies is a bit harsh .. maybe something more indifferent is more suitable) turned FWB turned BF/GF turned ... you get it.
Although I usually relish in the idea of short books, this book needed to be longer. It needed more emotion, maybe some more drama or conflict. It was just too simple. I felt that Knox changed too quickly and I really thought he should or would have struggled with the idea of a relationship since he was set on avoiding them for 13+ years. Anything, any type of drama was needed. Maybe Avery could have battled with a stalker because of her line of work and not with what seemed like a last minute quarrel with her ex. Maybe Knox's daughter found out about Avery's line of work through a group of friends at school. Something? I was waiting for something and when it didn't happen, I was basically like..
My last complaint was that although it was very evident that Knox and Avery shared a physical connection, I wish an emotional connection was addressed more - it just wasn't as believable. Having this as a longer book would have helped immensely.
Simone's writing style is always great, I always prefer reading dual perspectives. She always nails the more intimate scenes and has you reading it loud to your husband, you know, so he may take the hint and do the same thing to you that you just read.
When I first started this I was excited. It was good and I was really hopeful. And you know what? The first 20-30% was really enjoyable, but after that it just went downhill. I began to really dislike the characters (mostly because I wasn't really given a reason to like them). The dialogue was awkward and mostly focused around sex and the writing wasn't much better. It was like a boring movie with really bad actors who were just reading the script like it was a shopping list.
And OMG Her friend Darla has no social etiquette whatsoever! I don't care how open you are, there are certain things you just don't say to someone you're meeting for the first time. I don't know if it was supposed to be funny or not, but it was just cringey and if I were Knox, I would have run the hell away from them both. I didn't even see he purpose of Darla being written in anyway.
Reading about her "vlogging" was just so awkward. She comes across as some sort of know it all offering advice about shit people don't need advice about?! Plus, her videos seem like they'd be really short. From the bits and pieces we get I can't imagine how much more she has to say. It's probably stupid to critique a YouTube video that's not even real, but it's such a large part of the story that I feel like it could have been way better. Also she uploaded a YouTube video, it got 200,000 views yet only 2 comments? Seems odd to me.
Finally I think if you're looking to read smut with close to no plot line, this is for you! Even then, it was awkward, and really uncomfortable to read at times (e.g. The weird masturbation window scene????). The one chance at a decent "plot twist" was just so unbelievably stupid it doesn't even count. So I guess what I'm saying is, read something else.
If my past few reads have anything to say about 2017, I'm not looking forward to it!
I found this story through a newsletter. After reading the book description, I was hooked. This story will definitely rev the imagination of the reader. This is the first book I've read from this author, and after reading this one, I will be reading more from her.
I loved how her writing brought out the essence of this story. Feelings and emotions were heartfelt, along with some hot, sexy scenes that had me panting. I think I've found a book boyfriend. The characters were compelling with realistic flaws and desires. Even the responsibility of parenting was a great asset throughout the story. The pace was steady and the plot was believeable with some humorous moments.
Avery and Knox are neighbors. Both have responsibilities, needs and desires that are very important to them. Situations will draw them together with passion. Will they endure being lonely because of their responsibilities?
I recommend this book to all readers who finding a book boyfriend that's hot and responsible. Get the book, read it, and you can decide.
I liked this one a little more then the other ones. But not enough to have a great time.
I'm sorry if I come across as a whiner, but I'm just being my honest self.
This one was a bit more fun, it's actually very hot and steamy. The blurb sounded very nice and overal the story was nice. Even though Knox came across as an ass most of the time, but with his pov you got to know why that is and his thoughts.
The kid & neighbor dynamic not ok with me: who the f*ck lets their 8th grader hang out with a 31yr old neighbor they have never met & like 30 seconds later offers to buy her a bra?! Creepy, not ok. Also the writing was flat.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I feel like this story has the potential to be a really great (NC-17 rated) Hallmark movie. Smoking hot single father breaks his "no-dating" rule for his cute new neighbor! I can see it now.. Stephen Amell as Knox and... well anyone as Avery!
No But really..
The main character, Avery, was great! I liked her a lot more than Knox (the male MC), which may be a first for me. Plus, the fact that she was a Sex Life Adviser (not sure if thats the title she used..) on Youtube was a fun spin!
