Combination of Regency romance and a mystery/detective story.

I liked the two main characters. They had charming banters (although at some point Marie's jealousy became annoying). The secondary characters were enjoyable too (especially David, and Biddy). Also, it was interesting about Mckenrot's attempt to serve a writ on the captive Bonaparte - I had no idea about it.

Yet, (probably because I am not a big fan of detective books) I wasn't as gripped as I would have liked.

Jennie Gallant is Joan Smith's pen name. I have liked most of her novels, but for some reason I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as the others. It was very slow paced and the story line leaden. I finished it, but almost gave up about 3/4 of the way through. Still, it had some redeeming qualities and some interesting historical perspectives on the aftermath of Napoleon.

For some reason this was not very engaging. There wasn't any chemistry between Lord Stanford and Marie. The storyline about Bonaparte's attempted rescue was ho-hum. There's not much tension or suspense. It was a light read at best but not compelling. I'd say closer to 2-1/2 stars.
