I really enjoyed this second book in the Howling Wolf series. It picked up close to where the First left off. The reader should really read this series in order. The storylines build on each other. The cousins Saz, the mate of the oldest Winter brother DEVLIN (Book 1) and Jon were both male Omegas in a pack that treated them as lesser beings, okay to abuse without repercussions.
Jon had been mated to Cody, the cruel leader of of their pack. Cody's brother, Chad and other pack members went after Saz's family. The Winter brothers had not taken kindly to their oldest brother's new mate's family being harmed by his former pack. The brothers went, saved the two cousins as well as Saz's family. Then the Winters brought Saz and his scared abused cousin, Jon. Unfortunately in the battle the pack leader's brother, Chad and intended mate of Saz had been killed.
Jon took the opportunity to get away from his abusive mate by joining his cousin Saz in the small town of Green Creek. It was nice though scary to Jon having so much freedom for the first time. In his former repressive pack he had to ask for rarely given permission to do most things. And without a doubt Jon had to ask to go anywhere & especially to change into his Wolf.
Cade Winter was jaded, temperamental, and determined not to allow anyone to get close. He suffered as a result of his military tours of duty. Not able to get a good night's sleep, Cade usually went to help out at the family bar. A place the slender green eyed Omega Jon often ended up at after a day of job hunting. Even though he fantasized about Jon, Cade turned down his invitation to hang out together.
The two were drawn towards each other despite fervent denials. Seemingly so different from each other yet sharing the similar terrifying experiences of night terrors. Nightmares stemming from different sources yet none the less debilitating. Especially since it meant a chronic fatigue from lying awake or fear of even falling asleep or after awakening in a cold sweat & terrified and lashing out with a bed partner. For Cade this meant no overnight One Night Stands.
Jon didn't want anyone except Cade. He was repulsed by most other men that were regularly showing interest in him. But the attention was unwanted after all the physical, emotional, sexual, and mental abuse that he'd been subjected to by his former, now deceased mate. Hurt by the rejection from Cade, Jon still continued to be interested in the man that had helped to rescue him from his terrible former life.
Cade could not understand why someone as beautiful, sweet, and innocent as Jon could be attracted to him. Though he pushed Jon away, Cade couldn't control his protective instincts when it came to Jon. Despite being discouraged Jon still wanted to be in the brothers rough crowd bar. Even if Jon was broke and fearful, he didn't want to miss a chance to catch a glimpse of Cade.
These two men who had both suffered so much were attracted to each other like metal & magnets. Jon though small & an Omega was not as delicate as he appeared. He could be strong and stubborn just like his cousin Saz, whom he envied. His loving relationship with his mate Devlin. But Jon loved his cousin Saz and was grateful to Dev so he sucked it up & put his loyalty and appreciation ahead of pettiness.
If only he and Cade could get what the other couple had: love, respect, friendship, and desire. Little did Jon know the slowly growing bond with Cade would be put to a test. His gradual increasing confidence because of his job and the belief in him by others would be solely challenged. Will Jon come out stronger or decimated? Did Cade wait too long? Will he lose his one and only mate chance?
This is a violent book in parts, funny & sweet in others, and terrifying as well. This series of Fel Fern is an easy, interesting page turner. Though I wish so many characters didn't have "C" names. I look forward to reading the Third book in the series.
I really liked this book and I especially appreciated how the author had put such life and personality into the characters. Jon was mated to Cade, however, he had an abusive ex who was still after him for revenge. The story was well done and kept me captivated from beginning to end. Their love for each other was fierce yet precious, and I'm excited to read Riley's story next. Awesome. =)
Cade is a second bok in Howling Wolf series and as such less interesting as Devlin's romance to Saz. This story has something else, way to much sex, compared to the previous story. So if you seek a light novella full of sex, you'll get it in Cade.
The big conflict wasn't much of an impression. Jon's ex shows up after a brief altercation. It just doesn't have the same.... zing.. to it since it's almost carboned of Saz and Dev's conflict. Ex mate trying to take them back and punish them blah blah blah. I didn't feel like this added anything. The opportunity to explore Cade's 'ghosts' and nightmares was not realized. Cade having issues is brought up and then basically out of mind.
I was super excited to jump into this second book in Fel Fern's newest series, 'Howling Wolf'. I so enjoyed Devlin and Saz's story plus it gave me a look at the other three brothers, so naturally I wanted to read more. I adore the idea of these four guys taking over their family's bar after their dad died and working so hard to make it succeed.
Jon is Saz's cousin and from the same repressed, outdated pack that keeps its omegas as nothing more than broodmares. Now that John is away from his abusive ex and living in Green Creek, he's trying to find a job - having no experience - and sleep through the nightmares that plague him of his ex finding him. Cade knows all about nightmares after his service in special forces left him with bad PTSD and memories of ghosts that haunt him. Granted, thoughts of Jon aren't helping matters, either.
I find it hilarious that much like his older brother, Dev, Cade is just as confused and unwilling to listen to his wolf as it declares Jon their mate. Jon knew immediately, or at least, his wolf knew that Cade was their mate. Of course, once the Winter brothers figure things out, it doesn't take them long to claim what is rightfully theirs.
I really enjoyed Cade and Jon's story although I was a little disappointed in the similarities to Dev and Saz's in terms of Jon's ex coming back to cause trouble. But since Saz and Jon are cousins from the same pack, I suppose these plots make sense. Cade and Jon are super hot together and their romance was incredibly sweet.
