Professor Harold R. Isaacs was an American journalist, South-East Asia scholar, author, and professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His son, Professor Arnold R. Isaacs, is also a South-East Asia scholar & has followed in his father's footsteps in many respects.
For what the book set out to accomplish it was fairly successful at establishing the images Americans have formed of China and India and tracing the roots of image formation. However, this book really could have been 40% shorter without losing much. Isaacs is an enjoyable enough narrator though, so, going through this journey with him was a fine experience.
