Love Can't #2

Love Is Heartless

Rate this book
A Love Can't Novel

Small but mighty—that could be Detective Nevin Ng’s motto. Now a dedicated member of the Portland Police Bureau, he didn’t let a tough start in life stop him from protecting those in need. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, and he doesn’t do relationships. Until he responds to the severe beating of a senior citizen and meets the victim’s wealthy, bow-tied landlord.

Property manager and developer Colin Westwood grew up with all the things Nevin never had, like plenty of money and a supportive, loving family. Too supportive, perhaps, since his childhood illness has left his parents unwilling to admit he’s a strong, grown man. Colin does do relationships, but they never work out. Now he’s thinking maybe he won’t just go with the flow. Maybe it’s time to try something more exciting. But being a witness to a terrible crime—or two—was more than he bargained for.

Despite their differences, Colin and Nevin discover that the sparks fly when they’re together. But sparks are short-lived, dampened by the advent of brutal crimes, and Colin and Nevin have seemingly little in common. The question is whether they have the heart to build something lasting.

Kim Fielding lives in Oregon and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phone booth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Love is Heartless is the second book in the Love Can't series but can be read as a standalone. It overlaps with Love Can't Conquer so we hear about Jeremy and Qay, and see Jeremy on page interacting with Nevin, but the focus is on Nevin and his love interest Colin.

Nevin is a detective who investigates crimes against seniors and the disabled. Once an angry punk, tossed from foster home to foster home, Nevin is now one of the good guys. He may say "fuck" a lot, but he cares about the community and those in need.

Nevin likes both men and women, so the world is his sexual oyster. He doesn't do relationships, and he mostly keeps to himself. Meeting Colin throws Nevin for a loop. Colin is cheerful and sweet. He's fiercely attracted to Nevin, but he knows the score: it's just sex, baby.

But it's never that simple, is it?

Both Nevin and Colin carry scars. Nevin's may be invisible, but they're no less real. There is a deep undercurrent of affection between the men. Nevin falls hard for Colin's cat. (And for Colin too, although he's loath to admit it.)

Collie and Nev are endearing, complex MCs; despite being opposites, they fit together like lock and key. Nevin, all 5 foot 4 of him, is such a strong man, and so kind underneath the prickly surface. Colin is willing to seize the day with Nevin, even though he wants much more than sex.

This book is less angsty (Qay had far more baggage than either Nev or Collie) and sexier than the first. There is some seriously dirty floor lovin', and Colin gets all hot and bossy.

The mystery (someone is preying on the elderly) drives the plot but doesn't overwhelm the romance. There is banter and humor; just prepare for some heartbreak related to the crimes, perpetrated against secondary characters we meet on page.

Kim Fielding is an awesome writer. Her books are consistently readable and polished. After reading one too many self-published novels with glaring editing errors, I am more appreciative than ever of authors who know their way around a comma.

I couldn't put this book down. It gets all the stars!

Opposites attract in the most delicious way...

Take:

One kind of grumpy Detective who doesn't do relationships and doesn't go back for repeats,

One kind of nerdy guy who definitely does do relationships, and wants the white picket fence, and the HEA,

And:

You get something quite delicious and believable and HOT.

I really enjoyed this,I've had it on my Kindle for a while and I've no idea why I didn't read it when I bought it( isn't it great when you go to buy a book and find out you already have it? )

I haven't read anything by Kim Fielding before ( Don't shoot me,I know, Rattlesnake.....

Anyway, let's get back to these gorgeous men....

Nevin might be a badass at work but he's a pussycat deep down.Don't you just love it when you think a man might be dominated and it turns out he likes to be manhandled just a bit??

Colin might be a bit nerdy, after all,he had a collection of Julie Andrews DVDs,likes to sing along to musicals, and Disney films....not quite the femme character I can't get enough of,but pretty close...
To say I loved him is putting it mildly.

AND HELLO,

Who would have thought it?

Colin is a bossy top.....just delicious,it definitely pushed my buttons.

He thrust deep and hard, grunting with effort. He and Colin were noisy together—groans and huffs of air, skin slapping against skin, bedsprings creaking, and the headboard banging against the brick wall. Colin’s fist flew up and down while his other hand clutched the bedding and his pink-tinged skin beaded with sweat. But his gaze stayed focused on Nevin, sharp and bright as a knife-edge.(...)

The story and their relationship develops at just the right pace and add into the mix a murder/mystery plot incorporated very well into the story and this was a total winner for me.

I would definitely recommend it.

Can be a standalone.

Love is Heartless is the second book in the Love Can't series. This book features a new couple, but runs concurrently with book one. We see quite a bit of Jeremy but not Qay. (We only hear of Qay, not see him.) I don't see anyone having a problem reading this as a standalone, but Love Can't Conquer is SUCH a great book, I highly recommend reading it.

Love is Heartless was in the difficult position of being the second book in a series where the first book, Love Can't Conquer, was one of my top 10 books for 2016. Tough act to follow, am I right? And if that weren't hard enough, it also had to follow my #1 favorite book of 2015 also written by Kim Fielding, Rattlesnake.

Big, big shoes to fill.

The aspects of Love Can't Conquer and Rattlesnake that I loved most were the selfless, kind, inspiring characters. Jeremy in Love Can't Conquer and Shane in Rattlesnake. The lead hero, Nevin, in Love is Heartless is a great character and does selfless things every day, loves his small number of friends but is as prickly as a porcupine. Sarcastic, foul-mouthed, hard-headed and kind of an asshole. He's meant to be! There is no sugar-coating the horrible childhood he had growing up in the foster care system. He's been through hell and back and doesn't give a rat's ass about casual, common courtesy. He friends love and accept him, warts and all, which does show a lot about his character, but I had a really hard time warming up to him. It wasn't until the last few chapters that I started to even like him.

