There had to be at least one healthy branch on his family tree...

Who can he trust?

Ben Taylor, widower and father of four lively children, enjoys his easy, uncomplicated life. He likes his work and has a competent nanny to manage his household. Everything is good until he decides to seek out his biological parents and discovers a family tree with tangled roots and broken branches.
His comfortable life crumbles when he gets caught up in a criminal network of fraud and conspiracy at his new job. When Ben is forced into a dangerous alliance, he scrambles to find a safe situation and protection for his children before setting out to clear his name—all without getting himself killed in the process.

A nanny with a past...

Becoming a nanny was the perfect solution when Teresa Cooper needed a place to hide ten years ago, but now that she’s no longer in danger, she’s ready to move on and make a new life for herself. When Ben asks her to take the children to an unknown relative in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, she finds herself in hiding again, this time with four children in tow.
As the children explore the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, Teresa begins to wonder about God’s plan for her future. Who is this stranger Ben trusts with his children? Why here? Can a city-bred nanny find joy in this wild corner of God’s creation?

As a young widower, father of four, and therapy assistant, Ben Taylor is an incredibly busy man. However, when he decides to pursue a chance to find his birth family, he isn’t prepared for the shock such an undertaking will have on his life. Then when his job begins spinning out of control through a bizarre (although carefully planned) set of events, his family’s lives are put in danger, and a reclusive artist in the backwoods of Michigan turns out to be his father, is there any way he can keep everyone safe and not go crazy at the same time? And what is he to do, now that he has a blood relative to think about?

The paragraph above only captures a tiny segment of this story. It’s an intense twist of family, moral standards, and a whole lot of other things I can’t even put in words. It’s women’s fiction, yes, but there’s only a smidgen of romance (from a fairly unexpected direction!). While not overtly Christian, this does include some Christian principles too along the way. A nice long fulfilling read, and a fun ride at the same time. I loved this book, and can’t wait to see what the author writes next!

Cathe Swanson has done it again. In Baggage Claim, you'll find fun, unique characters in interesting settings and with enough twists and turns to keep you from predicting every next move.

One of my favorite parts of this book is how she used every component of the story in a fresh way. We have a single dad. But his story isn't your typical father that we've seen a million times. You have someone searching for biological parents, but this isn't a Hallmark moment, folks. I guarantee they don't and won't ever make a card for this moment! Deadbeat dad? Yep. Almost won't recognize him, though! Battered wife? Yep! Sheltered homeschool girl?

Seriously, folks. That one right there is worth reading the book for all by itself. This sheltered girl can babysit my kids ANY day.

You get introduced to the unique folks up in the Upper Penninsula, travel the freeways of Chicago, and if that's not enough for you, fine. How about a trip to Disney World?

If you love real kids with interesting, if not sparkling, personalities, flawed humans struggling to make it in a flawed world, Christians leaning more on Jesus every day, and enough suspense to make the book exciting without being a full-on, edge-of-your-seat joy ride, I'd say Baggage Claim is for you!

My only complaint? I have to wait to read the next in the series!

I received an advance copy from the author while I wait for the signed copy I ordered. The review and opinions are mine.

I love how Cathe Swanson constantly surprises me! In her debut novella, Snow Angels, I wasn’t sure what to expect and ended up being absolutely delighted with the story and the characters and the writing style. In this case, with Baggage Claim, I thought I knew how certain plot elements would play out … and once again, Swanson took my expectations and gave them her own flavor.

Everybody has baggage. Take Ben, for instance. He’s not your typical single dad. His young wife died tragically, needlessly, and left him to take care of their four children in all his naivete. His search for his birth parents has some surprising (and at times heartwrenching) ups and downs, and his relationship with the nanny did not at all go the way I anticipated when I first started reading. (This is not a bad thing – it worked out so much better than it would have if I were in charge! Which is why I just blog. LOL.)

