I fell in love with the art of this series at Half Price Books and picked it up on the cheap just for that. I did not think the story would be worth much--I was pleasantly surprised, This was a great sword and socerery book with lots of comedy, action, and human interest. I had a lot of fun reading this and I'm glad I picked up the other three. If you liked the movie Wizards it is that art style-ish with lots of 70's flair.

I decided to revisit this series, as I got introduce to it as I was younger and quite loved it back then. I'm happy to realize it still holds up, compare to some other French comics I've tried getting into early this year and how big of a let down it was. The drawing style is also maybe a bit more up my alley than the previous ones I tried.

I remember this series actually push me to try and write my own fantasy story. I never got further than maybe a page or so, but still, it's a story that is very typical of fantasy, with a knight, his sidekick, one (or multiple) vilains, dark forces and one (or multiple) macguffin.

As the first of the series, you get to see how Perceva and Kervin met, and what pushed these two into their first adventure together. You also see the origin story of how Balkis and Ciensinfus got tangled into Percevan's life. It's fun enough, the pace is quick, but not too quick or patchy as it can be sometimes in first volume of comics series.

I does have some faults however. It's "a product of its time", as in there's of course fat jokes about Kervin a plenty and Percevan is easily swayed by pretty ladies. That being said, Kervin does pokes fun at him on that point, and somehow I feel like it does make it a little better.

It's a bit like if Astérix was set in a fantasy setting and took itself a little (just a little) more seriously. I do like how some old expressions of French are used to set the scene as well. It's more well done in that way than in Aria or Throgal, where it was just kinda annoying. Reminds me of "Les Visiteurs" (The Visitors), and that always a good thing.

The art is very good, but displays a weird combination of styles. Percevan and all the ladies have a basic manga look. Most of the other characters look like they came from Mad magazine, recalling Don Martin and Will Elder. Backgrounds are typical ligne claire. Cartoon horses are drawn with the typical effortless skill. The French are expert in all animal drawing, but especially horses.

A note on the Fantasy Flight edition — the book is quite small, smaller even than US comics. Despite that, the print quality is high and the linework is pretty sharp. Strong light and a magnifying glass may help appreciative the detail.

The story is simple and features two threads — heroes and villains. The tale begins when Baron deadstone hears of a magic stone in the possession of Percevan and sets out to steal it, and then to find the other 2 stones, a crown, and ultimately become an all-powerful tyrant. Percevan’s goal is to recover the family ring and thwart the Baron’s evil plan. The tone is largely comic as they face various obstacles.

Percevan saves a fat jester, who becomes his faithful squire, and in turn saves Percevan several times. He faces a sorceress, a castle full of guards, and a wizrd’s cat.

The scheming baron is accompanied by a sniveling sidekick whom is often abused. They’re an incompetent, bungling duo, tripped up by their own stupidity and malice as much as anything.

SPOILER

At the end of volume 1, Percevan recovers from a near-fatal poisoning, and rides off in pursuit of the Baron, who has all 3 stones and has traveled north in search of the crown.

I bought this on a whim and it's great. It looks and feels like an 80s saturday morning cartoon but with better story. I recommend all four volume that fantasy flight has released.