Then we have Colin. Sweet, slightly naive, unlucky in love, Colin. The two men could NOT be more different. Opposites attract here and the two start a hot and heavy sexual relationship that will make you blush. (Wall sex people, WALL SEX!)

Because of Nevin's lack of trust and desire to run away screaming from anything that resembles a relationship, we have to witness Colin being treated as a casual fuck (which fortunately doesn't last very long) and seeing Nevin only on Nevin's terms. That was difficult, but again, it didn't last long.

If this was a standalone and I didn't know about Jeremy or Shane, this would be a 4.5 star book for me. But since I DO know Jeremy and Shane and was hoping to see another character similar to them, this is a 3.5 star read for me. That's probably not fair to the author, but it's my honest opinion. This is a good book, but nowhere near Rattlesnake/Love Can't Conquer level.

I did give this one an extra half start because WALL SEX! I love wall sex. And versatile in the bedroom. My crack.

5+++ stars!

Thank fuck for friends reviews. I wasn' t planning on reading this because I didn' t love the first book, but all my friends loved it so I thought I'd give it a go. I adored it! I devoured every word. The consistent characterization, the steam, the banter, the humour...I really clicked with all of it. I honestly think this is Fielding' s best Contemporary book. Very highly recommended.

I've been meaning to get around to this one - but its seems every time I was about to start it another book would catch my eye. Finally, I made a point to read it.

Really, really liked this one. Pretty much ticked all of my boxes.

Good steam
Low angst
Some suspense
Likable main characters
Banter
Great writing

I read this one as a standalone with no problems. The reviews of book 1 have me a little hesitant to jump in to that one, but I may at some point. Regardless, I hope we get more books in this series.

This is the second book in the Love Can't series but can easily be read as a standalone.

I can't tell you how much fun I had writing this. I'm extremely fond of foul-mouthed, cocky Detective Nevin Ng. He swears so much I had to buy a guide to cussing. Cute, perky Colin Westwood is a perfect foil for him. There are murder mysteries, a cat named Legolas, and a purple GTO named Julie. The story takes place in Portland, Oregon, one of my favorite settings. And although opposites can certainly attract, this story raises the question of what it will take to keep them together. I certainly hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing!

Re-read-Still LOVE Nevin, and that Colin is so different but equal to him.
--
Don't normally re-read a book so soon but not in the mood to seek something and I do love Nevin.
...
LOVED this. Immediately drawn to the characters and immersed in their world. Instant favourite.
And how refreshing is it that Nevin works with elderly people, it seems every other m/m book focuses on child-abuse, and while there are some shitty childhoods in this series it shapes but is not the focus here.

The characters are the best:
Nevin - is tough, more prickly than the average hedgehog, scared of commitment but a good heart who doesn't see his own worth. He hides his centre by challenging people. Also he's Bi and it's written smoothly to simply be part of who he is.
Colin - wears bow-ties and sings at every opportunity. Not an obvious match but he's not afraid to take control.
They're both strong in different ways and work around each other, come to need each other, with plenty of humour along the way. While Colin's cat clearly knows where to get the best scritches from the very start the two men have a little way to go, but they're honest and they get there.

A couple of friends make an appearance, and rather than feeling like they were being name-dropped they fit in and it left me hoping for more appearances in future books - and made me back-track to the previous.

Plot, the crime part is not a major focus, but beware of some feels there. It did leave me wondering some things but like I said, not the focus.

Did feel the second part of the book was a little choppier as ends were getting tied up and a few time jumps occurred, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment. This is a low angst heart-warming story with likeable characters that leaves you with a warm feel. Highly recommend it.

I loved Love is Heartless even more than I did Love Can't Conquer. I love flawed and damaged characters and Kim Fielding not only delivers on that, but also on the promised happy ending.

There are character crossovers from the first book, but I think you can read this one standalone, if you wish. I do recommend both books, though, and they each are distinct in their feel. The timelines for both Love is Heartless and Love Can't Conquer run fairly concurrent, as well. I did enjoy seeing Jeremy again, from another POV and I really loved getting to know Nevin more. I loved him in book 1, prickly, sweary attitude and all. I thought it might have been a cover to keep people from getting too close, and I was right.

Detective Nevin Ng is someone we met in Love Can't Conquer. He's 5' 4" of attitude. He's a friend of Jeremy Cox and is as prickly as a hedgehog, and pretty much as stubborn. I really liked him in book 1 and was rather looking forward to seeing him laid low by love. You see, Nevin isn't cut out for relationships. Love only leads to broken hearts and, well, Nevin isn't interested in any of that. And to prove it, he has a rule - never sleep with the same person twice. He's up front about it and isn't actually an asshole to his sexual partners, considering that many of them do want a second go.

Nevin grew up in the system and he didn't have an easy time of it. By the time he was 15, he was an angry young man and probably would have ended up in prison had it not been for one very caring cop. She made him see that he wasn't powerless and that he could aspire to help others. And so he did. He worked his ass off to get his degree and became a cop. Now, he's a detective in the Family Services division of the Portland Police Bureau. It's Nevin's job to protect and help the most helpless among us. The elderly, the physically or mentally impaired, and children. And inside that prickly exterior is the gooey center of a very caring man.

