THE ART OF PERFUMERY, AND METHOD OF OBTAINING THE ODORS OF PLANTS, WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF PERFUMES FOR THE HANDKERCHIEF, SCENTED POWDERS, ODOROUS VINEGARS, DENTIFRICES, POMATUMS, COSMETIQUES, PERFUMED SOAP, ETC. WITH AN APPENDIX ON THE COLORS OF FLOWERS, ARTIFICIAL FRUIT ESSENCES, ETC. ETC.

Yes, that is the whole title. I’m not making this up. :) I really liked this book. It was fun to read about how they obtained the ingredients to make perfume when it was all natural. Natural perfume is better than synthetic perfume any day.

Fascinating book from 1857 describing various types of perfumes, their uses, and how they are obtained from their natural sources. I learned things about history, about botany, about whales and civets, and about beauty customs of the past, though the purpose of the book is largely for manufacturing.

This is a fascinating book that gives the methods and history from the time period when Septimus Piesse lived (back in the 1800's). It is a fabulous reference for the period writer, historian, or curious reader.
