Nadine has a great talent for writing that gets better with every book. In this story we meet up with some old friends from the previous books and a few new characters are introduced. The staff at St Angelus hospital from the matron down to the cleaners and porters lads are all part of an incredible community that extends to other family members and neighbours. Everyone is valued and cared for and although this sounds idealistic it's a fantastic setting for a story. In this book we are introduced to Lorcan, who at only fourteen is determined not to follow his brothers into a life of crime. We also catch up with the nurses, or angels, who have their own troubles to contend with, and we get to know the Delaney family, who are struggling to survive on Nolene's and Brian's wages.
Please Nadine can we have another book soon? I am desperate to find out what happens to Dana, as well as Pammy, Victoria and Beth of course. Fully deserves 5 stars.

I am honoured to kick off the blog tour for THE MOTHERS OF LOVELY LANE by Nadine Dorries. This is the third book in The Lovely Lane book series but can easily be read as a standalone, although after reading this beautiful story I anticipate that you will want to read everything written by the talented Nadine Dorries.

In this story St. Angelus Hospital is at the heart of the community and with the war over, things are beginning to change - some changes which are good and some that are not so good. But one thing that will never falter in this area of Liverpool in the 1950s is the strength, determination, and kindness that shines among this close-knit group of neighbours.
From Dessie who is doing his part in helping all of the families that have suffered or lost someone to the battlefield, to Biddy and Elsie who may disagree on occasion but have the well-being of everyone at the forefront of their actions, the real meaning of friendship and community spirit comes alive among the pages. Having survived the war does not mean that the suffering is over, and when Noleen finds herself in untested waters, she will need those that love her family, more than ever.

With plenty of fascinating characters, drama, love, and heartbreak, THE MOTHERS OF LOVELY LANE by Nadine Dorries really has everything you could look for in a historical novel. I was transported back in time and while there were plenty of scenes that brought the harsh realities that existed back then to life, there were so many beautiful moments in this book, that I know it will be a story that I will revisit again and again.

THE MOTHERS OF LOVELY LANE by Nadine Dorries is a perfect read about love, friendship, compassion, and family, and I urge you all to read this book now!

The Mothers of Lovely Lane is a third book in The Lovely Lane series, but it was new to me. I haven't read the two previous books and, as usually, when starting reading series not in the right order I was somehow anxious but now I can absolutely positively state that this book can be read as a stand - alone. Sure, there are some flashbacks and glimpses into the past but it didn't make the story in any way confusing.

What made it confusing however, and I must add it right at the beginning, was the incredibly huge number of the characters and the way the story was told itself. I must admit that I almost gave up on identifying who is who, to whom they belong and what is their story as there were so many of them. And also, with it being a rather long book, the fact that sometimes we needed two or three chapters to come to an event that was mentioned as happening right now, it just made me feel the whole story was dragging on and honestly, there were moments that I was losing my patience and interest and I wanted to bang on the table and shout hurry up, please, let's something happen, I want that ward to be opened eventually! But that's just me. And actually I don't have more things to whine about, so let's start gushing now, right?

The story is set in a gritty area of Liverpool and mostly revolves around St. Angelus hospital, a place where people come for help when they are sick and injured, and it also links all the characters in this story: our main characters but also the doctors, other nurses and the St. Angelus mafia. Among the many characters we have Dessie, helping other families who have suffered in the war or who have lost beloved ones. There are Biddy and Elsie, those so much needed characters, the busybodies who knows everything about everyone but whose presence lightens the situations so often, and Noleen, who works as a cleaner then to go home to take care about her husband injured in the war and their children. She was an incredible character and I think that every heart will go to her, as she did her utmost to keep the family alive. This feeling of community spirit, of friendship and of sharing this something special that only people who were victims to wars can share is overwhelming and is so easily brought to life by the author. The characters were all hard working, yet they were the people who wore their hearts on their sleeves and supported each other in this incredible, non - egoistical way.

The author has incredible way with words. She is able to effortlessly transport you into the fictional word of her characters. She vividly shows the harsh reality of post - war times but she also creates world full of hope and balances it with beautiful, poignant moments. There is a lot of friendship, drama, heartbreak, compassion and love, about family bonds and relationships, about the determination to not only survive but also to help. It shows the true sense of being a part of community. It was so heart - breaking to see that all of the characters in this book were somehow touched by the war, that they all were victims to drama and that they were not spared any tragedy. They truly experienced a lot in their lives and I admired this side of them, because they were people who really have seen and experienced a lot in their lives and had something to tell. They have depth to them, they have complex personalities and distinctive voices.