Colin Westwood, by contrast, comes from a wealthy and privileged family. He's never really wanted for anything. But his family is remarkably down to earth and very supportive of him, though his mom can be rather overbearing sometimes, and Colin takes nothing for granted. Colin knows just how fragile life can be, considering he spent a fair amount of his childhood in and out of hospitals for a heart condition he was born with. So Colin never really rocks the boat. He tends to go with the flow. Sadly, that tendency has gotten him into some relationships with men who weren't worthy. But he still had dreams of finding his Prince Charming and living happily ever after.

Colin works for his father's property development firm, and when one of their elderly rental tenants calls almost weekly to report something broken, Colin always goes, even though he knows that there is probably nothing really wrong, except a little bit of loneliness on the part of the tenant. And Colin never acts like it's an inconvenience, because he really is a nice guy and he genuinely cares.

Nevin and Colin are in many ways, opposites. Nevin is prickly and Colin laid back. Nevin wears bespoke suits (off the rack doesn't fit him) and Colin loves plaids and bow ties. Nevin is more of a tom cat where sex is concerned and Colin is a relationship kind of guy. Their backgrounds could not be more different, but they just worked. And I absolutely loved when Colin would get all toppy during sex, even when he was bottoming. It was hawt.

And there was no magic cure for Nevin's fear of commitment, which I appreciated. Nevin was always up front about what he felt he could give and Colin gave him the time and space to figure things out. And Nevin made efforts to talk himself off the ledge when he started to get freaked out by everything. They just complimented each other so well, it was inevitable that they would end up together.

There was a bit of a mystery plot that ran throughout the book, as well, that I am happy didn't overtake things. Someone is killing elderly people and the one thing they all have in common in Colin. But he's never a suspect, thankfully. This plot was pretty minor, though, and so even though the big reveal of the bad guy kind of made me scratch my head, I just let it go. The real story is about Nevin and Colin, and I loved every second of that.

Recommended!

I really enjoy this author's writing style - engaging and an easy, smooth read. These were appealing main characters, and this could definitely be read as a stand-alone. The characters and events from the first book hover on the edge of the story, but don't need to be understood more deeply than is on these pages.

Nevin is a tough guy, a small, feisty, mouthy man who was forged in the crucible of fifteen foster care placements. Nevin Ng was nudged to the side of justice, rather than crime, by a cop who cared, and his own intrinsic compassion, and he has risen to the rank of detective in the police department. On a case that becomes a murder, he meets Colin, a young man with money but also with heart, a rather ordinary guy, except for his impulses to do good and make a difference. Not Nevin's type at all. Usually.

Colin is a pleasant young man, somewhat adrift in his life, working for his father and volunteering his time. He's still looking for a focus, and his last relationship was more convenience than passion. He misses the relationship more than the man. He's well-meaning, but a bit naive, and still finding his adult life. Colin's parents hover, and sometimes bug him, but their intentions are good. It was cool to have well-meaning but not always wise parents in a story.

I enjoyed the progression of the romance a lot. It was fun to watch Nevin slowly slide down the hill of his self-sufficiency to the admission that having someone who cares about you is worth the risks. When it's the right someone. And to see Colin find purpose and passion.

I did wish that the climactic plot issues had been more intrinsic to the story and the characters. Despite being tied to the ongoing mystery, the abrupt events felt pasted onto the plot, to provide a desired scene or two. A bit melodramatic, and unmotivated, when there were other ways drama could have been introduced between the MCs. Despite that, the scenes themselves were well done, and the over all effect is a fun, sweet, and very readable story.

Love is Heartless is the second installment to Kim Fielding’s “Love Can’t” series which starts with Love Can't Conquer, released last year. It features Nevin Ng, a detective in the Vulnerable Adult and Elder Crimes Unit of Portland Police Bureau, who is also Jeremy’s (the main character from the first book) cop buddy.

This book hit me in ALL the right places. I love prickly characters in romance especially those who also don’t believe in relationships. There is something gratifying about reading when these characters realize they are falling in love.

And Nevin Ng, former troubled foster kid who becomes a detective for those in need, fits this category really well. Nevin is as prickly as porcupine! He swears a lot, he disregards the law – I mean he likes parking in illegal spots (*laugh*) — and Nevin is totally a love ‘em and leave ‘em kind of guy. Nevin doesn’t do relationships, he does not believe in falling in love. No siree.

So imagine the fun I had reading how Nevin started to care and later to feel for Colin Westwood, a true romantic at heart – Colin planned his future wedding back in grade school – loves his romantic movies, is the owner of a cat named Legolas, and most definitely doesn’t come from the same social circle as Nevin.

I loved how Kim Fielding wrote the opposite attracts between Nevin and Colin. There wasn’t a single moment where I didn’t believe their chemistry and romantic progress. It felt like I could ‘see’ the moment where Nevin started to see Colin as someone he could be involved with. I loved every single moment these two were together – especially when Nevin agreed to go on dates, or even brought Colin to meet his friends.

This is why I read romance, people! For the ROMANCE … of course, the hot sex between Nevin and Colin was an added bonus (though not an important element for yours truly).

As for the reason why I couldn’t rate it higher – well, it’s that mystery fan in me making her grumbling complaints. See, I grew up with mystery books. Despite being a huge fan of the romance genre over the years, I can’t help but want a good investigation when the story has even a little bit mystery/suspense in it.

