Antony Wells lives in England with his wife Jacky and his daughter Hannah. He is arrested on suspicion of obtaining indecent images of children. His house is searched and incriminating evidence is found on his computer.

Teresa, Antony’s mother, wants to believe her son is innocent. This incident has brought back the unpleasant memories of raising him. Teresa feels guilt and remorse over the role she played in his upbringing. She cannot help for feeling responsible for the adult he is today.

When Antony is arrested Kate Lawton is shaken. She grew up with both Antony and his wife, but cut all connections long ago. Kate has never spoken to anyone about her past experiences with Antony as a teenager. As the investigation moves forward Kate becomes unhinged, finding it difficult to suppress her painful memories.

This psychological thriller is written in alternating voices. I liked that one character is speaking about the past while the other is in the present. The author has an engaging writing style and kept me guessing right up to the finale.

Thanks to Suzanne Leopold of “Suzy’s Book Reviews” for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this novel.
Louise Mullins is not a new author. In fact she is quite renowned and has had many books published. I am disappointed in myself for never exploring her before! It is a mistake I won’t make again.
In “What I Never Told You” several interconnected stories are told at once. There’s Kate, who suffered such traumatic abuse in her childhood that she has kept it from everyone, including her husband. Until one day when the news breaks that her abuser is in court for molesting more girls (now women). Can Kate find the strength to tell her story? Or keep living a lie that will continue to keep her husband and children in the dark? We meet Teresa, the accused’s mother, who denies that her son (albeit a little eccentric and emotionally crippled) could possibly have done the heinous crimes he is accused of. However, as she thinks back on his childhood she is faced with questions and nagging doubt. Is it possible? And of course, in classic English crime thriller fashion, we are introduced to the main detectives investigating the case, as they fight to find the real story, and prosecute the right man.
I find British crime novels confusing in parts, because of the usual overabundance of police investigators mentioned, and the different titles (“DI” instead of “detective” or “officer” that I am used to). However I won’t blame Mullins for that (after all, I’m from a country where we have mounted police. So who’s judging? By the way- Mounties rock.) This one was no different- I found it a little difficult to keep track of all of the investigating officers, but beyond that- this novel gripped me from page one. The characters are all so damaged it is hard to find innocence in any of them, and when the ending finally reveals the true culprit- it is completely unexpected.
The story is gripping, completely suspenseful and utterly addictive. Even from the viewpoint of multiple characters, Mullins knows just how to draw a reader in. Each chapter ends in a cliff-hanger, and although speculation abounds as the reader progresses, there is absolutely no telling how the novel will end. When it does end, there is surprise and then, satisfaction. Her characters are realistic (Kate is extremely damaged but also brave, with her own secrets and reasons for keeping them) and sometimes extremely strange (Antony definitely has some challenging behaviours and mental deficiencies lingering!) but they are genuine and they certainly evoke compassion and empathy in a reader.
This novel’s subject matter is challenging, and certainly won’t be for everyone but I can say without a doubt I loved the way this novel played out. Kudos to Mullins- I am going to have to hit up the library and delve deeper into her library of novels!

I read this book years ago and decided to give it another run. Absolutely brilliant. It’s just got the whole package. Great plot, characters to get your teeth into and so well paced so you don’t have a moment of boredom.

This is the second of Louise’s books I’ve read and that got five stars too and I’m definitely keen to read more.

If you like dysfunctional characters and twisted family drama you’ll love this book.

The women in this book have challenges to face and sometimes life serves you a curveball and life is never the same again. YOU are never the same again. That’s what you get in this novel. I just really enjoyed this brilliant book, especially if you need some true reading escapism.

Thanks so much for taking a little time to read my review. Your likes and comments mean a lot to me. 😻 Feel free to add me as a friend or follow me for more book reviews.

What I Never Told You is a dark, psychological thriller by Louise Mullins. This novel was engrossing and all consuming; once I picked this one up, I could not put it down. I enjoyed this one in one sitting.

The plot opens with a man, Antony Wells, being arrested for images depicting minors in sexual situations. He is taken into custody, continuously asserting his innocence. From this moment, the novel is told in alternating first person perspectives. Kate, a victim of abuse, is battered and broken, sinking deeper and deeper into disarray as the lies she has so carefully hidden begin to unravel. Theresa, the mother of the accused, struggles with her involvement in her son’s charges and questions whether or not she enabled her son. The last perspective comes from the lead detective, DI Silver, as the case is rolled out and he, along with his partner DI Locke, work to make any evidence stick and bring his victims to justice.

