I cried at the scene that Masahiko’s brother talked to Masahiko. Masahiko has already died, and he has never shown the crying face to his brother. At that scene, he was crying about what his brother said in front of his brother. And he was glad to already died because he didn’t show his crying face to the end. This scene is best so far.

Kekkaishi, Vol. 4 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (27–35) of the on-going manga series with a bonus story.

Masamori Sumimura, a Shadow Organization member and Yoshimori Sumimura's older brother, arrives at the Karasumori site – much to Yoshimori's annoyance. The next night, Masamori creates a scheme where the school's grounds into a forests, which surprises Yoshimori and Tokine Yukimura. They try to destroy one of the trees, but to no avail until they grow in strength in their kekkaishi powers. After fending off Masamori's scheme, Yoshimori promises his brother that he would become stronger and seal off Karasumori's power forever.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Yellow Tanabe. The tankōbon introduces Masamori Sumimura, the eldest son of the Sumimura Family. Although he is the oldest of the three brothers, Masamori was not chosen as the heir, which had always been a source of mystery to both him and Yoshimori. He is a very skilled Kekkaishi – mastering the highest defense techniques. It is rather interesting to read the dynamic between these two siblings.

All in all, Kekkaishi, Vol. 4 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Yoshimori's brother is so creepy. I don't trust him. I love the chapters with the patisserie chef ghost.

Gore: No
Magic: Yes (they have barrier making powers, I think they call it manipulating space and dimensions, something like that, I don't remember, but I consider it to be magic)

Romance: (This one's kind of hard to say) So far, there isn't much romance, although it's obvious that Yoshimori likes Tokine, I'm still not exactly sure how she feels about him yet, although she does care about him
Action: 4 stars
Pacing: 4 stars
Plot: 4 stars
Drawings/Art: 4 stars

Warning, Spoilers

This volume has an obvious theme in it, which is brothers and sibling rivalry, although there's not much sibling rivalry with the ghost and his little brother.

Volume 4 has chapters 27-35 in it.
In the first three chapters (27-29), it's about the ghost patissier ---who's always following Yoshi around and helping him with baking--- and the reason why he can't move on, which is because he's worried about his little brother and he thinks that his brothers hates him. Although, the younger brother is mad at him for a different reason, which is for leaving him after his parents died when he was a child and being his only real family. Everything is resolved at the end and the ghost is finally able to move on from this world.

The rest of this volume is about Yoshi and his big brother Masamori, which I think is the main story of this volume. Masamori comes back home after a few years being away, he's the leader of the night troops. Yoshimori hates him because he's more talented than he himself is yet he's not the heir (which isn't something you see a lot, since the heir would be so proud and the other sibling would hate him/her for it, but instead it's the other way around). Yoshimori also hates him because everyone keeps talking about how perfect he is: that he's a really great kekkaishi, talented, handsome, etc. He really hates it when Tokine talks about him, which is most of the time, he gets jealous so easily, lol. Masamori only makes Yoshimor's confidence in himself worse, all he does is criticize him. I'm confused if Masamori is jealous of Yoshimori for being the legitimate heir, obviously he's a little jealous, but I'm not sure how much though. I'm ahead on watching the anime than the manga, and in there Masamori actually ends up helping Yoshi and we see that he does care about him, although is it just me who thinks this, is Masamori looking for more power? Sometimes he's testing Yoshi to and sometimes he's just criticizing him.
He leaves at the end, which is a pretty short visit, because he senses something weird going on with the Shadow Organization so he decides to leave the next day to find out what's going on.

Obviously Yoshi isn't too thrilled about his job since everyones always saying that he's too reckless, too lazy, too slow, that he never thinks, etc, yet they are always amazed by the strength of his powers and talk about it behind his back, they could at least congratulate him sometimes, especially his grandpa, he's always so mean to him, although Tokine sometimes does congratulate him and his little Toshimori tells him that he has talent.

Those are the major incidents of this volume, of course more happened, but I don't want to bore you with all of the details.

Overall, I like this manga more and more with each volume, mostly because the characters are becoming more familiar and so is the plot. I'm getting really curious about the area Karasumori (I know I say that sentence in every Kekkaishi review, but I'm really curious). I also realized a few weeks ago that most of Sumimuras have names that end in mori (except for the dad) and the Yukimuras have names start with Toki. I think it's tradition since the founders name is Tokimori, although I'm not sure.

Wow, this is shorter than my other Kekkaishi manga reviews, I think I'm getting better at summarizing.

I'm not sure if I should review every book I read in this series or just some, I keep thinking that maybe I should review just some volumes, I don't know yet, we'll see.
Wow, ten reviews in one month, I've never done more than six reviews in one month (plus I read a total of fourteen books this month, it'll probably end up being fifteen soon), I know that most of them are mangas, but it still amazes me how crazy I was with reading this month.

