A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

Riri Williams is a teenage super genius.

She built her own Iron Man like armor

and now that Tony Stark is missing she's considering following in his footsteps.

Riri Williams got a positive start with this issue. She's smart and clearly cares about others. Not much of her personality was put on display so far, but she seems to be looking out for others best interests. I enjoyed the issue and hopefully the following issues maintain at least this level of quality.

Invincible Iron Man #1 seems primed to tackle some social issues that are occurring in the world. Riri is from Chicago and a drive by shooting occurs in the issue. The issue also shows a trigger happy cop who shoots first while his partner looks on stunned. I particularly feel it's a good thing to address what is happening in the world and at least in this issue that happens.

One thing I don't particularly like is Riri's comic being titled the Invincible Iron Man as there have been two Invincible Iron Man titles in the last few years. I get wanting to use an Iron Man title to attract new readers, but they could have made it less confusing than ending one Invincible Iron Man and starting another one shortly afterward at issue #1.

I hope Riri Williams can capitalize on Marvel's diversity movement and build a following for herself that is strong enough that she remains when Tony Stark is around to be Iron Man again.

Invincible Iron Man #1 by Bendis sets the stage for something big—Riri Williams enters the scene, and you can feel the spark of something special. Smart, bold, and already standing out. The future of Iron Man starts here.

This gives a quick, touching glimpse of what Riri's life was like before she decided to don an iron suit, and gives you a glimpse into her personality. She's still a surprising sweet girl considering. But she showed flashes of moments of being the teenager she is as well, without the angst that tends to riddle down the stories.

In the crap storm that is turning out to be 2017, I can see at least one good thing emerging: the number of Marvel titles featuring female leads. Some of our favorite superheroes have or are finally getting their own books, and it's beautiful. Jennifer Walters is now just the Hulk, Kate Bishop has taken up the mantle of Hawkeye, America Chavez has her own book, and now Riri Williams is taking over as Iron Man. What a time to be a comic book reader!

As someone who only knows the Iron Man story from the films, I was really excited to see this book come out. I wouldn't normally pick up an Iron Man book, but add in a smart, strong African American woman taking over Tony's job? Hella yes. Riri Williams is crazy smart, a little socially awkward, and now learning how to navigate being a superhero. This issue was mainly just set up into her background and personality, but I can't wait to see where this book goes. I need to catch up on the current issues. I do wish there was actually a woman working in a significant role on this book, but I'll take the baby steps. Highly recommended!

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 (4.0/5.0)

Full disclosure - I have not ready many (any?) super hero books so many of my “revelations” may be old-hat to veteran comic book readers.

Invincible Iron Man #1 is the first standalone series featuring Riri in the iconic Iron Man suit. Brian Michael Bendis' script is strong - providing enough exposition for the casual reader (such as myself) to understand Riri's background and motivation. The cover art is stunning - the image captures a youthful exuberance to be expected from a teenager soaring through the air as Iron Man (Iron Heart?). Overall, the art is terrific throughout. The POV shots of Riri’s face inside the suit are tremendous - so much emotion and life in the eyes alone. And the facial expressions, particularly on the young Riri, are beautifully realized. As a completely newbie, I’m a little fuzzy on how Tony Stark knows about (and reached out to) Riri but I’m fully prepared to plow forward to see how things play out.

They forced so much in this book! It’s a book that could only have been written in 2017, but I don’t really know why it was necessary? Why can’t RiRi be her own hero, and why tether her to something already established? It cheapens the Iron Man brand, and it cheapens what they are trying to accomplish through her inception.

An interesting start, but since I haven't read Civil War, not really sure what's going on with Riri and Tony Stark. I'll pick up the next issue and see what it's like before I decided whether to pull this title or not.

This comic definitely met my (very high) expectations. Like always, Bendis's writing is amazing and I loved the illustrations. Now I am going to have to somehow wait patiently for the next issue to release. *sighs longingly*

I m in love with this new Iron Man series featuring Riri Williams as the titular character. It's gritty, unexpected, fun and colorful. I can't wait to see how Riri fits into the larger scope of Marvel Universe.

Letto nell'edizione italiana di Panini Comics. Riri Wlliams rileva una delle armature di Ironman senza per questo imitarlo nè diventarne l'ombra. Ne ho scritto qualche riga anche sul mio blog.

Excellent story, great mutant adversary and a brilliant conclusion that solves Riri's immediate problem in a way that works.

Comics that are heavily in the continuity of the Marvel Universe have been doing some pretty cool things in the last few years. Slowly but surely, all the old white guys are being replaced by younger supers, many of them women and minorities. I'm all for it. It is working. They are handling it very well. I've yet to pick up a title in years that I haven't thought was quite excellently crafted.

Here's another one. Bendis introduces us to Riri, a young, black, supergenius, raised by loving parents who sough the counsel of professionals to raise her well with her unique gifts. In the wake of Tony Stark's apparent death, she is tinkering with her own armoured suit, when she is visited by someone from Stark Industries. It looks like, even in death, the original Iron Man is going to be very close to her as Riri figures out how she might take his place.

Like usual, I think the way the baton is being passed is being done very well. This isn't a surprise from Bendis. However, as well done as I think these books are, they have yet to really grab me. There's a formulaic nature to them that I just can't see past. They are very safe, despite their seemingly progressive tone. I mean, I'm glad they exist. I'm just not as into the old tights and capes stories anymore. Even in superhero stories, I need something new. This is why I rarely enjoy a superhero story outside of Squirrel Girl.

The writing is good. The art is very good, and in the style of Marvel's mainstream, and to their standards of excellence.

I think I'd compare what I'm trying to describe to genre fiction. If you like a genre, and someone writes a book that is perfectly within that genre, and excellently so, you'll probably like it. Or think of the MCU. They're great action flicks, pretty consistently. But they're unlikely to ever win a Best Picture Academy Award. They're just great at what they are. And so is this. But I'm not interested enough to keep reading.

I was pleasantly surprised with this new series! Riri Williams is a wonderful Iron Man/Ironheart. The first issue was hard to read, but most heroes have a tragic past that they are continuously dealing with. Riri is no different. However, her demons are a little more difficult to identify because they were the result of senseless violence. She can't explain their actions away, or even try to understand them. It's just something she has to deal with for the rest of her life.

I've enjoyed watching her transform into a strong, determined and powerful woman. She was all of these things before, she's just found a way to amplify them. Her Tony Stark A.I. manages to help. (I'm still really curious how that is going to play out...)

I've read the first three and then the newer ones, but I really want to find the comics I'm missing so I can read through the entire series. I'm not lost since I picked her story back up after the Legacy issue, but I still want to see what happened before that.

I'm sad that Brian Michael Bendis is leaving Marvel, and I hope that his replacements are able to meet the high expectations he has set for all of his comics.