This novel moves extremely quickly, I could barely catch my breath as Mullins took me on a wild ride. And that end twist? Whew! I didn’t see that one coming a mile away.

Fans of Fiona Barton’s, The Widow, will love this novel. I gave this one a 4/5 stars on Goodreads. This novel is out TODAY! Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy: you will not regret it!

A psychological thriller that had me hooked from start to finish. The story is written in the first person with various viewpoints.

I personally found the voice of Teresa made for compelling reading. Her son, Antony is accused of a heinous crime and so she begins to rake over incidents from the past that she knows as a mother, were not normal for a child of his age. Her doubts about his innocence begin to surface as memories swamp her.

Kate was a victim from years ago but has never told her husband or family of her trauma. As the case begins to hit the headlines, her state of mind becomes more and more fragile with her world threatening to come crashing down around her.

Readers of psychological thrillers will thoroughly enjoy this book, especially the complexities of the various characters and the ending is a twist that will catch you out for sure. A compelling read!

This is the second book I have read by this author, and I'll tell you I enjoyed this one just as much as her last novel Beautiful Liar. Superbly written the story tells how the events of what happened after Anthony Wells, a very strange and troubled man indeed; as we find out by his own mother as the story unfolds is accused of rape. There are many characters telling their own side of the story leading up to the arrest as well as the aftermath too, which really does lead onto a great plotting, and, as it states on the cover, there is a cracking twist at the end.
All in all, this book is a very god read. Starts of well, and by the time you get to the second half it really picks up a gear, and towards the end it is unputdownable. So great writing, great characters and a great plot means a well deserved five stars from me.

This is a dark and engrossing psychological thriller with an incredible plot twist! Anthony Wells is arrested for rape and child abuse; among other things, his arrest triggers media upheaval, a series of unforeseen events and most of all the return of the horrific memories Kate had buried deep down inside. While we witness Anthony’s mother Teresa struggle with her feelings of guilt and responsibility there is also Anthony’s wife and daughter to consider. Think about the impact it must have when your son, husband or father turns out to be a man the whole world regards as the ultimate scumbag. Are you still with me? Let me tell you a story.

Storyline

Anthony Wells is arrested on charges of rape and child abuse. His face is all over the media together with the stories about the horrible acts he allegedly committed. It is his arrest that triggers Kate’s memories to surface once again, the memories she had kept hidden inside for over twenty years. This proves to be extremely difficult, as Kate has fought for most of her life to keep her demons at bay, to not allow her experiences to influence her behaviour either towards her husband Steven or their two grown up children. Needless to say, Steven and their children are completely ignorant of Kate’s traumas from the past. She feels “the weight Anthony’s shadow has cast over me is suffocating.” Kate is struggling and can barely cope when all the memories resurface and she wonders whether perhaps now is the time to open up and confront her past, come forward with her story before “they twist my words and make out that I’m not entirely innocent.”

Then there is Teresa who wishes she hadn’t picked up the phone – but she did and the terrible news is engraved in her mind. She cannot erase the shocking message nor undo or repair the mistakes she made in the past. From now on she is no longer Teresa but “the mother of that man.” Teresa feels as if her heart “has been ripped” from her chest as the memories and images of the past return. Her suspicions have been confirmed. Teresa is reliving the memories from the day Anthony was born and his youth: how she felt herself a failure as his mother. There is Anthony’s wife Jacky who everyone is convinced must have known about her husband’s criminal activities. Why didn’t she act, if only to protect her daughter? Slowly and painfully, a past is revealed seen through the eyes of Teresa, Jacky and Kate but still, we are kept in the dark as to what really happened. Then, there is the impact of all this on the present..

My Thoughts

This is a well written and engrossing psychological suspense novel with an incredible plot twist. It was captivating and chilling to read. I had a bit of difficulty getting into the book because this first person narrative is being alternatively told from various protagonists’ perspectives. The more confusing, as the police case is seen through the eyes of the leading investigator Detective Inspector Silver – from his first person’s perspective. For me, the focus of the book centres around two main characters: Teresa and Kate. Through Kate’s actions, thoughts feelings and eyes, we perceive the influence of rape and abuse on a person’s life. Anthony Wells’ mother Teresa gives us insight into his upbringing and behaviour growing up.