Altogether, The Mothers of Lovely Lane was moving, lovely historical fiction about changes - and, as we know, changes can be good or not, and this story gives us a wide view without judging. It was about strength and determination and written in absolutely beautiful, vivid way. Nadine Dorries may be a new author to me but I will be looking to read more of her books. In the meantime, I can only recommend this epic historical novel to you.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story and it was brilliant.
The idea was to help me sleep but the story was so good that if it hadn't been for my headphones I would have been listening to the dawn chorus.
Narration was really good and kept me listening to the end.
I will be looking for more from this author. Recommended.

Another really enjoyable read in this series - full of warm hearted characters. This era in UK history was a time of healing and recovery from the events of WW11 - the stories depicted were very believable and it was so easy to become absorbed in them. All in all a very good read.

Not bad. Took me a while to get into it. Could imagine all the happenings going on, especially after the war. Apparently there are more in this series, but, I think I'll give them a miss.

Another good read from Nadine. I sometimes wish some of the things were still the same as in the 50s, more respectful to each other and looking out for each other. We are too busy nowadays.

I have been a big fan of The Lovely Lane Series, to shows the true sense of community, friendship and family all rolled in one amazing series. Having read the first two books in the series, I was excited to find out there would be another book from the series which has been one of my favourite historical drama series.
St Angelus is a place where many people come when they are sick or injured, though with the war over, things are changing and progressing with the times ahead of the staff and not everyone is happy about it. A lot of people were lost during the war and not one person in the book has been untouched by the hurt and devastation of losing a friend, family member or someone they loved.
Where the other books have been about the war and the hospital, this book's theme is about a mother's love and the lengths they will go to, to get what they want and to help others. This is the case for Noleen who has seen her fair share of hurt and Bronia who doesn't know who to turn to, when life starts getting hard.
Each character has a depth and their story line's are so touching and unique from each other, which is why I can't really pick a favourite character as every character in the book is different and there is something I like in all of them, whether it is the woman who is trying her best to make the best of a bad situation or the man who has seen so much loss that he has lost himself along the way as well.
The Mothers of Lovely Lane is another beautifully written novel by Nadine Dorries, with its characters, storyline and sense of community it truly makes this book a wonderful read.

Polecam

As usual with the Lovely Lane books, as with all Nadine Dorries books, it is full of wonderful characters who you want to do well. I have to say my favouritie character in this whole series is Maisie and she is in so much of this book so enjoyed this so much.

Now looking forward to the 4th book at Christmas.

Highly recommended not only is it a feel good story it gives you a taste of 1950s Liverpool and the early days of the NHS, so you can learn something whilst reading a great story.

The beginning was very confusing. There were so many characters and the way the story was told I was not impressed. It just made me feel that the whole story was just dragging. I seriously wanted to stop reading. Finally everything started to fall into place. It was a nice story with a happy ending so to speak. But it took a long time to get to appreciate the book.

Trzeci tom serii "Pielęgniarki" autorstwa Nadine Dorries to kolejne trzy godziny cudownej lektury.
A tu klops.
To piękna książka o przyjaźni i solidarności międzyludzkiej.

Ever since Paddy came home injured from the war his wife Noleen has been the one in their household who's responsible for bringing in money. She doesn't earn much working as a cleaner at St Angelus Hospital in Liverpool. That's why they need their son Bryan's income as well. He works as a porter at the same hospital. Paddy is feeling useless because he misses one of his legs and sits at home moping all day. Will the warmth of family and friends be able to lift his spitrits and make him feel useful again?

Lorcan is afraid of his thieving big brothers. He wants to earn an honest living and when he is fourteen years old he can finally find himself a job. He starts working at St Angelus and hopefully he'll be able to stay away from the life of crime his brothers are involved in. Will he be able to pull it off and manage to stay away from them and is he strong enough to he handle the care of his mother, who hasn't been right ever since her husband died in the war?