Speaking of the nanny, Teresa has her own share of baggage. While she would certainly run circles around Mary Poppins, Teresa’s painful backstory has her getting some inspiration from Mrs. Doubtfire and Nanny McPhee too. She may look 55 on the outside but inside she’s still in her thirties and tentatively open to another – safer – chance at true love.

And then there’s Jonah…. but you’ll have to meet him and his baggage on your own.

Bottom Line: Baggage Claim by Cathe Swanson is a heartwarming story about family and trust… and what we do with the baggage we claim. A dash of suspense propels the story forward, and an unexpected romance charms the heart. The kids are adorably written, their personalities spot-on for their ages, and the threads of faith are naturally incorporated without feeling preachy. Fans of Deborah Raney will love Cathe Swanson’s books too!

This novel has two plot lines. One is Ben, a single father of four delightful children. Ben had been adopted and is now looking to discover his birth parents. In the course of the novel he unwittingly gets involved in an insurance fraud scam. I learned quite a bit about how the scam worked and how I should pay attention to my medical bills. That was quite interesting.

The other plot line revolves around Teresa, a woman who escaped from her abusing husband and is now a nanny. Ben has hired her and she turns out to be a great nanny.

Much of the novel is about Ben's job. He is an assistant physical therapist and we readers tag along with his appointments. We also get to experience some of the home life of Ben and the kids and the very capable nanny Teresa.

There is a little bit of suspense as Ben fears for his family's welfare while the insurance scam is being investigated. There is also a little bit of romance, but not much. Ben seemed to be a little naive while Teresa is a savvy woman. Ben's kids are the real show stoppers, however. Their characters are well crafted and fun.

I felt the novel was a bit long for the intertwined plots. The relationship focus of Teresa changes in the latter part of the novel as does the plot focus. That was a bit of a surprise after so much of the first part of the novel having been focused on Ben. The Christian message included was well done.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Baggage Claim is full of suspense, mystery and learning to trust God. Ben Taylor doesn’t know who he can trust, being a widower and father to four children, Ben has always enjoyed his life until he tries to seek out his biological children and finds so many tangled roots and broken branches. Then his life takes a nose dive when he gets involved with a criminal network and fraud at his job. All he wants to do his find a safe place for his children before he even tries to clear his name.

Teresa Cooper has hidden herself for 10 years and decides she is safe now and is ready to move on. Being the many to Ben Taylor’s children she never thought he would ask her to take his children to a relative in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and stay with them. This puts her new life to a stop. She finds her self in hiding again but this time with four children. Being a city girl, will she be able to enjoy God’s country? Will her past catch up with her? Who exactly did Ben trust with his children?

Baggage Claim is A Great Lakes Novel written by Cathe Swanson. A great mystery/suspense novel that you will throughly enjoy. I don’t read a lot of Suspense novels, Baggage Claim is one I enjoyed.

"Baggage Claim" (A Great Lakes Novel) by Cathe Swanson

We all carry our own baggage -- literally and figuratively. We pick up pieces along the way from the time we are very young until we are very old. No one is immune. What we do with the baggage and how it affects our lives at different points along the way is up to each of us.

Some carry their baggage as a badge: "Look what I picked up and what I have learned from it!" Some carry it as a weight: "I have all this I am carrying with me, it definitely wears me down." And some are oblivious to the baggage they are carrying and how it is affecting their lives.

In "Baggage Claim," each of the characters has past events and experiences which become the baggage they are carrying with them. Some have dealt with it (for the most part), some are coming to terms with it, and others have no real understanding of how their baggage is affecting them...until something happens and suddenly they have to make adjustments and either carry the weight of their baggage or directly address it.

There are adoption issues, biological parent issues, aging adults, very young adults, a single father, a dedicated (too dedicated??) nanny, and of course issues abound even without children ages almost 2, almost 6 and 7!!

Cathe Swanson has written a gem of a novel. It is lighthearted, serious, funny, and truly wonderful. The characters are realistic, honest, relatable, and, of course, flawed. The storylines are enjoyable and weave together seamlessly to create a truly wonderful and enjoyable novel.