In uncovering Teresa’s feelings the dilemma lies before us: nurture or nature? Is it Anthony’s upbringing or the fall on the head when he was just a baby or was it always in his nature? As unexpected as the plot twist was – it left me feeling bewildered and confused. I cannot say any more for fear of giving the plot away but I have been thinking it over and am still not happy with some of the protagonists’ conclusions whichever way I turn it, especially when it concerns the question of culpability and responsibility. The fact that a book gives you food for thought, considering guilt and innocence and people’s perceptions of events, is in my eyes a compliment to the author who had the courage to express people’s (sometimes questionable) points of view regarding the highly sensitive topics of abuse and rape.

Anthony Wells is arrested on suspicion of obtaining indecent images of minors.

His mother, Teresa, is forced to look back on her life from the day her son was born. She feels shame and guilt. Did she raise a monster or was he born this way? Ah yes, the nature versus nurture dilemma. There's definitely food for thought here.

Kate was abused as a teenager and has kept this secret for decades, even from her own husband. Anthony's arrest opens up old wounds and may make her whole life come crashing down around her.

The story is told through alternating chapters. There's Kate who's struggling to keep up the facade, which makes for a sad tale. There's Teresa looking back on the past, on Anthony's difficult childhood. And finally the detectives working on the case.

While What I Never Told You is a psychological thriller, it's also incredibly heartbreaking at times. All the characters are complex and damaged. You can't help but wonder if things had turned out this way if they'd gotten the help they so desperately needed.

This is one gripping and pacy read with a twist I didn't see coming at all. Very unexpected and I still have a hard time figuring out a certain character's actions. Some of it doesn't sit right with me but I will let you make your own conclusions. I do love a book that makes me think.

An early morning raid on a property is what opens this story. The target is a paedophile and they need to gather as much information as possible.

To all intents and purposes, Teresa is a single mother. Deserted by her husband whilst their son was very young, he had no input in the child;s upbringing.

Anthony has no idea about right and wrong and his Mother hasn't been able to have an impact on his behaviour. What drives him is a mystery. She eventually feels that he is completely out of control.

A demanding and difficult baby Teresa struggled with him not knowing how or where to get help. He was a very late developer both mentally and physically. Because of his inadequacy in social situations neither mother nor son had friends.

We meet Kate, a middle-aged mother who has carried the burden of what happened to her all these years. She grew up knowing Antony and his wife Jacky, She has put off telling her husband about her past and feels that now is not the time either. Like a lot of abuse survivors, she carries the weight of guilt.

The news reports Anthony's arrest and to begin with, there is speculation about his actions.

As Kate begins to suffer from panic attacks, she finds herself unable to concentrate and she takes sick leave which is totally out of character.

This is a very emotive subject and the author has obviously done her research. It is well-written nd the characters believable.

A woman has a secret from years before that she has kept close to her heart. A man is arrested and those close to him try to protect his innocence. This is an uneasy plot that keeps you on your toes. Kate tells her story and tells as it was and how it has affected her life and every move and decision she has ever made. Antony’s mother Teresa, tells her story of his life and how he was “different” when he was small but no-one else saw it but her. D.I Silver is investigating the case and tells it from that side of the story. For anyone who has been abused or influenced, so much of this will ring true I am sure. How even the little things can bring back memories and what to do or what not to do or say. Told by the 3 women (and a couple of others later along the way) in the first person, this is a well told if not slightly harrowing tale although there are no descriptions of what happened, just the aftermath which is so well told only a little imagination is required, but nothing to upset too much. An excellent, unusual book.

This story is told by several of the main characters. Teresa is the mother of Antony Wells, a man in custody accused of rape and viewing child pornography. She’s convinced of his innocence. Kate is a woman plagued by memories of what he did in her childhood and which haunt her still. The detectives trying to make a case against him can’t get her to open up. She hasn’t even told her husband. The police find their case crumbling away, in spite of the murder of his accuser.