Therefore, I was a little bit disappointed that the investigation of the murdered elderly persons seemed to be pushed to the background. While I knew that Nevin was not a homicide detective, I still wanted him to be more involved or informed somehow. Especially since the murder brought Nevin and Colin to their first meeting and it also had contributed to the climax. In addition, I was also still a little bit unclear about the motive of the murders…

All in all, this was another hit from the pen of Kim Fielding. This is why she is one of my solid go-to authors in the genre. FYI, the timeline in this book happened concurrently with Love Can't Conquer. So for readers who have read it, you will not find Qay (Jeremy’s boyfriend) to be present in this book. He is heard later on but not seen. Having said that, if you haven’t read that one, rest assured that this book will be fine to read as stand-alone.

Colin and Nevin are complete opposites. The two have very different ideas on love and life. Luckily, I’m a sucker for an opposites-attract romance.

Nevin only does one-night stands - two nights if the sex was particularly good. Colin’s been dreaming of his wedding since he was a kid.

Nevin can’t get Colin out of his mind after they first meet. Colin’s different, and intriguing in a way that Nevin doesn’t want to look at too closely.

For his part, Colin’s willing to take a chance, even if Nevin makes it clear that he won’t give his heart. Colin, who has dealt with a heart condition since birth, wants to stop playing it safe and see where life takes him.

Both MCs have scars from their pasts, but are more than willing to take what’s offered - sex, and nothing else. I loved the beginning of their relationship- the banter and flirting with an undercurrent of something more.

description

Also, the sex? Hawt. Colin, quiet and unassuming, turns out to have a toppy streak. And Nevin, the always-in-control cop, had no trouble letting go in the bedroom.

The relationship builds slowly. It takes a while for Nevin to admit to himself that what he feels for Colin isn’t just a physical attraction. And even once he does accept that he’s falling for Colin, Nevin has trouble putting his feelings into words. On his end, Colin was patient and understanding, willing to take things at Nevin’s pace.

While trying to navigate their fledgling relationship, Nevin and Colin also become entangled in a crime spree. The mystery/crime helps drive the plot, and the relationship, along, but doesn’t overwhelm the book. However, it does play a part in Nevin realizing that he and Colin could really build a forever-after.

The ending was so sweet and fluffy, with everything tied up nicely. It was a long road, but Colin and Nevin end up with a solid HEA.

If you’re looking for a not-too-angsty contemporary romance with complex MCs who slowly build something permanent, give ‘Love is Heartless’ a try!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The scenario is right up my street and the story of Nevin and Colin really captured my heart.

Nevin's grouchiness and his foul mouth could have been off-putting, but somehow Kim Fielding achieved the exact opposite effect. Snarky Nevin made me grin, and at times the way he is throwing around swear words is funny to the point of cute.

Of course there is a reason for it, too. In a way I see Nevin's language as yet another shield against the world, another means of survival and coping and another way of keeping people from getting too close. He is a brilliant character (I do wonder though how the author found a name like 'Ng')

And Colin is simply adorkable in every way - come on: bow ties, Julie Andrews DVDs, knowing the lyrics to a whole list of musicals and visiting old folk. The whole package is just too cute! Not to forget other ... hmm ...favourable attributes. *G*

There is something totally endearing about Colin. He is the quintessential 'sweet' guy with a surprising bossy side in bed. No way Nevin can resist him when he comes out with lines like this....

"Succumb to my pelvic sorcery!" (and yes, some of the humour was chuckle-worthy!)

"I want to take something that nobody's valued properly and make it feel loved."

Clearly Nevin has no chance, however hard he tries to stick to his rules of non attachment. Seeing his walls crumble and open up was amazing. Seeing him let himself love and overcome some serious mental hurdles was awesome.

So why four stars 'only'?
- although the love story was definitely a 5 star affair, the rest of the plot was underdeveloped and very debatable at the end
- Nevin is stubbornly refusing to think about Colin, but then ends up outside his door without any reason I could follow.
- there were a couple of other occasions when I went 'what? why?'

But this did not in any way interfere with my enjoyment of the book. It is a lovely story.

Recommended.

What an amazing gem! I really loved this book, the relationship development was slow and sweet. Both MCs were fleshed out and even though they seemed very different, almost opposites, they really were a perfect fit. The beginning was a bit slow but then I was thoroughly engrossed in the story. The mystery was also good even though I wish we had seen Nevin investigate more. I really have no niggles, go read it, it's sweet but not too much, it's slow but also believable and hot. The perfect book.

Damn! Disappearing review. It's awesome, I'll tell you more later.

I really, really liked the latest release in the the Love Can't series. The story runs somewhat concurrently with Love Can't Conquer and Jeremy's friend Nevin is the star here. Actually, Colin was more of a star for me but both were engaging characters. Kim has a way with emotionally damaged characters and the way unexpected love can help someone find their own strength. Nevin is the more emotionally damaged of the two, while Colin mostly had a more stable, privileged life. Colin is not without his own issues from the past but they've shaped him into someone who's learned to look outside of himself, with a willingness to share his time with people living on the margins. Colin and Nevin are brought together because of their involvement with elderly LGBTQ and the local support center.

I also very much enjoyed the mystery running beneath the love story. It's central to the plot but the main focus is the growing relationship between Nevin and Colin. There's little tension or angst between the couple, just a reluctantly changing Nevin and patient, easygoing Colin. It was especially great because Colin never demanded or did anything overt and Nevin made changes and faced his emotional shortcomings just for himself. It was fascinating to see it unfold between the two. It still had an element of danger and suspense, with moments of fear and sadness. Colin's family was marvelous and Jeremy, along with Ptolemy, the gender fluid barista and Rhoda, made appearances.