I am already looking forward to the next book in this series...

Baggage Claim by Cathe Swanson is a cracking contemporary Christian thriller that I devoured, with heart racing as the action hotted up.
There are many themes including that of roots - everyone needs to know where they came from and no-one is ever an 'accident' - God planned out all of our lives before we were born. God's plans are so much greater than our own and we can trust Him with our lives.
There are the difficult topics of violence and women's shelters, alcoholism, drugs and teenage pregnancies - all areas of life that help to make the novel realistic to read. God can be found even in the midst of suffering. "She was glorifying God in that place, under those circumstances, and her church supported her." church is important. Church can be our family too.
The theme of survival is linked to the theme of suffering. "She was just a living testimony." Our lives should reflect what God has done and is doing. "I don't want my testimony to be about what God has saved me from. I want a testimony about what He has done in me since."
Family is really important. "All children should have that - safe homes." All children should be cherished and loved. There are some truly delightful moments in the novel surrounding four young children. The love and protection for them simply oozes from the pages of the novel and warms the readers heart. "The kids weren't a heavy burden, they were his purpose."
The nanny in the novel is very reminiscent of Mary Poppins - firm but loving and entirely capable in all situations.
The theme of guilt arises in the story. Past events which produce feelings of guilt cannot be altered. The guilt needs to be given to God and progress into the future commenced.
Within the pages there are suspicion and intrigue. The readers heart races and pulses rise as the novel moves towards its conclusion.
It is never too late to have a new beginning. No matter how old you are, a new beginning is possible with God.
I really loved Baggage Claim. It was my first book by Cathe Swanson but I shall be reading more. Warm, welcoming and a marvellous storyline and lovable characters - a fabulous read.

Interesting plot lines and personalities.

Baggage Claim has a variety of plot angles. It has a touch of mystery, a touch of romance, a touch of family drama. It’s all written with a feel-goodness that touches the heart. The characters are realistic with all-too-human flaws. All except for the indomitable nanny, of course. The children have real personalities unlike some books where they are just thrown in for good measure. It was a pleasure to read and would be enjoyable to a wide audience. I won a copy of this book from the author through her newsletter. I voluntarily wrote this review.

Enjoyable. A little suspense, a little romance. The first half started a little slow (for me) but picked up and kept my interest until the end. Found the ending a bit abrupt but that must be the set up for the next in the series.

Baggage Claim by Cathe Swanson is part of her Great Lakes series and is her first full-length novel. “No one is promised a normal family, dear, and we all grow up anyhow.” And for sure there are not normal family ties in this story. Ben is a clueless young widower with 4 very active children to provide and care for. Teresa is the young, pretending to be old, nanny who has been hired by Ben's parents to care for Ben and the kids. And then there is Jonah, another widower who is soon to find out he has a family. The dynamics of their interactions are great, dialogue is realistic and the story moves quickly along as there are a number of twists and turns to the plot. Insurance fraud, parenting, adoption, and alcoholism are all topics explored or touched upon with a thread of faith in a gracious God woven throughout the story. Do we have to claim our baggage? We all have it--usually a whole trunkful. Can Ben keep his children safe? Will he ever learn to stand on his own two feet and just who can he trust? What about Teresa's past...will she ever be free from the fears and tears from the life she lived? The author leaves a few questions unanswered so this reader is hoping for a sequel to fill in more of the story of these fun, likable characters!

I don’t read a lot of Mysteries or Romantic Suspense, but I am trying to broaden my reading scope. So when Baggage Claim by Cathe Swanson became available, I thought I would give it a try.

And I enjoyed reading it, and am looking forward to trying more books by Ms. Swanson and more in this particular genre.

