Dr. Ann Louise was recognized as one of the top ten nutritionists in the country by Self magazine and was the recipient of the American Medical Writers Association award for excellence.

She was the first to warn of the environmental hazards of parasites in her classic Guess What Came To Dinner? Parasites and Your Health. In Your Body Knows Best, Dr. Ann Louise was the first to discuss the blood type/weight theory and proclaim that one diet may not be right for every body - an idea that is only now becoming mainstream. She was the first to offer natural remedies for menopausal symptoms in Super Nutrition for Menopause (now in print as Hot Times) and is widely credited as the first to popularize the term “perimenopause” in her New York Times bestseller, Before The Change.

Dr. Ann Louise forged new ways of thinking about obesity early on in her career. She was the first to proclaim that obesity was caused by the lack of dietary fats and the wrong kind of carbohydrates in her book Beyond Pritikin, published in 1988. In Beyond Pritikin, she predicted that the fat-free, carb-rich diet was creating weight gain, sugar cravings, fatigue and diabetes.

Today, she continues to dedicate herself to carving out new landmarks in holistic health and healing based on science and ancient healing arts. Through her many books, website, and blog (Dr. Ann Louise’s Edge on Health), Dr. Ann Louise offers a “virtual” health support system for men and women that provides educational and self-health assessment services to empower people everywhere to achieve total health. Her latest book, a companion to the bestselling Fat Flush Plan, was released in December 2009. Fat Flush for Life, takes a seasonal approach to burn stubborn body fat all year long, integrating groundbreaking new Fat Flush diets with corresponding fitness and wellness programs.

Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS has been considered an expert in her field of nutrition and wellness for decades. She's a prolific author as well. Despite having loved her book about perimenopause, this is the first of her nutrition or diet books I've read.

The update she's made to her Fat Flush plans seem to use the latest science. It's a smart plan that focuses on using different foods that what you might typically choose, but they're all available at your local grocery store or farmer's market.

Gittleman focuses on detoxifying the gallbladder, liver, and lymphatic system as a key element to weight loss and overall health. Most importantly, she explains why in language that's easy to understand. Although she does discuss (and sell) supplements, the tools for detoxifying and nourishes these vital organs are primarily healthy foods, herbs, and spices. The information about how to keep your bile healthy was particularly helpful, since my husband just had his gallbladder (which stores and manages bile) removed.

The Plan has three phases, starting with a three-day intense detox. I cannot imagine venturing on such a strict liquid-only cleanse during the work week. In fact, I think it's irresponsible to encourage a three-day cleanse without even suggesting that people do this during a down time. From what I've experienced and been taught, going all liquid should not be combined with every day levels of activity.

After completing Phase 1, the "Fat Flusher" goes on to Phases 2 and 3. These two phases have lots of menu plans and recipes, since they may potentially stay on them for a long time. However restrictive it may feel, my guess is that it would be possible to maintain this lifestyle with the added motivation of weight and health changes. The way Gittleman writes the plan, there's wiggle room for adding back in dairy and carbs as your program progresses.

A lot of the entree recipes focus on roasting, baking, and stir-frying. But never fear, they include healthy fats and most sound delicious. I was especially intrigued by the idea of Savory Spaghetti Squash Pancakes, Pâté for All Seasons, Ruby Rich Dressing (using beets!), and Coconut Creme Brûlée.

All in all, an interesting approach that I'm likely to test in the coming weeks and months.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and McGraw-Hill Professional for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Written by the renowned nutritionist Dr. Ann Louise, The New Fat Flush Plan is one of the most detailed and excellent guides on getting rid of fat the Scientific way!

I have tried enough diets, suggestions and learned Alternative Medicine to know what really works and what doesn't! This book is a real gem and one that anyone looking to lose fat and keep it off, the right way should read.

This book doesn't just concentrate on weight loss or flushing fat, but rather the Science behind it and how the entire body works as ONE unit - so for any real results, one should really work with their body and ensure all the organs are cooperating.

Over all, it is a book that is not just for eliminating fat from one's body but also for restoring their health and incorporating changes that can make one's life better. What are you waiting for? Grab it NOW!

**I was kindly given an eARC through Net Galley by McGraw-Hill Professional in exchange for an honest review.

Very good plan

My only criticism of the book is that there is significant repetition of foods that are allowed. As a way of eating you can't beat this, and I will be making amendments to how we eat from reading this book.

Lots of good practices here, although some, like grounding, are a little too woo-woo for me. 😀 I like and respect the author's ideas and manner of presenting them.

I had been reading about the Fat Flush Plan over the past few years and finally got a copy of the book and read it during the holidays. It's a great book with many tips for weight loss. It's a bit restrictive, and not something I believe I could ever dedicate myself to, however, for people who are okay with following a strict regimen and buying additional recommended supplements, etc.

This is an update of a book that came out a number of years ago. I had read the earlier book, and tried out the diet. I even lost weight on it. However, I didn't sustain the lifestyle. Perhaps I wasn't ready, as this was before I went gluten-free or learned about paleo or grain-free lifestyles. However, reading the book today, I felt I would still have a hard time sustaining the plan.

The author is very broad in the topics she covers related to how diet can affect health. At times I felt this meant that she over-simplified in her efforts to address so many different issues. A quick example is that she states that one should never cook food in a microwave (only reheat if necessary) because it is hard to get it evenly cooked. However, this is far from a new issue and there are known techniques to ensure proper cooking of microwaved food that have been around many years. Another is that dark meat poultry is not included on the approved food list even though beef chuck is. That didn't make any sense to me.

This is a book for people who like to have a detailed plan to follow so that there are few, if any, questions of what to do in any given situation. One of the things I've learned about myself is that I do better with a simple plan rather than one with a lot of steps to follow. If you like a lot of steps, then this is the plan for you. Not only are there meal plans, but there are other dietary routines to follow between meals and all day long. There are also exercise, journaling, and sleep routines to follow. The plan can keep you busy following it.

The author makes recommendations for specific brands. She does admit that she works for one brand, but provides enough information that you can figure out your own if you don't need the convenience of a ready-made pack of supplements. And those supplements and some of the foods are not cheap. While this is your entire diet that may be okay, but most of the important items are not ones that you are likely to already have in your pantry or refrigerator. This means a large outlay of cash up front. One difficulty with recommending specific brands is the lack of control over what happens with the company after the book is published. For instance, I read a review copy from NetGalley and looked up the brand of water filter recommended. My browser would not let me navigate to the company's website as it was unsafe. Amazon had one listing for the filter and it had no reviews, despite the statement in the book that it was the best available.

Overall, there is much in this book that is covering the same ground as many others today. Yet, this book is based in many more years of practice as the author has worked in nutrition for decades and has updated this book based on research that came out since the first book. For instance, she has added eating certain fats as well as discussing the importance of sleep. What is reported on both of these has changed substantially since the first edition was published.

I was recently diagnosed with NALD - Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease. I started reading this book in search of recommendations for improving living health.
This book is not for me - too much science. Of course, it might be very suitable for other folks who like that sort of thing.
In addition to all the science included in the book, I also reacted negatively to the inclusion of supplements in the recommendations.
I'm interested in a healthy life, eating real food. I'm not interested in manufactured food or manufactured supplements.

A whole new way to think about wants making and keeping you fat. The book has a lot of scientific data that can be hard to make your way thru but the knowledge you gain from it is well worth the effort. I look forward to trying the detox and eating programs the book offers.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

Informative and provides a great reference section for in-depth additional nutrition study.

Not a fan of smoothies, but if that appeals to you there is a variety of recipes given.