I loved it as much as the first book and I'd recommend it highly for the perfect balance of love story and mystery.

I fell in love with foul-mouthed, crabby, moody and intense Detective Nevin Ng. I love this story, everything about it is simply perfect; intense, sexy as hell, not overly dramatic but captivating nonetheless. Even though it's the second book in the Love Can't Series, it can be read as a standalone without any problems. To be honest, it took me a while to remember details about the first book (I cheated, I went and read my review) and I had no trouble keeping up with Nevin and Colin's story.

Nevin and Colin are as different as fire and water; Colin grew up as the only child of a relatively rich family, and despite his health problems, he's had a happy childhood. His parents love and accept him and want nothing but the best for Colin. Nevin grew up without knowing who his father is and with the knowledge that his mother didn't love him enough to keep him. Abandoned at a young age, Nevin is the product of our faulty foster care system; he's closed off and afraid to make emotional connections with the men and women he fucks, and the only important people in his life are Jeremy (Germy, the main character from book 1) and Ford, Nevin's foster brother.

Nevin is a fuck-em-and-leave-em kind of guy, while Colin is a monogamist who's been dreaming about his wedding since he was a child. Nevin is selfish, prickly as a porcupine, rude and brooding, but underneath that armor hides a heart of gold. Colin is caring and loves volunteering his time talking to lonely older LGBT people. But despite their differences, Nevin and Colin are a match made in heaven. If there ever was a couple made for each other, these two are IT! I loved every single moment, every single interaction, but what I love the most was seeing Nevin fall in love with Leg (Colin's cat) and Colin.

Like in the first book, there's a mystery plot in this book as well, but it doesn't take the focus away from Nevin and Colin. Kim Fielding is one of my favorite authors and I know she can never disappoint me; this book is even more proof that Kim Fielding and I are a match. This book is lovely!

This book is kind of sort of a prequel to the first in the series, since it starts long before Love Can't Conquer, but it's about Jeffrey's friend Nevin Ng and his boyfriend Colin, who Nevin mentioned a couple of times in the first book but who we never met. Now we see how they met and slowly fell in love.

Oh, so slowly. Nevin's a complex character with many walls built around him after a lifetime spent in foster care and for once, we're given a story that gives a more realistic portrayal of how such a character might fall in love. And it's not over a couple of nights. While Nevin becomes interested in Colin fairly quickly, it takes much longer for trust and love to develop. It also takes a lot of patience on Colin's part.

Colin didn't have the lonely life that Nevin did growing up, but he did have to grow up with health issues and the uncertainty of life that can bring. He's always had to be careful, and never had much excitement. So when he meets Nevin, he sees this as his chance to have a wild fling, and hopefully maybe something more if he can keep Nevin from bolting.

I'm not sure why, since I really liked Colin and Nevin, but I never really got them as a couple. It's no fault of the book, but they just never quite clicked for me and I can't even point to any one particular thing to explain why their chemistry was off. Maybe it was simply a matter of I'd rather be reading about Jeremy and Qay again. It might be better actually to read this one first, though it would spoil the ending of the first book so I'm not sure I can actually recommend that either. Maybe start this one until they start talking about Thanksgiving dinner, and then go back and read the first one to the end, then come back and finish this one?

There's also another quasi-mystery here that doesn't get a lot of focus despite Nevin being a detective - hence why I didn't use the mystery tag - but is sort of bubbling in the background until the very end.

Loved pretty much everything about this. Nevin in particular was a fascinating character - prickly yet with a heart of gold. I loved his job and how much he cared about what he did, and that he made it to where he was from such a tough beginning. So very deserving of a HEA and family with Colin.

Bang On 3.5 Stars.

Hmm. Okay. I’m unsure how I feel about this book overall because I liked it and I didn’t like it so I’m sleeping on it to maybe come up with what’s on my mind.

All right, slept on it. I’ll be straight to the point, if Nevin Ng was not an MC, if I had really liked or loved both MCs, this book would have been close to 5 stars. I struggled enormously with Nevin for a good portion of this book, I put it down twice in the first 30% alone because of him. I picked it back up again purely because I really liked Colin and I wanted to read more about him. Every time I felt comfortable, and like I was getting into the groove, Nevin would irritate me again with things he said. I like WYSIWYG people, genuine straight shooters. Yes, Nevin makes it be known what he thinks, but often in a rude, crass and irritating way. There is a distinct difference between being honest and forthright and being rude. Have to put that out there. Oh yes, even though Nevin identifies as bi, maybe he’s pan, I can only add gay as a tag because it’s a gay romance but for someone who is so accepting of sexuality he sure does stereotype. I know, I know, Nevin’s a tough, jaded cookie with a heart of gold. No, not gold, brass, but I don’t care, stereotyping is stereotyping, Nev, but I’ll come to that.

Nevin and Colin meet at a crime scene, one of Colin’s elderly tenants has been bashed in her home and Colin finds her. Nevin is the detective in attendance at the scene because of his community services role within the Portland Police Bureau. Colin is a suspect for a fleeting moment but the more Nevin questions him, talks to him – and more than he would like to – the more unlikely it seems he’s involved. However, other incidents occur over the course of the book and Colin happens to have a connection to them all because of his volunteer work. So Nevin and Colin also connect increasingly because of, but not limited to, the case. They end up having sex, which Nevin makes sure to let Colin know is a one off, and that’s supposed to be that, end of. However, theatre and musical loving Disney devotee Colin is not easy to forget. He’s a softness, a calmness, in a world that can be harsh

So, a few quotes from Nevin, and some reasons why I didn’t get along with him.