I liked this book but I didn't love it. It was missing something for me. Maybe more of her crazy ex? More of the in-between friends with benefits stuff? Not sure.
side note: I'm a sucker for pretty book cover and this one is gorgeous! p.s. Many thanks to the author for submitting this to the K & T Prize bank! Very happy to have won it!
Knox, was rough around the edges; and a man of few words, with a bad boy attitude. Avery, was pretty much his opposite. She was a sex advice vlogger, that really needed some inspiration, and new subject material. Knox has a thirteen year old daughter, who needs womanly advice more so now, than ever. What could be a better situation...? Sparks fly, and arrangements are made--to be ultimately be broken!
Knox doesn't do relationships he only spends time with women long enough to get his sexual needs fulfilled well there is one female he will spend unlimited time with and that's Piper his 13yr old daughter who he raises alone.
Avery is new in town and she just so happens to be Knox's new neighbour she's a vlogger who gives advice and tips on all things sex related, despite being very popular she'd like to keep that part of herself private from her new neighbour who she's very attracted to but what she doesn't know is he's already aware of what she does. They're first introduced to each other through Piper who befriends Avery despite Knox telling her to keep away, Piper is a smart girl who tries to play matchmaker between Knox and Avery. Knox ends up watching some of Avery's videos and realises she's attracted to him and appears to not be interested in a relationship either so he goes to her with a neighbours with benefits proposition which she hastily accepts, she soon finds out he knew what she does and they end up having plenty of fun and their encounters inspire her videos. They'd both agreed to keep things purely sexual but they develop feelings for each other which freaks Knox out and when Piper goes through some heartbreak Knox pushes Avery away he feels like he's failing his daughter by thinking of his own needs but what he doesn't fully understand until he watches another one of Avery's videos is that Avery wants Piper in her life just as much as she wants Knox and she's devastated he's pushed her away, they do end up together much to Piper's delight. I loved this book, I liked Avery, I really liked Knox he was insanely hot and sexy with a bit of a potty mouth but what I really loved was Piper she was adorably cute and funny she made the book for me.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book.
Knox and his daughter Piper have a new neighbor... She's a lot different than the old lady that lived there before, she's a youtube vlogger who makes video's about sex and relationships, even though she's been single the last 6 months
Knox is a jerk, especially in the beginning but it's only because he lives life for his daughter. He made a promise to himself he wouldn't do to his daughter what his mother done to him, which was have a string of relationships in and out of her life. He is a good dad, a really good dad but he's moody and rude a lot of the time, especially to his new neighbor Avery. It has to be because he wants her so badly right?
Avery has the hots for the new neighbor too and is quite taken with his thirteen year old daughter who really is adorable and too smart for her own good. I'm such a sucker for hot guys who are great with kids so this one was cute.
I wish Avery would've had a different job though, the writer would've been better, I just didn't find the whole youtube thing believable. I know lots of people do it now days, but just blah... And then she was so surprised when she'd found out that even though Knox knew about her video's she was surprised when she posted a new one about him, that he'd seen it... it's like, duh lady, you know he watches your video's and you make one specifically about him and you're so shocked that he's watched it?? Really?
Overall though, it was a cute read and I liked Avery and Knox together. Avery's friend Darla was annoying, I could've done without her being in it. She was obnoxious, waaaay too outspoken and just not an appealing person. A good friend? Absolutely. Maybe just too outspoken for me. I dunno....
I really enjoyed this story until about the 30% point. The initial banter between Avery and Knox was great. But once their 'neighbors with benefits' started it went downhill for me. I was so turned off by Darla, not sure why her character was even necessary to this story. And the constant talk about Nathan and how shitty he was as a lover, for goodness sakes he is your ex! Get over it already!!! And to suggest that his newest girl broke up with him because he isn't good in bed, that's just beyond immature if you base the strength of a relationship/engagement on that.
Spoiler Alert!!!!!!
I was a little shocked at the ending. I had a hard time believing that a guy who is so obsessed with doing everything right by his daughter would intentionally want to have a child with his live in girlfriend. Wouldn't a better example of been to marry her first, not as an afterthought?
Single dad? Check Sexy neighbor? Check Sex/advice vlog? Check- I'm very intrigued with this. All the things that the description states has me super excited to read this book. It sounds right up my alley.
