It’s up to Otto (with some help from Zee the Bee) to rescue his friend. Help, Otto, help! This Pre-level 1 Ready-to-Read with bright illustrations and minimal text is perfect for the true emergent reader.
This book is hysterical! It was written for little kids just learning how to read, but fourth graders get a real kick out of it! I let each of my students choose a picture book for me to read aloud. Avery chose this one from a library to be weird. It was so funny. I couldn't read more than one page without the kids rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter.
Pip really wants to hold Otto's balloon, and because Otto is kind, he hands the balloon to the little mouse. But a big balloon only being held by a little mouse, means Pip is going to get quite the ride and may need some help getting back down.
I feel like this is one of those wise but obscure sayings that crazy wise people in cartoons would say, 'Never give a small mouse a big balloon no matter how much it wants it.' Pip is very lucky Otto is a good friend. Cute, but not as funny as some of the other Otto books.
Robot Otto and Mouse Pip go on an adventure. Average of 5 words and 1-2 sentences per page. Illustrations are simple and help contribute to the story. Potential discussion questions: What do you think is going to happen to Pip as he floats away? How do you think Otto could save Pip? The words Zee and bee rhyme; what other words rhyme with Zee and bee?
Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Started with this book as part of the early reading series. This is a cute story about Pip's adventure, with easy words to read; toddler loved and enjoyed how the story goes a full circle in the end.
I understand the pedagogy behind the controlled vocabulary, but I still don't enjoy reading such constrained texts, especially when the words are repeated so much.
I love these early readers, written for those who only have a few words in their reading vocabulary. Much like the "See Jane run" stories, these books are very simple, but the main character is a robot from outerspace who crash landed on earth when he ran out of gas. Now he befriends the animals of the jungle.
In this one, Otto meets Pip, a little mouse who wants Otto's balloon. Holding the balloon, Pip goes up until a bee pops it, and so Pip goes down. Otto has to rescue him.
There are very few words, so with each page, we talk about the pictures, about what is going on in the story, and what the words mean to the story. The drawings are well done and engaging, and there is lots of opportunity for discussion.
Well, this book garnered some belly laughs from my nephew! And from my niece, and my sister, and me.... I have to admire David Milgrim's sense of humor, and his wisdom! What better way to make kids interested in reading than by giving them stories that delight them?
A lot of the stage one easy readers aren't easy enough for my son, but this one came close. He learned the oo sound and the robot and the story kept his interest.
I like it because there's this mouse who just pointed at a balloon. And I think it was his first time pointing. I really like the mouse because he's so sweet. Goodbye!