Ben Taylor is the main character, and I will admit it took me awhile to like him. He’s not evil, or a villain, just sheltered. He found himself in a hard place early in life and his parents helped him out of it, and have continued to help him. However, it has stunted his emotional growth and at twenty-five, he seemed much younger than a widowed single father of four children should have! I’m not saying he should’ve been completely mature (I certainly wasn’t at his age) but he was naïve and couldn’t even clean the house or do laundry! But as he gets embroiled in a potential fraud case and it becomes dangerous for him and his family, he grows as a character and the place he is in at the end of the book is satisfying.

Luckily, he has Teresa Cooper, who is a nanny for Ben’s children. She initially became a nanny to hide from an abusive ex-husband who had vowed to harm her after he was released from jail. Teresa is extremely competent and handles the four children, and Ben, with skill and dedication. She’s aware of Ben’s failings and is trying to gently steer him into being more involved as a father, but she’s also tired. She is pondering what she wants out of her life once she will no longer be needed as a full-time nanny and when she is forced to go into hiding, discovers what she really wants.

Jonah Campbell is the third main character, and he’s delightful. He is an important part of Ben’s story (though I don’t want to spoil who is actually is, though we find out fairly quickly into the story) and he’s a well-rounded, competent character who handles the changes that Teresa, Ben, and his family bring to his life with grace and humor.

The book itself is well-written, with good descriptions, especially of the scenery. The characters do a lot of introspection and also a lot of talking, which is refreshing! A lot of authors rely on the characters not communicating to cause conflict, but the three main characters in Baggage Claim communicate wonderfully.

Both Teresa and Jonah are believers, and they do attend church and talk about their relationship with God, but I did not feel the Christian message overshadowed the book itself. If you like your books with an extreme focus on religion you may not like this book as well as I did.

I recommend this book to those readers who enjoy Christian mystery/suspense novels and give this book 4/5 stars for the good characters, setting, and the subtle yet sincere Christian message flowing through it.

[ I have voluntarily read and reviewed this book]

“No one is promised a normal family, dear, and we all grow up anyhow.”

This is a story of being lost and found in love and in faith. Teresa Cooper remakes herself from abuse victim to "nanny" of four small kids as well as a young father who also needs a bit of a nanny. Ben Taylor was widowed at 24 because of a drunk driver. As the only child adopted by a loving couple, he is beginning to build a life as an adult and not finding it easy struggling with school, work and his kids.He gets discouraged as he finds his biological mother's family traumatized by the secret of his birth, and part of his road to maturity is finding some more pieces of his puzzle with the journey to his biological father: an artist in the rural area of Michigan who had no idea he existed!

And then Ben stumbles upon a situation at work that might actually take all of this away.

Set in Northern Illinois and the Upper end of Michigan, Swanson has developed a story that we will relate to as much as it might confound us. Can someone be manipulated as Ben was? Can he ever have peace around his losses? Will he be a good father? Will Teresa come out of hiding? How will this truly blended family save each other?

I loved this funny, smart and thoughtful book. I liked how faith, or lack of it, is just a part of the story in a world that might discourage that. I live how each child has a separate personality and how Teresa, and later Jonah, recognize it since they interact more closely with them. And, although you are supposed to not like the "bad guys", even they are well drawn.

When I finished this book very early this morning,I realized I will miss these people....and am eagerly awaiting Swanson's next book. Highly recommended.

This book is one of those I couldn't lay down once I started it. It is loaded with interesting, fun, realistic, complex characters. It has a clear Christian message without sermons. There is humor, intrigue, romance, mystery, and leaves the reader wanting more. Wonderful book. Ms. Swanson has a winner once again. I am so looking forward to more books from her and hope that some of those will continue the story of the characters in Baggage Claim!

People have a lot of baggage they carry around with them. Most of us would just as soon check our baggage and never claim it again. You would think that a book with the kind of baggage that the characters have in Baggage Claim (abusive marriage, death of young wife and mother, dysfunctional birth family) would be depressing and disheartening. In fact, the book has the characters live beyond their circumstances and it provides plenty of light hearted silliness. It is a book told from many points of view, but it is done in such a way that it is never confusing. The mystery/suspense element concludes in a way that is unexpected and cute at the same time. This book is part of a series. It certainly leaves plenty of scope for more things to happen to the characters you come to know and love, but I will say that I felt satisfied with the ending of the book. I didn't feel like I was left in limbo with an abrupt stop. This book is a pleasant way to spend a few hours, some laughing, some thinking and a bit of suspense along with some very cute kid moments.