Knox was fun. Yes he took his responsibilities really seriously but at the same time he was laid back when he needed to be. Totally made me laugh and my heart beat faster. He had a cocky personality and it really worked perfect for the story and for his character. Women like that in a man ( well I like it) when they can be confident but not overly confident where it's annoying.
Avery was pretty down to earth. He "job" was fun and an interesting aspect of the story. I felt she could have been a little more comfortable in her own skin but it didn't really take away from the story.
I loved the plot. Knox was a single dad to a teenage girl and when Avery came into his life, things were totally flipped around. It was a really fun plot and the characters were great.
The steam factor was steamy. I really enjoyed that it Inc. what she did for a living into the sex scenes, it brought in a real feel to those parts.
Being my first book by this author I really enjoyed it and it won't be my last. While the pace of the story was good, some parts were rushed. If I go into detail then I will spoil and i don't want to spoil, but I wish some things were elaborated on more
Ok, enough babbling. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I wish some things had been different or longer but in the end it was a really good book. I really enjoyed the ending the epilogue was just perfect. 4 stars #2OCCJD
It was actually real fun to read “Lip Service” by Simone Sowood. It is not the first book I read by this author and I liked her previous books, same like this one actually. But this one was quite different from the others - I think - because I detected more humor in it. Actually I found myself laughing out loud while visualizing a scene that must have been totally embarrassing for the female lead – No spoilers I just hint :”open WINDOWS are not a good idea if you intend to do something that makes a noise” Knox daughter was a blast and all together those three were a mix that real life could not have made better. The characters were mostly believable and the story was near to real life. Except that Avery seemed a little naïve on the fact that nobody would recognize her, even if she had a following of that size. After writing “Carny”, a more sobering darker read (which I loved very much), Simone Sowood now managed to stay true to her style while still changing the “tone” of the book to something lighter and funnier. Still the book did not loose the depth she so far managed to give to all of the books I read from her and I look forward to her next releases.
WILL PIPER WIN AND GET A NEW MOTHER? OR WILL KNOX HEAD HER OFF AT THE PASS?
This isn’t the first book I have read by Simone Sowood, nor can I say it is my favorite of her books. It is a good book with a good story line. One that will peak your interest and keep you reading. Her characters are believable and you will love the meddling 13-year-old who wants her father to be happy. Though I felt that there were some parts that were not that believable I had to realize this is fiction, and it isn’t real anyways. Using your imagination, you can get so much out of this book and its characters. I don’t think you will be disappointed in reading this book by no means. Knox is a car dealer of sorts. He buys cars, rebuilds them and then sells them. He has no time for women except to f**k them. The only girl he has time for is his 13-year-old daughter that he loves and is trying to raise on his own. Avery is a successful vlogger who gives sex advice to men and women on line. She is new in town and though her neighbor (Knox) is rude and doesn’t like her, she forms a relationship with his daughter Piper. Know decides to mess with her because he knows who she is and that is just the type of person he is. Well is doesn’t take much to get things started between the two of them. Will Knox and Avery ever see eye to eye? Will they succumb to Piper’s matchmaking? Or will they both stay miserably lonesome?
No Spoilers. Advanced Reader Copy read voluntarily.
Knox is a single dad with a teenage daughter, Piper. Piper is his #1 priority. Then Avery moves in next door. Young attractive, single woman. Piper promptly introduces herself to Avery and begins matchmaking. Knox restores old cars in his garage at home. Avery is a blogger. She blogs about relationships, sex and anything related. Her "bedroom" is located on the same side of Knox's garage. He soon becomes the inspiration for several web videos. Knox discovers her secret job and starts following her. After much time of not communicating directly, they decide to become "neighbors with benefits". Easy peasy, until they discover that they actually like each other. Soon Piper is confronted with a crisis with her biological mother. She is devastated! Knox immediately feels like he has let her down because he was not making her his number one priority. Avery and Knox's budding romance is quickly nipped. After a plea from Avery stating that "unicorns are real", then they are able to embrace their new relationship. It was hot and naughty, but also sweet. I really enjoyed the book. I understand that I am receiving an advanced copy of this book for a voluntary and completely honest review.
