Cecily is happily going about her life, until her boyfriend, James, becomes abusive and hits her one day. Stunned, she turns to her brother, who lives across the country for help. Dex sends help in the form of Shane, a huge, muscled bad ass. Cecily, penniless and scared after running from James, takes one look at Shane as he pulls up and runs for her life.
Shane is not a bad guy though, even though he looks like one. After running her down and reassuring her that he is indeed her brother's friend, Cecily gets in his beloved truck and off they go across the country to New York. Cecily loves her brother dearly, but she has no idea that he is part of The Hudson Kings, a black-ops group who takes government contracts and hunts down bad guys with their fancy weapons and stealthy computer skills. They all live together in a compound (I love when alpha men live together!) and Shane is in charge of getting Cecily back to New York safe. He is the Hudson King's transporter - and he takes it seriously. Shane may be all muscled, abs, and dark jeans on the outside, but on the inside he is a bit of a softy. He starts to fall hard for Cecily, but keeps it in check since she was just hit by her boyfriend and is the sister of Dex, his good buddy. When he realizes someone is following them, he slowly starts to tell Cecily who her brother really is - and that her ex boyfriend is a Russian spy, not the all-american boy she thought he was.
This is a fun, over the top suspense book that had a ton of action that kept me engaged the entire time. Brotherly camaraderie is my candy, and this book has plenty of it. The road trip across the country with just Shane and Cecily was my favorite part though. I love a silent, intense, hero who is capable of cutting down any bad guy that gets in his way. While Cecily is a bit naive about who her brother really is, her weakness for the big, bad Shane was fun to watch unfold. He is bossy, and arrogant, but then gives her hugs when it's all too overwhelming for her.
Now, he sat in a chair across the room from the bed which Cecily sat wrapped in a hotel robe after washing a man out of her hair with some kind of epically fantastic orange-scented shampoo, and the most coherent thought he could keep in his head was: Not. Gonna. Touch. Her.
[...]
She smells like an orange. Never gonna look at an orange the same way ever again. I had an orange right now, I'ma take that orange. Gonna caress that orange, roll it between my hands. I'm going to peel that MOTHERFUCKING ORANGE and suck each and every part of it until her juice is running off my tongue and down my chin, and I can smell her scent all over me for days. I'm gonna--
"Shane?"
"Yeah."
"You're staring into space."
Trust me, I'm not staring into space.
Once they get back to New York, Cecily gets quickly introduced to what her brother really does - and who her ex really is. He has followed her to New York, and this presents a danger to her. They all go into alpha mode - with Dex and Shane squaring off over the fact that Shane has "touched" Cecily in a way her brother doesn't approve of. There is a lot of grunting and harsh words...I licked it up.
My one complaint is about the suspense. Cecily's ex boyfriend started dating her because he knew her brother Dex was part of the Hudson Kings and wanted dirt on them. After he hits her, and she runs to her brother, he follows. The Kings believe he still is in the dark about Cecily knowing who is who and they feel like their cover isn't blown. It just didn't make sense to me. If James is a Russian spy, I think he would catch on about the Kings, and I think they gave him too much leeway - leaving an opening for him to cause trouble to Cecily towards the end of the book. It was a little weak.
Overall the fun alpha Shane and his buddies sets up what I hope it a fun series.
Enjoyable, lots of abs, a hero who knows how to kiss:
A flash of sudden comprehension had Shane giving a small shake of his head: No. He looked mesmerized, his gaze pinned to her mouth.
Stop thinking, sweet boy. Let's both stop all this thinking and just let it happen. She licked her dry lips with the tip of her tongue and leaned into him, feeling his cock press against her thigh.
I really don't like Shane. The heroine deserves better.
The book goes like this: I want her I don't want her I want her I don't want her I want her She deserves better I want her I broke up with her I want her Out of sight, out of mind I want her
Get a grip, could you?
And what's up with the H calling the h kid?? Are you serious?
The Transporter (Hudson Kings #1) by Liz Maverick 4 stars M/F Romance Triggers: Abuse, Stalking, Kidnapping, illegal activity I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
This is a fast paced book with a lot of moving parts. There are also a lot of secondary characters that I hope will all get their own stories because there is a lot of tension and story-lines that hint at a much bigger story for everyone!
Shane is just what the title says - he's a transporter. Just like that Jason Statham movie, it has similar characteristics. Shane has this brooding, impenetrable personality and ultimate loyalty to his band of brothers, the Hudson Kings and is completely taken aback when he's asked to do his brother, Dex a personal favor. He is only to pick up Dex's little sister and bring her back in to the safety of the Hudson Kings.