The trainee nurses of Lovely Lane have become close friends. Pammy, Dana, Beth and Victoria are working hard to finish their education. Beth feels left out, because she hasn't found love yet. The other nurses are dating and that's what she wants as well. Will she be able to choose wisely when someone's finally showing an interest? Beth might feel lonely, but Pammy is the only one who's happily in love though. Both Dana and Victoria are having problems that can't easily be solved and they need their friends more than ever. Will they be all right?

The Mothers of Lovely Lane is another wonderful story about St Angelus by Nadine Dorries. I absolutely love reading about everything that's going on in the hospital. It was nice to read about the nurses, the doctors, the porters and the cleaning staff again. The Mothers of Lovely lane is all about friendship and community spirit. The main characters are wonderful people who are helping each other and are trying to be the best they can be. I liked that attitude very much and enjoyed reading about their creative solutions to any kind of problem. The close friendships in this story are absolutely heartwarming and they constantly put a smile on my face.

Nadine Dorries has a lovely writing style that's easy to read. I flew through he pages of The Mothers of Lovely Lane and didn't want to put it down. There are many main characters and all of them are equally interesting. St Angelus is an amazing place to work and those who have a job there see each other as family. It's a fantastic setting to read about. Nadine Dorries always gives the exact right amount of details and her descriptions are lively and dynamic. She skillfully creates a stunning atmosphere over and over again, which is one of the most terrific part of her stories. The Mothers of Lovely Lane is a brilliant inspiring novel filled with love, friendship and secrets. I highly recommend this entertaining comforting book, it definitely lifted my spirits.

I could make this review so easy by saying you all need to read this book! As soon as I spotted the cover it called to me. I remember with huge affection my nurse training and those uniforms evoked so many moments of nostalgia in my mind. I’m not quite as old as that era though! So when Suzanne from Head of Zeus offered me a copy I jumped at the chance. I was so lucky to get a beautiful hardcover which made it even more of a delight to read.

Set just after the war in a gritty area of Liverpool, the story revolves around the hub of activity St. Angelus hospital. The Mothers of Lovely Lane is actually the third in a series but can easily be read as a standalone. It follows the lives of some of the poorest yet hardworking members of the community.

It’s a time of change with the onset of the NHS so from that point of view it is incredibly interesting historically. It explores the deep bonds between families and how friends stick together during times of dire need.

Noleen works nights as a cleaner then goes home to her war injured husband and children. She does her utmost to keep the family afloat, the tensions mount as circumstances change and my heart bled for her at times, her devotion despite being bone-tired was palpable.

Bronia’s family falls apart as her depression deepens and her son who has been living a life of crime falls foul of the law.

Biddy and Elsie are a typical pair of nosy neighbours, they know everyone’s business but at times this can be a life-saver when facing adversity the whole community pulls together.

There are so many wonderful characters in this story. I can assure you as soon as you start reading it will be a wrench to put it down, the bleakness of the situation tugs at your heart but the sheer stubborn determination to survive will uplift you the next minute.

It is quite a long book (400+) but once absorbed in the story-line it flies by. It demonstrates the difficulties the Irish community endured at that time but also how they show strength and the ability to pull together and face the world as one.

I really enjoyed Nadine’s writing style and will be collecting her other books from now on. If you like a mix of history, family loyalty, a few villains or a pillar of the community character then this saga is for you.

Grateful thanks to Nadine and Head of Zeus for inviting me onto the tour and my copy of The Mothers of Lovely Lane which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I hadn't read anything by Nadine Dorries before so I was unsure as to how I would find the story. There was no need to worry as within a couple of chapters I was pulled right into this story and didn't want to leave the St Angelus community behind.

The Mothers of Lovely Lane is about family, love and friendship but also has some real issues for the people of that era. There are changes in their lives with new progressive techniques being developed for the St Angelus Hospital. Also there is a different way of thinking for the people of that time. There is a little bit of everything some drama, relationship worries and criminal activity that definitely made sure my interest was held.

Comforting at times as there is a real sense of community and of helping out your neighbours. Although because of this they do know every little bit of each others business! Life isn't easy but everyone tries to pull together in spite of their troubles. Nadine Dorries has created some wonderful characters who felt so real to me the more I got to know them. It is the third book in the series so there are characters from the previous books. However I will say that even though I haven't read the other books there wasn't really any confusion. Mainly because there is a little bit of information given relating to each one. This is done in a way that doesn't interrupt the flow of the story. Anything to do with history is normally a hit with me and The Mothers of Lovely Lane is a beautiful story that took me right back into the past.

