Kate’s life was in turmoil after the death of her parents. She’d always been protected and sheltered by them. Suddenly she finds herself with a conniving fiancé living under her roof, a powerful businessman with terrorist ties from across the ocean trying to kill her and more family secrets than most American politicians. She was also unaware that a half brother she knew nothing of was about to enter her life. Her situation was getting precarious right at the moment she was least able to cope with it.
CAROLYN BOWEN is a mystery author who calls on her life escapades and an adventurous, imaginative spirit to inspire and entertain. Bowen uses travel as a muse to explore cultures and dialogue to bring her stories to life. Her writing credits include Cross-Ties, a romantic adventure; The Long Road Home, a contemporary crime fiction mystery; The Sydney Jones Mysteries, and The Family Legacy Series.

This week I had the opportunity to read Carolyn M. Bowen’s book "The Long Walk Home." It’s rare that I don’t finish a novel, but I must be honest and admit that I didn’t finish this one. The description sounded intriguing enough; so much so that I was genuinely looking forward to reading it. However, roughly fifteen pages in, I decided to stop. The main reason is that the novel reads like a first draft manuscript instead of a polished product. I could see where Bowen was headed with her story; it’s a solid plot line with excellent potential. Even so, there were just too many scene transitions and not enough character/scene development to care about the story. It left me feeling a bit of whiplash and entirely confused.
As a fellow writer, I respect the hard work and courage it takes to write any story, let alone share it with the world. I hope that Bowen has a chance to flush this story out a bit more and releases a second edition. I would be honored to read her work again.
I loved reading this book so much. I received this book through Booktasters in exchange for a review. Carolyn has entwined many lives and weaved a great story around them. Kate McClellan is the central character to this tale of corruption, deceit, and money lust. She's suffered the death of her parents in a tragic accident. Following the accident she inherits a large estate and amount of money. As well as this she then has to contend with the end of her relationship with her fiance. Because she has had such a protected and sheltered upbringing she now has to contend with adjusting to a life on her own, and survive attempts on her life while working things out. Everyone she loved or trusted is either dead or deserving of it. Her now ex fiance has links with terrorists, and on top of that a man at her father's company, Lance Goodman, the man she has grown up with and trusts as though he were an uncle, actually has a life she was completely unaware of, and has created the horrendous circumstances she finds herself in. She finds out that there was more to her parents deaths than it first appeared. After a very traumatic time, the details of which I'll let you read for yourself, she finds love and friendship in Jake (now her fiance) and Michael (her half brother, of which she formerly knew nothing about). I'd like to read more of Carolyn's work, and more of this story to find out if her life is back on track, or if trouble finds her once again.
I liked the story. It held my interest even though I had a couple of problems with it. I liked a lot of the characters. The ones I didn't I wasn't suppose to. The story moved along at a fast pace and was filled with intrigue. Which brings me to my problems with it. Point of view changed a few times during the story. I can handle that when the author keeps me in the know. With this story, they changed with no real warning or break. Several times I was jarred out of the story by the abrupt change in POV. In all honesty, when I find this in a book the storyline has to have gotten my attention. It is one of the things can can cause me to shelf a book as, "did not finish". The other problem I had was with the character Ken. I felt that there really wasn't any closure with him and I was left hanging. I don't want to go totally into who and why because it would be a spoiler. I would rather you read the book and judge yourself. I mention for the authors benefit. Despite those issues that I had with it, I really enjoyed the book. I kept turning pages to see how things would turn out. Thank you to BookTasters and the author for bring the book to my attention for review consideration.
Kate, after confirming that her fiance is a dastardly cheat, finds herself in quite a predicament. She breaks off the engagement and all hell breaks lose. Little did she know that her fiance had ties to all kinds of low life criminals - and now they are after her and her estate. While the story itself is a real roller coaster ride, the author still manages to slow things down long enough to take in the scenes of the Charleston area and the Florida coast. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, it is a suspenseful ride that i highly suggest you climb aboard immediately.