The thing that stands out the most to me about this book is that it is unique and doesn't follow any formula for novels I've ever heard of. I read it without even reading the summary so I had no clue where the book was going for the vast majority of it, and that is a fun and very unusual occurrence for this avid reader. The writing is excellent and the characters very complex. In fact, if I have any complaint at all, it is that the characters were so complex that it took a little too long to introduce everybody with their back-stories and get this story rolling. It was worth it though as, despite the slow-ish start, the book is definitely worth reading, and I have no doubt I will even re-read it at some point, which for me, is the mark of a great book. If you're tired of the same-old, same-old storylines and plots in Christian fiction, this is definitely the book for you!

Such a spell-binding book

Cathe Swanson has written an amazing book in Baggage Claim. Everyone brings and acquires "baggage" throughout their lives. This book brings out how hard things often build character and give strength. From a Chicago to Disney World to the Upper Peninsula, this book will take the readers on an amazing journey.

With a single father of four to a nanny with her own secrets to insurance fraud, this book takes the reader on a veritable rollercoaster of emotions. I could not help but get drawn into the story. I thoroughly recommend this book!

The cover of this book immediately attracted my attention!! What a delightful scene, the sweet feet of a baby girl on Daddy's sneakers!! Who can resist opening this book, once your heart is caught up in this adorable picture?

I was caught up in this story immediately and found it very difficult to put this book down. The characters are realistic and so believable that the reader quickly becomes emotionally involved with them in their heartbreaks and trials that they encounter. They have their flaws just as you and I do. Teresa was an unusually strong individual that held this young family together in the toughest of times, while Ben was a struggling dad of four youngsters, trying to keep afloat while trying to keep his sanity. His helplessness was felt deep within as this novel progressed.

The plot moves quickly with just enough twists and turns to keep one on the edge of the chair. Just when you think the road of life becomes a bit smoother, another block appears. The underlying message of faith and trust in God in the darkest moments of life keeps the reader hopeful of a happy ending.

The clear message of God's saving power shines through this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I am eagerly awaiting another book from this author!!
This book was received as a gift. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.

After reading Cathe Swansons first book, "Snow Angels", it was a given that I would be reading her second book. "Baggage Claim" incorporates a few familiar faces from the first book, and, while readers are sure to enjoy "Snow Angels", you don't have to read it to fully appreciate "Baggage Claim". For me, this book was about coming of age. Some young, and some not so young. About taking responsibility for your actions. Repentance. Forgiveness. All written in such a way that faith and Christian love wrap gently around the reader, encouraging instead of discouraging. This one was hard to put down....in fact, I didn't! And stayed up until the wee hours to finish it. I eagerly await the next book in the Great Lakes Collection. Cathe Swanson, please make that happen soon!

I really liked "Baggage Claim" by Cathe Swanson.

It is a story about Ben finding his identify and in the middle of his search for his birth parents, he is thrust into a mystery.

This was another one of those books that this reader would have enjoyed more but because of a family tragedy that happened right before reading it, it was a little on the sad side but again I must say I really liked it.

If you like two plots within a story, then this is the book for you. One plot is Ben and his search for his birth family and keeping them safe and the other plot is his nanny's story, her past and how she had to hide from an abusing husband.

I love how the author doesn't just tell that Ben has four kids but tells us readers about their actions. She makes them part of the story.

The scenes were described so well that I could picture them happening.

I think this story would make a really good Hallmark mystery movie.

I recommend "Baggage Claim" by Cathe Swanson to readers of mystery and anyone that wants to see how good can come out of events that are good at the time the characters are going through them.