A delightful story with a wonderful set of characters!

With thanks to Suzanne Sangster & Head of Zeus for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Po raz kolejny Nadine Dorries wzrusza nas i bawi dzięki życiowym rozterkom aniołów z Lovely Lane i wszystkich osób powiązanych z życiem i działalnością szpitala.

The third book in the 'Lovely Lane' trilogy by Nadine Dorries. This time the book centres around the mothers living in Lovely Lane and their lives and that of their families. Each family has their own troubles and we see how they manage to cope with everything. Of course the book still also focuses on the student nurses : Beth, Pammy, Dana and Victoria, they all have their own dramas going on also.

Nadine Dorries has a great way of developing the characters in her books and she does this with no exception in this book.
I love the characters of Biddy and Elsie and the banter that goes on between them. This is a wonderful saga set in the early 50's in Liverpool. This book could be read as a stand alone but if you do read this one first I
guarantee you'll want to read the other books in the series.

Historical fiction based in Liverpool docks during the 1950s. The nurses of St Angelus are in their 2nd year and finding their feet in the hospital and with the men folk. This book is mostly about the people living around Arthur Street, in poor circumstances. Some families lost the man of the house during the war and are struggling to make ends meet. One lad, Lorcan (14) must take on caring for his mum who never recovered mentally from the loss of her husband. Her older boys are involved with theft and she refuses to acknowledge that they are bad eggs.... even when one almost kills her. And live for the nurses is all over the place, with an out-of-marriage pregnancy, a womanising doctor, and a huge betrayal that may see one nurse give up her nursing dream and head home to Ireland. Very enjoyable read.

Another brilliant story

As with the previous stories I couldn't wait for it to be published and will be waiting for the Christmas story. So well written and enjoyable. The research certainly shows and makes you realise how hard nursing is. Interesting about how things were done in the 50s and how much has changed. Even the way working women were treated and paid less than the men. Really enjoy all the characters and how much they've changed since the first story. A lesson in history of Liverpool and how hard life was after the war, a lot of poverty but people just worked hard and got on with it. Some very happy and sad events for the characters, poor Dana who couldn't accept betrayal and lovely Emily whose life changed so quickly. Interesting to see what happens next.

Noleen Delaney is a cleaner at St. Angelus trying to keep body and soul together after her husband is crippled by his war injuries but his bitterness is destroying family life.
While Bronia Ryan, Lorcan's mam is battling depression since her husband died.
With one son, JT in prison it's upto Lorcan to be man of the house while desperately trying to stay on the straight and narrow and shake off the criminal past of the Ryan name.
Alongside these we have the usual cast of St. Angelus trying to help out Noleen and Lorcan as all the inhabitants pull together as trouble stirs in the community when the shady Bevans are around.
Another lovely slice of life in the Lovely lane series.

In 1959 I started as a cadet nurse in a Yorkshire hospital. Naddine, you took me back in time to the children's ward I was on. Visiting children only on Sundays was the norm back then. Trying to comfort children too young to understand why mummy and daddy will not come for another week was heart breaking. Having to take all the sweets and chocolates to Sister's office so they would not make themselves sick. Tiny children strapped to wooden frames because they had hip dysplasia. Life was very hard for sick children back then and I am still haunted by some of them. The accuracy and feeling that you put into your books has kept me hooked throughout. Following the lives and loves of the nurses, doctors and hospital staff that you have brought to life so brilliantly means I will be a fan of yours for life. Thank you the happy memories and some of the sad ones too!

Another lovely romp of a read catching up the brilliant characters created by Nadine Dorries who live by the Liverpool Docks. As usual the hardships of the post war Irish are the mainstay of the story and the nurses who are training at the local hospital don't disappoint with their ongoing romances. Let's just say living was not easy but the local people stuck by each other in those days. Very enjoyable.

Again, much nursing is in this story, which is why I chose it. Romance and happily ever after...but the real life of people who live in Liverpool down by the docks. It’s a book of desperation but also of hope. There’s a certain reality here. I saw it in the authors previous book I read. I’m enjoying her series and plan to begin the next one soon!