Excellent job Carolyn - I look forward to all of your future novels.
I started reading this romance thinking I would enjoy a soft love. However, this book is more than a gentle romance, it is also a great mystery and thriller. Is anyone who we really think they are? This book ties in family betrayal, terrorism, loss, travel, unknown fortune, threats, and more. I liked it.
Based on a five-star rating, I give it five stars! 1) Buy from the author in the future? Yes 2) Did it keep me intrigued? Yes 3) Story line adventurous, mysterious, and believable? Yes 4) Would I recommend to a family member/friend? Yes. 5) Did my idea of the book based on the cover remain the same after I read the book? Yes. The art on the cover led me to believe it was a nice, quiet, walk in love. However, just like in the book, looks can easily hold more than one meaning and then circle back to the original meaning. (Nice soft walk turns adventurous leading back to the original path). The cover is a great representation of the story.
Kate, engaged to Ken, discovers that he likes to look at dubious material on the internet including dating websites. She decides to leave but has no idea of some of the contacts he has. Little does she know but he is after he by any method he can find.
The death of her parents some months earlier has left Kate in a quandary. She is now an heiress which would help to shape her future.
I like the main characters and the plot had lots of twists and turns. This was not just a romance, but a thriller and mystery as well.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to NetGalley for this opportunity.
It is very unusual nowadays to see a romance book without a hint of sex, I guess that will be very appealing and refreshing, or a total turn off! As our main characters life unravels, death and deception all around, she manages to surround herself with good people, who all together pull through the mess and create a much better life. It kept me hooked with the murder mystery and adventure, but it still felt warm and relaxed throughout - a nice combination!
A fast-paced mystery romance with twists and turns for Kate McClellan, who finds herself in the middle of intrigue after her parents die in a car accident. Overnight Kate becomes an heiress discovering family secrets riddled with half-siblings, intrigue, greed, and lost memories. I liked this book, it was an enjoyable read.
The Long Road Home by Carolyn Bowen begins with its main character Kate. She has just lost her mother and father in an automobile accident. Kate is now the only heir to the family estate, at least this is what she believes to be true. After leaving Ken her fiancé, Kate secretly escapes her South Carolina home and travels to Florida where she moves into her grandmother's Antebellum home. In an attempt to start over and discover herself, she suddenly finds her life interrupted by a terrorist taking revenge on the family, a fiancé that has hired a private investigator to locate her and an uncle with secrets and motives of his own. Although this fiction book was not long at all, Bowen's story never felt rushed or fell short of any crucial information that would hinder the flow of the story from progressing to the next chapter.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The Long Road Home is the story of how life gets turned upside down after the death of Kate McClellan's parents who died in a suspicious car accident. Her fiancé Ken is only using her to advance in her father's law firm and benefit from her wealth. While she's trying to escape and end her relationship with Ken, someone is trying to kill her and there's a list of possible suspects. She befriends a hired investigator A.J. and a local rancher, Jake who want nothing more than to protect her and find the person who wants to hurt her.
Kate, A.J. and Jake were well developed characters. I especially liked Michael because he turned out differently then what I expected. The story kept me intrigued and eager to find out who was trying to hurt Kate, and the truth of what happened to her parents. I liked learning about Kate's family history.
The book did seem to be fast paced. I felt some events happened too quickly and the story jumped from one setting to another so suddenly. However, I enjoyed the story. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys mystery.

The Long Road Home by Carolyn M. Bowen is a thriller/mystery novel. Kate McClellan is a woman who seems to have a pretty good life: she has a great job at an ad agency and a wonderful fiance named Ken. Out of nowhere, though, Kate’s parents are killed in an automobile accident which leaves Kate feeling lost. Despite this pain, she manages to move on with her life and is ready to be married.
Time moves forward and the day before her wedding she discovers Ken has been on x-rated sites and has practically cheated in their relationship. She is fed up with his behavior and feels the need to leave him. She escapes to her grandmother’s plantation in Florida, a place she knows where Ken could never find her. But little does she know that as well as a powerful businessman, Ken is a man who has ties with terrorists across the country. These people are trying to kill her to take over her family business. Will Kate be able to hide? Or will she end up alone, left for dead by her evil fiance?