“Jesus Christ,” Nevin said. “Will you two nancies knock it off? You’re turning my stomach.”
Colin whirled to glare at him. “Are you homophobic?”

My son and plenty of my friends are “nancies.” I don’t like this, not at all. This is not being prickly, this is being rude, stereotyping, and a non-filtered manchild.

And I don’t want to tell you what I would do, as a parent, to someone who asked me the following question that Nevin asked Colin’s father, because he wanted to know if Colin’s father loved him unconditionally. Heart in the right place but, come on, what person asks this of anyone, let alone a parent they just met? –

“What about you?” Nevin interrupted. “You don’t care that your only son is a great big fairy?”
Harold gave Colin a long look, maybe to assess whether Colin was angry over the question or the terminology.

They play it off casually when Colin’s dad sees Colin is okay, and Colin’s dad makes a bit of a joke about Colin being more of an elf, but I didn’t find it funny. As I said, I struggled with Nevin’s mouth. If I was a friend, I’d be telling him to grow up. Nevin is in his thirties and this is late teens early twenties stuff.

Now, to be fair, if I take Nevin in the context of the overall book, then Nevin Ng is not a bad guy, we just clashed. Underneath his crass and rude veneer is a guy who is loyal to those who are patient enough to be let in, or those few he’s known from his years in the foster system, or work. I know he had a hard time growing up, you get a snapshot at the very beginning of the book, but he has most admirably made something of himself. What I particularly liked about Nevin was his strong work ethic and empathy for those who were less fortunate or being abused, I respected that a great deal. I also respected that he wasn’t a game player, even if I didn’t like his style. For me, though, Nevin only really comes into his own in the last 28% of the book. Yep, I can tell you that percentage with pinpoint accuracy.

Then there’s Colin Westwood. Colin’s a sweetheart – slacks, bowties, wealthy family, brave Legolas the cat owner, and all. The very opposite of where and what Nevin came from, of who Nevin is, Colin is very sweet, very endearing, very kind and patient. Is he naïve? No, he’s not. If anything he’s mature and grounded. Let me tell you that sweet and kind do not equal naïve. He hasn’t had much luck in love and his last relationship was more better the devil you know than passion. Trent left Colin because Colin wasn’t as driven as he was, and for another reason I won’t divulge, he’s dealing with being left but not overly heartbroken over it. Colin has never been a risk-taker in his relationships before, the guys he’s dated have been from comfortable/wealthy backgrounds, staid guys, guys that could be settling-down material. Nevin seems a risk, yes, but suddenly one worth taking. Colin knows Nevin doesn’t do relationships, has never had one, but he’s willing to give Nevin a shot. If Nevin leaves then they’ve had some great sex, which they do, and some interesting times, who can knock that? Colin suggests they have a fling, no strings attached, and Colin is good to his word – no hassles, no dramas, but he still thinks about what he’s doing.

In the end I didn’t love it but I did end up enjoying Love is Heartless, in spite of the Nevin niggles I had. If the book was in someone else’s hands I probably wouldn’t have finished it, but the fact that I did and I actually liked it can be well and truly attributed to Kim Fielding’s talent as a writer, and because Colin was such an engaging and lovable character. Ms. Fielding understands her primary demographic and gives them what they want, and those who enjoy this type of contemporary “MM” romance, and definitely Kim Fielding fans, will more than likely enjoy this book a great deal. There is enough sex, enough of a mystery for a lot of readers, with romance between two opposites-attract guys, where the patient, kind one gets his gruff, jaded commitmentphobe – a winning combination for plenty of romance readers. Love is Heartless is easy reading, for the most part, good for the romantic at heart, and comes complete with a rewarding and sweet HEA. 3.5 Stars!

I'm glad I gave this a try as it was way better than the first book! In the beginning Nevin gave me problems with all his swearing and his attitude but he grew on me and Calvin, he was a sweetheart. Yes, I liked it a lot.

Okay, I'm calling it quits with this one. I don't like the characters, I don't like their dynamic, the plot is boring and I don't like the author's strange approach to the mystery plotline.

My biggest issue is Nevin. I love grumpy characters, I even love characters who are jerks and are rude and sarcastic just because. But the way Nevin was written didn't feel authentic. It felt like the author was forcing over the top rude things to come out of his mouth and they didn't seem natural at all. I was never thinking 'yup, there goes Nevin, being a rude ass again' but I was thinking 'there goes Kim Fielding, making Nevin sound as rude as possible while she types up the story'. I also didn't like Colin, who was incredibly bland and boring. All of this was due to the writing style not working for me because as a whole, characters like Nevin and Colin should be right up my alley.

Another problem was the author's approach to the enemies-to-lovers is one that I dislike. While I want characters to actually be enemies and dislike each other, there has to be some kind of spark between them. There has to be something that makes them be interested in the other person (sexual attraction is a good example) but they don't come together immediately because they dislike certain aspects of the other person. What doesn't work for me is if the characters' don't appear to care about each other at all. During the first 30% I read, I got the feeling that Colin could drop off the face of the earth any second and Nevin would devote 5 seconds to thinking it was a bit odd before forgetting about Colin entirely. I love characters who are antagonistic towards each other and I love slow burns, but the lack of chemistry and spark between the characters made reading their story feel pointless.