It’s a complex story with many points of view and the truth isn’t obvious. I found Antony Wells an intriguing character with a difficult upbringing and a strange lack of emotion. I felt we never got to grips with him and his motivation, although the mother’s internal dialogue was fascinating. How far are we responsible for our children’s future character? Would we really know if he turned out to be a bad ‘un? Unfortunately, the book needs proofreading as its errors were a big distraction. I know, however, that not everyone is put off by this. Just be aware of it if you are.

Edit. The author has informed me that the book sent out by Amazon on release day was an old version. If so, some of the above may not apply but I was only able to review the book I bought.

What I Never Told You is a compelling psychological thriller that I was sure I knew the outcome and yet again I was wrong and totally surprised at the twisty ending. The characters were well developed, with each alternating chapters of Kate and Teresa and even the detectives adding to the mystery and the building up of suspense. Kate is haunted and obsessed with keeping secret her teenage years and what happened to her with Antony. Kate tries to tell her husband Steve the truth but she becomes increasingly unstrung when she learns Antony has been arrested and there will be a trial. Teresa is Antony's mother who is desperate to prove her son did not do what he has been accused of, having indecent pictures of children on his computer. There is more evidence that points to Antony's behaviors involving molestation of other children who are now women. This is a gripping novel that holds the reader captive, as each chapter ends with wanting to know just what the title of this book holds as the suspicions mount. Thanks to Suzanne Leopold of Suzy's Book Reviews who sent me an ARC of this book which I really enjoyed. This is a new author for me, but I would like to read more of her work.

What would you do if your son was accused of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable? Teresa finds herself in that situation when her son is arrested for possession of child pornography and historical charges of child abuse and rape. The evidence is damning, a musician in a position of power with multiple witnesses coming forward, but Teresa still finds it hard to believe. Kate has a secret that she is hiding from her family and it is eating her from the inside out. She has never got over the abuse she suffered as a child and when she sees on television the man she holds responsible has now been charged, her emotions begin to bubble over. Bit by bit, Kate’s past is painfully exposed as she tried to put her demons to bed for good.

What I Never Told You is a dark psychological thriller and is the second book of Louise’s I have read this year, the first being Beautiful Liar. Within minutes of picking up Beautiful Liar I knew Louise was a woman who knew what she was talking about, and What I Never Told you is just further attestation to that. Louise draws on her own professional experience in psychology and forensic psychology and it clearly shows in her work.

The story is narrated in first person with the chapters alternating between different perspectives, mainly Teresa, Kate and DI Silver who is in charge of the investigation. Kate’s chapters focus mainly on the after effects of the abuse, her feelings as she tries to carry on with a normal life despite her obvious trauma, whilst Teresa rakes over memories of Anthony’s childhood. Is there some sign she should have picked up on, or a situation that she should have handled differently? As Teresa’s feelings flip between denial and self blame the reader is given bites of the nature or nurture debate to chew on. Do you make a monster or are they simply born that way?

The full picture is unravelled slowly, but just as with a spider web and a fly, the reader gets pulled in and cannot escape the inevitable, cranking the suspense and tension up to the max. Although the major themes in the story surround abuse, the author has handled the topic in a sensitive manner with no explicative details purely for the shock factor. The plot is well crafted, and charged with emotion as you manage to feel empathy for both Kate and Teresa. The characterisation is fantastic, the wife of the accused, Jacky, turned my stomach in more ways than one. There is a “twist” at the end, one I genuinely didn’t see coming but gave me a greater understanding of Kate, and why she was so reluctant to come forward, even after other accusations had been made.

This is a sad and sinister tale that shows the repercussions of crime and the ripple like effect that touches so many other lives. Overall rating four stars for this chillingly compelling read.

Read 19/01/2017 - 22/01/2017 Rating 4.8 stars

This is the 2nd book by Louise Mullins that I have read, the 1st being Beautiful Liar which I found a bit slow going. This book, however, is faster paced although it still contains a lot of descriptive text in the first half.

The story begins with a man being charged with the heinous crime of paedophilia. The main storyteller is Teresa who is the mother of the accused, Antony, and other viewpoints come from people who were affected by his actions.

Louise makes an excellent job of examining several issues in this book many of which are mental health issues and expertly discusses the effect of childhood abuse on the lives of the abused that has repercussions for decades.

Throughout the book the characters are built gradually and gain depth as the book progresses. All characters are very realistic and I feel she created a very complex, unique and realistic character with Anthony who, although he doesn’t tell his story, is still the main character in this book.