Cecily has had a bad run, as of late. Her boyfriend wasn't the man she believed and despite her anger at herself, she's also hurt by him. When she learns the true extent of James' betrayal, she handles it fairly level headed. I think that she was more upset with Dex's omissions and felt betrayal there too. I think that we could have had a lot more drama from Cecily, but instead, we were given a much more broad picture of the Hudson Kings as a group.
You have all of the brothers and even a few sisters in this group who are trying to do the right thing, even if it skirts the line of legal. Shane has never let emotion cloud his ability to do his job, but somehow, Cecily was able to penetrate through to his core and now he will stop at nothing to make sure that she's safe, even if he's not able to be on the ground with her.
This has a good underlying story between the members of the group and an unanswered question about James and his group. I hope that as the series moves on, we get more answers and get to continue to see where Cecily and Shane go.
I'm giving her two stars for having written and had it published, because it's more than I've done, but no. Just try again, Sweetheart. Your own characters aren't even true to who you've made them out to be. It's like getting whiplash.
And I cannot handle an alpha male character talking like he's reciting shitty poetry. And she's just been beaten by her former boyfriend and she's jumping in the sack with another guy and possibly calling it love after 5 days? Again - no.
Unrealistic as well. What mercenary ring leader is going to let an inexperienced woman go on an under cover mission because she deserves to help catch the guy that hurt her?? Bologna reason to get them on a fake date so she could wear a dress and heels and be pretty for a guy who starts talking about licking her pussy in the middle of dinner (ON A MISSION WHERE HE SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION) when they were just talking about something else entirely. Just... no.
The guy skirted the line of respect too closely for me. Possibly went over it.
Just so many things wrong with this. DNF for me, so I bet there was more.
Also, did the people who rated it highly end up with a completely different version than me? This book is the equivalent of watching useless monkey porn. Leaves you confused and pushing your husband away. Not tonight, honey. I read some bad porn and it turned me off.
4.5 stars. This type of book is usually not my cup of tea. It involves a group of operatives that work beneath the law to solve problems for the government and other agencies. The guys are all very alpha -- rough, tough, smart, and hunky. In this story one of the guys, Shane, is to pick up another guy's sister and bring her to their enclave. Shane successfully delivers Cecily, but they become mightily attracted on the way. Can a perky graphics arts student and a tough guy that lives with danger make a match?
I was intrigued by the book, almost in spite of myself and will admit to shedding a few tears at the end. The brotherhood of the Hudson Kings was nice to see and the book provided a great set up for the continuation of the series. A way better book than I expected.
Y'all this book is so bad. I was so excited by the premise. A man picks up his mercenary buddies sister and must bring her home safe. She was caught in an abusive relationship and she needed an escape. I love me a good action/suspense romance. This book fails at both action and romance. The action is cheesy and underdone. The romance is over the top and overdone. The characters are never true to themselves or how they would act. Cecily is a vapid, self absorbed admitted gold digger. Shane is an ass who doesn't know what he wants. The other "kings" are disrespectful to women. The whole book is a feminist nightmare. Oh and the audible is real hard to listen to. The woman's voice is so high pitched and grating. Also the amount of times the main character said "ugh" in the beginning of the book is painful. Ugh is not an acceptable thing to put in a book.
All I can say is WOW and when is book two going to be released? It was THAT good!
I know, I know, the alpha male has a few moments where he questions his ability to be the best option for the girl he falls for and she wonders if they are a good match BUT they really are good together and it plays out well and is believable – for them – so – great job and kudos to the author!
This book immediately reminded me of Jason Statham in “The Transporter” but it is different and a great beginning to a new series that I will want to read. The merc group, Hudson Kings, is filled with gorgeous males that are a brotherhood working together on various clandestine projects. There are enough crumbs left about each of the men and two women that made me feel invested and eager to read what comes next. Each character is attractive, interesting and different but together the camaraderie is great and made me want to get to know them all better.
As for the story? Shane is sent by Cecily’s brother, Dex, to pick her up after she leaves an abusive relationship. He has a package to drop off somewhere along the way. There is attraction even though both realize she is on the rebound. There is minimal action taken on the attraction, though. Their arrival in New York at the home base is when the reader meets most of the team and finds out quite a bit more about the Hudson Kings and a bit about another group called 6th Ward. There are mistimings between Shane and Cecily and some times that really work for them with a HEA for the couple by the end of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I won an ebook copy of this book in a contest I entered on Facebook.
I don't know what I thought I was going to get, but it wasn't an action packed, sexy romance with a dirty talking alpha hero who has a frozen heart that melts into gold once touched by love. But that's exactly what I got! And it was a wild ride!