I also didn't like how the author dealt with the mystery aspect. Specifically - I didn't like how she DIDN'T deal with it. The story starts with a elderly woman being attacked in her home and then passing away from her injuries. Later, an elderly man disappears from his home and it's presumed that something bad happened to him. Despite Nevin being a detective, there's very little focus on both cases, which I found odd. If you want a story to include a law enforcement character but you don't want to focus on any mystery/suspense stuff, that's fine. You can even include day-to-day detective stuff and specific cases but things need to stay surface-level at every point so it doesn't feel odd when the story doesn't go in depth with them. Harper Fox's Half Moon Chambers was a great example of this.

On one hand, I was glad that the mystery stuff didn't take up a lot of narrative space. But this led to another problem - the author had specifically taken the time to introduce the elderly male victim to readers and tell us a lot about him. So when he disappeared, I had an emotional reaction to that and I was expecting Nevin and Colin to have a similar reaction. Unfortunately, they don't. There's very little focus on the elderly man's situation and the characters seem to move on quickly. There's no urgency and very little sadness or angst about the situation. Nevin barely seems to be working on either case and Colin's angst over the elderly man seems more related to Colin seeing the man as a future version of himself and not liking what that future holds rather than Colin being worried over the elderly man's wellbeing. Once again, I'm blaming the writing style on this because it's not the first time I had this problem with Fielding's books.

In 'Motel.Pool', the author also introduced a heartbreaking situation that was extremely upsetting to me and I thought it would get explored thoroughly, but it didn't. In both situations, it wasn't a case of the story not having enough room for those plotlines to get the space they deserved but it felt like the author wanted to tell a low angst, fluffy romance story and dwelling on sad situations would interfere with that so the heartbreaking stuff got shoved aside. I don't operate like that so I ended up feeling upset and quite annoyed when Nevin and Colin are busy spending the night watching The Lion King together and playing with Colin's cat, while we had no idea what had happened with that poor elderly man. I kept thinking how much it would hurt if I knew that people who had cared about me had moved on within days of me going missing and were continuing with their lives as if I had never been part of it. I know this wasn't the author's intent but I think this is why Fielding and I aren't a good fit. If an author introduces a heartbreaking situation, then I want that situation being explored properly.

Lastly, I disliked the author's approach to this slow burn romance. I love slow burns but only if the MCs are spending plenty of time together. 'Rattlesnake' was a great example of this (they did start having sex pretty fast but their emotional bond took much longer to develop). But in this story, the reason things moved so slowly wasn't just due to Nevin and Colin's personal issues. It was because they were spending much more time with side characters than with each other and I wasn't interested in any of those side characters.

This author is beloved by so many and that's why I keep trying her books but I think I'm going to take a break. I keep hoping to come across another 'Rattlesnake' but it hasn't happened yet so maybe this is one of those situations where I fall in love with one of the author's books but nothing else ever gives me that same feeling.

I loved this just as much as I loved the first book in the series. How can two people that shouldn't be perfect for each other be SO perfect for each other? This was so great that I want to go back and read the first book again because I loved that one too!

That book was fun, cute and good!
I really love these two guys, Colin was my favorite tough.
It's about Love finding you.
Nevin is a cop who really had a rough start in life. But one day he met a really good person and it changed everything.
Colin is the bow tie guy who i really love more more. He's so strong. When i learned about his story, my heart really broke for him. For all people in this situation, i hope you live your life the way you want even if you are afraid of tomorrow because anyway IT'S LIFE. We can't predict the next day. Just enjoy your life beauty :)

A really good book. But the back story was just "sloppy" for me.
Recommend for those who want a sweet romance <<3

Love is Heartless is Book 2 in Kim Fielding's Love Can't Series. This book runs concurrent to the first book so each book is a standalone but because of a situation with Jeremy, they should be read in the correct order. Because Jeremy and Nevin are good friends, you get to see these two characters in each other's books but Qay and Colin do not crossover.

Nevin is a detective in the Portland Police Bureau and investigates crimes against seniors, the disabled and children. Nevin's had a tough life in foster care and has witnessed what can happen to the easily victimized human beings so he works hard to protect them. The only connection from his childhood is his foster brother Ford. Nevin is bisexual, doesn't do relationships, and hooks up with anyone he finds interesting. When he responds to a call about a senior citizen who has been attacked he meets Colin. Colin is the property manager for the elderly woman, obviously wealthy and the complete opposite of Nevin. It isn't until the men meet again at another call for a senior citizen in need that they talk more. Sparks fly between them, and even though Colin doesn't do one night stands, he is interested in Nevin and agrees to whatever he can get. Except, neither can forget their one night stand and it isn't long before Nevin's making excuses to see Colin again.

I loved the foul-mouthed, love them and leave them Nevin! Sometimes in books the character that insists on sleeping with everyone comes across really negatively, Nevin didn't. He was single, upfront and was interested in all kinds. He may have only been 5'4", but his personality and strength came through the pages. I loved the relationship he had with his brother Ford, which showed that even though Nevin said he wasn't capable of relationships, he really was. They both came out of the foster care system with a connection and support that many don't get. And underneath his bristly exterior, he was a really good guy. Colin may have appeared to have the perfect life initially, but it becomes obvious that life is not guaranteed for him. He had a wonderfully, supportive, very involved family. They were wealthy through the hardwork of his parents, but they were a loving family. Once you get to see Colin's family interactions, it explained everything about why Colin is the way he is. I absolutely loved Colin and Nevin together! They may have been complete opposites but they truly fit together perfectly.

