An early reader on the benefits of fire and fire safety explains how fire is used for such good purposes as cooking and lighting up birthday cake but cautions youngsters about the dangers of fire out of control. Original.
Jean Marzollo was an American children's author and illustrator best known for the I Spy series, a best-selling and award-winning collection written entirely in rhythm and rhyme and illustrated by Walter Wick. Over her career, she wrote more than 100 books for children, parents, and educators, including Help Me Learn Numbers 0-20, The Little Plant Doctor, and Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King. Born and raised in Connecticut, she graduated from the University of Connecticut and earned a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She taught high school English and later worked in educational publishing, serving for 20 years as editor of Scholastic’s Let’s Find Out Magazine. Later in life, she began illustrating her own books.
The ending of this was so weird and awkward. Second to last page: If you have anymore questions about fire ask an adult. Last page: Know how to call the fire department where you live. Then the book abruptly ends.
This book talks about fire, and introduces it to children by sharing its many uses. It is very informational, and states that fire can be good for things like heating soup, warming rooms, and producing fireworks. Additionally, it talks about how fire can also be harmful, and gives steps for children to take should they detect a fire emergency. It is very practical and easy to read, and the illustrations are lovely. I would recommend it to an early reader!
This book is purely a teaching tool about fire and the art is done really well. I really like the Paper Craft aesthetic. Believe it or not I forgot about these art styled books it it took a long time to find one with this style and I can't wait to release a book in this style. I really like the art trick on page 4. Chicken wire as a grate for the fireplace. Also the translucent, colored, plastic/paper whatever it is really adds depth in certain places. The one odd thing is that the last page is awkwardly put in there. It's the most important, must be in there, page. It looks like they tried to fit it in some where but it fell through. If they could have squeezed one last page into the book it would have been perfect as a second last page. The back side of the last page would have worked perfectly as a the end page. I understand page restraints and what happens with lack of room. It's no issue at all and I get the struggle.
This easy reader title shows pros (Fire heats your soup) and cons (fire can be harmful) of fire. Also includes basic instructions about what to do in case of fire in home (meeting place, stop drop roll).
This is not only a great easy reader, but also a good book to introduce the topic of fire safety with kids. It is simple enough to be clear even to very young children. And the illustrations are fun!