This book was awesome. Total 5 star read. The hero, Shane is what made it a 5 star read. He's exactly how I like my alpha's (and I don't really like alpha heroes all that much). He's extremely strong, mentally and physically, bossy, very confident in his abilities and his job, and super, super loyal. Shane is a member of a mercenary group called the Hudson Kings. He's picking up and transporting Cecily, the little sister to one of his "co-workers." Cecily is literally running away from an abusive boyfriend. Shane is very cold with her in the beginning, despite being totally turned on by her, and is constantly telling her what to do. But she's sick of men telling her what to do so she doesn't take it from him! I loved that. I won't spoil the rest of it for you but I will say how l loved that Shane recognized that he needed to meet her in the middle and not boss her around. He could ask her to do something and get the result he wanted, plus a happy Cecily, instead of a pissed off Cecily.
The chemistry level was OFF THE CHARTS! I felt it through my kindle screen! While there were sexy times (and boy were they worth the wait!), there was only three sexy times (two of which not even making it all the way to home base), so I wished there had of been at least one more scene. Especially after they reunited in the end. It's really my only complaint for this entire book.
I felt that the pacing was good, the story moved along well. This is the first in a new series, with a slew of books coming out, one for each member of the Hudson Kings. Sometimes when a new series starts, the main couple and their romance can get lost in the set up of all these characters and their back stories, but I didn't feel that happened in this book. Each character that was introduced, got just enough introduction and background for the reader to get to know them but didn't distract from Shane and Cecily. I'm actually really excited to read about the rest of the men (and two women) who make up the Hudson Kings! The second book, titled The Financer, is already out and I'm about to go snatch it up!

Woah! Liz Maverick is back in a big way for me. And Shane Sullivan can transport the goods any time, any place. Despite feeling like I should know who Shane was and who the Hudson Kings were (like they were in a previous book somewhere that I just hadn't read), this book hit all my sweet spots.
Tortured hero? Check. Sweet woman? Check. Band of brothers? Check. Serious shit going down? Check and check. Issues in the group? Check. And a mystery for a later book? Check!!
When Dex asks The Transporter to transport his sister to safety, that's what Shane does. But how was he to know that Dex's sister Cecily was going to turn him inside out in just a couple of days? And so begins a wild ride into the world of the Hudson Kings and all their crazy badassery.
I forsee a long and wonderful series out of this and with The Financier already announced, I can't wait for the next installment. Because the band of brothers is awesome but when you add the kickass ladies and the extra special tension between some of them, it gets hot real fast. I loved the boys - Chase, Roth, and Romeo especially - but Missy and Ally just take the whole thing up a few notches.
This is an adrenaline ride and the action definitely dominates, but there is plenty of angsty times and enough character ars to make this a nicely rounded book. Heck, even secondary characters get an arc, so yeah. I'll be reading these as quickly as I can get my hands on them.
First off, let me say that this book is well written. The pacing was smooth and the dialogue spot on which makes for an enjoyable book. I really think that this is a book that a lot of readers will love.
That being said, I didn't fall in love with this book. There was a sense of remove, a glass wall between me and the characters. This really affected my being able to care about the characters which in turn affected the tension that the author was trying to build up. I think that a part of it is the fact that I didn't find it realistic that Cecily is running from an abusive relationship yet is immediately ready to jump right back into one fraught with danger. I have had an abusive relationship in the past and it took me a while to gain back my sense of self worth. Sure I had some rebound flings but those were filled with self doubt. And that self doubt just isn't apparent in her when it comes to Shane.
Like I said, I am sure that many of my readers will enjoy this book and it is the start of a new series so jump into the story of the Hudson Kings from the beginning. This book does contain violence and some rather hot sex scenes so be forewarned.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.
THE TRANSPORTER, which kicks off the new Hudson Kings romantic suspense series, is my first Liz Maverick book. While it didn’t totally blow me away, it’s a solid, well-written, and fast-paced read with the right amount of exposition to set up the series, heroes who operate steadily in the grey, and off-the-charts chemistry between the hero and heroine. Heroes that blow hot one second and cold the next, changing their mind so fast they give you whiplash, are a pet peeve of mine so Shane rubbed me the wrong way for the bulk of the book, but I enjoyed Cecily’s arc and the camaraderie between the Kings. Overall, a good way to kill a few hours on a hot summer day, and while I won’t be waiting with bated breath for the next instalment in the series, I definitely won’t turn my nose up at it either and will pick it up when it’s released.
This is one of those books that I came across by chance and decided to give a go. What a great find!
Fast paced, witty, well written and romantic. I couldn't put this one down. Fantastic read.
Cecily is leaving her boyfriend after seeing his true colours. Her brother sends his friend Shane to pick her up due to an injury. Sparks fly...
Shane is tall, dark and handsome. He keeps himself to himself and focuses on getting the job done. But there is something about Cecily. She gets under his skin and we see another side to him when they are together. Cecily, on the other hand, is quiet and frightened when we first meet her. But she realises in life she has to stand up for herself and take what she wants. Look out Shane!