This book also had a mystery involved and was a little more prominent in the story than Book 1, but it was not the primary focus. This book had less angst than Book 1, and for me, honestly felt much sweeter and sexier. I liked Book 1, but I loved this book. I could feel the love between the two characters, and they definitely steamed up the pages! Once I started this book, I could not put it down; this is a book that I will read again in the future! I just adored Colin and Nevin!

When I read a series I tend to assume the books will follow each other in a sequential time frame. I was pleasantly surprised that this book, the second in the series, actually takes place slightly before and then the timeline syncs. I thought this feature was fantastic. We are introduced to Nevin in Love Can’t Conquer and I knew he had a tough story to tell. We’re given a brief glimpse of the unfortunate childhood Nev survived, and survive is exactly what he did. However, during the process, he hardened his heart until it rivaled granite.

There are many things Nev does well: he’s a fantastic investigator, a sharp dresser with an even sharper tongue, and he’s an exquisite equal opportunist lover. There are also many things Nev does not do: date, commit, open up his heart. Until he comes across a sweet man with a bright smile and a bow tie. He needs to convince Colin that he’s not worth the trouble. But this proves to be harder than he thought.

What's to like: It seems to be a foregone conclusion that I will enjoy anything Fielding delivers. It doesn’t matter what it is, we fit. I’m certainly not taking this for granted and blissfully devouring her work. I really enjoyed returning faces from the first book. I found all of the characters endearing, even if they had a crusty exterior. The story picked up early and never faltered. I was engaged from the first page to the last. And I don’t know about you, but those are my favorite stories.

What's to love: If you know me at all, you know I love cops. Any uniform makes me weak in the knees but a man in blue knocks my feet from underneath me. Though Nevin has left his patrol days behind him, he’s still an important part of the Portland Police Department. He’s prickly, he’s surly and he has a fierce desire to help those in need. Colin perplexes him. They are from different worlds with polar opposite pasts. Common ground is necessary to make a relationship work, right? But wait, Nevin doesn’t do relationships…does he? Some things in life are worth changing for and better yet, some are worth it. Colin gives Nevin things he’s never had before. If only Nev will recognize them in time. I loved Colin and his endless patience with Nev. He didn’t push or pull or ever demand anything. He could sense the restless emotions inside and knew he was worth waiting for. I also adored how Colin balanced Nevin. And his family is all sorts of awesome. Ohh, and I can’t forget the best goddamn cat in the history of the f*cking universe!

Beware of: An irritating unlikable man who will most definitely rub you the wrong way…at first. Just wait till he opens the door to his heart. Once you’re inside, he’ll never let you leave. And a string of murders take place but never fear, justice is served.

This book is for: Romance readers who enjoy a mysterious edge should take note of this one. Prepare for a dose of angst with an…ever after.

This is a sequel, but you don’t have to read these books in order. However, Kim Fielding is an amazing author and book one is AWESOME so you should read it anyway!

If you did, you’d remember Nevin as Jeremy’s Detective friend with the attitude. This book runs along at the same time as book one, so all those times we’d see Nevin pop in and out acting a bit mysterious – well, Colin is his mystery man!

The main dynamics are the facts that neither man has any real experience being in a relationship. Nevin because his past has made him develop a really thick shell and he doesn’t let people into his heart easily. Colin has grown up with health problems that have precluded his having the best relationships. The chemistry that the two share is due to the fact that they’re just so opposite one another.

Colin is as sweet as pie and so naïve and open that you want to hug him and wrap him in cotton. Nevin, on the other hand, is almost hard to like. He’s just so grumpy and SO determined that Colin won’t mean anything more than a casual hook-up that he comes across as abrasive and callus when – at heart – he’s really anything but.

There’s a little mystery and that ultimately affects our MCs but definitely doesn’t overshadow the relationship building. There’s a bit of tremendously hot smexy times – I think the hottest I’ve read from this author! – but all of their encounters only move the relationship forward and cement the feelings they’re having for one another more firmly.

Luckily, Colin’s family is really sweet and Nevin’s friends are really supportive. We get to see a little bit of Jeremy and Qay – but mostly we see that relationship developing from the outside and from Nevin’s POV.

I love Kim’s writing – her characters are what make her stories resonate so soundly and we definitely have some amazing characters here – I just LOVE Colin! (I especially love how he’s so open and just tells Nevin exactly how things are – there’s no wondering or prevaricating.) I loved book one a bit more – maybe because Qay was just so broken he grabbed me so firmly by my heart – but that doesn’t diminish how wonderful this is.

Highly recommended to fans of the author, this series and fans of opposites attracting and sassy MCs.

Part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

This is a sweet and sexy story about Nevin, a detective who raised himself from a shitty childhood and doesn’t want any serious relationships. During an investigation, he meets Colin, a sweet and wealthy guy, with a knack for bowties. They are totally opposite, but they really click together and Nevin keeps coming back.

Tbh, I found the plot quite lacking. But these guys were sexy, good characters and made it for a nice read. I liked it but didn’t loved it. Maybe too much expectation after the blast I had reading Rattlesnake.

Okay, I must have this book. I must. I must. It doesn't matter one iota that I haven't read the first one yet. It DOES matter that I own it, that I know without a doubt that I'll adore it, and that I therefore want more!! It matters that I must own this one too! So, Book, be my "more". Come hither, my handsome :-)!!