The action-packed plot of this novel leaves you with a long-lasting punch. A thriller indeed, The Long Road Home manages to consistently keep you on the edge of your seat. The story starts right away, leaving no time to waste in learning about Kate’s hectic life. As the plot moves forward, I loved that I had the chance as a reader to connect the dots between all of the people and what they had done in their past.
It really makes you think about the people you let into your life and what their intentions are- Ken is such a sleaze-ball and I felt so bad that Kate had a man like him in her life. I was really rooting for Kate the whole way through and while I won’t spoil the ending, I will say that her ending is a bit of a twist. But it is an enjoyable twist and I’m glad that she got the ending that I feel she deserved.
I liked reading this book because after I finished I felt like I had been on a wild ride. Bowen’s writing is great. The way she manages to create such an interesting story helps show off her enticing style. The pacing of the story is fast-paced, which was mostly done well, however I felt like it started off moving a little too quickly for my taste. But I am not much of a mystery/thriller reader and I think a lot of people will appreciate the way the story sucks you right in from the beginning.
The component of this story that got me most excited was the characters presented, their relationships and the suspense that came with discovering more secrets about them. I believe people who enjoy reading or watching action or adventure novels/movies will be over the moon for this book.
This is a good story with a couple of interesting twists.Kate has lost her parents and was thinking of marrying a man named Ken. Then she finds out he's not the man she thought and Kate heads to Geneo, Florida to her family's home, to get away. Things aren't as they seem and Kate's life is going to be turned upside down. The author has a good writing style that makes for a quick read. She also adds just the right amount of mystery, past and present to make this a book to pick up.
I received a copy of 'The Long Road Home' in exchange for an honest review. Someone wants Kate McClellan dead. There are plenty of suspects: her ex-fiancé, a half-brother she didn't know of, a family enemy with ties to terrorism, and closer to home, her recently deceased father's business partners. This book is rich in detail, with twists and turns starting on the first page and continuing throughout.
A complex plot, sprinkled with romance and loaded with southern charm, this book is an entertaining read.
I was given a free copy for an honest review. Although I didn't love this book, I liked it. The story was fast paced, very detailed and unpredictable. There were parts where it felt quite rushed, but given the fast pace of the book, it can be ignored. The plot didn't lose its relevance (which happens a lot with books like these). But thos book is not without its faults. I couldn't connect with the charecters, and as mentioned before, the story felt rushed. Overall, I feel it was worth a read.
This is a complex story involving murder, mystery and romance. It is full of emotions and twists and turns that will keep you wondering if Kate will be able to cope with all that is happening to her and her family.
I felt that the plot and characters were well developed. Even though this was a murder mystery, I felt relaxed while I was reading it. It is a good story to read while in front of a fireplace with a glass of wine or hot chocolate. I as given this book and I enjoyed reading it.
This story weaves together all of the elements I love to experience when reading a novel : exotic places, romance and suspense. My interest was piqued from the beginning and throughout. Enjoy!
Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite The Long Road Home is a romantic suspense novel written by Carolyn Bowen. Kate’s one bulwark after the sudden, tragic deaths of her mom and dad had been her relationship with Ken, her fiancé. It had been a difficult four months, and Kate still wondered about the accident that claimed their lives. Ken and Kate had been set on spending a sunny day at nearby Folly Beach when he was called in for a meeting at the firm Kate’s father had established and where Ken was an associate. They had both hoped he’d be making partner, though, but now everything was up in the air. In his haste, Ken had left his laptop open, and Kate noticed the dating website that he had been browsing. She was stunned to find that and other similar sites in his history. They were engaged, and he was already looking for other women?
