Ahoy, me mateys! Upset your Mom swam away after you were born? Cry me an ocean. You've got ME to show you the ropes! Well, at least until I get a craving for baby shark. Swim along and I'll teach you how to hunt using all six senses (a whole sense more than a human), why you can NEVER stop moving (blimey, no - not even to sleep!), and what your most dangerous threat is (here's a hint: those sneaky landlubbers don't even live in our waters!). Aye, me hearties, learning How to Survive as a Shark is not as easy as it sounds! How to Survive as a Shark provides a unique take on fish science that will entertain and educate in and out of the classroom. Full of opportunities for extended learning, this book includes fun facts hidden throughout the hilarious illustrated story - and after, a glossary of important terms and some real great white shark photos. Like Foote's "Firefly" book, "How to Survive as a Shark" gives students in grades 3-6 a humorous look at the habitat and behaviors of a species, in this case, the great white shark. The instructor in this title is a great white shark who takes on a pirate persona in order to instruct young great whites on how they should behave. The vocabulary is excellent with great context clues, both pictorial and textual, to accompany some of the challenging words. Sidebars/text boxes provide interesting factoids and a glossary and FAQs are also included. (Review of digital ARC from Edelweiss Above the Treeline.)

Life as a shark is clearly not easy. This book starts with the revelation that moms abandon their pups early on and ends with the idea of sharks eating one another. My sensitive six year old was a little horrified. She recovered eventually and enjoyed the cute illustrations and plenty of raucous, silly language, but definitely not a book for preschoolers. That being said, HOW TO SURVIVE AS A SHARK is jam packed with information about sharks. We learned something new on almost every page. This is a great addition to a STEM shelf and will be a hit every summer during Shark Week.

**Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion**

I loved the humor and approach to the information. Pirate sharks - how fun! Some of the problems that I had with it were technical, which I think will be fixed by publishing (text was difficult to read and didn’t line up with the bubble it was in.)

We've also read the how to survive as a firefly book and enjoyed both. They maybe err on the side of too factual or a little grusome for many toddlers, I'd expect, but that's kind of our speed. Bonus points to my husband for reading this one in a pirate/sea captain voice.

An adult shark gives shark pups lessons in surviving in the ocean. While it's a fun story, it also incorporates many scientific facts into the book. Very enjoyable!