The ending is a complete shocker but unfortunately it didn’t really work for me. There were also a few scenes that I felt brought nothing to the story hence 4.8 instead of 5 stars.

On the whole this is a unique and gripping book which will appeal to readers of several genres including Contemporary Fiction and Thrillers. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

I received an Advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.

It is quite difficult to write an informative review for a book which involves a twist, I am always wary of saying too much and spoiling things for the next reader, so instead I shall give you a list of positives about this wonderful story, and the first is that there are no negatives.
I was drawn in from the very beginning and the sense of unease I felt as the plot unfolded was a tribute to skilful storytelling, not to mention the genuine concern I felt for Kate as her predicament unfolded. The authors account of the trauma that a victim experiences following a crime was portrayed so clearly that her anxiety and desperation became palpable.
One thing that I was most impressed with was that whilst dealing with a sensitive issue, the author handles the subject well, avoiding unnecessary shock tactics and instead, giving an educated and informed version of events whilst still evoking a multitude of emotions.
Now, I don't say this very often, however, when the twist arrived I really did not see it coming and the delivery of it was a triumph, a reveal which sneaked up on me and left me shocked yet importantly, understanding of Kate's story.
I think I should leave it there as I may be tempted to say to much so I hope that this review has done its work and made you curious.
Well done to the author and I look forward to reading more in the future.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.

Compelling thriller.

This turned out to be one of those surprise little gems that grabs the imagination and gets the blood pumping.

The subject matter was dealt within a sensitive and emotive way and the authors skill in making the story so realistic is apparent from beginning to end.

A highly charged emotional story and a must read x

This is the second book I have read by Louise Mullins in 2017., the first being Beautiful Liar, a brilliant psychological thriller. I was therefore looking forward to,reading more from Louise.
This second is What I Never Told You, a tension filled read. From the very beginning It is revealed Kate has a secret. So, from the first page, the intrigue has begun. A psychological suspense which involves disturbing historical abuse being investigated . I appreciated the chapters for the characters concerned in the novel, and it worked really well, giving an insight into some of the characters and their lives.
While the investigation is underway a murder is committed.
I was so sure I had guessed the outcome, but I was wrong, which in my opinion makes for a great read!
The suspense and intrigue continued throughout and the emotional aspect was portrayed well.
I look forward to reading more from Louise Mullins.
This is my honest review of an ARC from the author.

This is the first book written by Louise Mullins I have read, and it won’t be the last! I love her writing style; being very easy to read, with believable dialogue and a great pace. All the while, I was reading, I had my ideas on the twist, but it was still a shock how it all fell into place. I loved the way we switched characters to tell the story. A very clever story, told in a very accessible way!
I particularly liked the way we heard Teresa’s side of the story, as the mother of the ‘monster’ showing us the viewpoint of nature vs nurture. It’s a sensitive subject, but go read it!

Slow moving story, I didn't think there was a shocking twist. The "twist" was not a surprise and there was no explanation for why the victims didn't disclose the truth. I did enjoy the psychology of nurture v nature thread throughout the book.

This book was decent until the very end which made absolutely no sense to me. I can’t tell you why because it would spoil the whole story but it was definitely a letdown. The author lets you believe something all throughout the book and then it ends up completely being something else. And not in a good way. In a way that made me wonder if the author just couldn’t think of another way to surprise her reader. Basically, it goes like this. A married man is taken into custody for the murder of a woman. Kate, a lady who knew this man from her past is torn between coming forward and not saying a word about her past relationship with this man. Teresa, this man’s mother talks about how weird her kid was growing up and to be honest, how much she didn’t like him. It was pretty sad. So, the reader is meant to see this man as a killer, an abuser, and a sociopath and feel bad for the women in his life. This is what the whole book is about until the very end when there is a twist and I was left thinking “but why didn’t she…” and “how does that make any sense?”. The ending of this book made me want to pull my hair out.

I found this book a bit confusing at first with the constant changing of perspective and the unreliability of the characters. I read it in a day so it was definitely fast paced and kept you thinking. I had my suspicions that all was not what it seemed but the ending was still a little unexpected. Not everything is resolved by the end which may leave you feeling a bit dissatisfied.

This book does deal with sexual abuse so may not be fore everyone.
