Nothing like a little murder to spice up the holidays. Life was finally starting to feel normal for young witch River Halloway. She just got promoted to head journalist at the Brimstone Press, and she was looking forward to having a quiet holiday at home with her housemates and her new official boyfriend, Jordan. That is, until two mysterious ghosts randomly appear in her bedroom on Christmas Eve morning, and the only thing they remember is that River is meant to be the next victim. Now, not only does River have to spend her holidays solving the mystery of who these ghosts are and how they were killed, but she must find the killer before the killer finds her and turns her into the next victim.
On Christmas Eve River and the girls are staying home this year. While having a nice quiet night, all of a sudden 2 ghosts show up and tell River that "Your next". What in the world does that mean? Of course, the ghosts don't know who they are or why they said that, but they do know that she will be next to be murdered. Can the girls get the ghosts memory back in time to prevent River's demise? Read this comical cozy mystery for the results to how things get done in Brimstone Bay and these witches. I again enjoyed this book in this series. Get your copy and see what happens.
This may well be my first paranormal cozy mystery as the witches help the police determine how a pair of ghosts came to be . . . missing and dead. Set at Christmas in the town of Brimstone Bay, there is charm and humor but most of the characters were inadequately developed within this book, the third in a series. Despite this weakness the tale stands alone (with references to previous adventures) as the unusual plot is exposed and the joys of the season impact all. I swear I was gaining weight from some of the food descriptions! Somehow I feel I want to incorporate the word "spritely" into my review. Since the stories seem to be set around holidays, I'm not sure whether to expect Groundhog Day or Valentine's Day next, but certainly look forward to additional volumes in the series.
Last two books were a bit obvious on the plot and the villain.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I really liked the story line. I did not read the second book, but I was not lost or confused. As with some series you have to read all the books otherwise you don't have all the information. Not so with this series. I just wish there would be more magic. Can't wait for the next one.
I'll never look at Christmas the same way. I really think there's some truth to Mrs Body's thought that you can't get rid of the Christmas spirit, it only grows. At least I like to think so.
Just not a good book. As if written by a middle-schooler, and not a great one at that. Spelling and continuity errors as in previous books in the series. I won’t read these in the future, even for free. :(
From the first page, the reader is thrown into a wild flurry of activity as the main character rolls and leaps to avoid an attack! Then we laugh because it’s a good-natured snowball fight over who ate the last cookie! What a great way to start a story!
River Halloway was outside enjoying the snowfall. She had recently been promoted to head journalist at the Brimstone Press, and had fortunately gotten the newspaper ready early so that the staff could enjoy Christmas. But on Christmas Eve, two ghosts warn her that she is in danger – but they can’t remember anything else! Can River solve the mystery before she becomes the next victim?
This is an adorable story. The closeness of River’s roommates and their fun-loving antics set the tone for the book. All of the characters are perfect and so likeable! The mystery keeps the reader engaged in the outcome. There is enough humor mixed with the suspense to make this a wonderful book for your reading pleasure! The entire series is a delight to read.
I was given an ARC to beta/review this book. I'm giving this book 4 1/2 stars out of 5. There were some minor mistakes. While this is the first book I've read, it's the 3rd in the series! River is a witch, who is living with a group of other wonderful, wacky witches! It's Christmas time! Time to celebrate the season, right? Well, at least these girls try, but they get interrupted by 2 ghosts. After much Christmas singing and release of some holiday spirit, the ghosts finally manage to inform them that River and Jordan are in danger of losing their lives. Their solution? Lock the door of course! But, after River can't get a hold of Jordan, they decide to go to his house to make sure he's ok. This little adventure leads to an even bigger adventure! I laughed out loud at the antics that occurred at the mill. Talk about a conundrum...trying to accomplish a rescue while being FULL of the Christmas spirit! This is a wonderful cozy mystery! I hope many readers will give it a try!
Having read this book I am now worried that I should have started from the beginning of the series. I was able to read the book quite easily from the perspective of the world and the characters, my problem was that I didn't have the draw into the book as I sometimes would. I felt that it was just not pulling me in and I worry that this is because I started with the third book rather than the first.
Really the thing that bothered me was River- I simply did not enjoy her for large portions of the book. She was whiny, overly dramatic, and really quite over the top emotional. From freaking out on her boyfriend when he was away and his cell phone died, to constantly wanting to sleep it seems, I found her a poor person to be following. It was too bad because I actually enjoyed her opinions about the holiday and figuring out where she stood with it. Perhaps from going back to the first book and starting there I will revise my opinion.
River and Jordan are an item. Ghosts pop up with a warning and the action begins. You have the sheriff who nows believes in the paranormal and Brett a friend of Jordan's. There is a mystery to be solved or more people could die. Christmas spirit goes a long ways and ghosts really do help. Enjoy this excellent mystery as I did! The book is well written and the characters have presence and senses of humor. Excellent!
This is a cozy mystery with paranormal elements. River is a witch who is a reporter and has found love with a former cop named Jordan in the earlier books in the series. In this quick read, they face some danger when ghosts tell her that she is next. It turns out someone is after her and her boyfriend and she will need help to keep them safe from harm. I enjoyed the story and it is a good read for Christmas time.
Another great book in the series. I really enjoy these books. They are wholesome fast reads, that keeps you guessing. If you like a good mystery with great characters and humor you will enjoy these books. Waiting for the next one that comes out next month.
I gave this entry in the series a somewhat better rating than I gave the previous. This was brief and full of Christmas merriment. The characters still had a tendency to behave like complete fools. There was the obligatory happy ending
This book had a lot going on and kept me hooked throughout. Love the ghosts and love that it is Christmas related. A very enjoyable book that I highly recommend.