So pleased to hear that this is a series and more books will be coming about the rest of the Hudson Kings team. All of them are great characters so to read each of their stories will be brilliant. Already pre ordered number 2!
I think this series has potential but this book gets things off to a rocky start. I kept feeling like I had been dropped mid series and was missing information critical to the flow of the story. Hopefully things will be elaborated on in the next book. The chemistry between the two characters was lacking. I just didn't see these two as a couple. For a contemporary romance there were very few love scenes. Some of the action scenes were over the top as well. In one scene Shane flips his car like a skateboard in a tunnel in Chicago. The ending was so over dramatic that it was like the author took every police drama and action movie and mashed them together in hopes that readers wouldn't notice the over the top scenario.

***sorta spoiler** But the male was a JERK. I mean seriously, I can't remember him saying one nice thing. This was supposed to be a bit of a romance but he was a jerk, the chick just kept throwing herself at him and then as soon as they sleep together he dumps her "for her own good" because he's an a$$ho!e and knows it. In the future nd were supposed to see how much he actually cares because he risks his precious car for her (the only thing he admits to loving)... Wow. Must be true love. *rolls eyes* I get what the writer means, but I despise this type of 'alpha male'. The story and action/suspense was great but I didnt really dig the characters. Would I recommend this book? Yep. Good book/author despite characters.
The pacy style, and chemistry between the characters, worked well to inject both tension and humour, as the very serious and contained ultra-alpha male hero, Shane, is charged with delivering Cecily (his friend Dex’s sister) to New York, after she escapes an abusive relationship.
As events unfold, the true nature of Dex’s work is revealed, and as well as discovering Shane’s soft-centre, Cecily also learns more about the man she’d escaped from, when she realises that he’d been using her to get information about her brother and the covert group he belongs to.
Car chases, stake-outs, and romance along the way, make this an entertaining, page-turning read.
I got this book because I have a prime membership, and if there was ever a reason to keep my prime (and boy do I need one today) having found this gem is one.
I was hooked from the first page, I love these sort of books. I love these sort of men (even though I shouldn't). Its so cliché and yet I can't help but love this book. Its so hot and I just didn't want to stop reading it when I started this morning.
Really great first book and I'm already excited for another (even though I'm reading this before this is officially released!!)
I so enjoyed this book, it really captures your imagination and pulls you along with the story. It has ; alpha heroes, plucky spirited heroines, sexy romance and thrilling danger. The main female character has spirit and backbone. While the alpha hero is everything you want in a book boyfriend . The author introduces several other characters setting up for further books but this doesn't detract from the main storyline, it just makes me look forward to seeing what happens next.
This is intense, dramatic, romantic and amusing. Cecily is naive, brave and vulnerable. Shane is tough, stubborn and romantic. Together they are steamy, entertaining and fun. The storyline is brilliant and gripping. The characters are intriguing and amusing. It had my complete attention from the first page to the last. I can't wait to read about the rest of the Kings. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Goodreads. This is my voluntary and honest opinion of it.

a good start to a new series. some thrilling moments. I know HEA s are expected, but I think a lot of the Thrill is lost when you know all will be OK. Yeah I know it's the genre but, just for once it would be good to include a sad ending which would keep one on edge for the rest of the series. OK I'll stick to Thrillers pure and simple , I can't have it all. Or can I?
Shane is a great catch, but his life and work are dangerous. Cecily is just running away from a very bad relationship and her brother Dex sends Shane to collect her as he's recovering from a knee operation. This is just the start of one big rollercoaster ride for all three of them. Good story, well written and kept me turning the pages.
Cecily and Shane are compatible in more ways than one. Their upbringing, friends and their definition of what is normal. Cecily doesn't care. She has found the one person who makes her feel safe. Shane still believes he doesn't deserve her. He will always keep her safe. Love the ending.
This was like a rollercoaster with its ups and downs. I felt so much with these characters that I couldn't put the book down. The espionage and the mercenaries were so cool that it just added to an awesome story.
I enjoyed this book and found there was a good combination of suspense and romance. That said the book was difficult to get into as Shane was very rude at the beginning yet she kept thinking how nice he was.
Not badly written, but it was a little too much porn for me. It seems to go from talking about f**kin' each other to why they can't be together. Then more explicit sex. There's very little suspense. If it was not an audible book I would not have finished it.
Not my usual read, thrillers are my thing, but a delightful romance with likable characters a little bit of action and a little bit steamy in places lo!. A good read
All I will say is I am glad I didn't pay for this book. The first 80% of the book wasn't much fun to read and although the final 20% is better, it didn't warrant moving to a 3* book.