I rated this book: 4 stars.

There's an obvious sibling theme to Volume 4. We start out with Masahiko, the pastry chef ghost that we met in Volume 3. As much as Yoshimori likes him, he wants Masahiko to get past his figurative demons and move in on the spirit world. Turns out that Masahiko feels horribly guilty about his death. Masahiko was poised to take over his uncle's business. Now that burden has fallen to his little brother, on whom Masahiko doted ever since their parents died at a young age. He's sure that his brother resents him for dying. Yoshimori goes to Masahiko's brother to talk to him about Masahiko's death. Understandably skeptical, he ignores Yoshimori until he bakes a cake that brings back childhood memories. This happy memory allows both Masahiko and his brother to heal and Masahiko can move on.

The more important plot point of this volume is the introduction of Masamori, Yoshimori's older brother. Masamori is in his early twenties and seemingly perfect. He's an incredible demon fighter, handsome, confident, and well reputed. Yoshimori feels two inches tall around him. Masamori doesn't help Yoshimori's confidence. All he does is criticize him. Why aren't you faster? Why are you so reckless? Why don't you know more theory? Why are you so lazy? It goes on and on. It seems like Masamori is horribly jealous that Yoshimori is the legitimate heir instead of him.

Masamori is a mystery to me in this volume. I can't tell if he's trying to help Yoshimori or hinder him. At one point, it looks like he set up a very difficult test of demons for Yoshimori, although upon a closer reading, he may have just been observing. Still, the idea that he's hoping Yoshimori will fail is possible. I hope to get a better read on him in future volumes.

All in all, an interesting volume that starts out relatively light. Then it introduces more tension and a new plot arc that will be very important in future volumes.

This volume is probably my favorite one so far because it goes into the topic of siblings, concentrating on brothers. First, there is the ghost of the patisserie cook that has been following around Yoshimori after he found the cook and in turn, the cook has been helping him with baking. The ghost can't seem to leave because he is afraid of having dumped too much on his younger brother after his death. However, the brother is mad at him not for this reason, but for leaving him after his parents died when he was a child and being his only real family. Everything is resolved in the end and the ghost is able to leave this world. The second half was about Yoshimori and his older brother Masamori, who as the head of the shadow organization is a little questionable as to what his motives are, especially after he is seen talking to the demon tamer from Volume 2. He comes back to visit the family and Yoshimori resents him because although he is the heir to the Kekkaishi, Masamori is significantly more powerful than him and Yoshimori believes he shows off too much and shows him up. Plus he is tired of hearing about how wonderful his older brother is from Tokine, the only girl he cares about. Masamori leaves as suddenly as he arrives and I am definitely looking forward to more storyline involving him.

I think I quite like this series! It combines equal parts of Bleach, Ranma ½, and Inu Yasha, and ends up being about the polar opposite of what you’d expect those ingredients to bake into. Which is to say, it's a slow-paced, easygoing, and good-natured supernatural fight comic.

It also really works thing I liked from _Bleach_'s early arcs, where hunting malevolent spirits is dangerous and exciting, but it's also, y'know, a job. And it has top priority a lot of the time, but if you're going to be doing it for the long haul, you have to balance it with your other interests and obligations and sort of consciously give it a place in your life. Also, I really like the heroine. She's cool.

(Plus: gay dogs. A gay ghost dog, who has helped this family hunt demons for 400 years. TELL ME YOU DON'T LOVE THAT. SAY IT TO MY FACE.)

One of my favorite volumes so far, though I feel like I say that every time. Can't help it - this series just keeps getting better and better. This volume has a very interesting theme to it. The difference between the two pairs of brothers we see in volume 4 is really striking and definitely showcases the incredible range of Yellow Tanabe's writing. At once, Kekkaishi is a family drama, a paranormal adventure and a hilarious foodie comedy. Voluem 4 is a fast read with lots of action.

ngakak liat sketsa awal Masamori yang digambar mangakanya pake kumis. being the eldest is tough, so ganbatte Masamori!!! rada terganggu sama penggunaan kata yg menurut gw rada ga tepat. Yoshimori: Ng, nggak lagi, meski dia bilang begitu... kayaknya lebih enak kalo ditulis kurasa nggak. trus: Ah, mendingan di sini lagi... kok jd berasa nonton sinetron ababil.

Decent continuation of this series; in this volume, Tanabe introduces Yoshimori's elder brother, who promises to be an important character as the story goes on. I like how Masamori's background further develops plot elements introduced earlier.

Disappointing book. The first story is totally boring, and the reasoning behind what will eventually be the greater plot is weak. The run of the mill new character combine with the weak plot make this volume rather dull.
