A Small Book of Unicorns

Rate this book
The unicorn is a creature of dreams, appearing in whatever guise we give a beast of solitude and beauty, a creature of force, wisdom, or calm. This lovely little book explores its magical world, invoking the spirit of the unicorn with imaginative, insightful poetry and prose, and ethereal, magical paintings by Jay Burch. Burch’s unicorn paintings have been Pomegranate favorites for many years. 96 pages, 90 full-color reproductions, 8 7/8 x 5 7/8". Smythe-sewn paperbound book.

I really fell in love with this book, even though I'm 48 years old and not a child anymore. I've always had a special place in my heart for unicorns. I’ve loved them since I was a child and, even though it sometimes makes me feel silly, I still adore them now. This sweet little book is gorgeous, dreamy and incredibly magical. I wish this book had been published when I was young. The artwork by Jay Burch is so soothing and peaceful. I wish they had published this book as a hardcover with much larger pictures. But, this slim paperback is just wonderful. Although there is a little bit of history, folklore and legend added to the beginning of the book, the rest is filled with even more lovely paintings of unicorns and poetry. If you or anyone you know has an interest in unicorns, they will adore this book! It would make a lovely gift.

The only redeeming quality was the artwork, and even that was at times juvenile (there were pictures where the unicorns didn't even have hooves, just rounded stumps at the bottoms of their legs). If you're REALLY into fantasy art, perhaps you'll be more forgiving. As for the text, skip it. ALL of it.