After losing her parents, this betrayal had her fuming and far too angry to confront him at that point. Instead, the young heiress decided to pack some belongings and move to her Grandmother Leah’s plantation house on the Gulf Coast. Seagrove represented all that was love and home and warmth, and she loved the beach and crystalline waters. It would take some settling in, but that in itself would help her heal. Any feelings for Ken had magically been cleansed away, and Kate was determined to move on. What she had no way of knowing was that her family had secrets, and her life was in danger.
Carolyn Bowen’s romantic suspense novel, The Long Road Home, is an exciting and well-written story about a relatively sheltered young woman whose loss of her parents has put her in the cross-hairs of a vindictive international killer. I especially enjoyed seeing how Kate finds her inner strength and resilience as she tackles the restoration of her grandmother’s plantation home and finds new friends and interests. The beaches she visits had me pining for an extended vacation on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Bowen’s characters are credible and well-defined, especially Kate, Jake, AJ, and Nap. Bowen’s plot is taut and twisty, and she gives plenty of red herrings for armchair sleuths. The Long Road Home is highly recommended.
Review:
👉Talking about the title of the book, the title of the book is really so interesting to read.
👉The cover is appealing and attractive as well.Writing style is appreciable .Kate’s life is definitely full of that. The major downfall happened in her life when her parents passed away in a car crash. Life isn’t a cake walk, you can’t imagine walking down a bumpy road and hoping that you won’t fall.Soon she found her comfort in her fiancé but was he easy? Nope. He wasn’t a very loyal one and was insanely rich. Not an easy thing to digest for Kate. Moving ahead in time, her lost half-brother came back in her life. It’s quite dramatic, oh gosh! There are lots of secrets, suspense, thrill, lies, action, mystery, cheating, deception and what not. I may name it as the perfect thriller as of now. The story moved fast but it didn’t become boring even for a bit. It’s a 100%-page turner for me.
I randomly came across this wonderful book while searching for a good novel to read and the curiosity to know what lies within the pages consumed me. The cover and the title grabbed my attention and I couldn't resist reading it, hoping for it to be an interesting read and I'm glad to say that it lived up beyond my expectations.
This is a great combination of action, suspense, mystery, with great twists and turns. Carolyn has done a wonderful job with the storyline - Imaginative and intriguing! The story effectively spans a mystery world while presenting an engaging story. I really liked the character of Kate, I enjoy reading stories with brave and story woman. With so many hidden secrets, it's really difficult for her to survive peacefully. Every page made me curious to read about the new secret.
Carolyn has a flair in language use. She employs the right words at all the right moments to make us feel exactly what she intends us to feel, and see exactly what she wants us to see. With this ability at hands she creates a fine balance. The characters, be it the main protagonists or otherwise, are solidly drawn and interesting, as lovable as they are flawed. It’s a well written book, the storyline is well thought out and it has characters that you come to love, others you despise, others you fear.
I enjoyed this story so much and I am very much interested in reading more books from this author.
We meet Kate McClellan just as her life is unravelling horribly. Her parents have been killed in a horrific car accident and she's discovered the fiancé that should be supporting her is a manipulative cheat.
So Kate decides to take time out from her busy job at an ad agency and flees to the sanctuary of her late Grandmother's plantation in Florida.
Welcomed instantly into the close knit community, Kate has little idea that her ex-fiancé is not going to let her go without a fight and hires a private investigator to track her down. Meantime, more plot twists are revealed. There's a secret half brother Kate knew nothing about, and her ex-fiancé's dark side is revealed to be even darker than we originally thought...
Kate's huge family inheritance makes her irresistible to these dark souls, determined to track her down and finish the job in eliminating the family in order to inherit their fortunes for themselves.
I found the book easy to read. It's chick lit meets Agatha Christie, with a liberal dose of Southern charm. The changes of narrator helped give a complete picture of what was going on, motives and intentions of the multiple characters.
Who doesn’t like reading a story full of twist and turn? Well, this is the right point where you’ve come. Kate’s life is definitely full of that. The major downfall happened in her life when her parents passed away in a car crash. Life isn’t a cake walk, you can’t imagine walking down a bumpy road and hoping that you won’t fall.
