"Highly recommended as one of the very few books on the subject worthy of being used an an authoritative guide." — Design "Illustrators, sculptors, and taxidermists who draw or model animals will welcome this new revised edition." — Natural History Here are 288 remarkably lifelike drawings of animals, furnishing artists and students with an easy-to-follow method of instruction in the drawing of horses, dogs, lions, cows and bulls, stags, and goats. So detailed and so accurate are these drawings that this book has long been a classic work of its kind. The animals are shown in three external full views and dozens of details (paws, head, eyes, legs, etc.); beneath-the-skin drawings of musculature and of the positions and insertions of each muscle; and skeleton drawings of the bone structures that support and determine surface contours and configurations. In addition, special cross-sections dissect those portions of the animal — such as the head and limbs — that are most important to the artist. For this edition, Lewis S. Born of the American Museum of Natural History collected 25 plates from George Stubbs's Anatomy of the Horse, long unavailable; Straus-Durckheim's Anatomie Descriptive et Comparative du Chat; and Cuvier and Laurrillard's Anatomie Comparée . These plates, as fully annotated as the plates that make up the original book, supplement Ellenberger, Baum and Dittrich with anatomical drawings of the monkey, the bat, the flying squirrel, the rat kangaroo, the seal, and the hare. Mr. Lewis also provided a new preface and added to the annotated bibliography, which now contains 66 items.
This book is (obviously) similar to the "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" because it gives images of the skeletal structure and even muscular structure of several different animals (including: horse, dog, lion, cow and several other animals covered briefly. Anatomy structure is very important when drawing a human figure or an animal! Anytime I am drawing a certain animal I use this book as reference, even if there is not a specific animal included, this book has a good basis to start from.
This book is an excellent anatomical reference for drawing animals, but there's a lot more on some animals than others.
There's a lot more information on horses than anything else, but there is still a wealth of information on dogs, lions, deer and cattle. There are also a few extra plates of housecats, bats, monkeys, rabbits and others seemingly thrown into the back as an afterthought.
An absolute must for anyone interested in drawing animals! Almost all other decent animal anatomy books I've seen reprint images from this volume because they are so useful and accurate, so why not get them direct from the source in this large-format, inexpensive paperback?
Pictorial break-downs of skeletons and musculature, including close-ups of eg. paws, hooves... for several animals. Horse, dog and lion have greater focus than others. User needs to have some handle on how to use this resource as it does not contain tips on its use for beginners.
This is one of the best reference books for animal anatomy that I've ever seen. There are hundreds of drawings of cows, cats, horses and more. I look to this book often.
