Sally Warner is a writer of fiction for children and young adults and of books on creativity. She made the Lily series and Emma series for children's books. Sally Warner was born in New York City and grew up in Connecticut and California, where her family moved when she was eight years old.
Second grade Ellray Jakes' little sister Alfie stars in Absolutely Alfie, her own new realistic fiction series. In the second title "First Week Friends," Sally Warner successfully captures Alfie's biggest concern in starting second grade, who will be her friends. In order to prepare herself for second grade, Alfie maps out who her friends will be according to which girls are in her class, and how she'll make it happen. This story is true to life as Elfie learns an important lessons about friendships. First and second grade girls will enjoy Elfie's energy and passion.
I read the first book in this series and was on the fence if this is something I wanted to pass on to my daughter or not because the kids aren't great, there was some lying and disrespecting parents, etc. I read about 30% of this one and decided we can find better series. Alfie goes to the start of 2nd grade and wants her 2 friends to be friends now that they're all in the same class and theres just too much teasing and sass. Its not awful or anything grossly inappropriate, I just know there is better out there.
It's the first week of 2nd grade for Alfie Jakes, and her big plan is to connect her best friend Lulu, and her neighbor Hanni into the perfect trio of friends, but during a teamwork assignment in class, mishaps occur, and Alfie sees her plans for the first week friends fall apart just like the assignment. Lessons are learned and her older brother, EllRay, advises her, "You can't plan people".
An interesting topic. What if two of your friends aren't exactly friendly with one another? Wouldn't you think that the three of you will be all BFFs? Alfie absolutely thinks so and tries to devise a plan to make it happen. But when it backfires, what will she do next?
I just realized while writing this review and thinking about the first book in this series that the main character is an extremely worried person. That may be very helpful to kids who are like that in real life.