I am giving Baggage Claim" by Cathe Swanson five stars.

I was giving a complimentary copy by Celebrate Lit and the author.

Let's face the facts, we all come with baggage. In this heartwarming story you will see how two people with plenty of baggage come together. Cathe weaves a wonderful story with a suspenseful twist. First, my heart went out to Ben. I couldn't imagine being a widow to four children! But I thought he did a great job, or as best he could. But I liked the journey of him finding his biological parents. He had to make some tough decisions, and while I may have disagreed with some of them, it just made the storyline that much more interesting!

And who wouldn't love Teresa? Her character really struck a chord with me. She was genuine, strong, but also I sensed a little vulnerability. I loved her interactions with the children in this story, and to be honest, I think they stole the show! I love the personalities that Cathe gave to them. They really put a smile on my face :) I hope there is more to come from these wonderful characters!

This is a book full of many layers. There is so much going on there is never a dull moment. Cathe is a gifted storyteller. She has crafted a story that will certainly engage you.
I was really interested in this book because part of it takes place in Michigan’s upper peninsula, which is one of my favorite places of all time. I love that we get a peek at in the winter.
At first I wasn’t sure how everything was going to connect. We have Teresa’s story of her in hiding and then we have Ben’s story of trying to find his family and also everything that is going on at work. I knew there was something funny (not ha-ha funny) going on there and before long it comes to light.
I dreaded knowing something bad would happen to Ben and his sweet family.
Cathe did a wonderful job of painting Ben’s family life with his kids. So normal but still very interesting.
Overall I really enjoyed this book.

The reader is carefully drawn in and held as the tension builds, characters grow and change, and the plot continues to thicken.

Corruption, collusion, malfeasance abound while complicated and painful pieces of family history are unveiled. A beautiful story of true family and abiding faith. Each character faces a crisis and how they handle it varies depending on their understanding of the essential need for an unwavering faith during life’s challenges.

The title is particularly clever when realizing that the word ‘baggage’ has more than one meaning. This is a thoroughly written and engaging five star read! Thank you, Cathe Swanson for providing us with this thought-provoking look at real family and real love.

Suspense and sweetness

This book caught me right from the start. It did a bit of a slow down after the first third for a bit, but then it sped up to a nail biting pace the last third! There were several different perspectives, well separated by chapter, but I think that might partly be why it felt slow at times. Overall, though, I really enjoyed it. Teresa and Jonah are wonderful characters. Ben is sweetly clueless, but like Teresa observes, he has potential.

The title is a bit of a misnomer, in my opinion, but not a factor that influenced my opinion of the story itself. The setting was beautifully described, the suspense and action were well planned and developed. The main characters are marvelous and have all endured more than their fair share of trouble before finding their way together. I’d love an epilogue or follow on novel!

Isn’t this one of the sweetest covers you’ve seen? Cathe Swanson’s “Baggage Claim” is a read that is full of surprises. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out who the love interest is your thrown a surprise that works out perfectly. Teresa becomes a nanny to four children, five if you count the children’s father. She has her secrets, he has his and together they find the one person who changes both of their lives. Oooooo, are you curious? You should be, Read the Book!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book and at first it didn't really seem to have a specific genre. I also wasn't sure how the different parts fit together. I felt for Ben with his search for his biological family. Once the suspense started coming out, it made me wonder what the "bad guys" were up to and wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen. I thought it was a well written book and kept my attention throughout. Looking forward to reading more books by Cathe Swanson.

I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received.

I loved this book. I could not put this book down. I loved Ben and his four children. He was so lucky to have Mrs. Cooper for a nanny. Ben's parents wish that he would grow up a bit but they keep helping him out. Mrs. Cooper( Theresa) also keeps helping him out of jams. Ben was adopted and is trying to find his birth parents. This story gas laughs and tears. Ben gets in some jams and there is a bit of suspense. I am looking forward to reading many more books by Cathe Swanson. I received this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