Soon she found her comfort in her fiancé but was he easy?
I could connect with the characters, if not relate. Kate, our protagonist, depicted a strong character. She faced a lot of challenges in her journey which developed her character. It contains a hint of romance as well. The author did an amazing job with the story. It’s worth a read. I highly recommend this. MUST BUY.
The Long Road Home: Carolyn M Bowen When Kate’s parents die a sudden death, her once protected and sheltered life is thrown to the wolves. Her fiancé isn’t the man she thought he was. He has wormed his way into her father’s law firm and appears to have been cheating on her via the internet. She discovers that someone is out to kill her, and her dad has another shocking secret that will change Kate’s opinion of him forever. Scared for her life she runs away to her grandmother’s plantation in Florida and turns to her father’s friend in the law firm to help her sort out her problems. However, the firm is crawling with slippery characters and practically everyone has an ulterior motive in regards to her inheritance and the business. Enter AJ, a man of mystery, who sort of stays in the background, but manages to keep Kate safe and solve most of her problems. When she hires a builder to reform the plantation, romance blossoms and AJ convinces the hunky guy to help protect the grieving Kate. To say any more would only result in spoilers, so I would just say that it makes an interesting read. Why don’t you give it a try?
🌻If you are looking for a fast paced page turner then this is it! When I started this book, I knew it would be filled with a lot of twists and turns but to my surprise it turned out more amazing. Kate's life isn't simple and after losing a part of herself in her parents, she thinks that's all, but her life is filled with many more suprises and you will be hooked till the end as a reader! . The best thing about the book is it's very easy to read and I loved how things were coming together towards the end of story and it actually is a book that could be read by all types of readers, especially if you love something that is fast paced yet not too bulky, go for it. Dear Kate, at a lot of places you have my heart, I'm in love with the storytelling and I will highly recommend it. . Rating: 4.25⭐️
Kate McClelan is the heir of a very wealthy lawyer after both their parents die in a car accident. Her life gets completely off track when she leaves her fiancee and it's visited by a private detective who is averting her that she's in danger. This is where her journey into family secrets starts. This is a book that is completely readable in one sitting. The story had me trapped from the beginning to the end and it is very well developed, with only the necessary details about the happenings for the reader to follow the story. The story itself ha many twists and turns and is quite original. The characters are very well developed, their description is lively and it's easy to pit oneself in their shoes. It has been a very enjoyable read.
** I thank NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. **
Although the synopsis sounded promising, I couldn’t push past page 58 and so The Long Road Home ended up on my digital DNF pile. It’s a shame because the story has enough potential to become an entertaining novel. Unfortunately, the writing absolutely gets in the way.
In essence, the story reads like a report, not a novel. Facts about characters, settings, and events are relentlessly strung together and I had a hard time keeping up with all the schemes and subplots and motivations. Erratic jumps between POVs and locations only added to my frustration. Way to confuse (and lose) your reader.
Disjointed and too rambling with lots of abrupt changes!
I gave this book a low rating because, while the storyline was good and the characters interesting, the plot jumped around too much to be really enjoyable. Little bits and pieces that had no prior basis kept jumping out of the woodwork and so much of the story zoomed by so fast that I was left wondering how many details I had missed. Even the end of the book, while anticipated, simply appeared on the last page like Boom, there you go! No winding up sequence at all. I' m afraid I am not the best at writing a review. I expected more enjoyment from this book.
There were times where things were 'concluded/wrapped' up too quickly and usually not in the best manner; this book moved at too much of a clipped pace - a lengthier novel would have been able to make more room for plot planning, character development and background story to the characters. One thing I will say is that Ken Stanlan wasn't a nice character; though that piece of the story was a bit of a loose end as well. I got a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book had so many great aspects to the story—Kate's relationship with Jake and her brother, her father's past, to name just a few—unfortunately, they were never fully explored and developed. It seemed like there could have been so much more to this story. I did like the author's style of writing and would definitely read another book by her in the future. (I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.)
