Are you hungry? Do not read this! As for me, I am off to make my own BIG pancake ... and hope it doesn't decide to roll away and ... well never mind, that would be giving the ending away!

This is one of those tag along tales like: The Goose Girl, The Old Woman And Her Pig, El Gallo De Boda, and The Gingerbread Man/Boy. I liked the illustrations, especially if you have a big family with different hair colors. I've seen two of the older illustrated versions of this tale.

mama mi przyniosła te książeczkę z pracy i uznałam, że dam jej szansę. pierwszy raz czytałam te historie dla dzieci i zdecydowanie nie spodziewałam się zakończenia 😭

ENG:

Look at that cover! It looks as if an angry mob is running a pancake out of town. "You have threatened our way of life, big pancake! You'll never flapjack in this town again!"

I was hoping for that scenario, but THE BIG PANCAKE is in actuality the tale of the Gingerbread Man with a different sweet treat. I feel as if youngsters, after mastering the reading portion, could look at the pictures and create their own funny pancake story.

A Norwegian Folktale. This story was most likely either Russian or Scandinavian and first written down in Norway in the mid 19th Century. There were versions written around the same time in England, Scotland, and Germany. It may have inspired The Gingerbread Man in America, published in 1875 .

This one was a lot of fun or me because I’ve never come across it before. It was a chain story with a mediocre payoff. Yeah.

This book is about a mom that has some hungry children then she makes a big pancake that runs away. Also the man in this story looks like Rick Astley.

Summery
I really like this book. It's weird and unusual. With a story perfect for those learning to read. It's a cool "join the parade" little story book.

Cover
Taking in this cover you know that the book is old. I don't think many books can take on an old-style art. The cover was taken out of the book but really it works for this book. It's a pretty designed book filled with charm.

Interior
The story is simple and I mean really simple. With that said it's perfect for what it is trying to do. I do want to say... I'll leave my last thought at the end of the review, it's a spoiler.

Art
The art in this book is down right gorgeous! The realistic drawings are something lost in more recent books. I don't know what to say other than I love it all the way down to the creases in the Mother's apron.

SPOILER! It may be a spoiler but it's an interesting concept.
The weird part is that the ending just sort of comes out of no where but i guess that is the point. While everyone is charging like a raging bull toward the pancake the pig uses trickery and sympathetic language to lure the pancake to trust him.
I guess you could say the lesson here is if everyone want's someone from you be leery about those that appear and hang around for no apparent reason because they can hurt you the most. or in this case eat you.

My midlife crisis continues unashamedly with The Big Pancake.
A few pretty major things I never knew about this book as a child:-
1) it's pretty much identical to The Gingerbread Man.
2) How many times we're told that there's "seven, hungry, little boys"
3) How utterly unhygienic it is. Wanting to eat a pancake that's rolling away getting covered in dirt and who knows what else?? No thank you!
4) One particular line in it would have me laughing hysterically many years later!! (It may well have been changed in later editions!!) Hey, blame the midlife crisis for my juvenile behaviour😉😉😉😉

The illustrations are amazing once again in this particular edition and it made me smile which is what we could all do with at the moment!!

Reliving my childhood with these vintage Ladybird "Well-Loved Tales". Along the same story theme as Chicken Licken (which happens to be my favourite) but much less traumatic because at least this time the fox just gets to eat a pancake!
